Thinkpad yoga 14 Fix I discovered

Hello,
To geeksquad repair techs or customers savvy with a soldering iron, I just wanted to present the fix I figured out to the ever-so-frustrating problem on the Thinkpad yoga 14 where the laptop would power off when disconnected from AC power and then held or nudged in a certain way.
long story short, there is a small switch that detects if the back cover is on, which, for what I assume is safety reasons, shuts off the laptop if the back cover is detected removed. the problem is that lenovo picked an overly sensitive switch for this purpose, and any minor deformation of the case is enough to trigger it, regardless of how tightly the back cover is screwed on. therefore, the switch needs to be soldered to trick it into thinking the back cover is always on.
(removed per forum guidelines)

I wanted to also clarify that electrical tape is not sufficient to fix this, the switch will simply stretch through the electrical tape over time.

  • Thinkpad Yoga Hot

So, recently I've noticed something odd about my Thinkpad Yoga S1. I close the lid and put my computer away. Usually when I take it out, it has started to hibernate but today when I took out my computer, I noticed that it was quite warm and it was still running when I opened it up. I checked my power settings and everything is the same. WHat is going on?

Do any of you have Kaspersky Anti-Virus or Internet Security? Seems like few T540 owners also got the same problem and one of them discovered it is Kaspersky causing the problem. I can comform it too.
I am using Kaspersky Internet Secuirty 2015, when I resume my TPY from sleep, the message receiver for shortcut hot keys will show up and use 20-35% processing power which cause the laptop to heat up.
I hope a Thinkpad rep can come in to report the bug.

  • Multiboot Thinkpad Yoga 14

    Hi
I just bought the Thinkpad Yoga 14 and one of the first things I wanted to do is to Install another Windows 8.1 next to the already installed one. So I resized the main partition to half its size... But when I press F12 to enter the BootMenu and I select the Bootable USB with Windows 8.1 on it(the setup of Windows off course), nothing happens.
Does this have something to do with Secure Boot or similar? How can I fix it? I usually have a Dualboot System, one for serious work and one I use for free time..
    Sincerely
    NicJak

That's right , the track pad is back to buttons.  some people hated the present one.
I still cant find a £ price in the UK but its ok iv bought the 15s should ship this Thursday.
A word of warning dont belive a word of lenovo ship times , I have had 3 delays and will have waited 8 weeks for my machine iv it ever turns up?  I think they just put them up for sale before they even exist..

  • Thinkpad Yoga S2 Largest After-Market HDD

Can anyone point me to the highest capacity 2.5" HDD, 2.5" SSD, and m.2 SSD that would be compatible with the Thinkpad Yoga S2 12?
I know that I need to stick to 7mm on the 2.5" drive, and 42mm on the m.2.  I was hoping someone else had already done the research.
Also, is the Maintenance Manual downloadable yet?

if you type ThinkPad Yoga in the search box, and click on ThinkPad Yoga 12 in the result list, you will get an error, it has been going on for a while, probably a bug in Lenovo's database, it happens every once a while.  submitting ticket to their web admin usually doesn't help, i have tickets closed saying it is fixed and it wasn't, haven't bother for a while.

  • Thinkpad Yoga 12 20CD extreme fan noise

    Hi,
Last week, I had my Thinkpad Yoga 12 serviced, as it didn't boot anymore. The whole interior got replaced. Since then, the fan noise is really unbearable. It was the same when I initially bought the machine, but then, a BIOS update (don't know which anymore) fixed it. It's a loud high-pitch noise, like a whissle.
I need urgent help, my collegues are complaining of the noise.
    Best regards,

  • Thinkpad Yoga crashes almost every day

A few weeks ago my 4-year old laptop started crashing a few times every week, so I decided to get a TPY. I received a 20CD000MMH (I5, 8 Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD+16Gb M.2 SSD) with windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit) on the 20. Feb and since then the longest time it has kept running is less than 48h. I've been downloading both recommended and optional  (12. Feb BIOS update was optional!) Windows and Lenovo's System Updates every day, sometimes twice a day: after a crash System Update usually wants me to reinstall the LAN driver. I've reinstalled Intel's graphics driver several times over as well. For example yesterday screen brigthness was stuck at max after a BSOD, so at least it seems sometimes System Update is right in it's reccomendations.
Currently I have 5 files in the Windows minidump folder, about as many BSODs did not result in any. I've also done 2 resets after discovering in the morning that the computer is almost too hot to hold and won't shut down. Fortunately those have not recurred since disabling "turn off display" last week and checking every time I go to sleep that the computer really is off.
I haven't found many posts from other people who have this many crashes - I'm starting to feel I'm missing something obvious or have a really, really bad example of a TPY. At least there are no ghosting issues, although the SSD worked for caching for only a single glorious day of sub 20 sec. boots. Now I'm back to 1min+...
Does anyone have any advice, besides returning it? The only thing I think I haven't tried yet is messing with the virtual network adapter (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/Thinkpad-Yoga-not-waking-up-after-sleep/td-p/1348... as I'm afraid of permanently losing the network connection (which has been working fine) or something and I haven't foud any real instructions.

