This disk is locked

I need install Mac OS X Lion my Mac Pro, but error like "This Disk Is locked" please hel me

Same problem on a 2009 MacBook. First it was overheating (at about 14 min) stoping and restarting installation in various times before completition, then I followed the instructions to create a boot drive to install Mountain Lion but when trying to install from there it reports that the disc is locked. I just spend a day trying and trying to figure out what to do.
Apple I'm very dissapointed!

Launch the Terminal app, copy & paste this command into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. At the Password: prompt, carefully enter your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key.
    sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/
Then, copy & paste these next two, one at time, into the window and hit the return key after each:
    sudo chmod a+rx /Volumes/*
    killall Finder
Quit the Terminal app and try installing again.

  • Stuck in Lion installation *LIMBO* - disk damaged, disk wont repair, disk is locked, wont revert back to snow leopard

I'm stuck in Limbo.  I cant complete the install and cant revert back to snow leopard.  All I have are the installer utilites (including safari).
I'm running a summer 2009 release macbook pro 17 inch.  I downloaded the Lion install app and proceeded to follow the instructions and guided.  After less than a minute the install stopped to say that it could not be completed because the hard disk is damaged and can’t be repaired.
So...I went to disc utility to verify the disk and this is what I got.
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking file systemPerforming live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
Incorrect number of file hard links
    Bad hard link creation date
(It should be 3325742596 instead of 3340504404)
Hard link record has data extents (id = 2888169)
    Checking multi-linked files.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
So I put in my Snow Leopard disk and went to repair disk.  Now, THIS is what I got.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
So then I wanted to go back to Snow Leopard at least, but I cant.  When I go to “Startup Disk” and select my Mac 10.6.8 drive, it says:
You can’t change the startup disk from the selected disk.
Startup Disk could not gather enough information on Selected Disk.
So that’s annoying because it keeps me stuck in that installation "limbo" - not able to finish installing and not able to go back.
I restarted, holding down the OPTION key, but it only gave me one boot selection - the installer itself.
So then I try yet again to install this thing because there’s not much else I can do...but now it won’t even start installing...when the installer screen asks which drive I want to install it on, for which I would of course choose my Macintosh HD, it says in subscript underneath Macintosh HD:
“This disk is locked”  and it wont let me select the “continue” button to begin the installation.
    Please help, someone.

phew, just got everything back to "normal"
I turned off my mac for about 10 minutes and then started it up again.  Also I think this time i inserted my snow leopard disc at just the right time, not too early not too late.
Whatever it was, when i went to "Startup Disk" the snow leopard disc showed up!
So then I went to disk utility after booting the snow leopard installer for the first time.  It said it repaired one thing but then stopped and said it couldnt repair it and told me to back up and reformat.
Then I just ran a simple verify again and it said the HD was "OK" - it gave me a clean bill of health?!?!
So then I went to startup disk again, and was finally able to get out of limbo and back to good old snow leopard.
Now I'll install Lion, but taking all cautions beforehand...maybe i'll wait a few days first though.
    Thanks to everyone.

  • The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disk is locked and cannot be written

I am having a problem burning CDs. iTunes begins to burn CD than cancels with the following message "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The disk is locked and cannot be written." After some research I found the following article "Burning disc in iTunes for Windows using a Sony CD-RW/DVD CRX830E model drive fails with 4280 error." I followed directions as noted, this worked for the burning of one CD, then failed message returned. I have tried different CDs and lowering record speed to no avail. • Error message "disk is locked" when inserting blank DVD

My G4 is supposed to be able to burn a DVD, but when I insert the sample DVD that came with the computer when it was new, I keep getting the "disk is locked" message. It also happens with other DVD's that I bought specifically to use with the G4. I would appreciate your suggestions.

Any optical drive software that is worth its salt should enable burning of data discs (4.7GB or 8.5GB in the case of DVDs) as well as of specialized file formats. That said, however, one of the commonest reasons for failure to burn, even failure to recognize an optical drive, is extension conflict. This was especially true of Roxio's Toast v5.x, when using which it was necessary to disable all Apple extensions, USB and FireWire, so that control of the drive could be taken by Toast extensions. I had to do this only recently to get a friend's LaCie DVD-R burner to be recognized as a DVD (rather than CD) burner by a B&W under OS 9.2.2, let alone to burn DVDs. That possibility was the reason for asking about your software. However, if you are using only Apple software, there should be no issue of software conflicts of this nature.
Without wishing or intending to fob you off, I suggest that you will get much more up-to-the-moment guidance from active fellow-sufferers than is likely in this antediluvian category if you approach them in the iDVD specialist forums, which are divided into iDVD 6, 5, and 4 and under.

