Third-generation iPod appears in "My Computer" but not iTunes

I am sure this problem has been brought up many times before, but my iPod is not showing up in my iTunes but does appear in my My Computer folder. I have tried the troubleshooting options available on the Apple support page and have done other web searches for some help but nothing to avail. Can anyone help me?

hi haptic!
I had it all working fine until I formatted my pc. Now windows recognizes it but not iTunes or the updater, and I don't get any error message.
just checking. have you investigated these possibilities yet?
Strange iPod behavior when Windows confuses iPod with network drive
iPod for Windows: Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported
iPod not recognized and Windows Device Manager is empty
... another thing to check if your Device Manager is blank is this possibility:
No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It
otherwise, try steadily working through this document (apologies if you've seen this one already, but there are things in this one that you didn't explicitly mention having tried.)
EDIT: sorry, got the link wrong first time around ...

    Hello DomFC,
The following article provides some useful information and steps that can get iTunes to recognize your iPod again.

  • 5th generation ipod is recognized by computer but not by itunes.

Every time I try to sync, iTunes doesn't respond. I just get the spinning beach ball and I must force quit. The computer recognizes the ipod but not Itunes. Both work fine independent of each other.

Start with these articles and see if that gets you anywhere...

Also you might try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

  • Yet Another Faulty iPod Classic - Connects to "computer" but not iTunes

In Oct 2009, I purchased 160GB Classic and is now out of warranty so unable to replace, and i am not too keen on buying another one (NZD $470 RRP).
It had been working as per normal until Dec 2010 when I tried to sync the iPod on newly updated iTunes (10.1) then it started to freeze during sync and now, it doesn't sync any longer. It is howing as "connected" on the iPod and in "My Computer", but doesn't show up in iTunes at all.
iTunes also freezes (doesn't work whatsoever) while my iPod is plugged in to my computer. I have tried everything that the "Apple" help sites suggest (the 5 "R's", formatting, disk mode etc) you name it, but to no avail.
Trying to fix this problem is becoming frustrating and time consuming. My wifes iPhone 4 works perfectly so I know it's not the computer or iTunes itself. As I (had) trust in Apple products, I would expect this to last for more than 15 months.
I have no idea how this all came to be, and would just like it to work as normal again. What a way for Apple to earn its' "money"...
PLEASE, if ANYONE can help here, it would be very much appreciated.

I purchased 4 x iPod Classic 160gb units between July 2008 and March 2009 (and a 120gb Classic with which we have not had a problem). One unit worked for one day and had to be returned and was replaced with a new unit. The other three all failed within the 12 month warranty period and were replaced by Apple. Of the four replacements, three have now failed about 15 months after they were replaced. Of course the units are outside warranty (in particular due to Apple only offering the greater of 3 months warranty or the remainder of the original warranty). The units haven’t been subjected to any forceful knocks and as demonstrated by the lack of physical marks on the units.
To have 7 out of 8 units fail in this timeframe is in my opinion indicative of a fundamental flaw in the build quality or design of the units. After putting my case to Apple Australia I finally received a reply confirming that the units were out of warranty and nothing could/would be done - but they did offer a "thank you gift" of a credit of up to $125 at the Apple Store if I spent at least $425.
I replied that this wasn’t satisfactory but took up the credit whilst it was offered to at least get some discount off a new 160gb Classic (more reliable I am led to believe!). I am now out of pocket over $770 with replacement three units and still have one remaining unit that could die at any time.
Apple is no longer replying to my emails. If anyone with similar experiences would like to join together to put pressure on Apple to make good, or pursue other actions via consumer affairs, please reply on this forum.

"my dad pressed view and then he chose the 3rd picture thing and songs went into."
Sorry, I don't know what that means.
Have you had a chance to look through these?
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.

  • Ipod is seen by computer, but not itunes

My 40 gig ipod suddenly isn't seen by itunes, so I can't update my podcasts, music, etc. It shows up on my desktop though. My older 20 gig shows up and works fine. I just did the latest Itunes update hoping this would fix the problem, but it didn't. Apple are you listening, there are many who are having this same problem!

First, try resetting your iPod using the two button combination.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If you've already done that or it does not help, connect the iPod to your Mac. Run Disk Utility. The iPod should appear as a hard drive in the sidebar. Select it (the drive not the volume indented below) and go to the Erase tab. Note - Proceeding further will erase your iPod.
Volume format should be +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Name does not matter. Click the erase button.
If this completes successfully, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. iTunes will hopefully go through the initial setup screens. You should tell it NOT to sync and use the Restore button to put it back to original settings. Then you can sync it if you normally do so, or load it manually.
Apple are you listening, there are many who are having this same problem!
This is a user forum, but even if Apple was "listening," a 40GB iPod is a few generation removed from the currently in-production model...

  • IPod will connect to computer but not to iTunes (I followed the apple website guide already)

My iPod touch 4th gen WILL connect to my computer but not iTunes. I ran the diagnostics in iTunes and Apple mobile service is running, iTunes is updated and iTunes says everything is ok EXCEPT it says there is no iPod connected, but my computer says it is.
The apple diagnostic is located under the "Help" tab in the "Run Diagnostics" button.
Everything is a green light and is ready to go, except the last diagnostic which says that I do not have an iPod connected. The problem here is that I do, It is also a new iPod and when I plug it in I hear the computer beep that signifies that an external device has been connected.
My sister also has this problem connecting to the same computer (the only computer with this problem).

    Have you tried everything here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    including:

    or

  • "printer is offline" appears on one computer but not the other (both windows 7)

printer is offline" appears on one computer but not the other (both windows 7)

This is pretty common to see when your firewall kicks in and blocks certain communication paths the printer takes.
Here's a list of ports and programs that when allowed through the firewall, will restore communiction.
    Ports to open:
    UDP ports: 427, 161, 139
    TCP ports: 9200, 9220, 9290, 9500
    Programs to allow:
    hpiscnapp.exe
    hpoews01.exe
    hpofxm08.exe
    hposfx08.exe
    hposid01.exe
    hpqkygrp.exe
    hpqste08.exe
    hpqtra08.exe
    hpznui01.exe
    hpzwiz01.exe
SLP_Service (also known as UDP 427)
Have your security software provider walk you through allowing these items through your firewall.
If this does not fix your issue, it is most likely an issue with the driver configuration. Your router may have assisgned the printer a new IP address and this can be changed in the properties of the existing driver.

  • Can be seen in my computer but not itunes????!!!!

After i clicked "manually update checked songs bla bla bla"
and restarted the computer, my ipod shuffle only shows up in my computer but not itunes!!!
    can someone please help?
    THANKS!!!!!

Since you re-formate you computer your iPod will see it as a new computer.
First get iTunes to see your computer:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
After that you can move iTunes purchases, including your apps. to the "new" compouter by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
Also, you can always redownload apps at no additional cost:
How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store
If necessary you can transfer non-iTunes music to your computer by using one of the third-part programs discussed in in this previous discussion.
    Best iPod to PC
Make sure that the .xml folder/file is actually music and not just a listing of music Ican y place the songe in iTunes on the computer).
After you get everything in your iTunes library, restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and sync your stuff to the iPod.  You will lose your app date since you do not have a iPod backup file t restore from.
