Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery - old backups still showing in R&R

When I initially set up my network and installed Rescue and Recovery, I created a network share that I did my backup to.  I reconfigured my network and deleted the network share (and the subsequent backup data) outside of Rescue and Recovery and did not delete the backups from within Rescue and Recovery.   Now, my problem is that R&R still thinks that those backups are supposed to exist and when I do a Delete Backups, they show in the list, but I cannot delete them.  If this were the only issue (showing in the list) I would just write it off as an annoyance.  The issue I have is without that network share defined and active, when you start R&R it appears to hang for several minutes and does not appear to be starting - after a few minutes, it pops up a window asking to define the network path.
Before I try uninstalling and re-installing (which I think I have done at least once), is there a way to clean up R&R and what it thinks about this network share and the subsequent backups?

Please take a look at this thread. I'm not 100% sure it's exactly what you're looking for, but may point you at the right place to look.

  • Rescue and Recovery-old backups

Hi, I recently reinstalled my system (returned everything to "factory settings" etc.) I created some backups before I did that on an external drive, but now I can't see them using rescue and recovery! Is there anyway to get RnR to see these backups and restore individual files? Or am I SOL? If I can't use these old backups, is there anyway to delete them from the drive?
    thanks!

    Hi,
can you tell me, where did you stored the backups? On local HDD, or on HPA of RnR ?
Make sure, that once you reintalled the OS and you have it on the local HDD, then  I assume ,the backups are gone.
You can also check, if you have it on your local HDD by performing following steps:
    - make sure, that you can view hiden and protected files
    - go to C:\, or D:\ where you should see a folder called RRBackup, or similar -> This folder contains the backups
    cheers

  • ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 delete backups on T60p?

I have been trying to delete old backups on t60p with ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4.21.0015.00 to make more room on my main and backup hard drives, but it says that I don't have enough room to delete the backup.  I also have been trying to figure out what are the best ones to delete, as some seem to be more complete.  The main drive has 8.26 GB and my backup has 1.74 GB.  Can I just delete the older folders on the hard drive?  Also, how do I create room on the recovery partition or remove it?  It is taking up half of my 100 GB, so I am constantly running out of room.

    vguinnane, welcome to the forum,
in the advanced settings of R&R - view/delete backups - select the last backup and delete it on it's own, you should then be able to delete the other backups.
As the backups are dependant on each other deleting everything between the first and last backup will render the last backup useless, you must work backwards.

  • Bitlocker & ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery on 64 Windows 7 Enterprise

    Hi
I am attempting to setup ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 on a X300 ThinkPad with 64bit Windows 7 Enetrprise and BitLocker enabled. A installed ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 after turning on BitLocker, as stated in considerations in ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 readme file. When I press the blue ThinkVantage button and then F11, it starts ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4, but shortly after splash screen with life-belt appears the notebook restarts and BitLocker requires keyfile to continue. When I give it the key file it boots nomally. However if I restart and attempt to enter ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 again - the same story repeats, so I'm unable to use ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4. Then I disabled BitLocker encryption on boot drive, and ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 started to work normally, without touching anythnig else.
So, finally are Bitlocker & ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 4 compatible on 64 Windows 7 Enterprise? Any one having success with this combination?
    Thanks, George

  • AHH Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery won't let me get into Windows RecoverY!

So I'm having the error Windows failed to start; NLS data is missing or corrupt. What I've read on the internet told me said that I should enter the Windows Repair disk and proceed. I don't have an optic drive, nor was my tablet (X61T) shipped with discs. I've created a bootable image of the windows recovery disk on a USB, but when I enter it the only option is to go into thinkpad rescue and recovery. There's no way around this as far as I can see. Also, windows doesn't start at all, no safe mode, no last working configuration, none of those.
Thinkvantage R&R doesn't let me do the same repair function as Vista, nor can it restore from vista's backups as far as Ican see. The only option is Full restore, as quick restore is not pressable.
HELP! I don't even want this stupid program anymore, is there any way to uninstall it?
And I was going to just make a copy of the HD and factory reset it, but when I recovered all the files and was double checking, some of the files which I have hidden were missing, so I can't go about wiping it anymore. Please help!