  • I am unable to erase hard drive after a crash, also cannot reinstall Lion because disk is locked.  There seems to be nothing else to do, suggestions?  Where do I go from here?

I downloaded Lion 100 days ago (conveniently after the 90 day tech support)  now my HDD has crashed and it gets stuck at the apple screen.  I then hold command R and go to disc utility try to repair, that doesn't work, and try to erase.  But it says error, cannot unmount disk.  I then try to reload Lion, but it says the disk is locked.  Okay, so do I need a new hard drive?  If so that's fine, I just cannot seem to erase this drive to reinstall lion.  Also, I don't have a disk to reinstall OSx, as Lion is done via internet.

Wow, thanks.  It did the trick.  So now I am confused, do you think I still need to take in my Mac to see if there are some problems with the hard drive, or do you think I'm in the clear.  I was going to get a new hard drive installed, because I thought that was the issue seeing as I couldn't access it during safe mode.

  • Downloaded Mountain Lion from App Store, but it says by disk is locked and won't let me choose the hard drive for installation

I'm struggling to get Mountain Lion installed on my machine, but what is worse is that it has essentially rendered my computer useless (and of course I need to use it urgently). After downloading and installing from the App Store, I have run into some significant problems.
On install, when prompted to "select the disk where you want to install OS X" the hard drive is greyed out and a message comes up that says "The disk is locked."
So when I back out of the install, I am given the option for Disk Utility, Reinstall OS X (same results as before)  or Restore from Backup (not backed up).
On the Disk Utility, I can hit Verify Disk and it names an error and says to hit Repair Disk. The error is an "Invalid Sibling Link. The volume Macintost HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired." Unfortunately, Repair Disk is greyed out and I can't hit it.
What I want to do is just forget the entire process at this point and scrap the upgrade until I have time to figure out what is going on. Is there a way to abort at this point?
    Thanks for any help!

    Your welcome!
You should always have and keep an up to date backup.
Sounds like you need something a little stronger than Disk Utility. At this point I have no way of knowing if Disk Warrior can or will help.
    Depends..!
If you do format and install, then Yes it will.
If you reinstall OS X, then No it will not.
Problem is that according to the Disk Utility message, I don't think that you will be able to install either 10.6 or 10.8.
Those are very good questions. The only bad questions are the ones you have to ask yourself.

  • "The iPod '...' cannot be synced. The disk is locked and cannot be written to."

    Hello.
I keep getting this "The iPod '...' cannot be synced. The disk is locked and cannot be written to." error when I try to sync my 11 GB of music from my very old, updated Windows XP Pro SP3 machine to an old iPod Touch 1G (iOS v3.1.3). It has a brand new (lat/new)est iTunes installation too. I tried rebooting the the machine, disconnecting USB cables, etc. None of them helped. I did not have this problem in the end of 2013. Is my iPod Touch 1G dying?
    Thank you in advance.

I did a reset since I had to restore v3.1.3 firmware and reconfigure from a Mac OS X 10.5.8 MBP before I ran into problems. Isn't that enough? Or do I have to do it again? Also, these were brand new installations and setups for iTunes and iPod Touch 1G. So, I am doing everything from scratch.
I also found out that iTunes wants full (not read) access to my shared medias in my very old, updated Windows XP Pro SP3 machine. When I gave them full access, then I got farther, but it still failed later on (almost half way since 5 out of 11 GB according to math with disk spaces on both iTunes and iOS v3.1.3?) I didn't use Mac OS X 10.5.8's iTunes (only kept it for whited00r firmware part) for syncing since all my media is on the other machine.

