Thinkstation D10 Disk I/O

Hi, we have the funding to replace our current developer workstations which are currently Dell Precision 690's.
Two reasons:
the first is abysmal quality control issues we've had with these since receiving them, and
two, discovering that the integrated SAS controllers were complete dogs which were hindering our development with bottlenecks at the Disk I/O level when using RAID1. Our apps were slowing down by nearly a factor of 10 until we found that breaking the RAID array got us back (closer) to a speed we expected. It was pathetic to realize that Dual Duo-core2 Xeon processors were practically useless as far as speed and power when the disks were slowing everything down.
So the question before we jump ship from Dell to Levovo and leave one set of problems to invest in a different vendor of problems:
1) How can users here rate the quality control of Lenovo Thinkstations and service? We've used Thinkpads for years and I'm still fairly happy with them, but only have Dell experience when it comes to workstations and servers, so I want to hear about that.
2) What kind of disk I/O performance can I expect to see from the SAS controllers in the D10's? Are they integrated or PCI(e), etc. cards? Does read/write slow down if RAID1? Would we be better off using software raid? (saw that in many cases on the Dells). We develop database intensive apps, and it is most database access which suffers and kills us in the past, so we are looking for something where this will be solved. I don't suppose any benchmarks would help much, since it would be apples and oranges to me comparing them to the Dells, but any info might help.
Finally, what are the power requirements for a typical D10  w/ 2 E5450 processors, 16GB 2-3 drives? I'm guessing our existing APC 1500 UPS's should be plenty, but just covering all my bases.
Thanks for any input.

welcome to the forum!
it sounds like you're looking to build a system spec'd almost exactly like mine, including the UPS.
disk I/O with the on-board LSI 1068E RAID controller depends entirely on file size.   my primary array is built from two 300GB seagate drives in RAID 1.   i typically get 125 MB/sec write and 243 MB/sec read speeds with larger files.   small files don't write as quickly but still read quite well.   i have an empty 73GB 15K SAS drive installed that i use purely as swap space for the OS and applications.   this moves the random writes off of the primary RAID array and onto a dedicated drive.   i don't believe in hashing an array more than necessary.
regarding quality control and service, i find little to complain about in the D10.   after using thinkpads exclusively for over 13 years, i decided earlier this year to move over to a D10 as my main workhorse.   to this day i have no regrets.   build quality is excellent and interal layout is downright logical.   support is backed by IBM's server team and i've had excellent luck with them so far.   one of the DVD-R drives in my D10 was DOA and service overnighted a new one and called back a few days later to follow up.

  • ThinkStation D10 7 Sata device

It is possible to connect 5 sata hdd and 2 optical device (sata) in a ThinkStation D10 6493-33G.
The motherboard has 5 sata connectors and 5 sas connectors.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

update: i just installed a single SATA HDD on the SAS array successfully so it looks like you can install any SATA device on any of the 10 available connectors.   the SATA drive had to be flagged as 'online' using diskmgmt.msc to get it to show up in windows.   however, i still recommend using the hard drives on the SATA controller and optical drives on the SAS controller.
on a side note, i benchmarked the drive using both the SAS and SATA controllers and speeds were identical.

  • Brand new Thinkstation D10 server fails to boot, no beeps or screen display

This server had been working fine for several weeks and today I needed to reboot it. It has been rebooted several times before so so I wasn't trying something new.   I hit the Vista Start button and it immediately shut down.  I couldn't recall if Vista prompts you to Stand-by/restart/shutdown but I think it does - this time it didn't. :/   Afterwards, it would not boot.
    I tried:
Unplugging and replugging it in: it then attempted to boot but shut itself down again after about 30s.
    a Power Supply Reset
    Reseating the memory cards
Removing one of the 4GB memory cards
    Trying the other memory card
    Swapping the two memory cards
Inserting a bootable disk (it never gets to the point of reading anything although the drive spins up)
Checking that everything in the system board was plugged in
Making sure none of the wires were hitting anything else (shorting out)
When replacing that annoying cover from over the memory cards, made sure again I was not pinching any wires
The server does not beep and the (directly connected) monitor never comes alive to display anything when I attempt to reboot.
Per the docs, I observed the power supply Diagnostic LEDs and front panel Power LED while attempting to boot and only the green Diagnostic LED on the power supply is ever activated.  The table indicated this means replace the system board.
    Aack!
Before I head for the support # and an eventual shipment back to Lenovo, would it be worth my while to try and replace the CMOS battery?  Or would a failure of that battery still have resulted in some indication of the problem (beeping and/or screen display)?  Can anyone think of something else to check?
Just thought I'd ask around before assuming that I'm stuck with the system board diagnosis).
    Thanks

