Third-Party Wireless-G Adapter w/10.4.2?

Any good recommendations? As noted in a different thread I picked up a Belkin 7000, but I cannot get it to be recognized as an Airport card (Belkin says they do not support Tiger at all, but I've read reports from people who say they've gotten it to work).
I'm looking for a third-party card that costs less than an Airport Extreme (~$79) -- if the only ones that work cost $60+ I'd rather just buy an Airport card.
Of course, I'd rather take advantage of all the <$50 adapters on the market, it any of them will work with my beloved G4.
Thanks in advance for any leads!<br>
G4 933 (Quicksilver)   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Followup:
My card version is 3001, if that makes any difference. Not sure.
I downloaded the latest version of Airport for 10.4.2 (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42formacosx1042.html) and installed it, then installed the card. Nothing. The light on the back of the card does not come on (which does make me wonder if this unit is defective), and OS X does not see the card at all.

  • Third party Wireless Card on a Power Mac G5, bipro 1.8 GHz

Does anyone has a definite answer whether or not a TrendNet 403 PI+ PCI card would work or not along with my G5 bipro 1.8 Ghz (beginning 05- OS 10.3.9) ?
I have the same card installed on my B&W, which is recognized as an airport extreme card.
Installed into the G5, it is recognized by the hardware :
System Profiler says on Airport Card "Wireless Card Type : Third Party Wireless Card", but "Current Wireless Network : wireless network not available"
I have the 5 bars on airport icon, but they are grey
When I go to Other network and give the name of my network, it keep saying : "There was an error joining the Airport network".
Any clue why it works into my W&B (G4- 400 Mhz) and not into the G5 ?
    Thank's for any advice

  • Airport Extreme and third party wireless routers

I have a dual-band Airport Extreme that works well with all of my newer Macs. I have older laptops, however, with PCMCIA wireless cards that can't do WPA2-Personal security, only WEP. My only solution has been to set up a Guest network with no security. Is it possible to connect a third-party wireless router to the Airport Extreme that offers WEP security?

Are you trying to setup the Belkin router to use the same wireless network name as the AirPort Extreme network?
That would require that that the Belkin's network use the same security.
If this is the case, try setting up the Belkin with a different wireless network name. Unless the Belkin is really limited in features, you should be able to choose the type of wireless security to be used on this Belkin network.
If you can do this, "point" your WEP device at the wireless network that the Belkin is producing and the signal will bridge when it reaches the AirPort Extreme.
Regading your question about connecting a router to the ethernet port on a computer that is already setup for Internet Sharing...this is not likely to work. I very much doubt that you would be able to get an Internet connection with this type of setup.

  • Connecting ibook g4 with third-party wireless network

i've got a ibook g4 with an airport extreme card that i'm trying to connect to a third-party wireless network. When i am right beside the router, it works at about 75%, but I walk 15 feet away and the signal is totally gone. the computer the router is hooked up to is a PC, and so are the other three computers in the house that access the wireless network. The PC's are all further away from the router, yet they can still get a basic signal. Why is my mac not working with this and what can i do about it?
    router: d-link 802.11g/2.4Ghz
    my ibook: g4, 14", superdrive

You can verify that the antenna wire is properly attached to the AirPort Extreme card. See the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.

  • Help With Third Party Wireless Cards

Hello, I am needing some help with third party wireless cards. I have purchased and installed the Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card into my G4. From what ive seen on the discussions page here, this card is known to work with the G4s in place of the more expensive Airport Extreme card. The only problem is that my G4 doesnt even recognize that the card is in the PCI slot. Ive tryed the other PCI slots and still nothing. Previously, i have tried using a belkin and a d-link card that have been known to work in the G4s as well, and had the same problem. I am 100% sure that the card is seated correctly, and cant think of any other reason why it shouldnt detect that something is in the slot. If anyone can inform me what im doing wrong, or has any info on how to get it working, that would be great. Thanks for your time,

