Thinkvantage CSS Password Manager Import Problem

Good morning,
I have run into a bit of a problem.
Backstory:  About a month ago my HD crashed on my T61, and since I was thinking about upgrading to Win7 Professional from XP Pro SP3, it seemed like the perfect time since I had to do a clean install anyway.  Just before the crash I backed up everything on the HD to a backup drive including the previous version of CSS and password manager.
Present Day:  I have managed to upgrade to Win7 Pro, reinstall all of the applications, documents, etc, and install the latest version of CSS that works with Win7 Pro 64bit.  Everything is working fine including Password Manager.
I have found the .PWM file on the backup drive and attempted to import it to the new version of PWM.  It keeps asking for a password.  I have tried every password (including system password) to no avail.
Can someone assist me in finding a work around or a way to import this file?  There are too many entries in this file that cannot be re-created from memory.
Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the suggestion. There is one thing I need to clarify: I did not export the backup from the older version CSS Password Manager (8.30.0045) but was trying to use the .pwm file from its data folder in my backup archives. I tried what you suggested, re-installed the older version (the oldest I could find from Lenovo website, CSS 8.30....), then there were two options I was facing: import the *.pwm file from the back (even though it was not originally exported), I was asked import password, for which I tried every possible one I've used before but none worked.  Then I directly put the *.pwm file into the same path location %user%\AppData\Roaming\Lenovo\Client Security Solution and hoped the older version will be able to pick it up upon opening. No, it did not. Even more strange things, it asked for my password and then disappeared without giving either the password manager GUI or any error.
Then I did what you said to clear the TPM in the BIOS and got no luck of anything different.
Any other advice is highly appreciated!

  • Newbie needs help comprehending CSS Password Manager functions

    Hello All:
    I own a TP W500 4062-27U running Windows 7 Ultimate.  The computer is trouble-free.
I am seeking a solution to the following need:  An application that will securely remember my passwords for various websites, etc. and enable me to log in using the fingerprint reader or similar.
I am aware that Lenovo provides both Fingerprint Reader software and Client Security Solution software, but I don't know whether or not either one (or both) of these applications will provide the functionality I am seeking.  I have spent a fair bit of time looking around the Lenovo website, but cannot find a document that describes (in a general, overview manner) the functionality that CSS provides.
I don't need to log into VPNs, or company networks, or anything really fancy like that - I just need something that will enable me to log into about 20 different websites, using a different password for each website.  Right now, I'm generally using the same password for every website (that way, I can remember what it is), and as I think you will agree, that is probably not a very good practice so far as security is concerned.
If anyone could point me towards a document that explains how I can get CSS to do what I want it to do, I would be very grateful.  If CSS does not have the functionality I am seeking, I would very much appreciate a recommendation of software - possibly non-Lenovo - that does provide the functionality I am seeking.
Thanks very much for your assistance.
    Michael

    Hi PanEuropean2,
    Welcome to Lenovo Forum!
In regard to your question, Client Security Solution (CSS) should be the right fit for you.
I have a T410 with Win 7, and have several passwords to remember which is really killing me. However, by using CSS, Fingerprint software and Password Manager, I need to enter all the passwords only once when access a website or a tool, and let it saved in CSS.
The next time i turn on the machine and open up a website which needs user ID and password, I just need to swipe the fingerprint that I've enrolled, then viola!
Just take note that after the first swipe of fingerprint, tools or website that are to be accessed later will automatically show the password in the box directly without having to swipe fingerprint again. You just need to click to log in. I"m not sure if this is the experience you're looking for, however, no harm to give it a try.
Here's the user guide for CSS. It has
    Client Security Solution components
    Client Security Solution installation considerations
    Client Security Solution features
    Hope this helps

  • CSS - Password Manager and Firefox 6.x

I have just installed Client Security Solution for windows 7, 64bit.
I have Firefox 6.0.1 installed. Everytime I start Firefox, I have the following message:
    "TypeError: Components.classes[TvtPwmComponent_CID] is undefined"
Apparently, this is the Password Manager extension which does not work in Firefox version 6 or above. Is there any updates for this or I just disable it?
    Any idea is appreciated.
    JN

    hey jamesnb,
currently there is no patch for FF 6.0.1 (sorry about that). Only thing i can recommend is to disable Password Manager for the time being.

