Third Party MPEG2 encoder - Suggestions

So I recently upgraded to a new MacBook Pro. Everything's great except that the version of DVDSP 3 that I have won't work with it and neither will the version of Compressor that came along with it. (I upgraded from a G4 iMac.)
Can anyone suggest a good third party MPEG2 encoder? My budget is $100 - $200 (or less if possible). I just don't have enough control with the iDVD encoder (even with the new iLife '08). I'm not looking for anything real fancy, just something that will let me have a bit more control over the bitrate, etc . . . And, if it can handle DVD markers from FCE3.5 even better.
Many thanks for any thoughts.

Tom,
Thanks for your question. I didn't try because from what I've read on the forums DVDSP 3, the version that I have, is NOT universal. Not only that, it won't work with Intel Macs under Rosetta. Check the following URL for more information:
http://www.apple.com/rosetta/
"Pro applications from Apple — including Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Aperture, Logic Pro, Logic Express, Shake and Final Cut Express — are not supported by Rosetta. For most applications, you can upgrade to the Universal version for minimal cost (see “Apple Applications” to right)."
Does this sound correct to you? I'd love to keep DVDSP and Compressor, but it doesn't look possible. Are you using them with your Intel set up?
Many thanks for any thoughts.

  • Third party Firewire cards suggestions

I am not sure how Firewire works, but I am having some issues with Logic Pro and the only thing left to try is to reduce my Firewire traffic. Does anyone have a recommendation for a Firewire 800 and or a Firewire 400 add in card that my have individual ID handling of the ports and or a high performance IO card that can be used with Apple/Logic Pro?

    David,
does your G5 run PCI-x or PCI-e cards? If you're on PCI-x, then check out the Sonnet Tango 2.0 card. 2 FW400 and 2 USB 2.0 sockets externally and one of each (I think) internal - handy for dongles that you don't want to go for a walk...
I've got two of them in my G5 and they've been performing flawlessly with an Ensemble and a Canopus ADVC 110, both of which are twitchy if they have to share a FW bus with anything else. And with PCI-x being yesteryears technology, the Tango card is cheap as chips.

  • Suggestion for Apple or Third-party software company?

My first question is, where should I post the following suggestion for an improvement in FCP or for the creation of a third party software – suggested sites, blogs, etc.?
Next, my recommendation, and then my explanation of the reason why (including my personal semi-disaster):
Recommendation: That someone create a “Project Management” software for FCP (essentially a file management program that runs in the background) that organizes and tracks all of the files created during editing/post production – including the log/capture or log/transfer of the original footage, the audio files, stills, effects, etc, AND all of the files created by the program -- Live Type, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, and Color (especially color). The reason for this is that FCP has an incredibly complicated filing system that results in shots, files, documents, etc., being distributed all over the place – and not all known to the filmmaker or identified in the documentation. And, that condition can lead to disaster – see below.
Explanation: I just finished my first HD project using Studio 2, including sound track pro and color. After completing what I though was the absolute final version, I burned a one-off DVD and ran it by several filmmaker and non-film maker friends. They all spotted a small sound problem with one cut, so I went back to tweak it – and discovered that ALL of the footage had gone offline. I had nothing, nada, zilch. I had saved earlier sequences (rough cut, polished cut, etc.) and all the original footage appeared, but I had taken the final version into color for some corrections and adjustments, and ALL of those shots/files were missing.
After burning what I believed to be the final cut, I had cleaned up my hard disk, moving stuff to my backup hard disk, to my RAID array, and to the trash. So, after the initial shock and complete panic, several hours of searching all of these drives, led me to the file that contained the files that contained the color corrections – in my trash, which fortunately had not been emptied. I have no idea where the files were before or how they got into the trash – obviously they were not added to the scratch disk with all of the original footage.
Part of the difficulty of finding the shots was the discovery that color creates a file folder, that holds a set of file folders, each of which holds only one shot. In order to reconnect, I had to move the parent folder to the desktop, and then move all of the shots, one at a time. into a single folder, and then point reconnect to that folder. Problem solved.
However, now I face that question of archiving the project, moving all of the files off my hard drive so I can use the space for my next film, and I am terrified that I will leave something out, and not be able to recover the project in the future. Having a project management software that organizes and coordinates all of that would be a lifesaver – and well worth the purchase price.
Anyone who would like to explore this idea, please feel free to contact me – [email protected].

