This message has not been fully downloaded from the server

When opening an email in Microsoft Outlook 2007, a co-worker’s laptop occasionally receives this message: “This message has not been fully downloaded from the server. Would you like to mark it for download?”.  It’s an IMAP account that syncs with his new iPhone 4S. He never received this message when he had a BlackBerry.
From reading online posts, the problem could be how the iPhone downloads the emails. One suggested resolution was to change when the emails/incoming messages delete from the server; however, my co-worker likes the fact that once he deletes an email from Outlook, it’s deleted from his iPhone and vice versa.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem? Thanks, iPhone newbie

I get that message too.  Its not a bug - its a "feature".  I only get it if the e-mail contains a bunch of graphics etc which makes the e-mail much bigger than a "standard" text only one.  I guess its there so you have the choice to download the rest of it or not.  Saves you money if you are charged for data downloads.

  • "This message has not been downloaded from the server" - Multiple devices all using Exchange Active Sync

We are having this issue across multiple IOS devices ranging from IOS version 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2. Many (not all) emails sent to the devices are unreadable and simply state: "This message has not been downloaded from the server". Microsoft believes this to be some sort of bug with the IOS devices in the way they are handling the SSL encryption.
    Facts:
    - Devices are connected to an Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 6 via Active Sync (No POP3, IMAP or SMTP)
    - issue occurs on multiple IOS devices within the organization ranging from IOS 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2
    - Issue occurs on both external cellular data and internal wireless networks
    - Not all emails sent to the devices result in the error, but issue does tend to occur more frequently from certain senders/domains
    - Using the same user account on an android phone does not result in an issue (even when receiving the exactly same email that has been sent to the IOS devices)
    - Closing mail app / rebooting device does not resolve the issue
    - Doesn't appear to matter what the mesage format is (can be html, plaintext, etc)
    - Spent nearly 7 hours with Microsoft going through the Exchange server configuration and looking for possible causes. None have been found and all testing indicates things are setup correctly.
    - This is not a case of Issue 2.3 listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563324 (verified by Microsoft Support)
    - If we disable SSL on the IOS device and connect via plain HTTP the messages are displayed correctly!
    - If we use a different SSL certificate, the issue still occurs - so not a problem with the original cert.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what would cause this? Does the ISO devices have any sort of log that would indicate why it's reporting this error? The current error is pretty unhelpful.

GFI Have a solution for this problem. It is to do with iOS implementation of reading the message headers when SPF compliance modifications are made by GFI.

  • I updated my iphone 4S with iOS 6.1.3 and now my e-mails say, "This message has not been downloaded from the server".  We have an Exchange server at work.  ??

I updated my iphone 4S with iOS 6.1.3 and now I cannot retreive or send my e-mails.  We have an Exchange server at work.  I still receive the e-mails on all my devices just fine and I can see the subject headings & a small portion of the body of the e-mail, but when I open the e-mails there is no body and it reads, "This message has not been downloaded from the server".  Very aggrevating and is not helping my business at ALL!!  Same has happened with both iPads we own now.

Delete then add back the exchange acct on each device.

  • "This message has not been downloaded from the server"

Hello, Ever since ive had an iPhone and have used Edge to open a resaonably sized email i usually get "This message has not been downloaded from the server". Im sure this has to do with the slow Edge network timing out. How do you correct this if there is no "Download Now" button. The only solution I have found was to force quit the Mail App (Hold Home button for 6 seconds) and go back in and pray that it downloads without timing out.

There was a thread on this yesterday that stated that if there is more message it may take four to five minutes to download the entire message and/or attachments.
One poster even said that it has taken him over 30 minutes in some cases.
I have this same problem on some email and on others the entire email is downloaded, including any attachments. Since there is no communication put out by Apple regarding this anomaly, it is hard to say whether this a an Apple or provider, i.e., Google or Yahoo.

In which case, clearly communicating the intent would have been a better solution.  The steps do apply.  A more appropriate response would have been "tried that, no change".
Regardless of whether they fixed the problem or not, they do apply.
If English is not your native language, I would strongly encourage you to post in your native language going forward.
If basic troubleshooting has not resolved the issue, the next step is to take the device to Apple for evaluation.

