This is in response to: My old computer died. How do I add new songs to my iPhone using a "new" library?

It won't let me reply to you for some reason.
1. Go into Itunes. Go to preferences. Go to advanced. Check 'Keep Itunes media folder organized' and 'Copy folders to itunes media folder when adding libraries'. Press Okay.
2.Hook up Iphone to computer without Itunes running so it runs as a external harddrive. Go into computer and click on your iphone folder so it goes into it and you can see different folders. There is a button on the top left corner of the window that says 'Organize'. Click on it and go down to folder and search options. Click on 'View' tab. Go down and check on where it says 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives'. Click apply, click okay. Now you will see some extra folders in there. One will be you itunes music folder. Go into it and there will be many folders labeled 0 to 40 something. When you got into one of these folders all the files will be labeled with weird 4 letter and number sequences. You need to go into each of these folders and drag and drop all these files into wherever you want them "music folder? It doesn't matter" It will take a little while and after you have done that disconnect you phone and open itunes.
3. Go to 'Add file to library' then highlight all the hundreds or however many you have files, then click 'okay'. Itunes will now import all the weirdly labeled files and turn them into real songs.
4. Hook up your phone and sync. You can now delete all those numbered files, to make space if you want to.

Restore computer from backup, then you shall have same iTunes library ID and be able to sync.
No backup? This is worse, your options include:
- If your music was bought from iTunes, this is no worry. iTunes will fetch them from cloud.
- If you ripped your CDs, you'd need to re-rip them.
- If you downloaded your music elsewhere, you'd need to repeat the process.
If you must grab remaining music off your iPhone, there are some paid software tools exist to do this.
You may have a  look at trying Ubuntu that used to have some tricks to do that (free). Just run a live CD or off USB stick, do not install.

  • My computer died and I need to transfer all contacts from iPhone to a new computer....how do I do this?

How do I sync iPhone to a new computer and not lose all contacts on the phone. The old computer does not work and I Can't sync with it.

Enter one contact in the supported address book app on the new or different computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select. Syncing contacts with a supported address book app on the computer is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

  • Old computer died, how do I get songs to new computer?  HELP!!

My old computer's hard drive died. I am trying to hook my iPod up to my new computer to get my music onto the new computer's iTunes. The directions in the Applie help section don't work b/c they assume I can use my old computer to help with the transition. How do I do this without losing all my music?

    Try one of these;
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), there's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer.
The above methods may depend on what version of iTunes you are running.
If none of these methods work, try CopyPod.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

  • Old computer died, how do I syncronize w/ a new computer?

I had my IPOD Nano synced w/ my old computer. That computer died. I have all my music still on my IPOD. I have tried hooking my IPOD up to my new computer, but it doesn't see any of my old music.
I have read several of the articles on the apple website that talk about moving songs to your new computer by changing your IPOD into Manual mode (versus Automatic), but the instructions require you to have access to your old computer. I don't have that access anymore. I would like to be able to add more new music using my new computer, but not to lose what is already on my IPOD.
    Any thoughts?

    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2).
There's also another method. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.

  • My old computer died, how do I transfer stuff from my iTouch to computer?

My computer died, so I got a new one. I have a whole bunch of apps that weren't free and I can't afford to repay for all of them. It really annoys me how iTunes didn't give an option to sync the ipod to the computer, especially for situations like these. My music was all from CD's, so I'm not worried about that, but the apps. I don't know what to do.

  • My old laptop died, how do I get my songs back?

    Hey!
So recently my laptop died and it's going to cost $250 to fix it and I don't wanna be paying that much if I just want to get my iTunes library back. I only have some of my songs on my iPhone and I need to get my songs back since I have over 3,000 on the laptop.
You may say to download all your purchases, but I've put CDS on and I don't have them all, so how do I do this?

Depending on the nature of the failure of your old computer you (or a helpful friend) may be able to extract the hard drive from it, put it in an external drive bay and recover your iTunes library and other personal data from it.
Otherwise see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • I just got a new computer and downloaded itunes.  How do i get my songs from my iphone onto my new computer?

I just got a new laptop and want to transfer my music library on my iphone to my computer.  I have downloaded itunes and authorized the new computer.  When I tried to sync my music it said it would erase my phone and replace it with my new itunes library (nothing in other words)

Transfer your library from your old computer. If that isn't possible then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • My old computer died, how to use my iPod on my new computer?

Is there a support link that tells me what steps to go through to set up my iPod with my new PC. When I try to just authorize it on my new PC, iTunes wants to delete everything on my iPod. But, I want to keep everything there, and have iTunes repopulated with my old purchases, and then I'll import my mp3 library for my songs that I brought in from my CDs. Any pointers to the right procedure to use?

*There's no way to connect my iPod to my new computer without losing the mp3s that I ripped before from my CDs.*
If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
