Thinkvantage button remapping problems

Since the update to Lenovo Solution center my thinkvantage button has been opening Simpletap, a completely useless program since my x220 is not a tablet. Once I uninstalled simpletap AND the Thinkvantage toolbox, I wanted the blue key to start Lenovo Solution Center. I went to regedit and changed the "File" string to C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Lenovo Solution Center\LSC.exe and I even changed the Default string to the same exe. I know this works because I can open other programs like notepad with the button, just not LSC. How can set it to open LSC? Is the location wrong?

Hello BrandonK,
The ThinkVantage blue button can be programmed to run any executable file as long as you have the ‘hotkey utility’ installed. It’s owned by the hotkey features located in the registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY
Notepad.exe is the easiest to set up to open because you don't need to create batch files. You are only creating registry key (8001) that doesn't exist anymore because you performed a clean install.
1. Open notepad (Start > Accessories > Notepad)
2. Paste the following text:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY\8001]
"File"="C:\\Windows\\notepad.exe"
3. Save the file anywhere and name it whatever you want, but change the file extension from “.txt” to “.reg”
4. Open the .reg file you just saved, use the big blue button to open the notepad program.

Tanuj

  • Re-assign (Remap) ThinkVantage Button in Windows 8

I am trying to change which program launches when I press the ThinkVantage button on my T530 running Windows 8. As it shipped, this button launches (I think) the following file:
    %windir%\system32\dxpserver.exe
Which arrives at a window with this in the address bar:
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers\[name of my computer in this Windows installation]
This settings & advertisements launch page is not very useful to me, but launching something else or assigning keyboard input to the key would be great.
Various threads here and elsewhere say that in Windows Vista and 7, this registry value will change the ThinkVantage button's behavior:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY\8001]
    "File"="C:\\Windows\\[program I'd like to launch]"
...but that key doesn't exist, and when I add it myself there is no effect. I find two references to dxpserver.exe elsewhere in my registry but I have not had any luck editing them.
    Has anyone solved this yet?

I recently did a clean install from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and the Thinkvantage button no longer works (x230 model).
After searching the net all I could find was the reg hack suggestion for Windows 7, which does not work for Win 8 (at least I couldn't get it to work).
So..............I called support and the guy (aside from being a <filter>), said that the only thing that I could do was roll back to Win 7 to get it to work - no thanks.
    In short:
Me:  "...In Win 8 this button is completely useless?"
    Support: "Yes."
Me:  "I'm shocked that Lenovo would design their product this way."
Support:  "I don't mean to be rude, but you should have checked if it would work before you wiped your hard-drive with Windows 7."
    Me:  Silence
    Support:  Lecture on OS upgrade
I literally had to stop the guy from lecturing me on what I need to do before I upgrade my OS...
Anyhow, entertaining as the conversation was, that button is now useless...it would be nice if I could get it to do something useful...
    Looking forward to a solution!
    Cheers.

  • T400 ThinkVantage Button doesn't work

Hey, I have a problem with the ThinkVantage Button. I was plan to use Powerquest PartitionMagic 8.0 to create a new partition from my C driver. However, instead of create a new partition I lost the Lenovo driver. After that I realize my ThinkVantage Button doesn’t work anymore. I tried to use Disk Management to refund the lost driver, but it pop out some warning like this “The operation failed to complete because the Disk Managemen console view is not up-to-date.” Could anybody tell me how to make my ThinkVantage Button work again? Thank you very much. System:T400Core 2 Duo 2,26 GHz2 GB DDR3Windows Vista home basic 32x Sorry for my English.   Greeting and thanks

Hello nivek, welcome to Lenovo forums!
I think you have messed up your R&R partition, with Pmagic Use gparted instead, it will recognise the R&R partition.
Is your windows installtion already working?
Try the master boot repair kit mentioned by AndyP here.
I would also suggest to call support, for your recovery discs, cause the create R&R disc function seem also down.
Perhaps only a fresh installation, from these discs, would bring back your Blue Button function in your case.

  • Audio and Thinkvantage button

I did a re-install of the OS (XP) and for some reason the thinkvantage button (blue) and the volume control and mute botton do not now work.  Anyone know which drivers may be causing this problem and need to be reloaded?
    KB

the early marketing photo had them in blue, then they changed it to black to get colour uniformity on the keyboard keys. The new generation ThinkPad doesn't even have this dedicated button anymore.

  • Thinkvantage button not working at startup

Hi. I have the same problem with thinkvantage button.
    `story`
My pc is a z61m and I was install Win server 2003, but now I need to restore factory default.
And now i have W2k3, MBR and original EISA partition on the drive, but not working F11 on startup or if i push the thinkvantage button i can choose only:
    ESC to resume normal startup
    F1 to enter BIOS
    F12 to choose a temporary startup device/
Some time ago you give the link, I was download and make `MBR repair` but no any changes.
Can you heelp me, please, what I need to do, to diagnostic and really repair thinkvantage resque and recovery startup button/function.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
    Give this a go:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54483
You will need to create bootable CD or floppy, this is different than MBR repair. Alternatively, you can use recovery discs provided that you created them in the factory installed OS.
Last resort would be to order the discs from lenovo for a fee.
    Hope this helps.

  • 3 Volume and ThinkVantage Buttons

The 3 volume buttons (Mute, Decrease Volume, and Increase Volume), and the ThinkVantage button it not working on my T60 notepad.  If anyone has experienced this problem and has a fix for it, please let me know.

