This forum is running very slowly for me....

Hi,
I'm on a new 24" iMac and for the most part things have been running well. But starting yesterday, this forum started running very slow. Especially today, just clicking the link to this forum from my bookmark takes at least 2 minutes to go through.
When I click a link to go to this forum, the blue progress bar progresses one (1) inch and then stops for a long while. Finally if I wait, the link usually goes through.
I've browsed to other links around to make sure and it seems to be mostly this site. Sometimes other forums (The Parallels Forum) may run very slow as well.
Is this just the way it is with forums on the web or is this a real defect I'm experiencing ?
I know this question seems stupid, but I'm very curious as to what could be happening.
Many Thanks for any help on this, Frank B.

I concur with Kappy and Bee. I'm in San Jose and I've observed a distinct slowdown in the past few months. Nearly unbearable, such that I don't read them much these days.
The only thing worse than reading the forums on a Mac, is reading them over the Edge in Safari on the iPhone. Most of the time, the app times out before a forum page comes up .
Maybe they are doing some sort of upgrade in transition, just like the Apple Store in Valley Fair Mall (Santa Clara, CA). You'd have to see to believe the congestion they are dealing with there in their temporary 'boutique-shoe-store-sized' store -- could be < 800 sq ft) !!

  • I have a MacBook  late 2008 with OS X Lion 10.7.5 that is running very slowly for the last month

My MacBook is running very slowly.  It takes an extremely long time to load an application, to respond to a command, and to quit an application. This has developed over the last month or so.  Should I take to Apple Store?  A friend suggested that I may need more RAM.

If you have 2GB of memory, that is the minimum required for OS X 10.7 Lion, however, many have found it needs 4GB+ to run reasonably well. Click on the apple on the left of the menu bar, then about this mac, to see how much memory you have.
To confirm if more memory will help, from Launchpad and utilities, load the Activity Monitor. Look at the system memory tab, specifically at page ins and page outs. If page outs is 10%-15% or more of page-ins, you can use more memory for what you run. When the system is low on memory OS X will write the contents of memory to the hard drive to make room for something else to run. Too much of this can impact performance. If you need more memory OWC and Crucial are both quality sources.
Also check your free hard drive space. Generally, you want 10% or more of the capacity to be free for systems usage. If free space gets too low, system performance will also be impacted.

  • After automatic update of Firefox 3.6, it is now running VERY slowly!

After having Firefox automatically update itself on June 22, 2010, it is now running VERY slowly for me, and is taking a LONG time (10-15 minutes) to even open!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Yesterday,Tuesday, June 22, 2010

I installed 3.6.4 on XP June 23 and had much the same experience, except Firefox 3.6.4 never finished opening, even after nearly an hour, and brought my entire system to an excruciatingly slow crawl, even though pgm mgr showed FF getting 0% and system idle with 97-98. This happened twice with a reboot in between. Finally had to roll back to a previous restore point and all is fine now, except--no new version of Firefox. I'll wait to see more feedback about 3.6.4 before trying to install again.

  • Equium L10 - Is running very slowly

    I have a Toshiba Equium L10 (496MB RAM, 1.5Ghz celeron M Processor, 37.2GB HDD)
It has been running very slowly for a while now and am getting really annoyed with it. It takes like 8 minis for the desktop to load plus a few more mins for the programs to load up. I am fairly ok with computers and things like registry editing etc to some extent.
Please could you help me out as i cannot afford to upgrade my laptop at the moment?
I have tried to uninstall as many of the unwanted programs on the computer and am left with a 23.7GB free hard disk.
It is a bit of an old laptop now but I am trying to get the most possible out of it at the moment so plase help me
    Thank you

To be honest I dont know what you want at the moment.
Do you want to upgrade your notebook or you want to make Windows faster?
I dont know what programs you have installed but after you have removed all programs that you dont need you should clean your system using CCleaner.
Furthermore disable all start up programs that you dont need in msconfig and in the start up folder in start menu. Dont forget to defragment your HDD.
In worst case you have to reinstall Windows. Not all Windows problems can be solved without complete new installation.
Last but not least the Equium L10 can be upgraded to 1GB RAM. This can also help you to make Windows faster.