  • Rescue and Recovery: No backups available for "local hard drive" with Full Restore

I can see all my backups in "view all backups" and can restore individual files, although when I select the option for "full restore", it reboots my PC and brings up the Rescue and Recovery interface which gives me the option for "full restore".  When I select "full restore", it asks me to select the source.
As my backups are stored on my local hard drive, I select that source, however the scroll box is empty (no backups available for selection).
Can anyone recommend a solution to fix this problem, or should I remove and re-install Rescue and Recovery, then create new backups (and hope they appear in the list for full restore)?
I am running Rescue and Recovery 4.21.0016.00 on a Lenovo T61p with XP SP3.
    Thanks.

  • Error 25014 when trying to install Lenovo Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery! Please help!

Hi there! I recently restored my laptop with a general copy of Windows 7 pro 64 bit. I had to redo all the drivers and software (of course). I had installed Rescue and Recovery before but had never used it. I tried to reinstall it today and it kicks back every time with the same error message (error 25014 code=6)! I had installed linux but deleted it and installed Windows again. I also have a 21gb partition not even being used ( i have no clue how to combine them). Any advice as to how to get it working will be appreciated! Thanks for your help in advance!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Error 25014 rc=6 is error installing the RNR boot manager.
    Provide some information:
(1)Did your machine ship from Lenovo, with Lenovo factory system? If so what operating system was installed? vista, windows 7 home, pro etc? This would install with 3 partitions: system_drv, Lenovo recovery, (C).
(2)you state: I recently restored my laptop with a general copy of Windows 7 pro 64 bit
Does this mean you DID not do a Lenovo factory restore, but actually installed a retail version of win7 pro?
I will assume win7 pro retail for now.
(3)you state: I had installed Rescue and Recovery before but had never used it.
Was this in the past, lets say, on a factory shipped Lenovo system?
(4)you state: had installed linux but deleted it and installed Windows again. I also have a 21gb partition not even being used
    ===
It appears to me, your HDD had a system on it.  I see Ubuntu mentioned in your other posts. Your HDD had multiple parttions on it, including  the 21GB partition. Then you decided to install a retail version of windows 7 pro.
During a install of retail windows, you have to pay close attention as to where it will install.
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html
    Note steps 7 and 8.
It appears you did the windows install ON TOP of existing HDD, with preexisting partitions.
    ===
    Rc=6
The simple answer is RNR is already installed.  Did you uninstall RNR before the install?
    The complex answer:
When RNR install went to add its entries to boot manager,BCD (boot control data), it did NOT like the contents of the BCD, ie other entries parked in the BCD,ie, Linux. It expects to have 2 BCD slots used, windows and windows RE.
    ===
Give this some thought. See if it matches your situation.
    ==
I would erase the HDD via a standalone utility, then install win 7 pro retail, and all issues should clear up.
This Erase/delete can be done during windows install.  see steps 7 and 8 above.

  • Thinkvantage rescue and recovery

I did a rejuvenate and the set was months back. I tried to recover files from the pre recover listing and can see them but the log or encryption cannot be found. It also tell me that I need to use thinkvantage 3.0 to be able to recover the files.  Is there a way to undo a rejuvenate like windows recovery does? Is there a way to get thinkvantage 3 and pull the files or backups to a new location and then try a new recover? How do I tell what version of thinkvantage I have installed? Is there a way to disable thinkvantage and use the regular windows restore to an earlier day function in XP? December 29, 2009

Same problem here, at least I think so.  I did a "rejuvenate" with RnR v. 4.21 without realizing it would lose all my data files.  So now I would like to return to the previous state. Is this possible? Apparently not, based on the RnR list of backup dates, which only lists the old ones and nothing for a backup during/prior to rejuvenation.
However, I can see in the RRbackups folder (using safe mode) that a folder exists, created at the time of the rejuvenation, that is quite large and has lots of data files.  These, of course, are not in a usable form unless I can get RnR to decompress them into their original form.  I can also see, in the registry (HKLM/software/Lenovo/RnR/Backups/local) that there is data describing this backup, along with the other two.  Thing is, its specs are slightly different: the others have times in the Name registry, but the recent one is called "Pre-Rejuvenation." It is also missing some registry specs that are in registry for the other restore pointa: DisplayDate, DisplayTime, StartTimeHigh, StartTimeLow, and Version.
I can add these to the registry to try and fool the program into listing, and using, this as a legitimate restore point (which it should!).  But if I use it for this purpose, the risk is that it will not restore correctly and then really gum up the works. I can't figure out any other way to get back to where my computer was yesterday (including a year's worth of data lost).
    Any advice?

