This black box is making noise--what is it? (pictures)

I know there have been several threads regarding the white noise given off by Motherboards under heavy load.  I also have a K7N2G-ILSR and it has made the noise since day one.  Like others, I have tracked the noise to the little black box just above the mosfets near the CPU.
When I press on it, the pitch of the noise varies.  Ideally, I would like to strip the tape from around the box and hot-glue the entire thing, but I want to make sure it won't hose everything. I don't care about the warranty, but if I can't make the sound stop, I'm liable to kill someone.
I would like to know what the black box does and if anyone has any luck silencing the sound!
Thanks!

In this case it stores energy and timely releases it, In MSI's words, this is normal, as the environment is high frequency.
To elaborate further on what I said before, what's likely happening is some of the components or that choke may be at the bottom or top of the allowable tolerance for manufacture. All electronics are not EXACTLY the same as far as components go. This is what's referred to as "parametric differences." You have the PCB, (printed circuitboard) CPU, RAM, peripherals, power supply, and, add to that, all the components that populate a PCB. A PCB is used on your VGA card, RAM, power supply, and ALL of your peripherals. All of these parts are manufactured with allowable tolerances, same goes for the PCB. Get the idea? See how this becomes an environment where things can easily get out of hand? Couple that with the fact of how many possible configurations can take place, and also that many of the componets and parts are manufactured by many different vendors.
Take a circuit board for example, you have multiple layers, dielectric in between those layers, the foil or copper layers in the internals are a set weight or thickness but the outer layers are usually plated up and/or etched down (this can include the internals). The etch process is done with acid, and you get a minute bit of what's called "etch down" where if you were to look at a cross section of a routed trace, you would notice that there is a slight "V" shape since the acid will etch around the sides. The board vendor must compensate for the etch down by enlarging the original artwork. However, it will NEVER be exact every time. The general specs for most of the boards we produce are +/- 20% of the original artwork supplied in the design data. That is, if you have an .008 thousandths trace, we can be within .0016 of the original.
Granted some tolerances are tighter when manufacturing high speed and impedance controlled designs, but you get the idea.
Now, you have basically the same scenario when it comes to components as mentioned previously. That is why you see users reporting strange behavior, mind you, it's a small percentage, but it is generally exacerbated when multiple parts, components, and peripherals operate in a high speed, high frequency environment like today's performance PC's. It only takes a few things to be at the top or the bottom of a tolerance to create this anomaly, or another issue altogether.
This is what I know personally through my experience as a PCB designer and manufacturer, and then being in the electronics and IT industry, and of course, an enthusiast

  • Why am I getting a black box in the corner of my screen saying in part, GCLI is an experiment to create a highly usable----?

This black box appears every time I start Firefox for the last several days. If I click on a blank spot, it disappears. It is annoying to say the least.

Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type '''''about:config'''''.
If a warning screen comes up, press the '''''Be Careful''''' button.
This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run.
At the top of the screen is a search bar. Enter '''''browser.newtab.url'''''
    and press enter. '''''browser.newtab.url'''''
tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened.
    If you want, right click and select '''''Modify'''''. You can change the setting to;
    '''about:home''' (Firefox default home page),
'''about:newtab''' (shows the sites most visited),
    '''about:blank''' (a blank page),
or you can enter any '''web page''' or '''about: page''' you want.
The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as
    '''''browser.startup.homepage'''''.

  • Anyone else have the black box of death with codes on your screen? (DVR)

I've manually reset and still get this black box with codes on my TV sceen. It blocks out 90% of the screen.  I've also tried the online reset and they "cannot process" my request at this time!   The code is <00815BAC> [DCE2].  It's definitely DVR-related - my non-DVR TVs work fine.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem is?  (thanks)

    Hello,
First, make sure that you have the latest Firmware updates installed. Refer to the article at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
This will list all the available firmware updates for each machine.
If you already have the latest firmware update installed, and are still having this problem, then I would suspect bad memory first.
Try removing any expanded memory you have installed (leaving the factory memory installed) and see what happens.
There were a lot of marginal memory modules sold before OS X was released.
Many of these modules would work perfectly fine, and then fail completely once you installed (or tried to install) OS X 10.0
This was a huge issue back then. Many people discovered that their memory modules were just slightly out of spec, and needed to be replaced with proper modules that were produced exactly to spec.
Perhaps this is what is going on with your system.
Since you have been using 9.2 on that machine, your expanded memory (if you have any) may be slightly out of spec, but was not noticed by OS 9.2.
    Hope this helps.

