  • This is going to sound stupid, but how do I move the gnome3 dock?

I would Like to use the one from gnome-shell-extension-dock, but I can't for the life of me move the original one or remove it for that matter.
How do I go about doing this. This is the first time I've actually been able to get Gnome 3 and Gnome-shell working decently without breaking my themes (Apparently Adawaita uses the same general colors as the GTK2 theme it uses does, so I just copied the gtk3.0 and metacity-1 folders from said theme into all my Murrina themes and now everything looks good)
Also, sometimes Gnome-shell crashes just out of the blue, or at least the window manager does. I can't figure out why it does this, but I suspect it might be because compiz-fusion-icon keeps loading.
EDIT: I seem to have fixed the sound issues with my headphones by switching it over to analog stereo duplex when I'm running shell.

Don't believe so. You can always install Docky or Avant Window Navigator if you like. I liked Gnome3 for a while but got sick of repeatedly moving my mouse up to the corner to make stuff I commonly use visible. I hated the way workspaces are done too. Not sure why they made these decisions but for better or worse they are here. I've moved on to KDE and Openbox where I actually have some control over things.
I liked Gnome3 for a while, I have to admit. In the end I was just too restricted. Lot's of extensions for it coming out though which might help with this stuff. You could just get rid of gnome-shell though and use another dock of your choice.
That's the problem though, I think I'm actually beginning to like old g-shell. Funny as I used to bash the you know what out of it, but once you find some workarounds and make stuff look good, it's not all that bad.
Oh and I found out what kept crashing Gnome Shell..it was when I was switching themes, but only with certain ones. Deleted those and now it works.
....And now my dock seems to display correctly again -.- . Seems it only happens when I boot gnome-shell initially.
It's probably going to be one of those odd quirks I'll just have to live with until Gnome-shell is patched or updated to allow resizing and moving.

If your Mac is running OS X 10.7.5 or higher, you first have to go to System Preferences>iCloud, sign in with your Apple ID to create your account, then check Mail.  This will automatically add an iCloud email account.
To transfer your AOL mail, you need to drag and drop them into the same folder in the iCloud account.  If you have any folders in your AOL mail, you would need to create folders by the same name in the iCloud account, then open each folder, select all the mail in the folder and drag and drop them on the folder by the same name in your iCloud account.  (To create a folder in the iCloud account, click the "+" at the bottom of your folder list, choose Create Mailbox, choose iCloud as the location and give it a name.)

This is going to sound dumb but I just got a call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft Windows tech dept. Apparently something malicious attacking my computer.  I hung up because Mac doesn't use Microsoft Window Operating System - right?  I have Mac OS X.  I have loaded Microsoft Office 2011.  Can that allow something malicious or is this guy a scammer and I was right to hang up???

Actually you can install Windows on your MBP via Bootcamp.
You should have kept the individual on the phone for as long as you can tolerate.  The time he wastes with you is time he cannot spend scamming an innocent victim.
You can always politely ask the caller to hold while you 'answer the front door' or the like and just set down the phone and go about your business.  The caller will eventually hang up.
But your analysis was 100% correct.
    Ciao.

  • This is going to sound silly *REAL THREAD*

First off, I work on a military base. I have been looking into an iPhone for a while, but I have 1 problem with it. It has a camera. We are not allowed to have camera phones on this property.
So, has anyone ever removed a camera from an iPhone? If so, how hard is it?
    Message was edited by: Goobalicious

well I will say that sending it in to have the camera removed will probably void your support for the product.....
but im pretty sure that smashing the camera would do the same thing.
The iphone is like any other device it can have its problems. It can break completely to the point you have to get a replacement It can freeze up does it happen to everyone "no" but can it happen sure... so basically with you doing something like this your going to rely on the company your sending into for support on it....
Something you might wanna do is call apple support and find out if they would cover you for this specific situation... I don't see why they would want to limit there customers over something like this which is required for you to do.
If I had the choice I personally would rather find an alternative ... that comes with exactly what I need it to be.
This may not be your case but just my opinion =)

  • This is going to sound stupid but HELLLPPP ME. :(

so, my computer got that trojan virus and my mother decided to pretty much refresh my whole computer by using some anti-virus download which deleted everything that the computer did not come with, this included my itunes and all the music that was in my library, i still have all of the songs on my ipod, i've downloaded itunes again, but i dont know how to get all my music from my ipod to the itunes i've recently downloaded, i dont want to lose the songs i've purchased and i dont want to have to take each cd that i own and re-import the songs to itunes...IM FREAKING OUT HERE it took me months to get all my music added to my ipod...and im in DIRE need of help. pleasseeee??? does anyone know what i can do???

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • I know this is going to sound lame but...

I just got my grandparents to buy a Mac Mini, their first Apple computer. They had an ancient pc so they were still using dial-up. They want to continue using dial-up since they don't use the internet all that much but still want email. Since I can't convince them otherwise, is there an adaptor that will make a dial-up phone signal go into the ethernet port? Please tell me there is!