  • CSS Password Manager not working

Password Manager stopped working when I installed FireFox.  Found the Fix on the downloads page,  Applied the fix, it still doesn't work.  Called Lenovo Technical Support.  They suggested that I Uninstall CSS, reboot, and reinstall CSS.  Did that and still no luck.
I would like to totally clean CSS out of the system, registry, etc. and then try a reinstall.  Can anyone tell me how to manually remove CSS from the laptop.
I'm using a X61 Tablet running Vista Enterprise..
    All help will be appreciated.

I can, idzham, but where do I find the .exe file for reinstalling it? Losing that key, and being completely locked out of my machine, concerns me.

I've updated my Firefox to 7.0.1 and have noted the greyed out message within the FFox add-ons that the ThinkVantage Password Manager is incompatible with Firefox 7.0.1   I have search for a fix or patch from Lenovo that address this issue with this version of FFox  but have not found any solutions. Does anyone have an ear to a possible solution? Thanks!

    Hi,
There is a patch for FF support.
     Please check  the link below,
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Password-Manager-compatibility-issue-with-Fire...
If you are using FF8.0 and it is not working after the patch is installed.
    To the following steps:
Disable password manager extension from FF,
And find the file "tvtpwm_jstypes.xpi" and drag it into FF to reinstall the extension.
This file is usually in folder, "c:\swtools\css83_firefox5_patch"

  • Client Security Software /. Password Manager / Windows Authentication

I have a T61 w/ XP Pro SP3 installed w/ all current patches & updates installed, Client Security Software v 8.21.006.00 installed, ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software v5.8.4.5476 & the most current BIOS updates installed. I am having a problem with the Client Security Software.
The CSS/Password Manager software is supposed to hold all of my passwords and authenticate me as I access webpages that require an account & password for access. When the software is working correctly, the Client Security Software / Password Manager package is supposed to drop into the system tray in the bottom right corner of windows...pretty much running as a service.
After I login to Windows, the Client Security software starts up, I am prompted for my fingerprint (or password, either appears to work)...which then is supposed to authenticate to my Windows password. I have set my windows password and machine local password to using the same password.
The CSS/Password Manager software then appears to authenticate. I then get the Password Manager application "splash" screen and the Password Manager application opens. The application window appears to be correct and offers several different password options (just like it is supposed to). When I close the Application window, the application icon is in the system tray, running like a service. The Password Manager application window is hiding the small application "splash" screen. When I click "ok" on the application splash screen, the Password Manager "splash" screen disappears AND the Password Manager application icon disappears from the system tray...shutting down the functionality of the application.
When I talked to Lenovo Support, they said,
    uninstall the Client Security Software,
    uninstall the Fingerprint Reader software,
    reboot the laptop
press F1 to go into the BIOS
    disable the security chip
clear out / delete cached fingerprints
F10 & yes to save changes
    reboot
    login to windows
reinstall each application (do not enable the security chip)
    reboot
Register / enroll fingerprints as required.
Logout/login and at the CSS screen enter the Windows password.
Problem still exists as described above...
I also did this complete process all over again AND DID enable the security chip.
Prpblem still exists as described above
I have done everything they said to do and still the applications do not function correctly.
Can anyone give me some help here?
    Thanks
    Cliff

