This is Cablevision's fault. Am I right?

My mother has been running a 20" Intel iMac (the white plastic model) for about two years now without any real problems, which is great. For the first year months we were able to do a video chat without so much as a hiccup. Then we started getting some issues; the chat would start off okay but then one or both of us would freeze in our video image. We'd still be able to hear each other but our video image turned into a static image. Usually what would happen is my mother's image on my screen would freeze (though I'd still hear her talking) and at about the same time my image would get all blocky and artifacted, then within a few minutes my image on her screen would freeze (though, again, she'd still hear me talking).
This happened sporadically but with increasing frequency. Now, and for the past two months or so, we can't establish a connection at all. No matter who instigates the chat, we both see the "Starting video chat..." message and then we get a communication error. The same thing happens if we go for audio only.
Once, and just once, I was able to affect a chat with her. We tried a chat and it failed, of course, so I had her change the iChat bandwidth limitation from "unlimited" to "500k". We tried again and - success! We chatted for about 15 minutes and it was great. Then the next day we tried again (still at 500k) and it stopped working again.
I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that the issue is with Cablevision, her internet provider. But Cablevision is trying to shift the blame onto anything they can. Here's the situation.
My mother's connection has ALWAYS been through an ethernet cable to her cable modem. She has never had a router, never been on a wifi connection, and never had the firewall enabled on her computer. The Cablevision-provided router has no firewall in it. So the issue is definitely not one of routing tables or a firewall.
My mother's iMac has been on 10.4 and 10.5; similarly, my iMac has been on 10.4 and 10.5. All OS installations have always been clean installs on a freshly formatted hard drive. It is HIGHLY unlikely that there were four corrupt operating system installations which would affect this issue.
Two years ago my internet provider was Comcast and my computer sat behind an Airport Extreme Base Station, and my computer used wifi to connect. About a year and a half ago I moved and subsequently switched to Verizon FIOS. My computer still uses wifi to connect but I'm now using the Verizon-provided router, not my Airport Extreme Base Station. In both cases my computer was using DHCP and the router was providing NAT and firewall services, with UPnP enabled on both routers. Regardless of my connection I've always been able to successfully audio and video chat with literally anyone else on my buddy list. It is also worth noting that my mother is the ONLY Cablevision customer on my buddy list. My wife's MacBook Pro is similarly able to connect with anyone else, except my mother.
Frustrated, my mother called Cablevision and asked them to take a look at things. The first thing they did was swap out her cable modem for a newer model. This did nothing.
They then claimed to have run a "line interference test" and told my mother that her line was exceptionally noisy. They told her that the typical lines rate from "0 to -15" with the lower numbers being more noisy, and my mother's line measured a -19 which made it very noisy. (I have no idea what they were using to measure the lines or what the scale actually means, but neither did the Cablevision representative.) They then sent a technician out to her house and found that all of the coax cabling on the outside of the house was badly degraded. (Not surprising since much of it is about 30 years old.) They replaced all of the outside wiring, replaced the splitter, and even ran a new cable to my mother's office. This all did nothing. In fact, I had my mother run a speed test over at SpeakEasy. With the old cabling she was getting 15Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream. With the new cabling she was getting...15Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream. No change.
Cablevision then told her that she should reinstall the operating system on her computer, that Apple's software is to blame. To remedy that I took my wife's laptop to my mother's house, unplugged the ethernet cable from the cable modem, plugged that end into the laptop, and enabled Bonjour messaging on both computers. Each saw the other, and each was able to do an audio and a video chat with them. Therefore, clearly the issue is not with the operating system, the iChat software, or with the ethernet cable that connects my mother's computer to the cable modem.
I then performed a port scan on my mother's internet connection. Ports 1-1024 were wide open, except for ports 21 (FTP) and 80 (HTTP) which were closed. This is not uncommon and wouldn't affect iChat's video conferencing. All ports from 1025 and above, however, were stealth. No response whatsoever. Given that iChat's audio and video conferencing uses ports in that range it seems to me that Cablevision is purposely stealthing those ports which is what's causing the chat to fail.
I then connected the laptop to the cable modem, verified internet connectivity by successfully visiting a web page, and attempted to start a video chat with my wife (who was sitting at my computer at home). This attempt failed.
Finally, I dragged my mother's iMac from her house to my house, hooked it up to my Verizon router, and was able to successfully establish a video conference between it and her grandson (my nephew) up in Boston. This was something she's been unable to do for a long, long time.
I think it's pretty obvious that the problem has something to do with Cablevision, but Cablevision won't accept the responsibility. Now, before I lay down the law with Cablevision, is there ANYTHING ELSE I can do to either solve this problem or provide further evidence that this is Cablevision's doing?