You've just learned a hard lesson. Put your current energy into your education, not finding a way to wallow in ignorance.
There already is a hardware device that will do what you want. It's called a "manual". In particular, the sections that relate to "where the program stores media". Pay very close attention to those sections and set up your computer so that all the scratch and storage pointers are aimed where you want. It's very simple to have them all go to one drive.
Then, when it's time to archive the project because you are starting a new project, just purchase another hard drive for the new project. They are absurdly inexpensive these days.
Remove the drive with your project to be archived from your computer (since you now know how to keep all the files organized, they will be all together) - and plug in a new disk for the next project.
If you want a backup, use carbon copy cloner to simply duplicate the drive (or simply just copy the relevant folders- you'll know which ones) to another drive (or get a RAID 1 device)
    good luck,
    x

How much of a hurry are you in, and are you considering upgrading to Lion?
File Vault on Snow Leopard only encrypts home folders you select, and doesn't work well with Time Machine.
But Lion will have "full disk encryption" of local or external disks.  See File Vault 2 here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

  • Third party encoding for use with iDVD?

    Hello All,
I have been doing a little bit of research on this, but I think I need some answers from more experienced users.
Are there any third party apps that do a better quality job of encoding video for use with iDVD? I edit my videos in Final Cut Express and then I import to iDVD and while the quality is OK I wonder if I can get it to look better ( I use SD footage and I encode in Professional Quality).
Has anyone here used a third party app that does a better job? (faster and/or better image quality)
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

Mike - Be sure and double-check over in the FCE forum to make sure you're using the best settings to make the jump from FCE to iDVD.
The Pro algorithm is supposed to be iDVD's best setting (for all production lengths), if you have a shorter production (under 60 min), try using Best Performance and see if that gives you anything better.

  • Best format to export in order to encode using a third party tool?

    Hello,
I am trying to export a movie I cut. I want to have a high quality uncompressed file that I can transcode using a third party app (which I've had better luck with than AME). So far I have tried AVI's with 100 quality, no compression, RLE, and they look terrible. FIle size is not an issue at this point. Its a 3 minute clip that looks horrible and blocky and 2 gigs large. Sorry I am still learning premiere.

Well I have been encoding clips for web since CS3. At the time I was trying
to encode h.264 mp4's or quicktimes from premiere or from after effects.
Perhaps I wasn't setting the encoding right but I was getting relatively
larg files and or disappointing quality encodes. I then learned to export a
quicktime with animation codec, at high quality, and transcode it using MPEG
streamclip or Handbrake. They did a superb job and I had an easier time and
a lot of control with the  h264 settings in these programs. It was just an
    extra step.
Now that I am on CS5, its actually the first time I use Adobe Media Encoder.
So perhaps it does a good job, and I just haven't figured it out yet. I am
testing out some settings at the moment, trying to find a similar
configuration from Handrake, to see how AME handles it, because if it works
    well it would be sweet.
Oh and I realized that to export clean AVI I needed to use microsoft
uncompressed AVI with uyuv. The other AVI settings looked horrible. Is that
    what people send to tape?
    Edit:
I have taken and transcoded an uncompressed AVI clip at 720x480 using AME's h264 and then taken the same clip into Handbrake to compare results. It was hard to assign similar H264 quality settings as the options in AME are very basic. You can basically choose Variable bit rate or Constant bit rate, and then ascribe a target bit rate. And that seems to be about it. In handbrake, the codec settings are much more granular. So I set off to create an encode that would have the same file size. Here are my results:
In AME I ended up with a 46 mb clip (it is over 3 minutes long) that looked pretty good. The render time was HALF of Handbrakes. With Handbrake, my clip was 45 mb, and it looked about the same as the AME clip, except that when there was a lot of fast movement on screen, the image quality was better, less blocky. While I really appreciate the speed from AME, the extra 2 minutes it took to transcode in Handbrake are worth the extra image quality and high end finish. It is hard to tweak the setting much more, in the absence of options inside of AME. Again, Handbrake is made to encode h264 from the ground up, and I also recognize that AME can be very useful in encoding other formats as well. Unless someone can show me otherwise, I think Handbrake will get you a better h264 encode than AME.

  • What format to export if using third-party encoder?

I've read the manual on this but I still don't think I've got a full grasp yet on exporting a reference movie. I wonder if someone can help enlighten me.
Does exporting a movie using the Using QuickTime Conversion... option, and then selecting an encoder (say, H.264) produce a "reference movie"? If so, then what's the diff. btw the above and using the export to QuickTime Movie... option (not self-contained)?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to determine what export format I should be using if I'm ultimately going to use a third-party encoder that's not listed in the FCE standard encoding options? (I.e., ON2 VP6 encoder to encode my movie to Flash.)
    Thanks in advance.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.16 GHz, 1.0 GB RAM, 100 GB HD, Panasonic AG-DVC30

    Thanks, Tom.
I'm almost there... you answered the first question and I think I can bridge it to the other.
Based on your post, I'm now clear on the Quicktime Conversion option as generating a self-contained movie file. Thanks.
On the second part, I'm using an On2 product that doesn't list in the format drop-down list. (Unless I'm missing it entirely.) I think the one you're referring to may be the On2 Flix Exporter package. However, I'm using On2 Flix Pro, which is a standalone. But, I'm now in danger of digressing from topic...
...Just to clarify my understanding, what I glean from your post is that if I were to use a third-party codec that doesn't appear in the drop-down format list, then I should:
    1. Export to QuickTime Movie;
    2. Un-check "self-contained" (thereby making it a reference movie);
    3. Then use the reference movie file as an entering parameter for the third-party codec.
    Right?