  • Client Security Solution--and Password Manager--no longer autoruns

My T61 was working wonderfully until recent installation of antispyware, antivirus programs.
Prior to that, on boot, I could always see a brief CSS splash screen, and, more importantly, Password Manager would always kick in automatically, to load password data or to ask if I wanted it to remember something.
Now, although Password Manager remains an icon in the system tray, it not only does not detect need for input, hotkeys do nothing, despite being marked enabled.
I downloaded CSS 8.1 from the website (although this was still installed), and ran the "Repair", but still no joy.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again--as you suggested, a thread well worth reviewing.
In my case, I opted for the Rescue and Recovery Quick Restore--albeit with much fear and trepidation, since, unlike the roughly equivalent MS System Restore, this feature does not tell the user the date of the restore point that is being recreated.
As it turned out, this took me back to a point when Norton Internet Security was only partially removed--which created the added anxiety of (a) inability to connect to the Internet through Explorer or Outlook 2007 and (b) inability to launch any Office 2007 program!  (That last caused yet another twist, since the instructions I had previously followed to completely removed Norton were now saved as .docx files....)  Although Norton Internet Security was still present on the desktop, and ccApp.exe was obviously running (and unable to shut itself down on Restart), Add/Remove Programs (the first step in the removal process) would not work--"the module is missing."
Fortunately, I was able to download the Symantec Removal Tool through another computer onto a USB drive, copy the program to the T61, and run it there.  (Note that although Explorer would not load fully, Internet access of a sort was still available as witness System Update and Microsoft Update downloading without difficulty--though MS could not complete installing updates for Office 2007 with Norton still in the picture.  This matters because the Removal Tool accesses the net.)
Once Removal had done its thing, Explorer, Office 2007, and Password Manager again worked as before.
Sadly, I still don't know what the necessary ingredients for CSS/Password Manager are--there ought to be a listing of what files these otherwise excellent programs require.  And I'm not sure what approach to firewall, antivirus, and antispyware I ought to take, given the possibility that the programs I replaced Norton Internet Security with caused CSS/Password Manager grief.
    Sigh.

  • Client Security - Password Manager reinstalling

    Hello all,
For an unknown reason, I have been experiencing this problem over and over.  Whenever I restart my computer and open a new explorer window, windows installer pops up with CSS trying to install the password manager.  No matter how many times i let it install, it occurs every time.  In addition, I keep receiving the 3 Chrome Registration Failed messages when starting firefox because the program continues to try and install the Think Vantage password manager, even when I try to cancle it.  Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Geoff

I experienced the same issue with IE 7 on Vista Ultimate SP1 after installing the packages referred to in Microsoft KB950124 and KB950125.
The following procedure worked for me:
    1.       Run IE7 as Administrator.
    2.       After completion of the CSS-Password Manager installation, restart the PC.
    Hope this will help.

  • How do I "refresh" a password in Password Manager if it was done in another Browser (IE)?

I had my Facebook password saved in Firefox. When I updated password a year ago, I did it in Explorer as Firefox was not loaded on that computer.
Now that I am back using this computer with Firefox fulltime, I realize password was never "updated" in Password Manager. Problem is it never prompted me to save the password and cannot recall what it is anymore. And Firefox autopopulates the original password when I go to enter a new facebook password.
Is there any way to "refresh" Firefox or get it to prompt a request to save the password? The key does not show up in the browser bar and wonder if somewhere in the options or settings, I can prompt it?
    Thanks in advance

  • X200 ThinkVantage Password Manager

Hi. We are in the process of removing Local Administrator priveledges for most of our users. One of our users uses the fingerprint reader and ThinkVantage Password Manager software to control his Windows login and his Lotus Notes login on his X200 tablet.
Since removing his local admin priveledges, the user reports that he can no longer login to Lotus Notes using his fingerprint. He is only presented with the normal Lotus Notes login screen. When attempting to launch the Password Manager by pressing the blue ThinkVantage button above the KB and then selecting Manage, nothing happens. If his local admin rights are restored, he can login to Lotus Notes with his fingerprint, and the Password Manager launches properly.
Does anybody have any tips to get this working without local admin rights? Thanks!

