This file is set to be launched by this PDF file...

We have an application that generates PDF files with clickable intranet links.  The links go something like this...
http://server_name/reports/rwservlet?server=rep_exor_mid&module=I_DYNC_SGMT_DTLS_RPRT.rep& userid=&envid=EPFS&desformat=pdf&destype=cache&P_ASSD_I_DYNC_SGMT_ID=22690
No matter what i've tried, in Reader 9.4, and X, I get the error message "This file is set to be launched by this PDF file.  This is currently disallowed by your system administrator."
I know they've disabled access to clickable files within Adobe, but why can't I get an internal website to launch via link in Reader?
Thanks in Advance.

Hey Abhigyanmodi
I've noticed that this change was implemented, i realize that this was done to avoid issues with hackers, script kiddies, social engeneering etc. But Adobe should have a way for corporations using their product to allow vbs, exe, etc run from within their companies, and dissallow running those types of files if they are external to their companies domain. This does still open a social engineering security vector, but that should not be governed by Adobe, that should be a risk that the business should be allowed to take if they would like to take that risk.
From what i can see there are a bunch of different registry keys that can be used to customize adobe, but i cannot see any that would allow for the above comment. Does this functionality come with the newest version of Adobe acrobat? The only workaround that systems administrators can now give their users are either
A) use another product
B) use the registry hack, which ends up opening up a seriously large attack vector, that is above most users heads.
C) don't use vbs scripts to open different files, and just link directly to a certain file
Adobe knows that users have been using vbs files to open lets say excel files to certain sheets, on certain cells in that sheet, and by fixing their security hole ended up creating alot of problems for their users. I am wondering if they will be comming out with an alternate way that is Adobe approved to allow users to open specific files, again lets say excel files to certain sheets and certain cells in those sheets
Cheers,
Tac

Is ther some limit to the number of books or total storage used in IBooks?  Thanks....

    Hi jybravo70,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you may be experiencing issues on your non iOS 8 devices because iOS 8 is required to set up or join a Family Sharing group.
The following information is located in the print at the bottom of the article.
Apple - iCloud - Family Sharing
Family Sharing requires a personal Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes. Music, movies, TV shows, and books can be downloaded on up to 10 devices per account, five of which can be computers. iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are required to set up or join a Family Sharing group and are recommended for full functionality. Not all content is eligible for Family Sharing.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • When I drag pdf files into iBooks Author, the background in the pdf file changes into the colour of my book (brown/beige)?

    Hi,
when I drag a pdf file (when working in Preview) into iBooks Author, the background colour in the pdf file changes into the background colour of the book.
This happens not consistently, sometimes the background of the pdf file does not change (and stays white), sometimes it's like the text in the pdf file is 'lifted' of the file, and put on the page in iBooks Author (with a brown/beige background).
All the pdf files are scanned pdf's, nothing comes out of Pages, Word, Excel,...
    Anybody?
    Thanks a lot!
    Wouter

I have the same question (posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25644741#25644741).
I believe this is because the PDFs have transparent backgrounds. As far as I can tell, the only way to fix it is to export the PDF as another file, such as an image file. Or perhaps convert it to Word and import it that way.

unable to combine files on acrobat 8 getting error message "no PDF file was created beacuse Acrobat encountered an unidentified error" Please help

A lot of the time the files can not be combined because of incompatible fonts, or at least font sets that could not be resolved. Maybe that will give you some direction to look at.

How do I export a .doc file to my online adobe account into a .pdf file?

    Hi tennisknight,
The online Adobe account you are referring to, is it Acrobat.com cloud?
You need to purchase a subscription for PDF Pack and then sign in to : https://cloud.acrobat.com/
Select the files saved in 'Acrobat.com' and then click on the 'Create pdf' tab to convert the selected doc files to pdf.
Alternatively you can download the .doc file from the online account and use Adobe Acrobat to convert it to pdf.

    Hi jgallu7382,
The latter is easily accomplished using the Drawing Markup tools, which are available in both the free Adobe Reader, and in Acrobat. Copying/pasting text into the PDF is something that you could do using the editing tools that are available only in Acrobat. Note, however, that Acrobat isn't intended to be a text-editing application, so editing there won't be as robust as in an application designed specifically for that purpose. (It's also worth mentioning that you won't be able to alter a PDF if it has document permissions applied that would prevent you from doing so.)
I hope that answers your questions.
    Best,
    Sara

I just downloaded a file.  The computer says it is not pdf file.  What is wrong?

    HI krishbiliyar,
Where did you download the file from? Does the file have PDF filename extension? And where are you getting the message that it's not a PDF file? In Reader or Acrobat?
I look forward to hearing back from you.

pdf file is too big (7MB). Need a pdf file with max size 4MB. How to minimize the size of a pdf file?

The other alternative is the Save As Other>Reduce File Size. The PDF Optimizer gives you more control. You might also use the audit feature in the PDF Optimizer to see where the size problem is coming from. You might find that in the WORD file you can select and image and then go to the FORMAT (pictures) menu and select compress for all of the bitmaps in the file. That will typically use 150 dpi by default that is adequate for most needs.

  • Launch Reader from PDF file in Google Chrome browser PDF viewer

    Hello!
So I have a fillable PDF form which runs document level JavaScript to essentially render itself inactive (hides fields, etc.) if opened in anything other than Reader or Acrobat. This works great, especially in Google Chrome has known problems with submitting fillable PDF forms properly.
Here is an example form: https://luxsci.com/forms/6296/2251/Qlg5/Medical_Center_Intake_Form.pdf
Open in Chrome and it's unusable, there's a warning layer, and a JavaScript alert. Open in Reader or Acrobat and it renders fine and submit works great.
When the file is downloaded in Chrome it's saved locally, i.e. Chrome displays the file URL as: file:///C:/Users/David/Downloads/Medical_Center_Intake_Form%20(3).pdf
I am trying to make the process of opening the file from Chrome in reader as simple as possible for the end user. As such, I am wondering if there is a way to add a button which will launch Reader on the end-user's desktop/laptop and open this file?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Thanks for your comments, but that isn't the issue. We provide form processing services and have developed an effective workaround via document level JS to render the form unusable and non-submittable (is that a word?!) if opened in anything other than Adobe Reader or Acrobat. The complaint we are trying to deal with is that non-tech savvy users can't figure out how to open the PDF in Reader when Chrome auto opens it for them in the built-in broken Chrome PDF viewer.
While I could certainly provide instructions for how to install/enable the Adobe Reader plugin in Chrome, the point is to avoid requiring the non tech savvy end-user to do anything other than click a button to open the file in Reader. So asking them to install/configure the adobe PDF plugin in their browser is not a feasible solution. So what I want is this:
-PDF opens in Chrome's built-in PDF viewer and user sees notice that they can't use the form in the current program.
-User can click a button saying "Open this file in Adobe Reader"
-Clicking the button launches the local computer's Reader application, and opens the file. The PDF is then rendered normally and can be filled out and submitted as normal.
I don't really think it's possible because of browser security restrictions against launching executables, but since the browser is just showing an embedded locally downloaded PDF file, I thought maybe there's a way...
    Thanks!