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.5: Boot Environment does not list Backups on USB Drive

    Hello,
I have a fresh installed Windows 7 on a X 230 and am now setting up my backup. The notebook came without an OS so I installed Win7, all drivers and the Thinkvantage Software myself. Then I made a backup with Rescue and Recovery 4.5 to an external USB 3.0 HDD. The Backup is listed in the Windows program, but when I boot to Rescue and Recovery, the backup is not listed.
Since there arent any options I could change during the backup or the recovery, I have no idea what went wrong..
    Thanks!

In the standalone boot of RNR, go to the advanced GUI, chose Restore.  After a few screens, you will see a restore from location, default is Local Hard drive.  This is a drop down list.  USB option is available in the drop down list. The USB must be connected during the standalone boot. If the backup is NOT the same UUID as your system, check the box that says show backups from all systems.
Also read my post dated Nov 22,2011 .  RNR backup reverts to local.  This may not apply to USB backups.

  • Deleting Rescue and Recovery backups

I using WinXP+SP3 and Rescue and Recovery 4.  I launch Rescue and Recovery via Start-Programs-ThinkVantage-Rescue and Recovery.  In the Window that opens I click 'Change schedule, name a backup, delete backups'. Another Windown opens and I can see my backups listed at the bottom of this Window.   When I select a backup to delete,  a small Window opens that asks if I'm sure I want to delete the backup.  I say 'yes'.  Another Windown opens that says 'Please wait while the backups are deleted'.
My issue is Rescue and Recovery seems to hang and never finishes the  backup deletion.  I see the access light on my external drive blink at first so Rescue and Recovery seems to be doing something at first but the 'Please wait while the backups are deleted' never closes.  I let the delete run all night and when I got up, the Window was still there.  I tried to delete another backup and got the same result.
What is causing the problem?  I can see the contents of my external drive in Windows Explorer so I know my PC can access it.

    rmbowma, welcome to the forum,
delete the last backup on it's own first, you should then be able to delete other backups.
Please remember that they are incremental backups, you can't delete for instance backups 2-5 leaving 1 & 6 as 6 is dependent on 2-5.
    Hope this helps

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.2 Does not Launch from Start Programs Thinkvantage

I have a T61 with XP SP3.  I recently installed and uninstalled the version of Ubutuno that can be booted from Windows.  I played with it for a few days then uninstalled it.   Then I unistalled Rescue and Recovery using Add Remove programs...I am thinking of getting a SSD and I wanted to remove large programs before I image the disk.
I changed my mind and tried to reinstall Rescue and Recovery.  I got the error saying that my boot space was too small.  I used the Lenevo mbr repair feature that I found on this board.
I was then able to install R&R 4.21,  and I was able to create recovey disks using the create recovery disks program
However, when I try to launch  Rescue and Recovery,  (Start, Programs, Thinkvantage, Rescue and Recovery). the disk spins and I get the hour glass on the cursor...and the hour glass goes away after about 7 seconds...the disk continues too blink off and on, but the program will not launch.  The rrservice.exe and rrpservice exe services are running.  I tried disabling Kapernsky virus, and that did not help.  I have rebooted several times.
Any suggestions!  I will buy you a beer for sure!!
    Thanks
    Jeff