    Hi,
first I would like to make a short explanation on how Fingerprint and CSS (Client security Solution aka Password Manager) are working in this situation:
After you confugred the system and the user swiped his fingers into the FPR applications and sensor, it hase captured also all other metadata, like the user role, name, domain, etc.
In case anything changes, then the application will react accordingly and in your case it will just kind of react, like if it would not recognize the login for Lotus notes.
So here is what I would advice to do:
    - remove all the swiped fingers from the FPR for the user, that you want to change (remove the Admin account) and make the appropriate changes to the system and the account
    - first of all as an Admin enter Fingerprint console and configure it , so that also a non-Admin user can log on and use the Fingerprint:
Settings->User Privileges-> check all the boxes, that are in this tab
    - log on as the affected user
    - swipe the fingers and make sure, that also CSS is configured, as it was previously
    - reboot the machine
This should be enough, to get the metadata corrected and the new, or better say the old user will be able to use the ususal Fingerprint loging without any problem.
Please let me knwo, if you will have any add questions, or will have this situation tested.
    Cheers

  • Do any versions of FF support the use of Lenovo's ThinkVantage Password Manager s/w and fingerprint scanner?

Lenovo Edge 15" laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit) and using Thinkvantage Password Manager Ver 3.20.0330 and TouchStrip Fingerprint Sensor (UPEK).
The password manager is to set to restrict logins to websites to fingerprint but when logging into websites I am not given the option to use the fingerprint reader -(the login info stored in the P/W manager is entered and login takes place). I have seen elsewhere that FF 3.6 has problems supporting this combination and wonder if any earlier versions of FF would be suitable or if FF 4 is likely to support it.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Kent1968
I would recommend, if you have it set, to go to a restore point before you uninstalled the password manager version that did not give you a problem and not use the new version until this bug is resolved.
If the fingerprint light is not showing up, then it is probably not limited to you and I hope Lenovo checks it out.
Too bad the newer version seems to load slowly - I will check it out as well.

  • ThinkVantage Password Manager unable to recognize fingerprint reader

Hi, I have a X220 running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. My ThinkVantage Password Manager version is 3.20.0333.00, and my fingerprint reader driver version is 1.5.0.289 from AuthenTec. My ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software version is 5.9.5 build 7038.
However, when authentication is required for the Password Manager, a Client Security Solution pops up showing "The requested operation requires fingerprint authentication, but the device is not installed. Please make sure the device is connected and retry the operation."
I am also unable to find the "enroll fingerprint" option in my Password Manager.
    Anyone have similar problems? Thanks.

Did this work previously, and it just stopped working?
What version of Client Security Solution is installed?  To use that version of Fingerprint software, it needs to 8.30.0049 (or later)

  • W520 - Lenovo Password Manager - Can .CSV or .DAT files be imported from other Password Managers?

    The title says it all!
Currently using Norton Identity Safe's standalone password manager, but would like to start using Lenovo's instead. Attempted to import .DAT and/or .CSV files from Norton, but no option for these file types appeared in Lenovo's Password Manager.
If not an option to import directly, is it possible to add one of the files to the location Lenovo stores the password manger entries?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello,
No you can't import .CSV or .DAT files into Password Manager. It uses a .PWM file format, and uses a 256-bit key Advanced
Encryption Standard (AES) with Microsoft CryptoAPI. You can export your info to be used in another machine with the Thinkvantage Password Manager installed, but not from another password manager.

  • Thinkvantage Password Manager - Which Browsers supported?

I am currently using an Edge 15" running Windows 7 (64 bit) and Firefox 3.6.12. I have Thinkvantage Password Manager (3.20.0330.00) installed together with a fingerprint reader.
The password Manager is not opening when I log into web sites to capture the login info because Firefox has disabled the add in associated with it due to compatibility problems.
Can anyone suggest a browser that does work properly with the password manager?. If possible I would like to avoid IE and stick with an earlier version of FF - do any of the earlier versions work?
    What's been your experience?