The list of things that will make a computer power down on it's own before it can ever get into the OS or initiate a video feed is a short list.
A CPU thermal trip usually occurs within 30 seconds.  This can be cause by a loose or improperly seated heat sink or a failure in the thermal grease coverage.  If your D10 arrived with one CPU and you recently installed a second CPU, try taking the second CPU out.  Should this work, verify the second CPU is the exact match to the first CPU and that the thermal grease is properly applied to the heat sink and the heat sink is securely mounted.
Ambient temperature thermal trip usually takes longer, but can be significantly shorten if the air baffle for the memory is not installed.  Computers with high Front Side Bus frequencies result in memory DIMMS that get very hot.
DC power trip.  This can happen if too much power is being drawn through any of the PCI ports or through the power supply itself.
When you are using a highend video card, check to see if the video card has it's own power connector(a small six lead box).  If it does, there is a power connector, from the power supply, to plug into it.  Without that power plugged in, the video card may appear to hum, and the it will draw too much power through the PCI slot.
Should you have added any additional PCI adapters, try removing these for a test. If that works, add one card back in at a time to isolate the offending PCI card.
Disconnect any USB or Firewire devices you may have attached, including the mouse and keyboard.  If it comes back up and you have video, power down and reconnect the keyboard and mouse only and try again.
If you have the memory card reader option and kids, check to make certain no one has inserted something into the memory card readers.  My kid inserted a quarter into one of the slots on my reader.  My workstation powered down pretty fast.   Consider moving the workstation to higher ground.
Last by not least, disconnect any additional optical drives you may have added.  Some SATA devices have both the standard PC power connector and the SATA power connector.  Do not connect both of these power sources to the same drive.  The drive will be damaged and your computer will not stay powered on for very long.
Should this all fail to resolve the issue, contact Lenovo support.  To make your support experience faster and more pleasurable, send them this list of things you tried.  If this list of possible fixes fails, it's probably a power supply or system board issue, and I would start with the power supply.
If an electronic device has a defect it will fail within the first 90 days.  Once you get it past the first 90 days, it is generally good for years.
    I hope this helps!!!

  • ThinkVantage tools and ThinkStation D10

I recently acquired a D10 (6493) and was looking forward to the same handy tools I use with most Lenovo products, ie the Productivity Center (which Lenovo specifically mentions ships with the D10), the System Update tool, the power management tools, etc.
This machine originally had Vista on it but needless to say I had no interest in keeping that so I installed Win7 Ultimate x64 on it. But when I install Productivity Center on it, it doesn't seem to recognize anything about the machine, ie no system overview with part number/serial number, etc. When I install System Update on it, the only item that ever shows in the list of updates after doing a check is a system migration tool. Despite the fact that when I had installed that there were a bunch of drivers etc that had not yet been installed. (Having an automated tool to install driver updates is one of the things I really like about Lenovo products)
Whereas when I installed a fresh Win7-Ultimate x64 install on my Thinkpad T400, the various tools recognize the Thinkpad as expected, the System Update utility displays the expected updates available and so on.
I realize that the Thinkstation may not use quite the variety of Lenovo tools that ie the Thinkpads do, but I know that they must use some, since ie some E10's I installed for a client last year certainly do.
    Am I missing something here?

since no win 7 drivers were qualified on the D10, TVSU will come up short on what's listed as compatible.   if you were installing vista again then the database would exist and the results list much more extensive.   win 7 includes many of the drivers your D10 needs anyway so you shouldn't be missing much if anything.
i'm not sure why TVPC isn't working for you.   the software is quite old and was sunset early 2010 if memory serves, which could explain it.   make sure that you're using the version for thinkcentre/thinkstation and not thinkpad.   they're different.

