Thinkstation E31 tower: 5.25-inch optical drive bracket FRU part help

This is a message for Lenovo Technical support. For a Thinkstation E31 tower 2555/22G, I need to install a tertiary disk drive (2,5 inch SSD) into the second 5.25-inch optical drive bay that is empty. In order to do this, I need some mechanical parts mentioned in the HW maintenance manual @ chapter "Installing the tertiary hard disk drive": namely "storage converter" and "5.25-inch optical drive bracket". I tried to match these names with the names provided in the FRU parts database for E31 (document thinkstation31_tower_5_29_2012.pdf), but without success. Impossible to find out what FRU part I need to order ! I find the FRU parts description too brief and highly confusing. Could someone from Lenovo please tell me what are the FRU's part no. that I have to order ? THX in advance, your help is very much appreciated.

  • Optical Drive Ribbon Clamp. Help!

While upgrading my hard drive on my own, i managed to break what I think is the "locking bar" part of the ribbon clamp for my optical drive. Where can I find a new one, how can I fix it, or are there any other solutions for my problem?
    I have an iBook g4 12-inch.
    Thanks.

You may be able to contact the home company of these guides to see
if you can get just the part by itself you need: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
Or other companies that specialize in iBook and PowerBook repairs would
be the kinds of places to check, such as this page to send an email inquiry:
http://www.wegenermedia.com - or call. They have parts for many models.
You may also find they have a good customer relations service.
    Hopefully this helps.

  • CQ60 Optical drive check. Please help.

I have a Compaq CQ60-422DX laptop. I did an optical drive check through the HP Support assistant software. My DVD-RW drive is working fine (plays, rips, and burns CDs and DVDs as it should). I even checked the device manager for good measure. But when I used the optical drive check on the HP support assistant software, the result came on as "Action Needed," in terms of the reading check but it doesn't tell me exaclty what the reason is and it just directs me to the general Windows Help application. What seems to be the problem? please help.

Buy Disk Warrior and use it to repair your OS X volume (if it's repairable.) If DW cannot repair the volume then use Disk Utility to reformat the volume using the Zero Data (one pass) Security option.
Do you have a backup of your OS X volume? Since you have tried using TDM to access the drive without success it's reasonable to assume your data may be lost. If you have an external hard drive you can use, then you could attempt to use file recovery software to see if your data are recoverable.
At this point it is premature to assume the drive is bad since your Windows volume is functional. If you have Windows software for reading Mac drives you may try accessing the OS X volume from Windows.
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Looking for Optical Drive compatability by part number

I have located a replacement 20X CD-ROM Module for my Pismo PowerBook. I want to be sure it is compatible. The model number of the drive is M2451. The person selling the drive has no clue if it is compatible. If anyone has any information about this dilema, it would be greatly appreciated.

twillaustin, welcome to Apple Discussions from a fellow Texan.
The M2451 CD-ROM (661-1516) is for a Wallstreet model G3. Don't know if it would work in a G3 Pismo.
The Pismo originally came with a DVD-ROM M7931 (P/N 661-2244). I have one of these with my Pismo. I also have a 24X CD-ROM M7388 to use with my Pismo.
If you want to be safe, get the M7388. It should be about the same $ as the M2451.

  • Suggest an external optical drive?

My iMac's (21.5 inch) optical drive is just about useless, especially when it comes to transferring files from discs onto my computer, taking as long as 30 minutes for 4gb of information. My girlfriend's iMac (24 inch) optical drive is completely broken and can not read, write, or recognize discs, and once one is put in it usually takes an act of congress to get it out.
Both of us are looking for a good, yet affordable external optical drive. I have been browsing stuff online at Best Buy but noticed all of them only list "windows" in the specification box. Are they still compatible with Mac?
Are there any "good" ones anyone can suggest that I can actually buy in person at a store such as Best Buy or Walmart? I have noticed a lot of people suggesting LaCie but I would really prefer to buy in person than over the internet.

