This is ridiculous - Firefox still CHOKING memory

Firefox is still taking about 90MB at the start even after disabling ALL plugins and 80% of addons/extensions
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== ALL THE TIME

Hi Chris. Apologies for the late reply.
Here are the results. Pls not that there are on as is basis, I no longer have anything disabled since disabling the extensions or plugins was not much different (details in my post above).
<u>'''HOWEVER'''</u> I under the '''Modified Preferences section''' i noticed that some things are wrong:
The 'print.printer_Adobe_PDF' related entries are wrong since I no longer have Adobe installed.
The 'print.printer_Nitro_PDF_Creator" related entries are incorrect since I uninstalled the trial version a long time back
Do you think I'll be better off by uninstalling FireFox and then install it again (which means that I will have to add all the extensions etc. again). Do you think this will solve the problem?

I found a fix for this, not only firefox but several other networking programs were broken as well (Outlook and IE were ok for some reason) so I reasoned that the Norton uninstall was incomplete somehow - I had done it from the add/remove programs in the control panel. Sure enough that's not enough to release Norton's tentacles in your system, there's an uninstall tool on their website (a whole set of them actually) that managed to carve it out completely and after a restart everything was back to normal. My machines will definitely be Norton-free from now on ... N

  • Why does firefox use more memory the longer it's open?

Firefox goes from using 90,000k when first opened to 293,000k after a couple of hours. It didn't used to go up that high. This is just Firefox this doesn't count what plugin container uses. This just started happening where it would get this high. I've not installed any new addons recently. The addons I do have are foxy tunes, adblock plus, Java console, Java quickstarter, move media player 7, Memory fox, Microsoft.net frame work assistance, personas, and yontoon layers. I've tried running in safe mode and disabling all the addons and I've still got the same result. I'm using firefox 3.618.

Sometimes application and programs don't report to the OS that it is no longer using the Ram and therefore the Ram Appears in use. Go to the Mac App Store and download a free Application called Free Memory. It's a useful tool that allows you to free that Ram that is not being used right from the Menu Bar.

  • V15 Beta - still big memory problem ! I FOUND SIMULATE!

    Hi all
(sorry about my english and uppercase :-)
SIMULATE: open the firefox-google-group in eg. 5-10 Tabs on firefox - and your MEMORY GROWS UP TO 1GB (10 Tabs on a iMac) and the Browser gets extremly slow (need kill process)
    https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/mozilla-labs-testpilot
(tested on iMAC OSX10.6, and Windows Vista (the physical-mem-size is diff on windwos) - new installation v15b, std-plugin/adon - nothing changed)
DEAR MOZILLA - where is your problem to solve this ??
you founded a group to solve the leak-problem! WTF you do? nothing - just optimize the extension-memory (you solved in v15b!) BUT NOW SOLVE THE BASIC MEM-PROBLEM!! its ridiculous, on browsers like chrome, safari is NO PROLBEM (check with link above) - and a lots of users have this problem - NOW YOU CAN SIMULATE YOUR PROBLEM. :-(
GO HURRY FF AND WORK ON IT! ITS THE BEST BROWSER

I tried just one window open and Disabled most Plug-ins, etc. and my Memory was at 176,000 Kb - lowest I could get it. When I start up with 7 Tabs, it jumps to 250,000 and stays there or goes as high as 300,000.
Windows Live Mail (Window 7) takes 155,000 Kb so together, they use 3 -4 gigs of my 4 gig RAM memory! By then my computer is so slow that it won't move at all and I have to power it down and re-start it again.
    I'm using Firefox 15.0.1.
So even at 176,000 (lowest I could get it with FF running) that's over a gig.
I had terrible problems with FF version 14 and Adobe, now that's finally fixed but this is worse - destroys my whole computer!

    Hi,
I developed a web application using HTML5-Offline Application Cache mechanism. Inspite of deleting the cache as mentioned in the above steps, Firefox still maintains a copy of the page in it's cache. Also, a serious bug is, even though we delete all temp files used by Firefox, and open the previously cached page, it displays it correctly, but upon refreshing/reloading it again shows the previous version of the page maintained in the cache.

