This heat is ridiculous

I have a dual cooling fan that props up my MBP and after a while, the fans just shut off and the temp hits the high 100s before not showing anything. What can I do? The nearest Apple store is 60 miles away and I do not have the time to go.

Why can't Apple make decent hardware? I agree fully that the heat output of a MBP is ludicrous. My wife recently bought a 17" Toshiba laptop with Intel Core2Duo (admittedly running at only 1.7ish GHz compared to my MBP Core Duo 2.16GHz) and it runs as cool as a cucumber. AND you can, if you want, actually use it as a LAPTOP! It has a vent on the side which spews out hot air - it actually COOLS the processor! I wonder why MBPs actually have fans, I can never feel any hot air actually coming out of the thing. I never dare close the lid until at least five minutes after I've switched it off for fear of causing irreparable heat damage to the screen.
Using the whole unit as a heatsink is really just a lame excuse by Apple which translates as "no, we haven't found a way to cool the processor. It has never occurred to us to cut some extra vents in the case. It might look a bit ugly, and all we care about is aesthetics, not performance or value for money. Hopefully running the processor and all other internal components at a volcanic temperature will considerably shorten their life, so you'll have to buy a new Mac. We're all off to Starbucks now".
Oh yes, and her 17" Toshiba was £299 delivered, less than a FIFTH of what I paid for my 15" MacBook Pro/toaster! And it has SIX USB ports, unlike my TWO! ...And a card reader, and 2GB RAM, and 120GB HD, and Firewire, and a modem, and a numerical input pad (why don't 17" Macs have these?).....I could go on.....oh yes, and the DVD writer actually WORKS! (See all the complaints about shoddy DVD drives in this forum if you dare!). Oh yes, the speakers and trackpad are better on my Mac. That's where my other £1200 went!
It annoys me that the Mac OS costs thousands of dollars / pounds. Yes, it IS a good OS, but the fact that we have to pay such a massive premium to buy the sub-standard hardware to run it really hacks me off. Especially when you consider that it is a close relative of Linux...erm, how much does that cost?
Shame, I used to like Apple, having owned a succession of Macs.

    Snakexor,
    Hard to tell.
It really depends on your tolerance to noise and/or your goals - OC, pimped out rig, etc.
I usually prefer something on the silent side. SilenX were good for me, pretty quiet. I have XP90 though, XP-120 doesn't fit neo2.
    Check out these guys:

They usually know what they are talking about. There are 3 fans suggested with XP-120 there.
    Hope this helps.....

ALways love my iphone. Now itunes is ALWAYS unresponive to my iphone. Just stops working when I plug it in. downloaded older version, newer version.....use my iphone for my pdf book in college.....this is just ridiculous....

Downloaded older version and newer version of what. Any attempts to downgrade iOS are not allowed. Also, using iTunes with the latest iOS and iTunes requires the latest version.
I suggest that you remove and reinstall iTunes using this support document. You need to follow the steps exactly or you will just create more problems, which I think you already have. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923

  • This crossgrade is RIDICULOUS!!

Apple said that they would make this Intel transition as painless as possible. Well this crossgrade nonsense completely contradicts that! I can order an upgrade from FCP 1,2,3 online or in a store, but I can't purchase an upgrade from 4 or 5 to the Universal? That is terrible! What are they thinking?
Why not do the upgrade like every other piece of software? Insert 5.1 disk....insert original 4.5 or 5 disk...done. No instead, I have to take the disk I paid for, stick it in the mail, and hope it arrives safely in Indiana. Is this 1975 or 2006? I wouldn't be so bothered if you could bring the disk to a retailer and exchange it, but this is nuts!
Now I have this nice new super-fast intel machine, but I can't run my software for another week or more. Furthermore, there are no detailed instructions on the proper way to do this. Do you instal the old version on the intel first then upgrade with the new disk?
Hey Apple, do you realize that this will probably just cause people to take there chances with a download from a torrent site?