My other post just  gave you the basics.  I got tired to typing the same info over and over.
    Two issues lately.
    (1) I am going from vista to win7, and I have a Factory shipped Lenovo. RNR wont install.
    (2) I have win7 on a factory ship, and I want to go from Hdd to SDD.  USB recovery wont boot.
    ==
I take my backups to a 2nd HDD.  Also, every few months, I backup to a DVD set, HDD's may last 3 years, maybe 4. You dont want your loved backup on the C drive, and HDD fails. On top of that, if you back up to the C drive, the HDD grinds away. Read C, write to C\rrbackups.  Backup will run faster to 2nd HDD or USB.
    ===
You state a pristine Vista.  I am guessing it was a Factory shipped Lenovo with Vista.
The TIP in the other post is if you know of this issue BEFORE windows 7 install.
At the time during Win 7 install, and it is deciding where to put itself, there is a Default Recommended and I think a drop down list of other options.  This is tricky.  Example, (a). park me in the current C partition. (b) park me on the whole HDD.
Did you upgrade the Vista, inplace to win7 or did you clean install win7 to a blank C partition.
Lets see if you have a recovery(vista) partition.
Go to control panel>admin tools>computer management>disk management. Check to see if other partitions show up other than the C drive. Recovery partition should be around 10 GB. Sometimes this partition is labeled IBM_Preload or similar.
    Solution/workaround
I dont have 1 that i have tested.  Maybe other users can offer suggestions.
(1)You could delete the Q, but this might not clean up the MBR/BCD(boot control) entries.
    (2) Backup your loved win7, erase HDD, then restore.  MAYBE a win7 backup allows ignoring the Q partition.  I am not an expert with using win7 backup, and I dont have a q drive.
*** all this is time consuming**, risky, and may not   solve the issue.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 and X31 HPA Restore Your Backups

    Good morning!
Installed a new hard drive on my X31. I used a purchased set of official restore media to do a clean install of Windows XP with the HPA Predesktop Area in place.
Two weeks later all of my Windows and ThinkPad updates are complete and I am ready for a clean backup.
I installed Rescue and Recovery 4.23 and after a false start, I successfully made a backup to a USB Hard Drive that will boot into ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. The Windows software seems to be fully functional.
On normal bootup, however, if I use F11 or the Access IBM button, I am taken to the original Predesktop HPA interface -- so the partition is really there. The Factory Restore appears to now be functioning if I ever wanted to use it.
My problem (or questions) relates to the "Restore Your Backups" icon. When I select it, I get the message: "IBM Rapid Restore PC is not installed. Press the enter key to reboot to Windows and install IBM Rapid Restore PC."
Therefore, that portion of the HPA is not accessible.
And, therefore, other than a factory restore, there is no way to run restore from the HPA.
    So, here are my questions:
    1. Is there anyway to put the Rescue and Recovery 4 predesktop area in this HPA?
    2. If so, would it wipe out the Factory Restore option?
    3. Should I have made at least one backup with "IBM Rapid Restore PC" before the "Rescue and Recovery 4" installer removed it?
    4. Is there any space on the HPA I can recover?
    5. Is there a tool or method to delete the "Restore Your Backups" icon if it is non-functional?
This may all seem not that important but I do care about this awesome X31 and I really would like to know how all of these competing technologies interface with each other.
    Thanks for any help.,
    Charlie

    > ... it does not support X30 or X31, this could be part of the problem.
It also says that it *** may *** work on other systems. My experience is that if the IBM/Lenovo software supports the X32 (and RNR4 does), then it will work just fine on the X31 (example: Access Connections; exceptions: drivers that are specific to the very few hardware differences like CDC daughter cards -- Bluetooth).
The existing version was uninstalled and it was "way older" than what is covered in those special instructions (thanks, I did check it out -- no directory or utility present).
This is probably the end point for me -- good advice: "If that does not work, and if R&R under Windows works, you might create Recovery media and then boot from that if you want to restore from backups."
So, here is one new idea and one new confusion:
The last "official" RNR that supports the X31 was version 3.1 but it contains this somewhat cryptic (to me) caveat:
    Consideration 12
computers that have a hidden protected area (HPA), also referred
to as PARTIES, and have the Rescue and Recovery program installed
will not be able to boot into either the PARTIES or Rescue and
Recovery workspace after recovering the original factory contents.
To enable the PARTIES area again, restore a backup using either the
Rescue and Recovery program in the Windows environment or by booting
from rescue media and then uninstall the Rescue and Recovery program.
My thought: Should I uninstall RNR4, install RNR3.1, and then upgrade to RNR4?
My confusion: There are apparently two types of predesktop areas: HPA and Type 12.
Do RNR3 and RNR4 only use Type 12? If so, can it coexist with the HPA, can it replace the HPA on its own, or do RNR3 and RNR4 not install the Type 12 space nor update the HPA if the installer finds an intact HPA?
To recap, what I have now is an HPA as it would have existed in 2004. I have a working RNR4 in Windows. The Access IBM button and F11 boot to the HPA. What I would like is an RNR4 predesktop area that can do a factory restore.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Charlie