Sounds like you have done most things.
I would ask if at both ends you have System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5mbps ?
I only ask as you don't specifically mention although I ma sure that you have.
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
Don't use Allow Essential Apps as iChat is Not an Essential App.
If using Allow Specifics then make sure Stealth is not On in the Advanced Button
In System Preferences > Sharing make sure Internet Sharing is Off
Has the noise dropped since they changed the cabling ?
DO they offer a VoIP service ?
This tends to block ports 5060-5063 until you pay fro these ports to be opened again (they used to be open until ISPs tried making money for VoIP (Internet Phones) as they lost Long Distance Telcom calls).
In most cases this only effects iChat 2 and 3 as they use port 56060 for the SIP invite - the behind the scenes bit after the Visible Invite).
Does the new modem "Bind" SIP to port 5060 ?
Thomson Alcatel devices do this and so do some Drayteks.
The Draytek can be "Unbound" but the Thomsom Alcatel will need a new modem.
Does the ISP practice a "Fair Usage|" Policy ?
This would be similar to the Bandwidth management that Comcast do although supposedly restricted to "Busy" times.
As the ports appeared "Stealthed" as you say are you sure they are open ?
I would expect the results to be similar in not being able to get a response.
A Cable modem would normally have all ports open and rely on Computer firewalls and such.
Do the DNS Servers appear in System Preferences > Network ?
Try adding a Public one http://www.tech-faq.com/public-dns-servers.shtml
I would think the info in this post would be clear enough fro the ISP to get their finger out.

    How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • This repeat-repeat-repeat fault is isolating a 90 ...

    I do not say this lightly. We are desperate to fix this problem.
    An engineer is booked but many have faled already so a well-founded diagnosis would be welcome.
    (Non-engineers can skip to the bottom of the page to see the latest in atrocious customer service.)
    This is a repeat fault - about 4 times over 3 years.
    On one occasion the 'fix' only lasted 4 days.
    On another the engineer left without fixing anything.
    The next guy persuaded it to work for a few months.
    And here we are again.
    Sometimes the line works but it is very unreliable.
    Using the line a lot seems to clear it up temporarily.
    User diagnotics (except line test) always point to the BT line.
    Often the outgoing audio starts off at zero.
    Next thirty seconds the outgoing voice is very buzzy.
    Eventually the outgoing voice becomes audible.
    Sometimes the outgoing audio stays at zero.
    Tone dialling is dodgy.
    Sometimes a 'redial' fails but dialling very slowly succeeds.
    Sometimes the dial tone continues when trying to dial.
    Sometimes even 1 handset connected directly does not work properly.
    Things get much worse if a microfilter is used.
    Connecting/disconnecting the router seems to make no difference.
    We have tried at least 3 working handsets and 6 working microfilters.
    All items work fine on a similar BT line elsewhere.
    Some were even new items bought from the BT shop.
    The automated line test seems to pass 99% of the time.
    Yet sometimes even BT helpdesk cannot hear our outgoing voice.
    This line supports a carelink phone.
    My father in-law is 90 and has health issues.
    It is unbelievable that this problem has not been traced and fixed.
    BT Customer service 'help' line ???
    In 40 plus minutes the "help" desk pushed me beyond furious.
    The first Indian faults helper took all the details.
    Then she told me to get my local engineer to investigate and that he should contact BT engineers.
    She then passed me to billing for no obvious reason.
    The lady in billing spoke better English.
    She took a few details and then passed me back to faults.
    The next guy seemed technically clueless.
    I told him that 6 different designs of microfilter did not fix it.
    This included a T-shaped one and two with captive leads.
    All 6 worked elsewhere on a BT line with broadband.
    He insisted that the fix was to change the microfilter drop cable.
    (What, all 6 have a broken 'drop cable' ? Really ???)
    He then REFUSED to send an engineer because auto-test found no faults.
    So, no diagnostic skills and unwilling to satisfy a direct request !
    (Who hired him and how did he get in at all ?)
    It then took repeated requests and a non-abusive but long and exceedingly
    stressful verbal fight just to get someone sent out to fix this.
    What happened next seems to prove that outsourcing BT call centres is a real disaster.
    It also underlines that helpdesks don't have to be unspeakably stressful for the customer.
    The UK engineering appointments lady called me and was very helpful.
    She suggested that the line should be flagged because of his age and health.
    She seemed to be the one who was able to cheerfully provide me with some actual help.

    (= repeat-repeat-repeat-repeat-repeat fault in recent memory).
    I was told it would be fixed on Monday.
    (The engineers had received the task early Monday)
    I was told it would be fixed on Tuesday afternoon or at worst Weds morning.
    Then I was told definitely today.
    No sign of any repair activity AT ALL.
    This is a 'vulnerable' case.
    He has been left isolated AGAIN for more than three days.
    (5 days if you count the the original error that cut him off)
    What on earth is going on ?
    The prority care person hung up after 3 rings (I counted).
    I picked the phone up and got "dead air" at the other end.
    Apparently that counts as a communication attempt.
    I have emailed two different mods but they are clearly both
    too busy with faults in general to reply yet.
    Is anyone actually going to DO something to fix thiis ?

