Thinkstation S30 how upgrade primary drive to ssd

First time poster here..
I would like to upgrade my primary sata drive to a Samsung 840 1TB 2.5" ssd and using my old drive as a secondary data drive. I would appreciate if someone can please post a procedure on how to do it particularly setting up the ssd drive as the boot drive for Win 7 pro and which internal ports to use for sata3. Thanks
My current configuration is:
S30  Win 7 Pro E5-1650 32GB
1 2TB SATA HDD
Nividia Quadro 4000

If your intent is to migrate your current image over to the new SSD drive, and then blast away everything on your original drive and retask it as a data drive, it really isn't too difficult.  You'll need to use some imaging software to migrate your current image onto the SSD.  You'll want to connect the SSD to a red AHCI port if you want a SATA3 connection.  Also remember to go into BIOS setup and ensure the SSD is showing in the boot sequence.  Disconnect your old HDD and make sure your image on the SSD boots OK when connected to the red AHCI port.  Once you're confident your new SSD is working correctly, you can reconnect the old drive, exclude it from the boot sequence, and use disk management in windows to blow out the partitions on your old drive and format it for use again.  You can likely run the old drive either on the AHCI ports (red or orange), or the blue SCU ports.  Orange AHCI and blue SCU will be limited to 3Gb/s.  If it's a 6Gb/s drive and you still have a red AHCI port open, go ahead and use that.

  • HP Pavilion DV6t-3100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - Upgrade hard drive to SSD and windows 8?

I want to upgrade my hard drive (WDC WD6400BEVT-60A0RT0) to SSD for faster performance AND upgrade to Windows 8. How should I proceed? Which should come first?
I am not very knowledgeable about these things, but I have changed hard drives before -- never an SSD though. Never had BIOS problems in these changes, so never bothered with it either. No experience about that. I am practically illiterate about that part.
What should I be careful about? Any SSD drive would work? Would BIOS (F.29) and motherboard (144A 65.38) be relevant? How should I choose my new SSD?
Do I absolutely need to clone C: drive? Could I not install windows 8 fresh/anew? What problems may I have with a new SSD?
In short -- what would be the best and least problematic way to do this?
I will back up my audio, video and office files. All copy-paste stuff. I have no problem with installing all my programs from scratch.
I couldn't find a specific thread that provides a comprehensive answer so I opened this thread.
    Thanks.

It should be pretty simple _ remove the battery and adapter _ install your SSD _ hold down the power button for 1 full minute.
Eject the DVD tray with the manual eject hole using a bent out paper clip.
Load you W8 disc _ close the tray and plug in the adapter.
Boot up, it should just boot to the W8 disc, if it doesn't there will be a quick flash on the screen when to press the esc key, after that you choose f9 (with out checking) and tell the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD ROM.
(the W8 disc will format the drive automatically)
Get the newest SSD you can find, don't buy old junk from eBay _ always buy from a reputable dealer.
I have Samsung SSD in my dv8 and has no problems, my old dv7 has an Intel SSD and it's been good too _ no problems. Stay away from bargain deals with obscure brand names.
There are no official drivers posted for your machine for W8, so you can/will have to use the generic ones, but some times the HP OEM W7 drivers will work.
Start with you Chipset driver first _ I think it's Intel _ there are no specs listed as your's is a CTO model.
Get the Chipset driver direct from Intel _ they may have updated their auto driver finder to scan in a W8 environment.
Install the rest of the drivers in any order. You can also use Windows update to find the drivers as well, it's up to you.
Be aware that some things may not work in W8, like you finger print reader.
The SSD will behave exactly the same as a standard drive, the only difference is that it will run faster.