  • Black Box on starting page.

    Hello,
I really had a strange problem. Every time that I start up my iMac, in the starting page (or Welcome page - where it is shown the users) thare is a black box writing everywhere that the cursor goes, and a "man" is talking where I am, but what is strange is that my VoiceOver are off, the VoiceOver cursor are off, capition panel are off and speakable items are off. So how is it still working on the starting page (Welcome page)?
Please!! Somebody help me!! I'm getting crazy with this black box, and I'm new in these iMac stuff!!
Thank you for who reads and tried help!
    Somel

Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups. Click the Login Options item at the bottom of the left pane. In that screen, towards the bottom of the choices, is an item named "Use VoiceOver in the login window" - if that is checked, uncheck it.
You'll probably need to unlock that window to make such a change.

  • Black box (line) surrounds and follows mouse, 'mini' screen size, PIP?

    Hi,
I just tried to install the new wireless mighty mouse and wireless apple keyboard.
The mouse worked for a minute, but the install of the keyboard killed the BT mouse and now there's this ANNOYING black box around the mouse cursor.
After playing with it I've noticed that the pointer cursor, which is surrounded by this box (4:3 ratio box, approx 2" wide by 1.5" tall on my 20" 1600x1200 monitor).
The odd thing is the cursor's position within this box moves in correlation with where on my overall desktop the cursor is placed: If I put my cursor in the upper right corner of my whole screen, the mouse cursor is also in the upper right corner of the small 'box'; if I move it to the lower left of the screen, it is also in the lower left of the box, and so on for the other two corners, and if it's in the middle of the screen, it's in the middel of the little black box.
    So this seems very strange.
Oh, and neither the BT keyboards or the new mighty mouse BT will show up in the BT menu as recognized devices, though they did just briefly in the beginning.
So after buying a new USB hub to be able to plug in the Apple/Belkin USB hub along with the Apple store's D-Link USB Bluetooth adapter and a new BT keyboard and mouse - $200 for a wireless keyboard and mouse, all I have is ultra annoying new software problems and all the same wires as before, with an additional keyboard and mouse on my desk. UGH!!!
Can anyone help with this 'black box around the keyboard issue, at least?
Thank you soo, so much for any solutions!
    Sarge
Oh and this weren't enough my barely used video ipod video 60 GB self-distructed this AM - melted inside somehow. I am in Apple ****.

    GREEN STAR FOR YOU!
Of all the things - somehow, and I've never even been into this control panel, inside the Universal Access/Seeing/Options dialogue, the box was checked saying "Show preview rectangle when zoomed out".
I unchecked this, and it went away. I had not selected this, ever. How it happened, I don't know except that I do have a Logitech NuLOOQ tooldial device which I had unplugged from USB while troubleshooting my BT wireless keyboard and mouse, and this device requires having the 'enable access for assistive devices' checked in the Universal Access control panel.
Perhaps unplugging that device somehow lead to this problem, but otherwise I've never 'visited' the UA pref panel or checked anything in it.
Odd, but THANK YOU for the suggestion!!!

  • Pictures printing within a Black Box from a CP1518ni

I have an HP CP1518ni Color LaserJet and while printing sell sheets that contain a lot of graphics, the product pictures are appearing within a Black Box (the normal format has the picture printing with a darkened area, but the problem is that product pictures are appearing within a second layer, black box.)    On my computer screen, this black box is not there and when i print on my inkjet, the picture print correctly.  i spoke with the creator of the sell sheets and it appears that it is a printer issue as opposed to an artwork issue.
I tried printing from a different computer and the problem still exists.  I have also updated the drivers from the website and the issue still exists.  This is not happening on just one sell sheet, it is appearing on every sell sheet that uses the same format.
Confused, frustrated and wasting expensive toner and paper...anyone have any suggestions??  Thanks!

i just bought the same printer.. and had same problem..
when you go to print... look left.. and see that you are printing "full page fax print"... it produces the black border..
choose full page  photo print...right below that...
    problem solved...
    hope it helps..