    Then you most likely have a 2nd generation. To confirm, check the model number on the back. if it is A1288, it is a 2nd gen and can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1.

    You may have to force your iPad into recovery mode in order to restore the device since the update did not complete. This article explains how to do that.

    3) Log In (using key chain or by apple script inputing the user name and password or asking me for dialog box
    4)click a certain link somewhere on the page that will pop up the streaming quotes section
    5) minimize all safari windows expect the one that is streaming the quotes
    6) keep clicking a link that refreshes every half hour the account page so it dosent log me out
    should be doable right? Any tips for a first time user for apple script? I read some of what it can do and how its done, (iv programmed with C++ and visual basic) and apple script seems to be really simple, however I dont want to under or over estimate its abbilites.

    Good, and I can see that we are thinking along the same lines with regards to other applications for it.
    I am a little confused as to why you had to comment out the "on run". I set this script up so that you can already run it as an AppleScript or an Automator action. The "on run" and "end run" pairing are assumed in simple AppleScripts that only have a single routine but, in my opinion, should really be included for good programming style.
    Run as AppleScript
    Compile, save and run as it is without commenting out anything. You can add further calls to activities, like you mentioned, in the main "on run" routine, and the required GUI commands with other subroutines.
    Within the main "on run" routine is where you could call subroutines that would open up other windows or tabs with other sites using Safari, other browsers, and other net applications such as RSS readers, Internet radio, etc.
    Run as Automator action
    You are right that there are currently a limited selection of actions available with which to build a workflow. However, Apple did leave enough flexibility through actions with calls to AppleScript ("Run AppleScript"), a Unix Shell script ("Run Shell Script"), run other Automator workflows ("Run Workflow")and, Web Services ("Run Web Service") to provide extensibility to the application. Of course there is also a tremendous flexibility within Unix itself with all the scripting and full programming languages that can be run through the Shell.
    Long winded today!
    Here is what needs to be done to run this as an Automator action.
    1) Open Automator and look for an action called "Run AppleScript" which is within the "Automator" category of actions.
    2) Drag it over to the workflow assembly line. You will notice it contains the core of an AppleScript main routine.
    3) Normally when you are building these routines you build them within this environment and test them there and only replace the text labelled "(* Your script goes here *)". However, in our case it was build in the AppleScript Script Editor environment and because the Properties section must go at the top we need to modify its structure for it to run properly and fit into a workflow that consists of more than this one action. So here is what you need to do:
    a) Go to Script Editor and either delete the line entirely or comment out the line by putting the "--" characters in front of the "on run {}" line. I usually just comment the line out so that if I need to work with it in AppleScript again it is easy to do.
    b) Remove the comment characters from "on run {input,parameters}" and "return input". These lines are required to accept and pass on info within the workflow.
    c) Select all of the text in the script and copy it to the clipboard.
    d) Move over to Automator, select all of the text in the "Run AppleScript" action, and paste in the new script.
    It should now compile if you press the hammer icon and run if you press either the green arrow icon on the action or the overall workflow run icon.
    You now have the option of saving it as:
    1) Basic Workflow, requiring Automator to be running
    2) Application, free of Automator running
    3) Various plug-ins including one for iCal alarms which you could use for your automated morning download. Search for plug-ins in the Help of Automator for more information.
    Once it is saved as an alarm you just need to set up a schedule for running it in iCal, attach the alarm by using the "Open File" alarm, and watch the action.
    The AppleScript can also be run with an alarm in iCal. In that case you attach the alarm using the "Run Script" alarm.

    I have Internet through my router...I just can't set it up to be secured because I need a computer to install the disc that came with it....i don't have a computer right now....I was just trying to see if I could set it up to be secured using my iPad2.     Ehmm... okay, after reviewing I understand what is going on. Some of the pictures are taken by the front facing camera and the back-facing camera is just not very good... It seems everything is good I am sorry for asking this stupid question, I should've investigated things further.

  • Is this reception thing a fault, or just a disadvantage of perfect design?

    I am wanting to buy the phone4, but I am currently a little put off. What is the deal with the antenna? from the manufacturer view there is nothing wrong with the phone and I have seen no announcement to state otherwise. From an owner view it seems to be mixed opinion, a fault, a minor issue, or a trivial one. With resolutions ranging from waiting for updates, buying extra bits, or just holding it differently.
    Apparently the 3gs which now works with os4? has the same reception problem, so is it software related?? if so why do applepeeps not confirm this, as £499 is to much of an outlay for it to be hardware related.

    No one can decide for you but I had a 3g for 17 months will signal faults and drop call like every other cell phone before it. My iphone 4 performs at least as well and even better on processor speed than any other I've had. I always kept all phones, including this one in a case. Sure it's pretty, but it's also made of glass. There's a reason they don't let you bring glass to the pool. Would you really want to carry a glass phone in your pocket unprotected?