And an update about my TPY also: my local Lenovo service couldn't find any hardware or software issues and it did not crash when it was there for two and a half days. They barely used it though. They did suspect the problem might have something to do with Lenovo and Microsoft programs being incompatible (both have power managers, for example) while running simultaneously. We decided to test software issues by having them reinstall Windows (on a 128 Gb M.2 SSD, which I had bought a few days before as I was sick and tired of the barely functional SSD caching) and by me avoiding any and all updates besides antivirus definitions. So far I've had one crash in 3 days, although it was not a BSOD. It just freezed up while watching a video and I had to reset it with a pin. So things have gotten better, especially considering I now can start using the computer in less than 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes after a crash. It's still not good though and there seem to be some memory issues: when I wake up the computer or restart Windows the setting keep changing for no reason. So far the desktop background has changed color, scaling goes from 125% (which I prefer) to either 100% or 150% and the mouse pointer size changes. Also I've gotten some memory errors (displayed too briefly to write down) when making changes to the account that require me to log off. I'll keep it for a few days and look for additional problems but it looks like I'm going to have to have the motherboard replaced...

  • Genuine Lenovo Battery Not Attached, Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga

I am having a message that says "Genuine Lenovo Battery Not Attached" message that appears after Windows 8.1 starts up. A similar sort of message appears before even Windows boots up, and I need to press the 'Esc' key in order for Windows to boot. This seems to have happened after a recent Windows update. I have uninstalled an reinstalled the Lenovo Power Management Driver but it does not appear to have fixed the issue. My BIOS is the latest version.
This issue is on my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga S1.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

  • TVSU not showing latest drivers for Thinkpad Yoga or updating to the latest software

    I'm using Windows 8.1 x64 with a Thinkpad Yoga
I have TVSU (ThinkVantage Software Update) version 5.03.0010 which it updated itself to from a previous version.
However, on the support page for the Thinkpad Yoga:
    http://support.lenovo.com/au/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-yoga-series-laptops/thinkpad-...
The latest version of TVSU is shown to be 5.06.0020
The current version of TVSU I am using is not updating my Intel graphics driver to the latest shown on the the website above (The latest version on the site is 10.18.10.3855 10/17/2014 whereas TVSU only updated mine to 10.18.10.3383 an older version which isn't available on the website).
I prefer to do everything through automated updates and I have run into errors manually updating. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

This is normal.  All drivers must go through quality certification before showing up on SU. Typically a 2 month delay from the version posted on the support page.
The absolute newest version would be found on www.intel.com. The support site has the absolute newest version.

  • Inconsistency in Thinkpad Yoga availability dates

I don't think I will again order anything from lenovo .I place an order for thinkpad yoga on 1st February .when I was placing the order it says shipping within 8 business days . after when I call the lenovo online then they said they are having a problem with suppliers so its now showing any estimated shipping date . and today when I call they saying the estimated shipping date is 9th march and from that day it will take another 5 days for delivery. From the day I order I was checking the lenovo online site its still showing 13 business days for shipping . and the customer service is not helping much they said they can't do anything .if I want to cancel the order I can cancel .is it a joke company like lenovo customer service don't have an idea. Don't no really what to do .all my work is pending .

    Rimaz,
I can appreciate how frustrating this would be, especially when you need to be sure you can get a system by a certain date.   Lenovo's direct sales process (tele / web) varies a bit by region, but generally the information on availability ahead of the order is updated daily rather than real time.  It also reflects the general base configuration for products that can be customized, so if different components are selected, final availability can change.
Often the estimated shipping dates (after order is placed) can move several times and may deliver before the dates given.  I realize this is problematic in your case.
Perhaps sales can advise on any "topseller" models that may be fixed configuration and on hand that could be similar to your specfications and shipped sooner?  Also, perhaps some Lenovo resellers have models in stock and could potentially be another source if they could ship quicker?

  • Thinkpad Yoga 14 stylus' eraser won't work in Onenote 2013

Hey everyone! I purchased the Thinkpad Yoga 14 around mid-July and love it, but I can't use the pen's erase button in Onenote 2013. It wasn't working in Photoshop for a while, either. It works with every other Office program that supports pen input (word, excel, powerpoint, etc.) I did some research, and read a few comments that said Windows 10 fixes the issue with the erase button.  I upgraded to Windows 10 today, and while the erase button works in Photoshop now, it still isn't working in Onenote. I'm at a loss here. I can't figure out how to fix this for the life of me, and nothing else I come across online has been helpful. Does anyone know how to fix this??? I use Onenote to thumbnail drawing concepts and comic pages; so, I do a ton of sketching and am using the eraser every few minutes. Not having access to a quick erase button is really frustrating.