I've never used an external optical drive, but a person I know who wore out the internal optical drive in his iMac replaced it with a LaCie. This person puts in lots of hours burning disks and he's very satisfied with the LaCie.
An Apple Store may carry them but I don't know for sure. I know some Apple Stores carry LaCie peripheral hard drives.

  • How can I install Windows 7 on a Retina MBP with no optical drive?

I'd like to install Windows 7 on a Retina MacBook Pro via Boot Camp.
However, the only distribution of Windows I'm aware of is on a physical disk.
My MBP doesn't have an optical drive. It can't read disks like that.
I'm hoping there's some kind of workaround here, because I'd hate to spend money on an external optical drive I'm only going to use once.
Does Microsoft offer a way to buy Windows 7 via a download?
If so, can I then copy the downloaded installer that onto an external USB hard drive and install from there?
Or is the only option to buy an external optical drive? (If that's the case, any guidance on which one to buy -- can I get away with a generic one or do I need to shell out $80 for Apple's "Superdrive?")
I actually have another Mac that does have an optical drive. Could that help me out somehow?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hello Volker, welcome to Lenovo forums!
Unfortunately it seems you have already tried everything to force it to work.
If it´s not recognised in bios, I would suggest to call support.
You might try a Linux live CD, but there´s no really hope
and you already know it too, as an experienced ThinkPad user, I think.

  • Replacement optical drive for '07 20" iMac.

Have a 2007 20" iMac, that was refurbed in 2008, who's optical drive(DVR-K06PD) was making horrible noises. As there seems to be a rather high failure rate with these, thought I'd replace it with something else.
Picked up a Sony AD-7630A after reading that people had success with it. Worked OK...except it wouldn't eject media consistently. Then tried a UJ85C that was available. It worked fine until you put the bezel back on the computer. Then it wouldn't load media unless you pushed it in with something. Even a swift shove wouldn't get it completely past the slot protector.
After a bit of poking around, it seems that only the K06 will work in these iMacs. I did find a repair site that mentioned a UJ-875, but that was the only other one. Hoping someone might know of good replacements. There is not a lot of info out there. Puzzling, as they've been around for a couple of years. Lots of references to the white versions.
    Thanks
PS - In researching this, I did come across a blurb from the Apple KB that recommended that these drives only be used in a horizontal position!.

The www.ifixit.com website says that your iMac needs this replacement drive; 12.7 mm PATA 8x Pioneer SuperDrive They list this part number, but I cannot tell if that is Pioneer's number or their in-house number; IF167-005-1. They say that your iMac has different mounting slots and requires this drive to correctly attach to the optical drive bracket.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01713747.pdf
Replacement optical drives with HP part numbers can be found in Chapter 3, page 33.
You can also read the instructions in chapter 4 on removing the drive and getting the part number off of it which will be normally found on a white sticker.  A 6 digit-3 digit part number (123456-001)
You can search by the part number on eBay for a used but working device or you can probably buy one new from HP by entering the part number at the link below.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 SSD Dual Drive Installation , i need to install ssd or hdd without removing my optical drive?

    salam 3lykum,
my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 need to install SSD Dual Drive in the enclosure in the laptop, but without removing my optical drive? can one help me. and without cable sata to usb to use it external.

I only know of one 2 terabyte drive that will fit in a notebook - and it comes in an enclosure that you must disassemble to get to the drive -> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=110YIC0GU53A7&coliid=I38PEBUNYX6OUM&psc=1.
HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

  • X301 (Type 2774) - optical drive not recongized under windows 7

    Dear Lenovo Community,
I have a specific problem regarding my optical drive - hope someone can help! I installed windows 7 on my lenovo X301 2774-AH5 - since then the optical drive is not recognized any more by the operation system (everything worked out fine beforehand under XP). In a first attempt I ordered a new drive - but the problem persisted - sent the new drive back and re-inserted the original drive. The device manager lists the drive (Mathsita DVD-RAM UJ-844) and reports the following regarding the device status:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
The following driver is currently installed:
Microsoft, installed: 21/06/2006; driver version: 6.1.7601.17514
I tried to install the latest driver via the lenovo web-page:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?
However, no drivers seem to be available for the combination: X301 / windows 7 / optical drives.
    Any suggestions?
    With many thanks and greetings,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that Optical drive of your Lenovo ThinkPad X301 is not recognized in Windows 7.
Is the optical drive powered on?
Ensure that optical drive is enabled in BIOS. Go to control panel -> Device manager and uninstall the driver listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives. Reboot the system, scan for hardware changes and check if the optical drive is working fine.
If the above said didn’t help to resolve your concern, try doing a registry edit. Refer this Microsoft KB article and follow the instructions.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • MBP Optical Drive not reading cds or dvds + LaunchDaemons not in Library

    Late 2008 MBP, 4gb, ram 2.66ghz, Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Hey this is my first time using this forum but I'm not computer illiterate so please don't waste my time!
My optical (disk) drive in my Late 2008 MBP is not reading dvds or cds.
I repaired disk permissions to no avail.
I had read another thread on this issue saying I could opene my library to see if i could find and delete  com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. which I had seen had worked for others who had had a 1tb WD external drive and had had their disk drives stop working because of this. However, when I went into my library the LaunchDaemons folder which was supposed to contain this erroneous file LaunchDaemons was not even there! Is LaunchDaemons called something else on Mountain Lion or what? I went through all my plist files and could not locate com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. anywhere! It is my hope that if i can find and delete this file that I may be able to reboot and have a working disk drive again!
    (note)
I could play DVDs but not CDs up until I upgraded to mountain lion 10.8.4, but after the mountian lion upgrade now even DVDs won't work.
Can anybody help me resolve this issue with the Missing LaunchDaemons folder, or have another suggestion beyond repairing disk permissions or deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist.  to make my optical drive work
I am hoping can resolve the main issue at hand which is my optical drive, but also any help on locating LaunchDaemons would be appreciated.
(I know there has been a few threads on this topic, believe me I've practically read them all, for most repairing disk permissions worked, for others who had a wd 1tb external hard drive (like me) deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. worked, but that isn't an option at this moment since i cant even find LaunchDaemons in my Library lol.
    PS.
Please don't be a smartass and say get a new optical drive, I know my MBP is old but I think the problem is not really with the hardware but rather with this absent LaunchDaemons folder.
    Thanks in advance.

Likely not. Your next step is a call to AppleCare or a visit to a repair center.

  • Older MacPro Tower - Optical Drive needs to be replaced

I have an older MacPro Tower (OS X 10.7.5) and my original optical drive needs to be replaced.  I need to read and write CDs and DVDs.  I also occasionally need to read and write DVD+R DL (dual layer) media.
Could I use a unit like the Pioneer BDR-209 DBK?  Will it work reliably with CD and DVD media?  The reason I ask is that as BDR media drops in price, I would like to start using this (due to the higher capacity) for backing up data.
I'm hoping to be able to confirm this unit will work before purchasing it.  If there is a better alternative, please let me know.  If there is a reason to stay with a traditional CD/DVD writer, then please tell me and recommend a good unit that is reasonable and reliable.
    Thank you.

here's my 2 cents on this: there should be 2 sata ports on your logic boards. However, getting to them is a pain in the rear. If you want to try that way, by all means do so. However, you can get a Sata to Pata bridge board which attaches to the rear of the Sata drive and lets it be used without having to try to find the sata connectors.  That way you can use more modern drives.  I bought something from MCE and it worked just fine (it's a blu-ray, btw). Installation was a snap.  My original CD/DVD drive failed and I didn't want to mess around trying to find a replacement ATAPI (or PATA) drive. The only real caveats I have to tell you are: If you want to play and view Blu-Ray discs in your MacPro tower, you'll have to buy a 2nd party blu ray player. Same with burning Blu-ray discs. You'll have to buy some kind of upgrade to Toast if that's what you used to burn stuff before.  however, if all you want to do is burn standard CD's and DVD's then it'll work just fine. the pioneer may have issues with sleeping, but I can't confirm this for sure either way
    just my opinion on this.