  • Computer running very slowly

Computer has been running very slowly for some time and I have decided to try and find out what is wrong.
I have several folders on my desktop, some of which contain many jpegs.  I know I they are causing part of the problem.  Can I just put all the folders into one folder and move that new folder to the documents folder in my home folder?
I have never emptied my downloads folder.  Does that play a role in my computer being slow?
I don't know how much of these are relevant but maybe?
Computer came with 10.6 and has been updated to Yosemite.
I have a bootable clone on my external HD which I use as a backup.  Today, for the first time, I can't boot from the external.
I am the only user of the machine, but I do have another account.  Last night I tried to switch users and it just wouldn't switch.  I waited over 5 minutes.
I have emptied all trash (desktop, iTunes, iPhoto) and have reset Safari (clear history and website data).
I looked at activity monitor and though I'm not sure what I'm looking I copied these numbers:
for the CPU %used was System .71 (and that was in red), user .91 and idle 98.2
for the memory I have 2.0G memory and am using 1.94
for disk activity data read/sec is 758 kb and data written /sec 12.0 KB (in red)
    Thanks for any help/advoce.

  • When I add a while loop to the vi "niScope EX Multi-Device Configured Acquisition (TClk)" to acquire data for multiple times, it works but it runs very slowly.

Because I want to acquire the similar data for multiple times and then take an average to increase SNR, I add a while loop to the vi "niScope EX Multi-Device Configured Acquisition (TClk)".  It works but it runs very slowly (about 1 sec for each iteration). I think I had put the while loop at a wrong position, which makes the vi run from the very beginning in each iteration. So I really want to know where should I put the while loop to improve the speed? I have attached all the vi and subvi.
    Thanks very much.

    Dear Zainykhas,
Thank you for posting this to the discussion forums and for uploading some sample code.  I took a lok at the issue you have been having, and it is unclear to me as to why you have placed two for loops around the original while loop.  My understanding is that you want to use the original Sample.vi and want to execute this N times where N is the Max Freq divided by Interval so that you can scan for a range of frequencies.
Why not just put Sample.vi around one for loop and use the increment counter scaled by the interval to count up towards Max Freq and insert the desired Frequency into the cluster using Bundle By Name?
    Kind Regards,

  • Macbook Pro has begun to run very slowly. Is there any way to fix this?

Yesterday my mac started to run very slowly to the extent that it takes far longer to open files, apps and even startup. There is no reason in particular I can think of for this happening - computer was used normally that day.
I have run diskutility and the HD seems to be fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • My macbook pro is running very slowly since upgrading to Yosemite.  How can I cure this or how do I remove Yosemite?

My macbook pro (13inch mid 20101) is running very slowly since I upgraded to Yosemite.  How can I cure this or how can I remove Yosemite?
    OS X 10.10.1
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo
    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB
Opening apps or web pages is incredibly slow and extremely frustrating.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My Mac is running very slowly especially when I am using Facebook and related products. What can I do to fix this?

Hello everyone. My Mac is running very slowly when I am using the internet, and especially when on Facebook. The little rainbow globe spins around for ages before changing pages etc. I have done several virus checks etc, but cannot find anything wrong. Sorry, but I am not tech savvy, so have difficulty with these issues.

Thanks for your reply. Well, I am not sure about the OS X version, I just gave that info from the Install DVD. I have the machine on automatic updates so I guess I am using a newer version. I know it is iMac Snow Leopard and I bought it in 2009. It is the 21.5 inch model. That is all I can tell you. I have 499GB and have used only 32GB, so it isn't a space problem.