  • Occasionally my iPad 2 does not download POP3 emails with the error "This message has not been downloaded from the server"

The error is "This message has not been downloaded from the server". I used to get this sometimes on my iPhone 3G too.  The messages can be downloaded by a PC client or GMail or another type of smartphone. The

My question, which I thought was obvious, was has Apple got a workaround for this obvious error in their IOS email client. It hasn't been fixed and it's about time it was.
The fact that this problem :-
    1. Manifests itself on both iPhone and iPad devices
    2. Does not show up on Windows clients (Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Windows Live Mail, Becky 2)
    3. Does not show up on web clients (GMail, Pobox, Hotmail)
    4. Does not show up on MacOS clients
    5. Does not show up on Android clients (Mail, Touchdown)
Leads to the inevitable conclusion that the problem is not device related (so I agree with you there) but is client / platform (Mail or IOS) related. The fact that more research on this forum shows that this issue has been around since IOS 1.0 days corroborates this conclusion.
I do not agree with you presumption that the issue is with the message, all the evidence above refutes this.
So here I am on the official Apple discussion forum seeking enlightenment and assistance from the combined knowledge of the assembled technorati. And quite frankly your terse, bad tempered message falls way short. If there were an "unhelpful answer" button on your message I would have pushed it.

Not with they limited information you have provided so far. Are you backing up to iCloud or to iTunes on your computer? Do you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer? Was it installed from a Windows or Mac user ID that had administrator privileges? Does the phone show up in iTunes? What is your operating system? Are you using a USB port directly on your computer (not a hub)? If it's a USB port on the computer and you have a desktop or tower computer is the port on the back, not on the front?

  • Why does my mail say this message has not been downloaded by the server

Suddenly the majority of my MSN emails say they are not downloaded by the server on my ipad.  I didn't have this problem before. I have tried rebooting my ipad and also restarting my email but nothing helps.

Hotmail (Outlook) is down for many users today:
    https://status.live.com/

Try accessing Hotmail/Outlook from your Safari browser, rather than the Mail app.

  • Why do I get message "this message has not been downloaded from the server" in iPad mail app

When I turn my iPad on in the evening and it downloads my emails from a work address, gmail, me.com and hotmail it seems to frequently show this message for my hotmail messages. I've tried to search for a solution but links are going nowhere. All other accounts work fine.

was the entire message missing? or did that message have an attachment that was not downloaded?
iphone doesnt appear to download any attachments or remaining parts of large messages unless you ask it to get the rest for you. saves on download times I would imagine - especially on EDGE.

  • This message has not been sent

I am using Outlook 2007 with MS Exchange mail.  After creating and trying to send an email message, the email goes into "Outbox" but same is not sent.  Sent/Receive status show all folders updated. What do I need to do to
    correct problem?

    Hi,
There may be many causes that make sent emails stuck in Outbox.
    1. We can start Outlook in Safe Mode, then send the emails to check if the problem persists. If there's no problem sending emails in Safe Mode, the problem may be caused by some add-ins, disable the suspicious add-ins to verify which one caused the problem.
To Start Outlook in Safe Mode, press Win + R, type "outlook.exe /safe" in the blank box, press Enter.
    2. Another possibility is the SRS file is corrupt. Outlook saves your Send and Receive customizations in a file with the extension *.SRS. If this file is corrupt, the Send & Receive Settings dialog won’t open and you may receive send & receive errors.
Copy and paste %appdata%\microsoft\outlook in the address bar of Windows Explorer, then press Enter, you can find the .srs file, rename it to ".old" and start Outlook. Outlook will generate a new one to replace the
missing one, send emails again to check the result.
    3. The firewall and anti-virus settings may also stop emails from being sent, disable them temporarily then send emails to check the result.
    4. If possible, try to send emails in another network environment. In some unstable wireless environment Outlook may not send emails successfully, if sending emails in another network works, please consider to check the network status.

  • This message has not downloaded from the server is displayed on iPhone and iPad what can I do to retrieve message

'This message has not been  downloaded from the server '. What can I do to retrieve this message ?

    No fix, but I found a work-around at http://www.bitcraft.com.au/iphone-mail-app-says-this-message-has-not-been-downlo aded-from-server/
    that reads:
...here’s a quick fix… Forward the message. Just click Forward and it will ask you “Download rest of message first?”. Say yes and then you will see the old message quoted in the forward. Now if only Apple would make than an option without having to ‘fake’ forward it…
The above worked for me when I encountered "This message has not been downloaded from server” on my iPad 3 running iOS 7.1.1.

  • Searched email showing "The message has not been downloading from the server."

I have Exchange email setup on my iPad. When I search for an email that has a large attachment (15mb PDF) the results show two identical emails. If I click on the first one it says "This message has not been downloaded from the server." The second email seems to open correctly. Closing the Mail app and opening back up doesn't fix the issue. Neither does rebooting iPad. Anyone have any idea why the search is showing multiple emails and why they won't download correctly?
    --Brian

I am the IT department. Seems to be an issue with the search showing the email locally and server side, so it shows up twice. If I open the email that is server side, it has an issue opening the email again unless I try several times. I'm working with Apple now so hopefully they can help.