  • Can't fix black box on dock app with evilwm

I'm currently running evilwm and trying to get a dock app to work with it. Right now I am stuck with a black box on the bottom 1/5th of the screen where the dock application is located.
I have tried the following combinations, to no avail:
    xcompmgr + cairo-dock
    xcompmgr + docky
    cairo-compmgr + docky
I have managed to get the dock to work in each combination, and the visual effects from the composite managers are working, but I can't get any of them to remove this black box.
I tried cairo-dock with both OpenGL and Cairo arguments, and neither worked. I'm confident that my drivers are functional, because I've been running TF2 with no issues.
I suspect that there are some compatibility issues where transparent backgrounds are not supported by evilwm, or some such, but for all my searching I can't find any documentation of this. I also cannot find any instances of people with this same issue.
    Any ideas?

Oh. That is quite a different matter. An MMS message requires a download of data, which cannot be done while on a call. SMS, yes, data no unless your device has WiFi, which the 8330 does not.
Your earlier post stated you could receive a "txt", which is SMS.

  • How can I stop the black box appearing round a movie?

So I've created a PDF with quicktime movies embedded in it on indesign, and I've taken the black outline off and have the movie automatically playing when you open the page. The problem is when it plays another black box appears round the movie and you have to click off it to make it disappear - it looks unprofessional and if you're in full screen mode this makes it turn to the next page, and we don't want that, do we.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this black box so that it stays without a border when it's playing? I guess it happens because the movie is selected, but I can't seem to find anywhere in the edit movie dialogue box that says anything about it.
    Thanks.

Thanks Steve, we'll look into buying Acrobat X because it would look so much better.
One question though - If I was to sort out the settings on Acrobat X, would the black box still appear when viewed on Acrobat 8?

  • Help! I can't get rid of this little black box!

I ordered DSL service and tried to hook it up the other day, unsuccessfully. In the instructions it says that if you have problems to insert the disk provided. I told the lady I ordered from that I had a Mac and she said it would be no problem, but of course no where does it say that this disk is not usable on a Mac.
You get where this is going I'm sure, I put it in and followed what it said, including restarting the iMac as instructed. After the restart it will do the "bong" sound and I get the initial white screen with the grey apple, but I never get the little grey lines in a wheel shape. After a couple of minutes I get a litte black box about 2" wide and 1/4" tall across the top of the apple with little colored lines in it, and nothing else happens or works. I can't even get the disk drive to open or close without holding the button on the back, turning it off, and then holding the open button while I turn it back on with the button.
I have restarted using the hardware repair disk, all is fine. I restarted using Disk Warrier, all repaired, but still not working. I restarted using the 10.2 install disk and verified and repaired the disk and permissions, several were repaired, but still the black box. I tried holding the shift key at restart and still the box, and also tried holding the control and "s" key with no luck.
Of course AT&T knows nothing about the Mac and after talking for 1.5 hours to 5 different people and having a tech guy come and not know anything to help they tell me I have to call Apple to pay for help. I am so frustrated!!! Is there anyone out there with suggestions before I call and pay?
    Many thanks,
    Cassie

    Hi Cassie:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I have not used OS X 10.2.x for a long time, but I think you should consider and archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
An A&I will install a fresh OS X - hopefully eliminating whatever happened with the AT&T disk. You would, of course, have to update OS X to current levels for 10.2.
    Barry
P.S. It also occurred to me that AT&T does not support OS X 10.2 - you might ask them that question.

Looks like a bug somewhere in PS - would be interesting to find out if it's happening to more than just us.
Actually this looks a lot like a bug with a GPU driver.
Has the issue reoccurred since you turned off GPU usage?
My trouble is I just use PS and expect it to work.
Well, as Adobe did not make your computer, OS, GPU, … you have to do your own trouble-shooting to verify if the issue is actually with an Adobe application or with another component.