No, there isn't. But there's this:

Easily connect to the Internet using your dial-up service with the Apple USB Modem. Small and light, it connects to the USB port on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini or Power Mac G5.

  • This is going to sound silly I know but how do I move apps around ? I have spaces on earlier pages that I want to fill but can't get them back there.

    Thanks

Press and hold one of the apps and after a couple of seconds or so they should start to shake. You can then drag the apps around the screen (don't drag too quickly though). To move them to a different screen drag them so that they overhang the edge of the screen - the display should then change (after a couple of seconds) to the previous/next screen, depending on which edge you're holding the app. When you've finished re-arranging them press the home button so as to stop the apps shaking.
You can also re-arrange the apps via the device's Apps tab when connected to your computer's iTunes (whih some people find easier).

  • This is going to sound weird, but...

My cheek has been making calls while I'm on the phone talking to someone else! Several times I'll be talking and all of a sudden I hear the dial tone, I look at the phone to see that I'm suddently dialing someone from my address book and the other call is now on hold!
I've tried not holding the phone so close to my ear but then I can't hear very well. I do have a bluetooth but only use that when I'm driving...anyone else have this problem? My cheek has even ended a call by accident!

Thanks for the picture..I can see my sensor. It doesn't look like my case/skin is covering it, but I'm going to keep it skin free and test it out before I buy something else.
iron9iant: I looked at the iSkin Revo, it's nice. Have you tried the Revo clip, does it work ok? My current clip that came with my skin doesn't work as well..the phone has popped out several times.

  • This may sound silly but can anyone tell me if facetime is done through wifii or is it charged as a long distance from canada to us

this may sound silly but can anywone tell be if facetime is wifi or a long distance charge?

FaceTime is NEVER charged. It is basically going through the internet, as if you were watching a YouTube video, it just takes data. You probably have a data limit through your wireless provider, for example, I can only use 3Gb of data per month on my iPhone 5 through AT&T.
If you use Wi-Fi, you will NOT be charged for data (unless your internet provider has a cap on the amount of data you can use).
If you do facetime over cellular data, you just have to watch your data usage. You can watch your data usage in Settings > General > Usage. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all offer free apps you can use to monitor your data usage (among many other things, like pay your wireless bill, etc.).

  • This is going to sound really ridiculous but, what is an "interactive" PDF?  I received a PDF from an organization which stated it was furnishing an "interactive PDF" but on which I am not even able to highlight or make comments.

This is going to sound really ridiculous but, what is an "interactive" PDF?
I received a PDF from an organization which stated it was furnishing an "interactive PDF" but on which I am not even able to highlight or make comments.

Well turned out it is secured, but if you can't even highlight points, can you still refer to it as "interactive?"
The problem was that they furnished both a book and a PDF file which are identical and I am unable to understand the point. I would refer to the PDF as  "flat" or "static" rather than "interactive."   It seems redundant and I find the description misleading.  It's also remarkably wasteful.
(Also, visualize the levels of efficiency between 1) scrolling through a PDF, highlighting certain points, and keyboarding comments vs 2) turning pages in a book, picking up a pen to highlight areas, and getting out the pen and paper to handwrite comments.)
Thanks so much for taking the time.

  • This may sound silly but where do i find my attachments after i download them

may sound silly but where do i find my attachments after i download them

What attachments are you talking about? Do you mean the files and or photos you receive in emails?
Mail loads the attachments and they should appear in the body of the email. Some can be viewed by tapping on them. If you have a compatible app you can save them to the appropriate app. An example might be a Word document. If you have an app that edits Word docs like Pages or some other app, tapping on the attachment will bring up a choice to open in Pages.

  • What kind of mac would I need for Nexflix, basic search and email? Also, sounds silly, but can I connect an HDMI from Mac to tv?

What kind of mac would I need for Nexflix, basic search and email? Also, sounds silly, but can I connect an HDMI from Mac to tv?

Just an FYI.  The Macs named PowerMac date from early 2006 and before.  Use this tip to discover where to post once you get your Mac:
Site map of Communities and Categories
The cheapest Mac available new is a Mac Mini.   It is no bigger than many an external hard drive.  But the screen and keyboard and mouse must be purchased separately.  They support USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and pretty much any DVI, HDMI, or displayport display.   Although the iMac is certainly an attractive option if all you want to deal with is deciding on a printer.   I still recommend getting an Apple USB keyboard for the occasional times you may need to troubleshoot startup issues.  Normally not a problem, but as it gets older some issues can be fixed at startup or diagnosed at startup.

  • I want to plug my apple tv into a projector but i want to break the sound out and plug this in to a sperate audio solution which has 2 phono's. Is there a lead that does this?

I want to plg my apple tv in to a projector but i want to break the sound out to a seperate audio solution. Is there a lead that I can use? The sound system has 2 x phono connections?

The sound can already be "broken out" by using the optiocal cable jack. That, of course, assumes your audio input is capable of optical inputs. If not, you might have alook into something like this: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=opt ical+to+rca+converter&tbm=shop