but I can't purchase an upgrade from 4 or 5 to the Universal?<<</div>
Sure you can. The details can be accessed here: http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade
Why not do the upgrade like every other piece of software? Insert 5.1 disk....insert original 4.5 or 5 disk...done.<<</div>
Oh really? Most of the software I've upgraded doesn't require the previous disc at all - just the serial number.
I have to take the disk I paid for, stick it in the mail, and hope it arrives safely<<</div>
Yep. The same thing the other thousands of people who've done the crossgrade have had to do. Mine took exactly 5 business days from the time I dropped my old install disc in the mail.
Now I have this nice new super-fast intel machine, but I can't run my software for another week or more<<</div>
Don't get mad at Apple because you didn't do your research - the process has been well documented since February of this year - maybe you were stuck in 1975 and didn't notice. By the way, how much software did you upgrade in 1975?
Furthermore, there are no detailed instructions on the proper way to do this<<</div>
Wrong. The details are in the "Installing Your Software" booklet that comes with the crossgrade package. The 5.1 installer doesn't need the old FCP install disc ... otherwise why would Apple want you to send it in? It ain't rocket surgery.
Hey Apple, do you realize that this will probably just cause people to take there chances with a download from a torrent site?<<</div>
People that will do that will always be around. They're also usually the ones that cheat on their taxes and spouses, pilfer from their employer and in general have a nonexistent or very weak sense of morality.
I have to say that yours is one of the most pathetic posts I've seen around here in a long, long time. Or in other words; your post is RIDICULOUS!!

  • Please help me open itunes! This is getting ridiculous.

This is the third time I've posted this... no one has answered so far... and I've been without iTunes for over a week now!!!
When trying to open iTunes, a dialog box opens up with the caption "*iTunes Setup Assistant*", and header line "*Download Album Artwork*" which tells me how I can go to the iTunes store and get album artwork from there.
Included in this dialog box are two buttons to choose from: "Next" and "Cancel". I have tried clicking on both of these, to no avail. Nothing happens at all, and I cannot close down the box with the "x" in the top left hand corner either.
After a short while (and a whirrring noise from my frozen laptop), another smaller dialog box opens up with the caption: "*Upgrade Available*", detailing: "*A new version of the Qloud plug-in for iTunes (3.0.1090) is available. Click OK to upgrade*". I am offered two buttons: "OK" and "Cancel". Nothing happens when I click on either of these buttons, except that annoying "blink" sound that means 'nothing doing'.
The dialog box appears in front of every window, and cannot be moved out of the way. The only way to close it is to "End Task" through the Windows Task Manager.
iTunes will not open even after re-booting! Reluctantly, I removed the iTunes and the Quick Time programs from the computer, rebooted, and re-installed iTunes, but the bug is STILL there. I've repeated this, pointlessly, about three or four times. The same thing still happens. It's really upsetting not to be able to open my iTunes library, or update my iPod!
    Please help!

What version of the Mac operating system is installed on your MacBook? To find this information, go to the Apple menu, select About this Mac and look where it says version.
iTunes 11.0.1 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, so if you want to use your iPhone with your MacBook, you will need to update the OS on the MacBook at least that far.
You can purchase 10.6.8 on disk from Apple for $20 (in the USA.)
If you want to get a more recent OS, let us know what the specs on your MacBook are, we'll tell you what you can get.
    Best of luck.

  • I know this will sound ridiculous but I have "lost" the arrow key (to go back or forward) at the top on the bar.  I swear I used to be able to just click and arrow to see the previous page and now it's not there.  Help!?

I know this sounds crazy but I have "lost" my arrow key at the top of the screen to go forward or back.  I'm sure it used to be there but it's really bugging me that I can't find it.  It's a real pain trying to go one page back.  Help?!

If this is Safari that you've lost the arrows in,  go to Safari > view > show toolbar.
If the toolbar is present and the arrows missing then right click on the toolbar and select "customize toolbar".
Drag the arrows or the default set back to the bar.

  • This may sound ridiculous but how do you stop a song playing ?

I can play a song, pause a song, shuffle and many other things but I can not find any function that just stops it altogether!
In video you press the "done" button but no such thing appears in music - am I going mad?!

I think that the "Close" just means "make this little music window go away now," not "Close down the music app." At least, that's how it's always worked for me (before and after the upgrade). If you are playing music and doing something else and bring up that music window on top of what you're doing, you still need to hit pause in order to stop the music.
If you hit pause and the "Now Playing" arrow is still up, it doesn't really mean much except that you can easily get back to what you were playing if you go back into your music. Your music isn't still playing. It's just holding your place. That's how I think of it, at least.

  • Nano won't appear in Windows or iTunes...this is getting ridiculous...help!