  • Windows 7 and Acronis in Thinkstation D10

    Hello
I open this post to share an experience about Windows 7 and Acronis Workstation.
This weekend I installed a new graphics card, an ATI HD 6850, I know this isn´t a working card, but I don´t work with CAD, 3D, renders, etc... I am developer, (programming + design).
The main feature to buy this card is Eyefinity, nVidia don´t let me use 3 monitors without SLI, (I can use desktop apps with two cards but not certain apps using Full Window), and reading post by Erik and other members, D10
    doesn´t support SLI.
OK, Windows XP don´t let me use 3 monitors, so Windows 7 is the solution. Once Windows 7 is installed and upgraded I reboot and made a backup with Acronis BR10 Workstation BootCD.
After that I installed the Lenovo Thinkvantage tools, (showing there is no need to upgrade nothing), work software, Intel SSD Tool and Windows Acronis BR10. When I finished reboot and made an Acronis BootCD backup.
I finished and I thought, "it's time to work". When I reboot, uppps, a "nice" blue screen.
First thought, I was wrong with the graphics card, there must be incompatibility, but first reboot without the software installed system works fine.
I use the Acronis BootCD to recover the second copy, (all installed), and the same blue screen, but when recover the first copy, (only system updated) works fine, so I made a copy with BootCD every time I installed
    something.
One of the crash shown "SSD getting started", I thought it was due to Intel SSD tool, but much people had installed this, and without SSD Tool, when I install Acronis in Windows, once again.
The result is I can install all software except Acronis BR10 Workstation, because in the first reboot after install Acronis the system crash and the "nice" bluescreen is shown.
I hope this can help others users and thanks to all.

I have been on Win7 Pro for quite some time and the local thumbs.db has only recently started showing up in the local folders.  I recall this was a problem when upgrading from Win XP but my laptop is a clean install from media.  I recently had
to wipe and re-install Win7 Pro on my laptop and the problem began with after the SP1 install.
We all want thumbnail caching - just not in the local folders.  The network share matter is a different animal.
What is perplexing is that Win7 uses several central thumbs.db type cache files and doesn't need the local thumbs.db file, and yet I am getting the exact same behavior as the others in this post.  I've often wondered if the junctions are causing this,
or perhaps if you sync to file shares for media like I do then once a thumbs.db is in a folder Win7 uses it - kind of a use local then central behavior.  Something for a deep gearhead to consider.
My solution that so far seems to work is to do the following:
    - I always have "show all system and hidden files" on my computers... so set that first if not set
    - In Explorer go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View and check the box for "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails"
    - Next from c:\users\[name]\ search for all files named thumbs.db
    - Delete all of the thumbs.db files (you'll need admin privs)
    - Now return to the Tools -> Folder Options -> View and uncheck the box for "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails"
This works for me, the local files no longer show up, and yet the performance is fine because Win7 is using the central db.

  • D10 (6427) RAID Configuration

I'm waiting on delivery of a D10 (6427-32U) which will have five 146GB SAS drives when it arrives. This machine has a LSI SAS controller.
Can I configure the drives in Bays 5 and 6 as RAID 1 and the drives in Bays 7, 8, and 9 as RAID 1E?
    Thanks.

  • Win XP 32bit RAID1 installation on Lenovo D10 642727M (250GB SATA x2)

I've been unable to get XP Pro installed with RAID1 on a new D10 and have read a variety of fairly relevant threads here on related matters.
The two SATA drives are connected as shipped to S1 & S2 ("SATA ports" as opposed to the alternate coloured "SAS/SATA" ports).
The onboard LSI controller has been disabled (for quicker booting and to avoid confusiion between what I understand to be two different RAID controllers).
The main system BIOS IDE settings show:
    Serial ATA ENABLED
    Native mode operation AUTO
If SATA is set to "COMPATIBLE", then there are no RAID options visible
If SATA is set to  "ENHANCED", then I can set:
SATA RAID ENABLED (no options then visible re AHCI)
         or
SATA RAID DISABLED, then I can set SATA AHCI to DISABLED.
It seems that I may need to install the OS on a sole HD and then add the second drive and switch to RAID1, but there are conflicting comments as to whether this is possible (without reload of the OS).
Should I be changing the SATA leads to the "X" connectors, enabling the LSI controller, and following Erik's advice regarding use of the LSI MegaRAID Storage Managerper his post at
    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=ThinkStation&thread.id=849
There's lots of permutations of how to approach this, each one taking more & more time. Last one I tried was loading Windows as the only drive connected under SATA compatability mode (no RAID). I still used the F6 option to load the Intel RAID drivers, and then installed "Intel chipset software installation (INF) utility for Windows XP (32-bit) and (64-bit) - ThinkStation D10 (type 6428, 6493)" (which is listed as a valid download for my model). Then shut down, re-enabled RAID in main BIOS, noted that the drives flashed up as still being part of a two volume RAID config, then failed to start to load Windows - just a flashing cursor at top left corner of screen.
Has anyone implemented XP RAID1 on dual SATA drives this before?
Should I switch to the LSI?
Any advice would be appreciated else I may need to just go and eat some worms.
    Solved!