Thanks. But the problem is: I could NOT find the solution in these preferences neither. So maybe I touched a wrong keycombination, or whatsoever?

  • ThinkVantage button startup behavior changes after Rescue and Recovery

I recently bought a Thinkpad X301 (2777-CTO). When booting my computer, I see the following message: "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button". Initially, when I press this ThinkVantage button on startup, I get a "Startup Interrupt Menu", pictured at http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/4773/startupinterruptmenu.png
This menu is useful since it allows me to either enter the BIOS, start Rescue and Recovery, select a device to boot from, or simply start normally. However, after choosing the Rescue and Recovery option once, this menu no longer appears. Instead, it goes straight to Rescue and Recovery from there on without giving me the choice to enter the BIOS configuration or select a boot device.
I find this new behavior problematic for a few reasons:
    - The behavior of the ThinkVantage button at startup is inconsistent (a menu that should appear no longer does after running Rescue and Recovery once).
    - There appears to be no straight-forward way of reverting back to the desired (original) behavior.
    - The initial prompt on the power-on splash screen is now misleading. Although it still says "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button"; the way the button acts, it would probably be more accurate to say "To start Rescue and Recovery, press the blue ThinkVantage button" instead.
    - This behavior breaks the "Option Keys Display" option in the BIOS setup. Although I enabled this option, which should cause the system to display which key does what (e.g., F1 for BIOS), this is not displayed.
    - Running Rescue and Recovery results in a loss of functionality (instead of simply restoring the system to the initial state).
    - And anytime I press the blue ThinkVantage button (as instructed) instead of F1 or F12, I end up wasting several minutes, waiting for Rescue and Recovery to finish booting before I can properly shut it down and try again.
This problem appears to have existed for a long time (since 2008; http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/241845-thinkvantage-boot-menu-boots-straight-into-rescue-... ). However, the only "solution" that I have found is just a workaround: avoid pressing the ThinkVantage button (as instructed by the power-on splash screen).
The ideal solution would be to have a BIOS (or Rescue and Recovery) update which will prevent the ThinkVantage button from losing its original function after running Rescue and Recovery. I know that this is a minor bug, but this bug and another BIOS bug (in the network boot order menu, which I'll post after this one), which arose in less than a week after I received the computer, makes me question the ThinkPad's reputation for high-quality engineering.

  • IOS 6.1.3 WIFI button disable problem on iPhone4S - It is definitely a BUG

    Hi Apple Fans
I have a full house of Apple products from iPhone -> iPAD -> iPod -> Mac -> AirPort, and I am suffering from WIFI button disable problem after upgrade to iOS 6.1.3, without any clue after calling Apple Support, factory reset and reload iPhone for more than 10 times.  I also try all tips on Apple Support Communicties except put it into a freezer, still no any luck.  Apple Support suggests that my iPhone may be factly!
Tonight, I can get my WIFI back in below sequence:
    1. Switch to English language from Chinese
    2. Turn Cellular Data Option to off
    3. Reset Network Setting
After the phone reset, the WIFI row show 'Not Connected', and I can select my home WIFI (Airport Express) without trouble.  To prove my finding is workable to all case, can you try the same and update here if it works for you?
    Good Luck!
PS: I always believe it is a BUG.

    Hi,
I sympathise with you as my iPhone 4s is 7 months old and is also greyed out.  I tried everthing except the potentially stupid one of putting the iphone in a freezer!  I took the phone back to the vendor who sent it away and repaired it.  But alas after a month it is greyed out again.  I have again returned to the vendor and he will repair it again.  I asked him how and he told me it is a software conflict and he has to spend around 9 hours downloading a patch repair.  Apple are aware of this issue and I feel completely let down because they have not posted a fix on the net.  Presently I am living and working in Dubai, back in the UK I am sure my iPhone would have been exchanged for a new one.  I need my iPhone for my work and cannot afford to just buy a new one so I have been let down and despite for years being a supporter of Apple and their products I shall think twice before investing in any more Apple products.

  • How can I get ThinkVantage button working again? (after a full HD rebuild)

    WindowsXP Pro, ThinkPad T60   (2007-F4G / UT0F4UK)
    Hi
How do I get my Thinkvantage button working again?
    Background:
I had a virus attack and as a precaution I zero-ed my ENTIRE hard disk (using KillDisk). I have managed to re-install most things, including I now have an icon on the taskbar called "Launch Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox". However I would prefer it to be fired up by my pressing the (blue) ThinkVantage button at the top of my keyboard.
I have refused point blank to pay the (outrageous) price of GBP 40.00 for Lenovo to send me a CD with Windows etc on it, but have managed (eventually) to rebuild the entire disk driver by driver until the ThinkVantage Toolbox thing (version 6.0.5449.31) could take over and bring my drivers up to date when I Update my system.
(It's just that they may have gone in incorrectly??)
Is there something I should have done during installation.
    Ship

    Hi Ship,
    1. Install these for thinkvantage button:-

  • Enabling ThinkVantage button after clean OS install (X230)

I'm going to install an SSD in the mSATA slot of my X230 and then do a clean install of Windows 7 x64 on it (setting the SSD to bootable and the HDD to not bootable).  I'm concerned that this will render the ThinkVantage button unusable (particularly since that's what happened when I upgraded my X61s from XP to Win7).  If this happens, is there a procedure for restoring its functionality?  Thanks.

Because Windows is supposed to be installed differently on an SSD than on an HDD.  It takes care of itself with a clean install.  With a clone I have to go in and reconfigure it.  I believe it's just activating TRIM and AHCI, but I'm not sure that's all.