I've had my iPod for about 4 months.
It isn't appearing in iTunes or Windows.
I've tried the 5 R's, none of which worked.
When I try and use the iPod updater to restore my Nano it just says "Initializing..." and after a few seconds it says "Invalid iPod service version" and shuts down.
My computer operates really slowly when my iPod is connected.
When I try to disconnect it, it takes ages...only to tell me that my iPod can not be disconnected.
So I have no choice but to just pull it out of the USB port.
When my iPod is connected, it just freezes on the "do not disconnect" screen...which doesn't flash, the screen simply freezes.
So when I disconnect it, I have to restart the iPod just to use it.
Please help I've been scouring the support site trying to solve this myself, and sorry for bothering you all with this common question, this is just a last resort as NOTHING I have tried is working.
    Thanks.

I think its an external harddrive library issue bug in itunes<<<</div>
Nope. That's my configuration and no problems whatever.
I switch to Mac for less problems and have had more crashes, pinwheels and issues than I ever imagined<<<</div>
Is that your iPod problem? Please explain more.
Someone from apple must be reading this!<<<</div>
Nope. This is a user-to-user forum. Employees occasionally read posts but not as a regular assignment.
Have you tried the link that Kylene suggested?

  • OK, this is getting ridiculous...

I spend a lot of time writing software to help people with their problems with iTunes for Windows. Heck, I was even invited to that silly event for Discussions contributors (was it MacWorld, or the Developers Conference? .. nvm, doesn't matter.)
A lot of people (I believe it was hundreds or thousands of views!) viewed a topic on how to change the font size in iTunes to something other than the two measly choices Apple offers, so I figured -- here's an opportunity to help people (and yes, maybe get a few donations). So I wrote some software to do it.
I posted in reply to the topic, because it *directly answers a user's question*. The entire thread was deleted. I don't understand why the whole thread is gone. My post -- maybe! But the whole thread?
I also posted a separate topic as an announcement, which was deleted supposedly because it was an advertisement. I do have a donation link on my web page but it is exactly that -- a donation (i.e. it is optional). I even posted the required notice ("I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link."). But hey, it didn't directly answer anyone's question, so I guess I can't do that. It was a long shot anyone would read it anyway; people don't actually read the discussions, they just post their question that 100 other people have already asked!
I really don't see why I should continue to help people here, if Apple is going to resort to draconian measures when deleting posts.

You have been a great help to a lot of posters here (I use a Mac so I haven't had the chance to use most of your software).
If I had a Mac at home, I'd write more software for it. I can't use my Mac at work for personal projects
I hope that whoever deleted your thread will respond to you. I also hope that you don't let this one occurrence sour you on participating in this community. You would be sorely missed.
    Thanks for your kind words
They didn't respond, but it looks like the thread was reinstated. Or, perhaps it was my mistake -- thinking more about it, it is possible I missed that the thread was still active. I didn't see the thread in "My Subscriptions", but that was probably because my last post to it was deleted.
I still don't understand why this particular post was deleted. I'm hoping to get another email from the mods to explain.

  • This is absolutely ridiculous...

Firstly my computer won't even recognize my mini in iTunes but that's not it. Since no songs can be exported to my mini I decided to look around the iPod's menu and stumbled onto the about of the iPod. I was shocked to find that then my iPod that said as clear as day on the box of its capacity of 4 GB is actually 3.7 GB. What kind of nonsense is this when I haven't even put anything onto the iPod. Someone please help me out.

    Hi there!
I'm using a Pentium 4 PC with 2.02 ghz, no error messages have been shown and I've installed the software two times so far. The second run through seems to be better since there have been some folders on the G : removeable drive (the mini's default drive when connected to the computer but i'm sure you know that). I read a few other posts on the issue of having less GB than the box states even when no music is on the mini so I feel I should move on to why I can't get any music on the iPod. In Itunes it states that no iPod is connected to the computer when the USB and all are actually fixed. I tried switching up the USB ports to see if maybe another port would work but that didn't work either

  • Brand new 5k imac GPU heating to ridiculously hot levels under mild use

I'm only browsing the Internet and using Google Hangouts. Presently my GPU die is at 100C and has remained consistent at this temperature throughout the day. The maximum allowed temperature for the GPU die as reported by iStat is 105C.
my rMBP 2014 under a similar load is 117C, however it has an upper limit of (according to iStat) 200C.
I am concerned that the GPU die would come within 5C of overheating under a mild workload. If I were to play a game such as League of Legends I am almost certain that this would cause the GPU die to reach 105C and thus cause the device to power itself off.

