This morning when I opened iTunes, I noticed

This morning when I opened iTunes, I noticed my Purchse folder was empty, which it should not have been. I checked my Account page, and under Purchase History only songs bought in the past few days show up.
I have been buying from iTunes since early 2003, so I had quite a list going.
Why would they erase that info, and can I get it back?
My account name/preferences and everything else is exactly the same as always.
iPod 20 GB and iTunes 5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sounds like the itunes database file got corrupted. It's stored in a file named
iTunes Library.itl
The actual music files should still be there. You can import them back into itunes.
My advice is to make weekly backups of that ITL file, so you can get it back if something like this happens again.

Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu bar). Choose "General". Click "Always close windows when quitting an application".
That should fix it.

The instructions to me to open my itunes and go to Store then choose "Authorize this computor" or if using an older version of itunes to go to the Advanced menu. They did not mean the Store; they meant the Store menu on the iTunes menu bar! It is in a row with File, Edit, View, Controls, Store, and Help, as shown below.
If you don't see the menu bar, enable it by holding the CTRL key and pressing B.

I have not used iTunes for several weeks so the issue may not be related to the last Windows XP automatic upgrade. I have never had problems with iTunes in the past. Is this a real message or perhaps a virus?

Let's try a repair install of iTunes.
Restart the PC first.
If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", and click "Change". Select "Repair" and click "Next" as per the following screenshot:

Taken at face value, you're having trouble with an Apple Application Support program file there. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)
Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. Now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Application Support" and then click "Repair".
Does iTunes launch properly now?
If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post:

Download iTunes 11 from the Apple site and reinstall. The error message was quite plain in telling you what to do to resolve the error.
