I'm trying to sync my iphone 4 to my computer because i have no room and need to get rid of some songs, and the following message shows up:
"This device cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started"
My iphone hasn't been updated since before the whole os5 updates, and now I cant even get it to sync. can anyone help?

On my registered iTunes computer, the following message appears every time one plugs in a device and refuses to load said device to be synced: "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". Each device has been registered onto this account and this computer, and all have worked finely in the past. I am so confused as to why now seemingly without reason, none of our apple devices (one iPod, two iPhones) are allowed to have music and other material downloaded onto them. Also, as a side note, they still are charged by plugging them into the computer, however they do not even show up on the left-hand sidebar in iTunes.
It should also be noted that for my iPhone it does not allow for the new update software to be uploaded; it just says that an error has occurred, nothing more.

I am trying to synch my iphone but when i tunes starts it doesnt display the device in the left hand column and a box comes up saying "This iphone cannot be use because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started" I have synched this phone many times

I had this problem before. I like to disable extra services to speed up my computer and I disabled the Apple Mobile Device service and had to re-enable this.
You can do that by going Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. Once you have gone to the services window, look for Apple Mobile Device and right-click. Select "Properties". There should be some information about the service as well as the label "Startup Type" with a drop-down menu beside it. If it says "disabled", that is your problem; Change the selection to anything except disabled (Automatic is easier and ensures that you can sync as soon as itunes opens).
If this doesn't work, I would look into your anti-virus' settings. Good Luck!

I had upgraded my ITUNES and after two attempts to update to IOS 5 (it timed out each time), I am now getting the message above. everything seems to be working.