  • Upgrading Hard drive to SSD

I am not the original owner of the Macbook, so therefore when I try and reinstall OSX, it won't let me because my user was not the one that purchased the mountain lion upgrade. This Macbook did not come with any CDs and came with Office 2011 preinstalled. Is there any way for me to install the SSD and stil keep mountain lion and office without having to pay for it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
One thing you can do is to restore the whole content of the HDD into the SSD, using the Disk Utility's Restore feature. To do this, you have to buy an enclosure for the HDD > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/External-Enclosures/
The enclosure allows you to put the HDD in it and connect your HDD using USB or FireWire. Then, put the SSD into the MacBook, and follow these steps:
    1. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start in Internet Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select "Macintosh HD" (this volume belongs to your HDD) in the sidebar, and go to Restore tab.
    3. From the sidebar, drag the SSD to the "Destination" box, and press Restore. When it finishes, disconnect your enclosure and restart the Mac.
If you want more information about Restore, read > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html
Apart, until you purchase OS X Mountain Lion, you are using a pirated OS X version. I recommend you to purchase OS X Mountain Lion as soon as possible, so you will be able to reinstall it and you will be its owner

  • Upgrading C drive to SSD SATA3--BIOS setting?

I swapped my C drive for a new SSD drive, the Samsung 850 Pro.  After cloning and making the swap, I got a message
saying that the drive was not going to run as fast as it is capable because the port for the drive is SATA 3Gb/s (SATA2) and the SSD uses SATA 6 Gb/s (SATA3).
After doing a bit of research, I learned that the port is SATA3 capable but the OEM is SATA2, indicating it was a BIOS issue.  Of course I don't know for sure that this is the case so I'm trying to find out if there's any way to make the port SATA3 to maximum the speed and make full use of the new drive, either with the BIOS or any other method.  Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi,
The message is right. Your laptop doesn't support SATA III connection. It's simply too old. You have to stick with it as there is no way how to make the laptop to be a SATA III compatible.

  • Tecra R10 - Upgrade Hard drive to SSD

Can anyone says if it's possible to change Hard disk for a SSD?
    It would be perfect!!!

Why should it not be possible? As far as I know Toshiba offers some Portege models with SSD and with SATA HDDs.
At the moment SSDs are pretty expensive and I think not the best solution.
What is the reason for HDD exchange?
I still don't have experience with SSDs but reading several articles Ive noticed that Intel X25M should be good one. According the described tests this HDD has, comparing to other manufacturers, high data transfer rate but it is pretty expensive.
Anyway, if you exchange the HDD please let us know how it works and describe your experience with it. It can be very useful for other forum members.
    Good luck!

  • T450S: After upgrading main drive to SSD drive, do not see the second pre-installed SSD drive

Hello gurus, I replaced the HD with Samsung 500GB SSD, and have been loving it.  However, ever since I did that, I do not see the 2nd pre-installed 15GB SANDISK SSD Drive anymore in the explorer.    Anyone know what I can do to make the second drive be recognizable by the computer?   This is potentially a related problem but I also have trouble installing Windows 10, because it says it can't find a partition.  Can I use the second SSD drive as the partition for the install?

This smaller SSD is designed to use software and be a cache drive. It wouldn't show in File Explorer. You can check Device Manager.

  • How do I install an ssd drive in a iMac?

I have 2 iMacs.  One is 21" 2007 the other is 27" 2009.  Can either accept a 120GB SSD drive?  How do I intstall it and make it my primary drive?

Yes, but it means some disassembly so you should search Google for articles on it.
For all Macs you set the startup drive using the Startup Disk preferences. Obviously, you must have installed OS X on a device to make it bootable.

  • How to make new Maxtor 500 GB the primary drive on my G5

I filled my 160 hd which came with my G5 1.8 Mhz with applications and Iphoto pics. Now that am shooting raw, even larger files. I would like to use Photoshop and Lightroom, new upgrades are available, but my Hd has only 14GB left. I use backup to external hd , but don't know how to retrieve lost IPhoto pics (library) nor my Photoshop pics which I had given batch names, and file information to.
I tried putting the utility disc in thinking after installing the HD it wouod be recognized and I could proceed to install Tiger, partition a bootable drive, etc. I need a good reference. My books are to vague. I wrote another post on this topic and cannot find it anywhere??? Please refer me to any good reference articles in the apple database or other posts with people upgrading their internal hard drives. I want to be able to use all my apps from the biggest drive. I have been putting photoshop images into external drive and deleting from my primary drive to make space and limp on with barely any memory in my startup disc. What do people do when using big hog programs and large images files?