As a (hopefully) final twist to the tale, Win 10 has now installed Conexant specific drivers in place of the Microsoft HD Audio ones. Looking at the event history the new drivers "outrank" the generic ones. The Conexant drivers are signed by Microsoft, not Conexant. Crucially, the microphone remains in place after this latest update.

  • Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

Admin Note: This thread has been reorganized for escalation purpose -  using ajpot's info for escalation since he was the first to respond to my request of collecting information.
I've got the ghosting issue on my yoga as well.  It was OK for the first few weeks (no noticeable ghosting at all) but now it only takes around a minute of having something on screen for ghosting to appear when switching to something else.
I'm in the process of sending my yoga in for repair as I'm experiencing some other issues, so I've asked them to repair the screen as well.  From what I've read, it's likely they won't be able to fix it (in which case I'll be asking for a refund) but I'll see how it goes.
    Machine: ThinKPad Yoga
    Machine Type Model: 20CD-CT01WW
    Date manufactured: 3rd December 2013

As amirvf mentioned this is a common issue and there is an active discussion about it over at http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/731068-lenovo-thinkpad-yoga.html Here is a quick recap:TPY uses a 12.5" LG Philips panel that has really, REALLY bad case of image retention (ghosting)The ghosting is not permanent and is actually specific to the way LCD panels work and present on all panels, but usually it's so minor that it is not noticeable to the naked eye. In case of those LG Philips panels, however, the effect is VERY noticeable.Lenovo has a page explaining the general issue: http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/detail.page?DocID=HT051485The easiest way to check for this is via http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html (this is a test that was made for MBPro that had ghosting issues, but it works great for testing TPY too)The same panel is used in Dell XPS 12 and there is a long thread on Dell forums complaining about the issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19497269.aspxThe problem is inherent to the process/chemistry used in the panels and cannot be solved via software/driver update. (Although some support representatives will direct you to partial solutions that flash different colors and can alleviate the issue but only marginally). To fix this issue panel manufacturer (LG Philips) would have to modify it's tech process and a replacement panel would have to be installed. The bad news are that currently there is no solution (AFAIK). They can swap your panels to your heart's delight, but currently there are not panels available that do not exhibit the issue (You should note, however, that the issue is usually less pronounced on a new panel and is gradually amplified over a course of first several weeks, so if you have on-site support and if you/Lenovo are willing, you could theoretically swap your panels every two weeks or so to approximate a real solution). Also note that the market for 12.5" panels is relatively small and there is no real competition, so there is no strong incentive for LG Philips to fix anything (XPS 12 has been suffering from this for over a year now, even through a model refresh)The good news are that Dell has finally acknowledged the issue and are saying that LG Philips has fixed the panels and new batch is coming around February, plus some people have reported that their newly bought XPS 12 does not exhibit ghosting. So, assuming this is indeed so, new panels should trickle down to TPY owners too sometimes. I'd love to see an official acknowledgement/response from Mark on this...

  • Form Factor on the Thinkpad Yoga S2 15.6

Will it be the same as on the S1?  If so, can anyone give their real-world experience with using it as a tablet?
Since it will have a digitizer option, I'm inclined to go with it over the 12, although I never had any complaints about the screen real estate on my Surface Pro.
The waffling between the two is driving me nuts.

  • Fan racing intermittently, no CPU load, Thinkpad Yoga 15

I just purchased a Thinkpad Yoga 15. I was trying to fix its disabled discrete graphics card. One thing i did was update the BIOS. I think it's after this that the fan started to intermittently race. It's silence, then runs loudly and annoyingly for a second or two, slilent again, then randomly continues. Before the upgrade it was silent all the time.
This is terrible. Anyone has any ideas?

  • No Bluetooth on Thinkpad yoga 15...

I recently acquired a Thinkpad yoga 15 laptop and while playing with the options I realised it completely lacked Bluetooth functionality. I have tried updating the Intel PROSet Bluetooth software, updating the network adapter drivers, disabling the adapter altogether and reenabling it through the BIOS. I don't know if the Bluetooth adapter is supposed to appear as a different adapter in the Device Manager or if only the Intel Dual-Band AC 7265 is supposed to show up (under the Advanced tab, Bluetooth is labeled as Active). No bluetooth option is present in the PC and devices options menu... I even reset to factory settings in case it was an issue with a third party program, but even there, same situation. Am I missing something? Please help me to get this feature working!

No HDMI sound in Windows 10 on Thinkpad Yoga 12. Shows not connected in the sound panel, only video transmits over HDMI but soud plays throught speakers as it does not detect the audo link.

Update: I managed to fix it by using what brillat described here. "The HDMI Audio drivers, for whatever reason, are not installed when you install the Intel video driver. You know they are missing if in your device manager under "Sound" you see "High Definition Audio Device" - you should instead see "Intel(R) Display Audio". Download the video drivers from Lenovo.  Extract but do not install.  In the extracted folder, find the DisplayAudio folder.  Find the "High Definition Audio Device" with PCI ID Vendor 8086 and Device 2807 in Device Manager.  Manually update the driver of that device, pointing it to the DisplayAudio folder."