We have had this issue many, many times before including on the latest 3.6 rev. It appears that when the applicationCache has an update triggered by a new manifest file, the browser may still use only its local network cache to check for updates to the files in the manifest, instead of forcing an HTTP request and revalidating both the browser cache and the applicationCache versions of the cached file (seems there is more than one). I have to assume this is a browser bug, as one should not have to frig with server Cache-Control headers and such to get this to work as expected (and even then it still doesn't sometimes).
The only thing that seems to fix the problem is setting network.http.use-cache to false (default is true) in about:config . This helps my case because we only ever run offline (applicationCache driven) apps in the affected browser (our managed mobile apps platform), but it will otherwise slow down your browser experience considerably.

  • When I try to open a PDF file in safari I get a grey page, I don't have this problem in Firefox

When I try to open a PDF file in safari I get a grey page, I don't have this problem in Firefox?

Tried reinstalling Adobe, didn't change anything.I've tried Control click when opening the PDF link, still a blank, grey page.

  • I keep getting a box that pops up that says this is embarrassing firefox has crashed send a report would you like to quit firefox? or restart firefox?

Every time i log into Firefox i get a box that pops up and says, This is embarrassing Firefox seemed to have crashed send a crash report would you like to quit Firefox or restart? then i restart Firefox i go to the website of my choice when i log out that box pops up again so annoying has been going on for days! and right after they updated can anyone please tell me what to do? obviously this is really pathetic that i have to get other peoples solutions instead of Firefox contacting me directly...

Well i tried the Microsoft Malware and everything is fine on this end and you are still crashing on me so with that said,i am giving you one more day to resolve this issue if i still get crashes from you i am sorry to say i will have to try another company as my browser and see if i have an issue with them if i don't,i will not be reinstalling Firefox again if i do,then it may be another issue so i will have to see but i have no Malware here but thank you for your response anyway...

Adobe Acrobat NI Pro doesn't recognize my wireless scanner, a Canon MG5520, but it prints from the same MG5520. This is ridiculous!

I just used the "Quick Menu" in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro after wasting hours several days when the SSID and Network key/password were already activated and the Adobe software claimed no scanner was available. . These Adobe user manuals are next to useless. Now I'm still dealing with this problem: "Save As was unable to find tables in the document No file was created." (i.e., from the pdf file I created using NI). Well it's obvious there are tables in the pdf, but so far I haven't been able to get a result to determine the intrinsic accuracy of Adobe's pdf to Excel capability.

  • [GNOME], [Firefox] (still) defaults to GIMP for PDF files

I've installed Arch Linux with GNOME twice this past year, on both i686 and x86-64 systems. Both times, I've installed GNOME with it's default PDF reader, Evince, as well as GIMP for image editing (of course). Firefox, regardless of my preferences in Nautilus, only gives me the option of opening PDF files in GIMP (as opposed to saving them). If I save the file and open it from the downloads window, it opens in GIMP, but if I download it and then open it directly in Nautilus, then it opens in Evince without any problems. Of course, I could work around this and simply add /usr/bin/evince to the list of programs for PDF files, but I would have to do this for every single user that I add before Firefox is reasonably usable for downloading PDFs.
There was a thread on this a while ago, but it's closed now so I can't add to it. This is still a problem in 2011 and before I report this as a bug anywhere, we'd have to figure out the exact cause of the problem: is it GNOME, GIMP, Firefox, or something else entirely that causes this? How could I fix this so I don't have to use a messy workaround?
Oh, also, after installing GIMP, it's treated as the default application for PDF files regardless of GNOME's default preferences. Evince is listed but GIMP "hijacks" it in a sense. This is fixable in Nautilus easily, but it shouldn't have to be a necessary step.

ngoonee wrote:mimeopen would solve the problem. The issue is that firefox just defaults to using xdg-specifications, and gnome isn't really very good about setting that (uses its own gnome-open instead of xdg-open after all).
I never knew that about GNOME. Mimeopen did fix the problem for me. Thanks very much!

In firefox go to edit>preferences> applications tab (you can choose which app opens what filetypes)
I mentioned that I tried this and it works fine, but I don't want to have to do that workaround on every single account I make. The workaround suggested, as I said, works well enough.
So if I understand this correctly, this is a Firefox bug?

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)  **** Maybe my MacBook Pro is early 2007 ? How do I find that out? ****
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed ***YES
2 GB or more of memory ***YES
8 GB or more of available space ***YES
    Last Modified: Nov 6, 2013

Then your model cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks. That is why you could not download it. You can upgrade to Lion, however.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Mozilla Firefox 5.0 disabled several ad-ons...!!! I want them back. How do I reverse this action Mozilla Firefox 5.0 did? in English

Mozilla Firefox 5.0 disabled several ad-ons when I installed it on my new laptop...!!! I want these ad-ons working. How do I reverse this action Mozilla Firefox 5.0 did to my CPU without warning me?
I've used Mozilla Firefox 4.0 for years on my desktop, and now...problems! Do I need to uninstall the program. Is there a feature to re-enable the disabling that Firefox did without using a Microsoft restore point? Please inform

When Firefox disables an add-on, it usually is because it includes a list of compatible Firefox versions and it hasn't yet been updated for Firefox 5. If it worked on Firefox 4, there is a good chance it will work on Firefox 5, but no guarantee.
You can force Firefox to ''ignore'' add-on version restrictions by (what else) installing an add-on. Then you can test whether the add-ons important to you actually work in Firefox 5.
    [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ Add-on Compatibility Reporter :: Add-ons for Firefox]
After you install this add-on and restart Firefox, there will still be a message that "--- is incompatible with Firefox 5.0" but the add-on will be enabled and a Disable button will appear for that entry.

  • Firefox still read old library file (.js) even if it updated

    Hi support team,
Sometime when i used Firefox to test my site as local host browser.
Firefox did not update my library file even if I saved the document. For the example, when I changed jquery file.js and then I saved it. And after that, I executed the HTML page again, Firefox still read my old code of Jquery. I dont know why but this problem happened many times. I also tested my site in other browsers such as IE and Chrome. And they worked fine, so I assumed that this may be a bug of the firefox. Please be noted that My firefox version is 22.0.
My work around solution is I need to created the new file which may have different and or different location. and then let import the file from the new source instead.
Please kindly let me know, if you have the solution for this case.
    Best Regards,
    Pornpoj H.

Firefox sometimes is a little too aggressive in reusing cached files. You can bypass those by reloading with Ctrl+Shift+r. Does that help with jQuery?

  • Draw on TiledImage as one unified image, still managing memory using tiles

what I am looking for is **exactly** this
    http://www.garayed.com/java/186952-question-about-tiledimage-graphics2d-jai.html
"(...)How do I create an arbitrarily large TiledImage from scratch (lacking a
source image) and draw onto it using the TiledImage's graphics context
    ( TiledImage.createGraphics() ) without causing an
    OutOfMemoryException?
The content of the image would be purely Graphics2D geometry. I don't
need to read in any external images, just to be able to create, and
draw on, very large blank images. I'm assuming that TiledImage is the
most appropriate class for this, but haven't been able to find any
    sample implementations.
There must be some way to draw on a TiledImage as one unified image,
while still managing memory using tiles.(...)"
    any ideas?
    TIA

    great article
my conclusion is that it seems java can't provide a huge graphics environment for drawing in a transparent manner, I think.
    let's suppose I have a huge tiledImage. 20,000 x 20,000 pixels
now I want to draw a huge circle, radius = 10,000, center is the same square center
just an example, to clarify my doubt
when I request a Graphics2D context to draw this circle, tiledImage will intelligently and transparently request the necessary tiles to draw this circle, or I would have to code manually something to grab these tiles, calculate what to draw in each one and manage the tile cache?
    TIA