  • How to Clone Primary Drive prior to, or after, adding a second drive in Ultrabay

Alright, I have a T510 with a single internal drive. I wish to add a SSD drive and make it my primary drive. I have an Ultrabay and know about the drive adapter for it and plan to use it as the new drive location.
My question is how to perform the cloning of the primary drive. I can install the new SSD in the Ultrabay and use software, previously copied to the primary(or backup) drive since the Ultrabay is now used for the SSD so I can't run a CD. The issue is how to clone. I don't wish to buy another external drive just for the cloning software CD.
I have an external hard drive that I use for backups. Has anyone cloned a copy of a drive(A) to another drive(B) and then copied it to a new drive(C)? If this is a good idea, it is easy since the CD drive is still available using this method.
The end result would be to swap locations of the drives making the SSD the new primary internal drive and the old drive goes to the Ultrabay.
    Just looking for input.
    Thanks for taking the time,
    Pete

  • Where did 30GB of unused space on my SSD main drive go?  I have a mid 2011 iMac that until yesterday had just 54GB of space occupied on the primary drive.  I imported 45 minutes of video from an SD card.  Could that have used up the space?

I added an SSD to my 27" 2011 iMac.  Although Sahidus is absolutely correct, it is much easier to add an SSD replacing the optical drive, it wasn't that bad to add it using an entirely seperate cable using SATA-III.  To me it is worth the extra hassle to install a SATA-III SSD.  This is where you are going to get maximum performance.
Although it appears complicated, if you go slow, the procedure to install an SSD drive isn't too bad.  It takes at most 3 hours, as long as you are prepared and have all the parts and tools.
    http://www.btobey.com/learn/imac-ssd-install.php
This describes how I did it.  Now I get awesome data performance from my iMac!
I think the 21.5" may be more difficult to find where to place the SSD.  But im sure it is possible.  Just be creative.

  • Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

Turn the Mac on (or reboot it) and press command-option-R as soon as you hear the startup chime. Hold the keys down until you see a globe, then release. When the Recovery Menu appears you choose Disk Utility and format the SSD for use in a Mac (Erase>Set Format to MacOS Extended (Journaled), then exit Disk Utility and choose Install OSX
You will need to be connected to the Internet and your Mac should detect your network and ask for a password automatically when Recovery Starts.

  • How to upgrade Sata Hdd to SSD on Mac Book Pro 13"?

I have a Mac book Pro 13" and I want to upgrade my Harddrive to SSD. Also want to know how to do cloning, so that no data loss will be there.
    Regards
    Sid J

what you do is first put the the SSD in an external enclosure and hook it up to your mac.  Then, open disc utility in your utilities folder.  Erase the new SSD and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Then, run the cloning program and it will make a mirror image of the HDD currently inside your mac to the new SSD in the external enclosure.  Then, remove the SSD from the external enclosure and put in it your mac.  All done!  .  If you are unfamiliar with an external enclosure, they are very inexpensive..here is one I own: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817106115. Any further questions you my have either now or during the process, don't hesitate to ask, I have done this process a handful of times and it is very easy even for the non-techie.

  • I want to have an SSD (Solid State Drive) as the primary drive and a 1TB drive for storage.

Which HP laptops support this kind of 2 drive configuration?

All the computers with more than one drive bay. What kind of computer do you have? Is it a laptop or desktop? My Pavilion DV7 1285dx laptop has two drive bays and I'm running a Corsair 128gb SSD as the primary drive and the laptop's spinner drive as the backup. It works great.

  • How to set up new SSD drives

I just ordered an SSD drive that looks to be very fast.  It is called Revodrive X2.  I also just got an SSD drive a month ago.  It is a Crucial C300.
I have read the article on how to set up drives, but my setup is a bit different and I would like to know where to put things based on two of the drives being very fast drives.  I have (or will have shortly) the Revodrive (160GB) as my boot drive.  The C300 (256GB) drive will be for programs and a few frequently used storage-type files.
I also have 2 WD black 1TB drives.  This gives me a total of 4 drives (2 SSD drives and 2HD's).  What would be the best setup for my drives?
    Asus P6T M/B

    GTX 470
4 Drives all attached to ICH10 motherboard connections

I guess you do not know that your Revodrive does not connect to a SATA port. It simply plugs into the PCIe bus.  Many times trying to put applications on a different drive than the boot drive can be complicated.