  • Installing an optical drive in a G4 tower

    Hello,
How do I remove my current CD/DVD read only drive and install a new DVD/CD double layer burner in my 400 mhz G4 tower?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Valentine

    Hi
Instructions for replacing the optical drive, including a QuickTime movie, can be found here (under Drives - CD/DVD Drive):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75312
Removing the old drive just involves releasing the drive face plate clips to remove the face plate, undoing the two screws that secure the drive carrier to the computer and sliding the drive carrier forward, unplugging the ribbon and power cables. With the drive carrier removed from the computer, it's then just a case of undoing the four screws that hold the drive in the carrier. Installation of the new drive is the reverse of this process, having made sure the jumpers on the back of the new drive are set correctly.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) - CPU and Optical drive fans rev up to 4000 rpm

    Hello,
I just want to share my experience with my rather new Imac
I bought this Imac last April and I had the fans roaring after 2 weeks of light usage. I followed instructions like resetting the SMC, unplugging the imac and restarted.
However, I started installing other software like Paragon NTFS, VLC, Firefox and also Istat nano. This happened on a more regular basis and istat nano was showing up fairly normal temperatures - an average of 50° C and I had the CPU fan at 3800 and the Optical drive fan at 4200 rpms. According to apple support, at this temperature fans should be running at factory level or a bit more. Even when I stop all activity, the fans keep up and does not stop even after a couple of hours of inactivity on the imac. Apple support recommended that I reinstall macos on a new partition and run tests and during the tests, the only software I installed was istat nano and still got the fans going with the same result - required a shutdown to bring fans at normal levels and yet average temperatures were around 50 - 55 °C.
Eventually got apple to replace heat sensors - this did not help - still got the same unwanted result, fans reving up to 4000 rpm and not stopping and all that without going above 60°C. I was at the stage to demand a complete replacement but decided to give it another couple of weeks testing.
Last test, a complete reinstall of the OS and this time, without any other software apart from standard software delivered with the mac. Ran a few things like importing over 10,000 pictures with iphoto and some other stuff to increase activity - overall CPU usage was at 5% idle for a good few hours and could not reproduce the problem (istat nano was not installed, so I could not monitor temperature). I started installing Paragon NTFS for mac and ran the same scenarios and still no fans going crazy - putting my hands over the top of the imac, can feel a slight breeze...).
Installed other software such as VLC and Firefox 5.0 but still no istat nano and same high activity, import high volumes in iphoto and also did an empty secure thrash to increase load. CPU usage was to 95 again and still fans are behaving properly.
One thing that comes to my mind with istat nano is that, when the fans get going, the ambient value change to -140 - I do not want to rush into any conclusion but is it possible that there is some interference between istat nano and those new sensors that have come in with Imac mid 2010 (from reading mac forums, Apple has added a new ambient sensor..). Because all the time I have been reinstalling the OS, I have always installed istat nano to monitor temperature and fan speed and I always got this issue. But since yesterday, I have installed clean OS, tested, added some 3rd party software but still no istat nano and I canot reproduce the issue. I have been using the same scenario during all this testing - very high import with iphoto, viewing a film, empty secure thrash, enough to use up to 95% CPU.
Has anyone experienced this? I hope this is the cause of my problem because this mac is making my life easier at home compared to previous PC and also, I want to know that my hardware is not at fault...
I will keep you posted if I get the issue again - could be tempted to install istat nano and run the tests to see if the fans will rev up after this but not sure I want to go through another 4 days of just doing this...
    regards
    Philip