Yes, i run Digidesigns audio editing program called Protools on my Mac. It uses a PCI card to import mic/line audio signals into the program from the hardware interface. I tried moving the Digidesign card and putting the wireless card in the same slot, and still nothing, although the Digidesign card works fine in the other slots. Each time i moved the Digidesign card, it showed up in the different slots, although the ones that were open did not show up at all. Only the PCI slots that are in use show up in ASP on my machine. I have the FW-800 version of the G4, so im not sure if that makes any difference. I have never erased the PRAM before, would you be able to give me directions on how to do that? Thanks a ton for your help. =)

  • Third Party Wireless

    Hullo all,
Is there any way to connect a third party wireless device to a mac? Specifically I am talking about a MacMini G4 (bought june/july of 2005) using a Ashton Digital AirDash USB stick. I can plug it into my mini and it lights up but I am not sure how to make the mini utilize it. I have tried the IOExperts Drivers to no avail. I know the stick can be used my the mini (using KisMac) but I do not know how to use it to connect to the internet.
    Thanks for any help
    Tom Johnson

Alternitavely, you said that it works
with KisMAC, so you could try and find out what
driver KisMAC is using to make the card work and
    apply that driver.
This idea seems to be the best or rather the only one that will work, unfortunately I have absolutely no idea as to how to do it. KisMAC uses the USB PRISM II driver and only in passive mode. (I am not sure if that makes a big difference) Anyway I have no idea where OS X puts its drivers. I've looked in the console application and it calls the drivers USBIntersilJack and specifically uses the lines:
2007-03-11 23:29:01.966 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack is now ready to start working.
    2007-03-11 23:29:02.307 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack: Detected a Prism2 card
    2007-03-11 23:29:02.345 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack: Firmware vendor 31, variant 6, version 1.5
    2007-03-11 23:29:02.346 KisMAC[336] USBIntersilJack: MAC 0x0 0xa 0xe9 0xa 0x81 0x79
    when it is loading.
You need to find a Mac Compatible driver. If there is
one for the usb stick, it will probably be on the
    Ashton website.
As for finding a mac compatible driver i think chances are nil. I've tried everything from open source to the DLink 1.47 driver. Either they do not work or I am to noobish in this area to know how to get them to work properly.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

  • Connect AE to third party wireless router

    Hi all,
Here's what I'm trying to do:
I have a Airport Extreme base that I want to connect to a non Apple wireless router (ISP wireless router). Anybody managed to do that?
I tried setting up the base as WDS connnecting to my third party wireless router but without any success. I can make all the connections, save my AE settings, but when I choose the newly set AE Base, I'm not connected.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    g

Most likely not, as very few non-AirPort routers can be extended with the AirPorts in a WDS. (ref: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=WDSLinked_routernetwork)
You can, however, connect the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to most non-AirPort routers, via Ethernet, and then set up the AEBS as a bridge.

  • Configuration of AirPort Extreme Using Third Party LAN Ethernet Adapter?

    Hello;
I am trying to set up my own wireless connection, not without great consternation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is my current situation:
Subscribed to DSL service - installation went well, and it works fine on two other computers (that are not wireless). Installed same in computer that will use airport extreme, and it shows a connection, but won't load the browser pages.
Airport Extreme Base Station is working, software installed, etc., but computer doesn't offer airport as a connection choice in system preferences, internet connect, Airport set-up assistant, etc. (because there's no airport card installed????). Consequently, I can't finish w/airport set-up assistant.
I'm using a third party LAN ethernet wireless adapter since I was told airport cards for my G-4 are no longer made. Adapter and software installed, and shown to be working.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks

  • Third party 802.11n adapter for iBook G4

Does anyone know of any third party adapters that will work with the Airport Extreme/Time Capsule and can be controlled using the Airport drop-down menu in the main menu bar?
    Thanks

Alright, does anyone know of any good 802.11n adapters that at least work with the the Airport Extreme? I've checked out the QuickerTek products that claim to be compatible with the AEBS, but is there anything less expensive? There cheapest one is $90.

  • Airport with third party wireless router?