  • ITunes claims that iPod disk is "Locked"

Ok i really need help, i have an ipod mini, and a 5th gen video, and when i try to sync/copy files to either, itunes gives me an error saying "Attempting to copy to the disk "(my ipods name)" failed. The disk is locked and cannot be written to." i recently restored my ipod mini thinking that would fix the problem, but it didn't, and now i have 450$ worth of doorstops.
    --geekspence--
BTW, the ipods both appear in windows

UPDATE!! This turned out to not be a problem with itunes, but a problem with a windows registry file... if anyone ever has this problem, run regedit, and When you have done that, you can reset your USB cache file. Set your Folder
Options to view hidden files, and delete the file:
    C:\WINDOWS\inf\infcache.1
You will probably have to 'take ownership' of the file to delete it
There is a registry setting to write protect a usb port.
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
    Control\StorageDevicePolicies.
    'WriteProtect' should be deleted

  • Time machine thinks disk is locked

I am having a significant issue.
Earlier today I was trying Chronosync which was backing up to my extreme harddrive.
In this time, time machine decided to do the same to the same drive and threw up an error saying the disk was locked.
After chronos finished I tried time machine again and now its not having any of it. It takes about an hour of saying 'preparing disk' before eventually deciding the disk is locked (It absolutely is not locked.)
Any ideas how to fix this one?

Are these backing-up to the same partition, or different ones?
If the same partition, that's not a good idea (see #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum).
Either way, try turning off both TM and Chronosync. Eject, disconnect, and power down the drive for a few moments. Then reconnect and run +*Repair DIsk+* (not permissions) on it via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).

  • Startup Disk is Locked?

I'm working on an older Mac (G3 Blue & White PowerPC w/OS 8.6) for a customer and there are many problems. The one I'm facing now is an error that reads "Startup Disk is locked. Your changes will not be saved when you quit Sherlock. This happened when I clicked Sherlock in the Apple Menu.
I'm wondering if this problem is causing the other problems as well. Some of those include will not boot to original desktop without the OS CD. Missing .Pics folder...this being the most critical loss. Startup Disk and Apple Talk are the only two Control Panels. Chooser, Control Panels and Sherlock are the only things in the Apple Menu.
I've retrived her documents from the hard drive but not the pictures.
I'm kinda new to Mac's (if you haven't noticed) but learning everyday!

    Hi, PhilW -
...will not boot to original desktop without the OS CD.
It sounds like the machine is being booted to the OS Install CD.
Startup Disk and Apple Talk are the only two Control Panels. Chooser, Control Panels and Sherlock are the only things in the Apple Menu.
Those are the only items of those kinds included in the OS on an OS Install CD.
Although an OS Install CD will install a more complete OS, with a full assortment of control panels, Apple Menu items, extensions, etc., the OS on the CD, which is what is running the machine when the machine is booted to the CD, has a very limited assortment of them.
The one I'm facing now is an error that reads "Startup Disk is locked. Your changes will not be saved when you quit Sherlock.
That is not an error. When the machine is booted to a CD, the CD is the startup disk. Since such a CD can not be written to under any circumstances (which is one of their advantages), it is, in effect, a locked disk.
With the machine booted to the CD, have you tried selecting the OS on the hard drive in the Startup Disk control panel? It may be that the CD was the last boot volume set in that control panel, hence set in PRAM; and that is why it seems not able to boot unless the CD is in the drive. Resetting the boot volume in Startup Disk would be the solution for that.
If there is no selectable OS on the hard rive presented in Startup Disk, that would indicate one of three things -
    • The System Folder on the hard drive has become 'unblessed'. The solution for that is to re-bless it. To do that, go to the System Folder on the hard drive (not the one on the CD). Drag the files System and Finder out onto the desktop. Close the System Folder. Drop those two files back into the closed System Folder on the hard drive.
    • The System Folder on the hard drive has become damaged in some way, to the point it is no longer capable of booting the Mac.
    • There is no valid System Folder on the hard drive.
The solution for the last two is the same - re-install the OS. You can do that while booted to the OS Install CD. Run the program Mac OS Install, and follow the prompts to do a normal (generic) install of the OS.
If there is a System Folder already on the hard drive, and it is necessary to re-install the OS, it would be wise to do a Clean Install of it. Note that a Clean Install removes nothing - it will install a brand new, 'clean' System Folder, rename the old one to Previous System Folder, and little else.