    welcome to the forum!
admittedly, i've never set up a SATA RAID array using the intel controller on the D10 to know what's involved.   all of my arrays are SAS drives on the LSI controller.
you could use the LSI controller for your SATA drives.   in my tests of raw SATA drive performance, the LSI controller has faster read speeds than the intel, although the intel has faster write speeds.   if write speeds are more important then use the intel controller if possible.
in the BIOS, SATA must be set to "enhanced" for RAID to be configurable.
RAID setup instructions can be found in chapter 7 of the D10 hardware maintenance manual.   you'll want to configure your topography in the intel BIOS before installing an OS.
    good luck!

  • L54XX cpu's in D10 Think Stations

    Hi
My exact model is a 6493-CTO
Will the L54xx chips work on this system. I have a single E5420 in there at the moment but am looking at replacing this with a pair of L5420's I have here. The CPU support list is so out of date I am wondering if anyone has tried this combination.
Thanks for any help forth coming
    EH

OK, i got hold of an intel L5420,
I updated the bios to the latest version (2xj931a), and because i only had enough thermal paste here to place one cpu, and i needed the machine the next day. I placed it next to the E542, such that in the workst case i could just remove it.
In the bios under system specifications the L5420 is listed , so I can confirm that the cpu is written in the bios.
However something happened that i didnt expect. the idle temperature seemed quite high according to the "core temp" and "open hardware" software" and under load it heated up quite fast.
Ok i wanted to try this because this computer has to stand in an office, and i was looking for a more silent solution.
and since the L5420 only have 50W and the same performance as the 80W  E5420, i expected them to be cooler.
So i could not sleep, looked trough the web and now have a theory.
as mentioned in another thread  http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation/D10-high-cpu-temperature-72-C/m-p/1436115 the cpu and core temps are not absolute but subtracted from Tj max, that is not clearly specified.
But, i found a link, claiming to have the Tj max figures for these processors.
    http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17936945
So according to this the Tj max for the L5420 is 70 °C and for the E5420 it is 85 °C
the reference temperature of "core temp" and "openhardware monitor" are 100°C.
So for the L5420 30°C should be subtracted to have an estimation of the absolute temperature, and 15 for the E5420. Then all would make a lot more sense. Then Idle temps are for both around 35°C,
So what really matters is the distance to Tj max and not some absolute temperature.
this is also what matters for the fan cooling. If you use 4 pin coolers the speed should be variable, and its regulated by that distance to Tj max.
The interesting point is that the distance to Tj max is smaller for the L5420 (Right 3 entries)
So although the absolute temperature of the L5420 is lower then the E5420, the relative is higher, and so that in the end  its fans spin louder as the E5420.
So probably fitting L54 series is a good idea for saving energy, but not a good idea for reducing noise.
In retrospect it also seems to make sense from a physical point of view, as lower absolute temperature, the temperature gradient with the ambient air for passive cooling is lower, it is a pitty that not only the power consumption was reduced, but also the maximum operating temperature.
Ok i will, get some thermal paste and make a crosscheck, swapping the fans, to rule out that different heatsinks effected the results. . And i will check if when the L5420 is installed alone the voltage will be maybe lower such that the relative temp will remain lower.

  • Install Red Hat on D10

    Hi,
We want to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on my thinkstation D10. When we select "Installation Method" -> "Local CDROM" we get the next screen "No driver found" and under "Select driver" none of the SATA options works. Red Hat CD #1 is in the DVD ROM driver.
So how do we get pass the drive menu? How to set the right drive to read from?
    Patricia

Do you understand the difference between the source and binary package distribution? The days when it was a common task to rebuild the Linux kernel or any standard software are long gone and history. Please explain what you are trying to accomplish.

