This is just laughable

I've been using iphone 3G for almost a year now. I've been terribly disappointed in the AT&T service as it doesn't work in the two places where I spend the most time, home and work. Home is worse, being that I live in a major metro area and whenever I turn on my street the calls immediately drop. When I'm at home my iphone doesn't ring, I will just get 4 or 5 voicemail messages 30 minutes later. I've contacted AT&T, I've called, I've emailed. they tell me when they look on their coverage map I'm in a "medium" coverage area. I've gotten nowhere with them.
On top of this, ever since the 3.0 upgrade, my iphone has been running extremely hot when I use it. I generally use it with a Jawbone bluetooth headset in the car and when I'm at home I put the phone by the window in my living room (it's really the only way I can make calls). Whenever I use it with bluetooth, the phone refuses to charge. It either gives me the "fully charged" indicator or toggles between charging between fully charged and charging at a rapid rate... very annoying. I usually just have to let the phone die and cool off before I can charge it. Per the Apple Boards, I've deactivated Push notifications, I've wiped 3.0 off the iphone and re-downloaded it and installed in clean (losing 10 years of contacts in the process). Nothing works. Today I made an appointment at the Genius Bar and took it to the Apple store. The kid behind the Genius Bar hooked it up to the his Mac and ran diagnostics on it, and said he can't find anything wrong with it. I told him I have seen similar issues on the Apple Boards, and asked him if he has heard of this or had anyone else come in with it. He says "No". Then he stuck a pen light in the headphone jack and said that the water damage indicator was reading positive. I have never had this iphone near water except possibly on the bathroom counter while I was in the shower, or possibly holding it while running through the rain. I was informed that my Warranty is voided and that my Apple care plan is useless. So I just threw $70 down the toilet for that.
My questions are as follows:
1. Is Apple in denial about "buggy" 3.0 software and battery problems? I look on the boards (and in the news) and I see a lot of posts about battery problems and sluggish iphone behavior.
2. Why is the iphone the only mobile phone I have ever seen that puts a water damage indicator in an open port? I have only ever seen them behind the battery. Is it not possible that water damage could come from natural humidity or moisture?
I'm done with AT&T, I'm done with iphone.

You are done with the iPhone and AT&T, you already said so, so why should anyone waste their time with an answer to your questions?
I would suggest that you do some research and find out which service, i.e. Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, has the best coverage in your area by either using a pre-paid phone or asking your neighbors, co-workers, etc., and then select a phone that best suits your needs on the carrier that has the best signal. This is more prudent than selecting a phone model and then the carrier.
