This file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB is corrupt

...& unreadable. Please run chklst utility."
First I had problems with the battery not charging when connected to my laptop... this is probably due to the USB port on my laptop (probably, because I have no idea just what sort of USB port is 1.1. or 2.0... I'm an inept user, for goodness sake... emphasis on the inept!), so I now charge it up using the apple mains adapter.
Now, the case of the complete wiping out of all songs on the iPod seems to be related to the following message that keeps popping up: "This file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB is corrupt & unreadable. Please run chklst utility."
I've reistalled the iPod and iTunes software... several times... because I don't know how to "... run chklst utility." *points at big INEPT USER sign on head* I then am allowed to reload songs from my iTunes Library on to my iPodNano. They will stay there until the next time I have to recharge, or I connect the Nano back up to the laptop to add more songs.
Perhaps these toys were never meant for Inepts like me, eh?

*big BIG sighs*
Than you for directing me to the discussion thread on corrupt file mesages. It's acutally very useful (and Inept-proof!).
Unfortunately, I'm encountering another problem when trying to follow the instructions to load the iPod Updater software:
I click on the Update Software button, and the screen changes to say: Thank You.
Your iPod Software download will start automatically.
followed by instructions on what to do next: Install the latest iPod Software.
After your download is finished, install the iPod Updater. Just launch the assistant and follow the on-screen instructions.
Unfortunately.......... My iPod Software download doesn't start automatically, and I'm just sitting here twiddling my thumbs until, eventually, I bang my head on the desk, look skyward and cry, "WHY ME????!"
Do you know?
Why me? What I try now?

  • File or directory \ipod_control\itunes\itunesprefs is corrupt or unreadable

Every time I connect my ipod (30g video) to my computer it pops up the "ipod setup assistant". Then I get a message on the bottom right of my computer screen that says "file or directory \ipod_control\itunes\itunesprefs is corrupt or unreadable, please run chkdsk. I ran chkdsk and it didn't help. I'm sure this is an easy problem, but I am clueless. Can anyone help?

    Greetings,
What you want to do here is to Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater.
    Restoring: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
    iPod Updater: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
We have been discussing the chkdsk issue since Nov 2004, when it was introduced by some particularly buggy iPod firmware.
For more info visit our thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=179452
and the Apple KB article on the issue: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300554
Feel free to post back should you require further assistance. There is a whole stack of information on the chkdsk issue, but I won't seek to bore you with it here...
I add a note of caution - in that chkdsk issues usually affect Gen4+ iPods, and you have a Gen5. If the Restore does not solve your problems, let us know. I have been consulting on some cases where a hardware fault was to blame, and the user had to get their Pod changed out...
    Kind regards,

iTunes recognizes the nano. it seams to be accepting songs, but when I drag and drop this is the message that appears. None of the songs I dragged and dropped are on the nano. The nano seems to be working fine otherwise.

  • \IPod_Control\ITunes\ITunesDB is corrupted: use chdsk utility

Can anybody tell me what this means? What the problem is and what i can do about it? Every time I plug my IPod into my computer, it takes ITunes a long time to recognize it, and then resets everything: I get the box for setting up the original settings, and all my music from the IPod is gone. And when I try to transfer music again from ITunes to the IPod, it says "Update complete" but there is nothing on the IPod.
    Help???!!

To run CHCKDSK, you can open My Computer in Windows Explorer, right-click on your hard drive (the one with iTunes installed), select the second tab (can't remember the name). You should then have two options : Check for errors or Defragment. You want to check for errors, so click on the first button, then check both checkboxes. Windows should tell you that it doesn't have the right priviledges (or something similar), and ask you if you want to schedule a disk check the next time you restart you computer. Click Yes, and then restart.
Another option would be to reinstall iTunes, which could repair (I mean replace) the corrupted file ...

  • \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB, file damaged

I have a problem with my mini ipod, maybe anybody knows what to do or is it broken??
    my computer shows:
"file or list \iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB is damged and not readable.conduct CHKDSK"
is this a ipod problem or pc problem? or has it to do with the fact maybe that i updated the software??
all music from my ipod is gone and i m not able to get the music from my library to the ipod because then the above fault message appears.
    I am grateful for help....

chkdsk is "check disk" program which you have to run it under dos command. I did try and found there were problems with file / directory structure within ipod. However, this did not fixed the problem.
So nextthing I did was the restore the ipod to factory default setting. That just cured all the problems I had!!!

I have tried a few things but iTunes closes right after i click okay. Anyone know anything?

Look in your Home > Music folder.  There should be an iTunes folder there and it should have a number of files and folders including one called library.itl  You want to guide iTunes to that file.  If you don't see that file or folder then in your next post you will have to be very specific as to what you do see or how you have your iTunes set up because that's where it should be according to default settings.

  • I need help every time my iTunes library updates i get this error messege: The iTunes.itl file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder. but the file should be there.

Every time I have to upgrade iTunes it gives me this messege:'The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder.' the file should be there but I don't understand why it does this every time Apple upgrades the Itunes library. Its on the computer somewhere but it only affects this login on my computer (meaning on this Windows Account). Why does my iTunes do this? Then I have to spend hours placing all my libraries back together and all my music back into the library. Which usually takes me a few days to sort all out. What is wrong with my iTunes? The iTunes folder is a folder in my Music folder where I store the iTunes music/files/libraries at on my computer so I can have all of the iTunes files in one place on my computer.

I have a Windows 7 operating system my computer runs from.

Let's try this first. Hold down the Shift key while you try to launch iTunes. You should eventually see the following dialog:
Click "Choose library". Browse to inside the following location (depending on what operating system you're running):
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes library
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\iTunes\
... and open the iTunes library you find in there.