  • Macbook running very slowly

Hello - I have a white Macbook bought three years ago running Mac OS X 10.4.11 with a 2GHz processor and 1GB SDRAM.
I've been very happy with my purchase and use it mainly for word processing, internet, watching DVDs and email use.
Recently, for no apparant reason, it suddenly began to run very slowly - and I mean slow. It can take 10-15 minutes to open an application.
I have not installed any software or, as far as I know, visited any dodgy websites.
Following some advice from Apple forums I looked at the activity monitor in the utilities folder and this is what I found:
CPU is around 2% used by the user and 2% used by the system with about 96% idle.
System memory is 183MB wired, 184MB active, 255MB inactive, 623MG used.
Disk usage: space utilised 68MB, space free 5.37MB.
Again following advice from Apple forums I created a new user, logged out and logged in again as the new user and the Mac works fine - very quick liked it used to be.
I assume this indicates that the problem isn't with the computer hardware, but with my original user account?
I've tried starting the Mac while holding the Option key down. It seemed to help for a bit and then slowed down again.
I have two CD disks that came with the original documentation - Mac OS X Install Discs 1 and 2.
My question is this - is there any way I can fix the original user account so it runs properly again?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Many thanks to Michael for pointing me in the right direction.
I've made some progress on this and thought it might be useful to detail what I did here in case it proves useful to anyone experiencing the same problems.
Prompted by Michael's suggestion that the hard drive was struggling to cope through lack of space I carried out a thorough spring clean of my files, deleting any that I didn't need any more.
Because the machine was responding so slowly this was a laborious process. It may be worth noting that image, sound and video files are big memory eaters.
I also cleared out the trash.
Then I cleared out the library>cache.
I then started the laptop up in safe mode (holding down the shift key after the start-up tone), which also apparantly deletes some unwanted files.
I then started the machine up normally. Much better, much faster. According to the Activity Monitor the space free on the desk has gone from 5.37MB to about 7.5MB.
What to do next? Some disk maintenance my be in order.
Michael suggests Drive Genius, but as far as I can tell this is only available for more recent operating systems that the one I have on my laptop.
Others have suggested OnyX which is free, but this also appears to be for OS X 6 or later.
I haven't to find suitable versions of these yet, so can't comment on their effectiveness.
But now at least I have a functioning laptop
    Thanks

  • Deleting "Prompt User" dialog causes VI to lock PC or run very slowly.

I have been coding a VI in LabVIEW 8.2.1 for several weeks and had to go back and remove some "Prompt User" dialog boxes.  After removing them, the VI would cause my PC to become unresponsive.  In an attempt to isolate the problem, I started to remove sections of code and discovered that there is a single dialog that seems to be causing this issue.
The VI runs fine with the dialog left in, but causes problems when removed.  Even if the dialog is logically impossible to enable, it still runs fine.  I currently have the VI set to run at a high priority because timing is critical for this application.  Lowering the priority seems to alleviate the issue, but I would rather not do this.
I am not sure how to proceed from this point, and I had trouble finding a similar issue in the forums.   Perhaps this problem is specific to my PC.  I would appreciate any feedback.
I have attached the VI with this post.  I have removed almost all functionality from the VI but it still demonstrates the problem .  This version does not lock the computer, but does cause it to run very slowly when it misbehaves.
If you need any more information, let me know.

The reason probably has to do with you having a loop that is set to run at full speed.  This can hog processor time.  Insert a "Wait.vi" or a "Wait until next ms multiple.vi" inside your while loop and wire in a value of 10 ms and see if the problem goes away.  Even wiring in a value of 0 or 1 ms might do the trick.  If your vi is meant to react only to user input, you could even put in a wait of 100 or 200 ms, and the user will not notice it.  This way your processor will have lots of time to run other tasks or applications.
By the way, your vi did not slow down on my system, but that is probably because it is a multiprocessor system.

  • Mac is running very slowly.

    Hi Apple Community,
My mac has been running very slowly, and there has been several other problems as well. I have a early 2009 iMac, running OS X 10.9.5. First of all, I have recently moved all of my photos and music to an external hard drive to clear up the internal hard drive, and Time Machine is also backing up to an external hard drive, and the internal hard drive is now about 60% free. I thought that would be able to get my Mac to run quicker, but it is still has slow as it was before. I have read recent community posts on what to do about this, one suggested downloading Etresoft to get a report on the condition of my mac. I ran Etresoft (I honestly don't know what to make of anything in the report), and the report is here:
    Problem description:
Mac runs very slowly, applications will take longer than usual to open. Internal hard drive is about 60% full, and 3 external hard drives are used to hold photos, music, and backups.

So if someone could please explain what this means, or suggest some other ways to find out what is wrong with my Mac, it would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks
    Morgan

You need to uninstall all Norton Antivirus softwarwe/ utilities.
    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us
Also, uninstall all Seagate hard drive software.
In addition, you need to install more RAM into your iMac.
Your year and model IMac can take a max. total of 8 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend that you purchase and install the maximum amount of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • My MacBook Pro is running very slowly! Please help!

Hi all, as of late last year my MacBook Pro started running very slowly. As I'm a novice when it comes to computers I thought I'd turn to the interweb for solutions. I've tried a couple of basic things but don't seem to be getting anywhere.I ran the EtreCheck program as it seemed to help others. Would love some help interpreting this...

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
