Third party USB products and the Airport Extreme

If I hook up a USB splitter to my Western Digital hard drive, then plug one USB into my Airport extreme and the other in my XBOX 360 will my files on my hard drive become available wirelessly for use on my computer and also be available to be retrieved wired to my 360?

You do not want to do that. You can't connect two computers (the Xbox and AEBS) to the same USB bus. Not only won't it work but you may damage one or both (the Xbox and AEBS).

If I hook up a USB splitter to my Western Digital hard drive, then plug one USB into my Airport express and the other in my XBOX 360 will my files on my hard drive become available wirelessly for use on my computer and also be available to be retrieved wired to my 360?

No. The AirPort Express (AX) does not support USB hard drives.
The second thing is that you can't connect two computers (the Xbox and AX) to the same USB bus.

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

  • What's the most recent opinion about Time Machine backups to Hard Drives connected to the USB port on the Airport Extreme Base Station (5th generation)?

I have been searching the Apple communities and Internet for a final answer.  I just bought an Airport Extreme Base Station (5th generation) and LaCie d2 quadra 1TB external drive as a replacement for TWO failed Time Capsules, neither of which Apple would replace due to failed power supplies.  I formatted the 1TB drive using Disk Utility (Mac OS extended (journaled)) from my MacBook Pro, and then plugged into the Airport Extreme Base Station USB port.  The Airport Extreme Base Station see the Hard Drive, and my MacBook Pro sees the Hard Drive in my finder under shared resources.  Time Machine, however, does not see the drive.  Is there a solution for this problem?  If Time Machine will not work, is there another software product out there that will work, like Carbon Copy.  Having to plug the backup drive into the USB port of your laptop every evening kind of defeats the purpose of having a laptop.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Keeping in mind that this is not supported by Apple, I have been successful at doing the following:
    1) Format the entire drive (1 Partition) as Mac Extended (Journaled). You must click in Options and set it as a GUID Partition Table (first option)
    2) Plug drive via USB to AEBS
    3) Using Airport Utility, use Manual Setup, then under Disks, select the new Disk and click File Sharing, then Enable File Sharing and Secured Shared Disks (recommended, of course). Other settings are up to you.
    4) IMPORTANT: you will NOT see this Disk in Time Machine until you open Finder and double-click on it. You will not need to do this again (hopefully).
    5) Now it should appear in Time Machine. Remember to exclude any large files like Virtual Machines, since they will be re-backed-up (is that a word?) every time it changes in any way.
    6) Remember that the first backup (over WiFi) is the longest. Leave the computer alone during this period.
Good luck, and let us all know how it went for you!

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • Icannot get my pcs to see the external hard drive when I attatch it to the usb port of the airport extreme.  They do recognize a thumb drive but will not see the external hard drive.  What do I need to do.  The ext hard drive is a "MY PASSPORT" with no pw

I need assistance getting my windows computers to see my external harddrive attached to the airport extreme.  It is a my passport.  The disk shows on the airport utilitiy but neither of my pcs can see it.  If i connect a simple thumb dirve they see it just fine.
What do i need to do to get this to work.  There is no password on the external hard drive at the moment.  I tried removing it to see if that would work.

There are a number of posts related to access issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Is it possible to scan with an Multifunction Printer Epson Stylus 8300 series trough the USB port of the Airport Extreme?

I have an Epson Stylus 8300 series, and plugged in the USB output of my Airport Extreme, with that I can print without problems from any PC connected to my WiFi network, but can not in any way to scan photos and documents over the network , and every time I need to do this activity, I have to connect my printer directly to the computer. Could someone help me with this problem?

Sorry, but Epson and other manufacturers have not provided full featured drivers that would allow advanced features like copy, scan and maintenance to work when their devices are connected to the USB port on the AirPorts.
Only the print function will work when the All-in-One device is connected to the USB port on the AirPorts.
If you can connect the All-in-One using wireless only or Ethernet, most manufacturers have provided full functionality with these types of network connections.

  • I have installed Airport Extreme in my study where the Sky broadband hub lives.  The internet is great in the room where the hub and the Airport Extreme live, but when I go to another room in the house, the internet connection fails.  Help?

How can I increase the range of my Airport Extreme?  I don't live in a particular large house...I just want to be able to use the internet throughout my house.  I purchased the Airport Extreme on the understanding that I would be able to access the Wifi connection throughout the house.  Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong, if anything?