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers? I have Verizon FIOS and would like to use my Airport Extreme base station and Airport Express unit on my home network. I have successfully set up Airport Express in my office as a WDS. Can Airport Extreme base station be set up as part of a WDS?
    Thanks for any insights.

Will Airport Extreme units play well with third party routers?
No industry-wide standard exists for WDS, so it is impossible to predict how Apple's implementation of it (or anyone else's for that matter) will interface with other equipment.
Wikipedia has a short but fairly comprehensive list of third party equipment that allegedly support WDS. Missing from the list is a Linksys access point, which I nonetheless successfully configured as a WDS remote station. They call it "repeater mode".
    Yes Verizon FiOS is absent.

  • Third party wireless card problem

I installed a Sitecom WL-171 Wireless Network PCI Card (http://sitecom.com/drivers_result.php?groupid=5&productid=525) and appropriate driver.
I ran the set-up and the card was found and then connected to my WDS network via its own utility program.
The problem is the G4 doesn't seem to recognize this network connection.
I phoned Sitecom who said to change PCI slots which I did but didn't help and Apple want to charge me £35 with no guarantee of a fix!
Is there a simple way to manually configure network connections so the G4 reocognizes the card?

Eventually solved by copying Ethernet ip settings when it was hardwired to router into the PCI Slot 3 settings where the card is housed

  • Third party wireless routers incompatible with PowerBook airport

Hello there. I'm not having success with my problem so I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about incompatible wireless routers. In Mac help under Airport there is a curious statement that some hardware may be incompatible with Airport. As I travel through Chile, I have encountered several public Wi Fi hotspots to which I am unable to connect. I have all the TCP/IP settings entered correctly (IP address, router address, DNS, sub-net mask, everything) yet still unable to connect, including the Wi Fi at my hotel. They have provided me with all the necessary information, entered in the TCP/IP tab in the Network prefs pane, yet still unable to connect. DHCP this is not. I have never encountered this anywhere. I suspect the wireless hardware they use will not communicate with an Apple product. Could this be true? Has anyone run into this?
    Thank you,
    Michael

Thanks for your help. I tried all the encryption methods using the password given to me by the hotel and the coffee shops. Wi Fi appeared to be a complete mystery to them, although they seemed to have enough of a clue to suspect the encryption to be WEP. (Wi Fi has only recently arrived to Punta Arenas). I tried all the WEP and LEAP and any WPA, although some of the WPA methods wouldn't accept the password (the "OK" button was grayed out). It's got me stumped.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Recommendation for third party wireless card

I have a client with a dual-core G5. They didn't purchase it with Airport but now they want wireless access.
Unfortunately it looks like you can't install a Extreme card after the fact as you could with the previous PowerMacs. They would have to bring the Mac into an authorized service center to have them install it.
Does anyone know of a PCI based solution? Am I going to have a problem since it uses PCI-express?
    Thanks,
    Mitch
    Dual-Core PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The link pulls up a 404 page...drats. When going through the front door on Virgin site, I found their Broadband2Go, but it’s not Mac compatible. Only PC (drats again).
Like the OP, I’d love to find a “pay as you go” broadband solution for the MBP. I travel quite a bit for work, and most of the time can wrap the hotel’s internet charge into the client contract. Still, there are times the trips are on my dime, so it would be great to have a PAYG solution.

  • AirTunes through existing third-party wireless network

    Hello everyone,
I am thinking about purchasing an Airport Express mostly to use AirTunes.
The room where the AE would stay in is already well covered by two wireless devices (a D-Link wireless access point and a Netgear DSL router with a wireless access point built-in), so I'd rather not pull an ethernet cable to the AE.
The simple question is: does the AE have any option to connect to an existing wireless network? I don't need it to act as a repeater, it should just access the pre-existing wireless network as a "client" in order to be seen by iTunes.
    Is this possible at all?
    Thank you very much!

The simple question is: does the AE have any option to connect to an existing wireless network?
Yes, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can be reconfigured to "join an existing wireless network." In this configuration, is performs like any other wireless client to that existing wireless network so you can use it to share a USB printer or for iTunes streaming.
(ref: AirPort Utility > select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network)