  • This message was not downloaded from the server

I have purchased a iphone the first week they were introduced. My problem is with pop email. I keep getting the message " this message has not been downloaded from the server" when I open a email with a lot of html graphics. After reloading the email many times I am able to get the email. Sometimes it takes only 2 times but sometimes it take 20 times. This has been happening since the first day I got the iphone. I thought it was because of a slow connection but it also happens on wifi. I thought apple would fix this problem eventually. But I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon. I have seen this problem being reported on this forum and is apparently quite widespread. I have also reported to apple in there feedback section. No response yet. There is a work around to forward pop email account to an imap account. I don't consider this a solution. Does anyone have any other solutions?

    (1) Why does it happen?
The short answer is "I am not 100% sure why, and Apple have not said why!", but all I can really do now is to google it, and make up my own mind!
My Guess: I don't think that the Mail application on the iPhone actually saves any attachments on the iPhone when you download emails! It saves the body of the email, but NOT the attachments.
Why? Because if you attempt to browse an older email, which has an attachment, it gives you the message "Loading..." and after a couple of seconds it tells you "This message has not been downloaded from the server". BUT: If you attempt to do the same thing, with WiFi & EDGE turned OFF, then the Mail application will display the email body immediately, and give you a link to the attachments, that you can click on to download.
Basically it proves that the iPhone does not save attachments on the iPhone, only the email body!
    (2) Can you fix this?
Well, this normally happens when you collect your email on your iPhone using the POP protocol!
Most of us download our email onto computers and select the option in Outlook/Outlook Express to "leave the email on the server for x days", typically 5 or 10 (which I do) days. We then setup our iPhones to download the same email, but to LEAVE it on the server - or "Delete from server: Never".
This means that for 10 days your iPhone will be able to access a specific email on the email server, and will be able to download (view) that attachment whenever you want.
BUT: AFTER this 10 day period your computer will remove that specific email from the mail server, and then your iPhone will not be able to retrieve it from the server. Which also means that you will not be able to read any attachments from the mail server.
SO, when your iPhone Mail app tries to download THAT attachment, it will not be able to, and INSTEAD of just displaying the email body, and the attachment link, it displays the error message: "This message has not been downloaded from the server"...
    (3) Why does the iPhone NOT just save the attachment on the iPhone?
I have NO idea! Apple should definitely speak out about this and come up with a fix!
    (4) Why Apple does NOT save the attachment? (My guess)
Well, if you are constantly re-downloading any attachment that you attempt to view on your iPhone, then you will constantly be downloading data using your EDGE package! AND your Mobile Service Provider CHARGES you a massive rate (per MB) to download data using EDGE! Which means that they (AT&T / MTN / Orange / whatever) are making loads of cash off you re-downloading your email attachments. Is this right?
    (5) Quick Fix?
Change the settings on your computer so that it leaves the email on the server for an extended period of time! Change the 3 days, or 10 days to something like 30 days! This means that your iPhone will be able to re-download the attachment for a 30 day period after it has initially downloaded the email.
BUT you are STILL re-downloading the attachment, and while you are waiting, YES, WAITING.... you are still being charged for the data traffic!
The problem here is that some service providers only give you a 10MB email account on their server. This might not be enough for users who receive 100's of emails on a weekly basis!
    (6) Longer Fix?
Change your email account from a POP account to an IMAP account.
Problem #1: Here again is that not all service providers offer IMAP facilities! Also, the emails would reside on your server.
Problem #2: You are still re-downloading all those attachments again! $$$
    (7) The REAL solution?
The real solution needs to come from Apple! They need to increase the size of the first partition on the iPhone that you save your emails in. Maybe they need to save attachments in the second (media) partition so that you can always access them? At the moment the first partition on the iPhone is really small, just big enough for the OS and a few applications, never mind 100's of attached pictures and mp3s, etc that we commonly send around cyberspace!

  • "...not downloaded from the server."  ???

I open an email on my iPhone that has an attachment 'clip' but when it opens there is a message that says, "This message has not been downloaded from the server." They are Word documents, etc., so they should be downloadable. What do I need to do or change to get the attachments to download???

I can only tell you my experience with the same problem using Comcast and Outlook. Because the email is downloaded to my desktop at the same time as my iphone, I get the same message. All I did was go to Outlook on my desktop to: Tools/email accounts/view or change existing email account/next/change/more settings/advanced/delivery/*remove from server after _ days. By extending the days, the email/attachment stays on the server and therefore opens on my iphone. I did this a few days ago and it seems to be working. Good luck!