Are your walls made out of sheetrock by any chance?
You could purchase another apple router, and set one to EXTEND the other to increase your range.

  • Microsoft Spyware and the Airport Extreme

I think Microsoft is spying on me. I have had the weak sibling of Office, Office X for the Mac, installed on my family home computer for several years. Since it is a student edition, it may be installed on more than one computer under the license agreement. As you know, Macs let you transfer lots of stuff using migration assistant when you buy a new computer. We did this when my kids finally got their own laptops (MacBook Pros). They got Office on their computers from the family computer when they used migration assistant to transfer their stuff. Apparently, it must be a mirror image of the original install. While using Word, I was prevented from opening my file because it was installed on too many computers. At great risk, I chose to go to their website for "more information". I was directed to a solution for people who are using Office on their laptop and desktop and are connected over a network. My daughter had been running or using Word on her laptop at the same time as me. Sure, she could quit the program or I can turnoff the airport, but this type of spying by Microsoft seems to cross a line. Can my security be improved? We never had this problem before today. I also recently dropped my Dlink router for an Airport Extreme. Can the problem be solved through the Airport Utility program? I use WPA encryption, but this seems to be an issue hidden in a Office/Word preference or maybe a cookie?

I understand what you are saying as well as the first reply above. However, the license agreement for this version actually permits up to 4 users which we have not exceeded. The product key does not appear to be the cause of this problem. A user number is generated during the install that the user is advised to write down. I have had to reinstall this program previously on the same computer after a disk crash. Each install generates a number that changes even for subsequent installs on the same computer. When using migration assistant, the program was not installed anew. The function that checks probably cannot tell the difference between the computers only the install number generated. This should be fixable without reinstalling on the "cloned" computer. I do not authorize Microsoft to communicate over my private network.

  • Can I use a USB drive with the Airport extreme (not the new one) for Time Machine?

I thought I heard that using USB drive for Time Machine over wifi will work with the new, tall Airport Extreme, but not with the previous model, which I have. Anybody know for sure?
    thanks.

It is not recommended.. Apple says it doesn't work.. for some people it does for others it is unreliable.. do you really want unreliable backups.

  • Can I use an iPhone hotspot and the Airport Extreme's Wlan capabilities (excluding the internet function)?

Hi, I am trying to use my iPhone's hotspot for my internet connection and use my airport extrem just for the wlan capabilities. Every time I connect to the AE-Wlan I lose the internet connection from my iPhone. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When you say "wlan" are you trying to use your computer for internet sharing over wireless to other machines, and have your computer be the machine that routes the internet signal coming off the phone?
A better configuration would be to setup tethering of internet over Bluetooth for the phone, and then the computer can use its airport card to share the internet.
If you have an Airport Base Station, you can set it up to echo the WiFi signal being sent by the phone, and use the phone to share its internet over WiFi, using what is known as Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
Mind you internet on the phone being shared has its limits as your account probably is capped at how much data it can use in any one month.  Computers using phone internet use a lot of data.
If this is over your head, you may want to bring the phone, your computer, and your Airport base station to an authorized repair shop, or Apple usergroup meeting where someone can at least configure everything as needed to share with the rest of the computers in your home.

  • Usb drive on the airport extreme

Can the airport USB, be used with a thumbdrive, just wondering if you can store all the music on the USB drive and have all of the devices be able to read the USB and play the music from that instead of putting all of nthe songs on the device

You can use thumb drive.. it has to be formatted correctly.. fat32 or HFS+ of course.
And they are not very big.. so I am not sure how big your songs are.. in the apple world you have your songs on itunes and definitely this is unsuitable for the itunes library.. you still need itunes on a computer to share it to the network.

  • Can anyone clarify what exactly is the difference between the new Airport Express and the Airport Extreme?

The specs look virtually identical and the form factor is also much the same.
    The price is not.

Extreme: three LAN ports, Express: one (four total Ethernet ports vs. two, respectively)
Extreme: Gigabit Ethernet, Express: 10/100 base-T
Only the Express can stream iTunes (AirPlay) music
The first two limitations make it resemble the original AirPort Extreme. Dual band is a big plus though, and will go a long way toward alleviating a lot of people's problems with wireless interference.
The form factor is different as the new Express is not designed to be mounted directly to a power receptacle. Also, the new one allegedly supports 50 clients whereas the 802.11n Express was only 10. However, those never seemed to be limitations in actual use.