GPU proximity is just that. The sensor is near the GPU, not directly in it. Same with any of the other "proximity" sensors. From my Late '09, missing even a GPU proximity sensor. Relatively recent version of iStat Menus, which includes all these "proximity" ones. Don't know what to make of the very high readouts for the GPU Die in your models. Temperature Monitor (free) no longer being supported, but maybe Marcel Bresink, in Hardware Monitor (paid--if it's still being supported for new models) has a note about those. Since those temps are showing high for everyone here, I'd be inclined not to worry about them and use the GPU Proximity as a more reliable guide as to what's going on.
And then from Hardware Monitor, which shows all the same sensors, but with different names. For example, Power Board Proximity is called Power Supply Position 2.
In mine the Northbridge makes a decent proxy for the GPU.

  • Is this heat normal?

Okay, Im running, Safari, Adium, Vuze and iTunes 8 (running Visualizer).
These is my heat readings (from Temperature Monitor):
    CPU A Temperature Diode : 70 C
    Enclosure Bottomside : 40 C
    Graphic Processor Heatsink 1 : 67 C
    Graphic Processor Temperature Diode : 80 C
    Main Heatsink 1 : 67 C
    Main Heatsink 2 : 51 C
    Main Heatsink 3 : 54 C
    Memory Controller : 59 C
    Hard Disk : 45 C
    Wireless Module : 63 C
Im using the lowest end Santa Rosa MBP.
I cant believe how much heat is on the GPU Diode, I heard something bout Nvidia GPU 8600 got issues, should I be worried?

    Thanks

  • This is getting ridiculous - Constant freeze / Apple resets

OK this is now driving me insane and i think i'm going to have to take the ATV back for a refund.
The box just keeps freezing and hangs until the Apple logo comes up with the reset menu. I've run diagnostics but it never finds anything wrong and i swear i'm about to put my foot through this thing.
The symptoms are all over the place.. It first started dropping off the wireless network and freezing when streaming content from my Mac so in the end i cabled it, seems to have sorted it for a while and now if iTunes updates itself at all the ATV stops what it's doing and hangs. This happens on streaming music or internet radio and i've given up on streaming iTunes video content.
It seems the only way i can get it to play anything is with a full sync over cat5 and this is of course NOT what i wanted it for.
Anyone for any ideas? I've stopped it syncing now automatically with iTunes to see if that's the issue and i'm waiting to see the outcome of that.
I see people are having hdmi switching issues so it maybe worth noting this is connected using HDMI to DVI.
    TIA

Many people are seeing problems since latest software updates but they're still probably in the minority.
Are you running 3.0 or 3.01?
I'd advise you to send feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
Apple need to know about such issues.
HDMI has it's own problems in some instances, the issue with DVI is that you may fall fould of HDCP protection issues with purchased content. Component may be a better option, either way you'd need a separate audio feed from AppleTV.
CAt5 is not practical by the sounds of it.
I've always maintained that AppleTV/iTunes for some reason do not handle brief wireless network outages gracefully - and once a connection is lost it does not always automatically re-establish when the cause of the interruption has passed (eg RF interference from microwaves/landline cordless phones/neighbouring networks etc).
Wireless is inherently unreliable in my opinion but when it works it can do so nearly flawlessly.
An option I use on some of my devices is mains powerline networking adapters (I use Devolo, there are many other vendors eg Netgear, Belkin, generic etc) and I find them very effective - might be something to consider trying, though it would only solve the issue if network interruptions not software/hardware faults were the cause.
    Good luck.

  • This battery issue is ridiculous.

I'm completely convinced that this problem stems from the recent update. I've had my laptop for nearly 3 years now, without a single battery problem - let alone any other type of serious problem. And last week, I installed the update I was given, like I do every Wednesday. I try to stay on top of these things - but this is an occasion when I wish I wouldn't have. I'm experiencing the exact same problems. I'll take my computer off the adapter, go downstairs...what have you. And after about a half hour or so - bam! Computer completely dies. No low batter warning, no nothing. I hook it back up to the power adapter, and it begins to start up again. This is completely ridiculous. Why on earth would an suggested update have this effect? I've never had a negative thing to say about my Mac and I'd like to keep it that way! Apple, someone, fix this!