  • Suggested utility for SECURITY -using Photo Booth! Apple? Third Party?

(If this isn't the proper venue for suggestions, please forward this accordingly)
If anyone knows of some shareware/freeware/commercial ware out there that already does this, PLEASE share the info here.
Otherwise, code writers, PLEASE CONSIDER THIS IDEA FOR ENHANCED SECURITY. Password protection's fine, and, properly used, very effective for deterring casual snoopers. Still, existing Mac OS and equipment needs probably just a few lines of code to offer SUBSTANTIALLY improved evidence of who's been trying to peek into my files.
For all Macs with the built-in camera and Photo Book, consider this little trick:
Anytime a password-protected login screen comes up, Mac first opens Photo Booth (unannounced, completely unbeknownst to the user). If user enters a wrong password, FOOSH -- that white flash of the screen captures the would-be user's face looking directly into my screen. It repeats the process for every failed entry until an administrator-determined threshold says to shut down everything for an administrator-determined time frame.
Given the right password, or course, Photo Booth quits. This security utility comes back up anytime a password is required to gain access.
Further, as I remember from Kensington's Pass Proof program, OSX saves a journal entry (accessible only to Administrator) of "failed logon attempts" with that image, the time of day, and the wrong password (to help me get an idea of who's perhaps gotten an idea of what my password MAY be.) When it happens, Mac does NOT tell the uninvited guest. If he/she's no threat, fine, I just apprise the person of the proper logon. And if I find a photo of someone I really do NOT want anywhere near my stuff, I have PHOTO EVIDENCE of the attempted log on — and some insight into his/her knowledge of my passwords.
Seems like a fairly simple routine to program. Can't someone come up with this as a new security feature of OSX? Or maybe even a third party? I'd gladly pay $10 for shareware that gives me this definite, undeniable information.
    Thanks for listening.

  • Suggestion for Iridium I/O third party tool use in production environment. Is Good or bad to use?

    Hello Everyone,
we are planing to use Iridium I/O third party tool in one of our critical production environment to improve the performance.
but i want to know is it recommended  for such type of critical servers?.
if i use this tool find any performance improvement.

    Hi Baraiya,
Iridium I/O is certified by Microsoft. It can help to fix SQL Server performance instead of just pointing out performance problems . Benefits of using Iridium include the following aspects. Refer to:
    Iridium I/O for SQL Server.
    •Faster transactions
    •Faster batch jobs
    •Reduced blocking and deadlocking
    •Faster sorting in tempdb
•Speeds up queries from 3rd Party apps that can't be tuned
•Speeds up queries that are already "fully tuned"
•Speeds up the 95% of queries that the DBA never has time to tune
In addition, there will be no impact on the SQL databases when Iridium is removed. Personally, I recommend you install the Iridium I/O in a test environment, and check if it meets your requirement, then use it in the production server.
For more details , you can also review this blog:

  • Suggestions for third party plug-ins

I’m looking into purchasing some third party filters soon. I’m into special events like anniversaries, weddings, High School events like sports seasons, musicals, etc.
What are the third party plug-ins or filters that you would recommend?
    Hank Kearns

    For what purpose?
In other words, what effects are you trying to make?
I’m slowly learning more about Final Cut Pro and editing. I do not have any specific need right now. Perhaps I should have asked what are the effects that the more experienced users have found useful.
Here is an example of a effect produced by chv that was posted on Ken Stone’s Discussion List. The contributor I believe is the creator of the plug-in.
    <http://www.chv-plugins.com/tmp/Ken-3D-Cube-Demo.mov>
Right now I do not have a need for something like that, but it would be nice to have to potential of creating something like this when needed.

I just think folks found it such a broad, open ended question it is difficult to really say specifically.
For reading, depending on what your Dad likes to read, you have lots of options.  Many newspapers, magazines and news sites have specific apps for thier content, so you can search for ones that you know he reads.  You can install the iBook app, the Nook app both of which have their own stores to purchase from, but both also support non-DRM ePub formats like those from project Gutenberg, so you may be able to pre-load them with some free books he may like (or give him a Barnes&Noble or iTunes gift card to buy his first books).  There is a Kindle app too, if you do not mind being tied to the Kindle store only.
There are also some excellent crosswords apps if he likes those and I like the board games from Optime software (chess and checkers) but there are also apps for SmartGo, Mancala, Backgammon - just browse the section in the app store to see what catches your eye.