  • New D20, Windows 7/Vista can't see hard drives - also 2nd CPU questions

I just got a new D20 and aded a few 1TB Samsung hard drives to the WD one that came with it.  I can see the drives fine in both the Marvell BIOS RAID setup utility (even ran a Verify Disk on them with no errors) and from the ThinkStation BIOS and even from a Linux-based utility that I used to partition and format them with.  But neither Windows 7 RC nor Vista x64 Ultimate can see any of the drives and when I try to load drivers fro the driver CD that came with it, they aren't recognized or loaded.  Probably there is a simply BIOS setting I've screwed up but it has me stumped.  Any clues?
Also the machine came with one dual-core E5502 CPU.  If I want to add a 2nd CPU does it also have to be the same as the 1st or can I add a quad-core E5504 or even a higher speed quad-core as long as it is a LGA1366? Does it have to be a Xeon or would an i7 work?
    Many thanks in advance!

    welcome to the forum!
sounds like that D20 arrived in one piece.
the latest marvell driver for vista 64 can be found here.   i suggest trying that first to make sure this isn't a driver issue.   also check that you have the intel chipset and matrix storage drivers installed.   they can be found here.
check the BIOS and see if the AHCI mode is set to SATA RAID.   i can't remember the exact path to this setting right now but can reboot and write it down if you get lost.
on the processor, the second one does have to match the first unless you replace the first completely and install two new chips.   an i7 might work as a single processor in socket 0 (this is untested so i cannot confirm).   however, you'll need two xeons if you want to run two physical processors.
i suggest reading the following links for reference:

  • Find this BIOS Setting

    "Pre-Desktop Authentication"
Someone in another forum said he was able to get Clonezilla to work once once he disabled this setting in his Lenovo M57e. Here is his original post:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/forums/forum/799287/topic/3344366
I realize his M57e is a ThinkCentre. Does anyone know the equivalent BIOS setting for a ThinkStation D10?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

under #5 (set passwords) you can remove the power-on password.   you'll have to enter the old password, then a blank password twice by pressing 'enter'.
if all else fails you can clear the CMOS using the jumper at the bottom of the motherboard.   move the jumper to the left, reboot, wait for the beeps, shut down, move it back, and boot as normal.   this will clear all settings and passwords in the BIOS, returning it to factory state.

  • New Pb after install second processor

    Good evening
I have a problem again after switching to dual processor machine.
    I can not install my new apps -  3dsMax 2011 and Vue 8.5 -

ThinkStation D10 bi Xeon - New bios - Windows vista 64 (not reinstalled after switching to dual processor)

PB after installing second processor in D10.
I have problems getting updates to install Windows or 3D applications. Is there a particular process for windows, a special framework?
In short, since installing the second processor, I do not feel like winning a lot of power but rather to have lost $ 400!
    Someone has an idea?
    Thank you in advance

  • What temperatures are acceptable for the CPU and Graphics card?

I have Intel Xeon X5400 series CPUs and a Nvidia graphics card.
It is interesting to monitor the temperatures but only if you know what temps matter...
What temperatures are acceptable for the CPU and Graphics card?
I was not sure if this is the document of choice for the CPU or not. I was not sure I was decifering it correctly either.

Any one know what we should be watching for as far as what is too hot?
    I have a ThinkStation D10.
Did not see this in the user manual but could have missed it.

    I found my specs:
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU           E5405  @ 2.00GHz
You are correct. An E series.
I was so focused on the upgrade to the X5420 that I forgot what the system came with.
So what should I set my sensor high value to on my sensor program that shows up on the panel (taskbar)?
For the E5405 or the X5420?
SIDE NOTE: where can I get 2 E5420s or better cheap?
Not ready to give up my filters just yet. I live in a dust factory!
My girl friend sews really nice bags but creates sewing dust and fuzz.
And well there are natural fibers everywhere...
    So other than the the X5492 (150watts),  the X5482, X5472,  X5470, X5460, X5450 are all 120 watts.
Like the bulk of the X series...
    The E5405, E5410, E5450, E5440, E5420, E5430, E5470, E5462, E5472 are all 80 watts.
The L series seems to all be 50 Watts.
For many the other Processors see this:
