"This movie cannot be played..." on my iMac

I am getting the HDCP display error on a purchased iTunes tv show on my new iMac. I do not have an external monitor attached and never have. I am simply trying to watch the HD version on my iMac.
Thoughts?

Well, glad to see I'm not alone with this issue. It is strange that it isn't more prevalent but I guess that has to do with the combination of things involved.
I've had no real luck finding out more, Apple simply gave me another download for the film I had rented without really offering any more insight as to what exactly causes the problem.
Summing things up it looks like everyone has the same scenario:
iTunes stored on a NAS (network disk)
Started to play a movie (or movie rental) before the download had completed.
I think you are on the right track scratch009, it is most certainly a DRM issue probably caused by the file transfer to the network disk. Probably irreversible considering the point of DRM to begin with.
The only two workarounds to avoid this that I can see are:
Let the film completely download before viewing.
Temporarily change the library location to somewhere on the local disk - and then move it later. That will ensure that you don't encounter issues with movies you've purchased as well.
Thanks for the replies, hopefully we can at least bring enough attention to this that others are able to avoid the issue in the future.

  • When playing a video I have downloaded from iTunes I get the message "This Movie Cannot be played on this machine"

When playing a video I have downloaded from iTunes I get the message "This Movie Cannot be played on this machine".  The weird thing is that I downloaded the film from iTunes and while it was downloading I was watching it with my kids on my IMac. Once it had finished downloading I went with them to the living room Tao carry on watching on our apple tv.  The apple TV wouldn't play it and said I needed to authorise my Pc, then the IMac gave the message above and I haven't been able to play it since.  All my other downloaded films play.  I am running iTunes version 10.2.2. And my iMac is Running Snow Leopard OS 10.6.7.  Anyone who can shed some light on this weird situation will have my upmost thanks

    Hi,
I have the same problem. Been trying to find some answers, but not a lot of info about this. It seems to happen only when:
    - itunes library is stored remote (NAS or external HD)
    - starting a movie/show before download has finished will make it fail next time you try to start
Hope this gets fixed soon.. it's making purchasing content via itunes a hassle

  • Bought TV series - some shows "This movie cannot be played on this machine"

I bought yesterday a TV series with 5 episodes. My boys started watching while it was still downloading and have seen the first 3 episodes (out of 5). However, now the first two episodes cannot be played again.
In iTunes I get a message: "This movie cannot be played on this machine"
When I locate the files in Finder and try to play in QuickTime, I get a message: "QuickTime Player is not authorized to play “(null)”."
All episodes seem to have downloaded completely (there are no open downloads in iTunes). Also the file sizes seem ok (first 2 episodes not working: 158.3MB, and 160MB, vs other 3 episodes working fine: 164.3MB 164.1MB, and 158.4MB.
Any ideas what can be the problem? And what can be done to sort it?

Same problem here. Accessing my iTunes library from a remote shared drive. This problem has started becoming more and more problematic recently. I've been able to pause and restart, but sometimes it just starts complaining that the "movie can't be played on this machine" and that's it. I'm not sure what I need to do.
You comment gave me the idea of moving my iTunes directory to my own Time Capsule drive, but now that you say the problem happens there, too... ugh.

  • HD Movie won't play after downloading. When hit play, this pops up: "This movie cannot be played on this computer"

I have a Macbook Pro 13inch with retina display with a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, with a 250 GB storage capacity, which 30 GB is still available. Its OS X 10.9.4 version.
I recently purchased Divergent in HD in the Itunes store. I downloaded it, but when I hit play, a message appears that says "This cannot be played on this computer." I have authorized my computer so that is not the issue. Any thoughts?

You might want to try it again.  It started working for me about 10 minutes ago (~8pm CST).
This was happening for rentals and purchases.

  • "This movie cannot be played on this computer."

I was watching the movie with no problems and then Itunes froze. When I tried to restart the movie it was nowhere to be found. I had to search for it in Windows and located the movie in its downloaded folder. I tried contacting support regarding this issue and was asked for a serial number which I do not have because i do not own a Mac. I just want to be able to watch the film that I purchased or get my money back.

I've bought a ton of iTunes movies and never seen this, but perhaps the following will help:
It seems that others with this issue in 2010 had it resolved by redownloading the film from iTunes.

Some people with the issue reported that it happened when trying to play the movie before it had completed downloading when their library is stored on a NAS.

  • "This movie cannot be played" error message on iPod Touch

Hoping someone can help. I have seen similar messages posted but no answers so I thought I would try with a new post.
I bought a Touch over the weekend. I successfully synched my music, contacts, photos and videos that I created in iMovie. Any application or TV show purchased through iTunes would not play.
I have restarted the Mac and the Touch several times. I de-authorised and re-authorised the account. I have restored the Touch 2x. Yes, I upgraded to 3.0 software but I have the 3.0 iPhone version on my iPhone and it works great.
I just finished taking off all applications, restoring the Touch to factory settings and setting it up under a new name. Yet - nothing!!!
Please - does anyone have any ideas? How can I downgrade back to an earlier version of the software?
    Thank you,
    Elizabeth

    Hi Elizabeth,
Try converting the movies in iTunes as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1211
The article also provides a sample file that you can use to convert and sync to the iPhone/iPod touch.

  • ITunes says "this movie cannot be played on an iPhone"

Hello everyone. I've been trying to rip and convert my DVDs into quicktime lately but iTunes has been giving me trouble. I ripped the original, uncompressed .mpg file off the DVD and loaded it into a bunch of different converter programs, but they all reduced the size of the video to 640x360 during the conversion from .mpg to .mp4, thus lowering the quality. After that I decided to try loading the .mpg into Adobe Premiere and setting it to the original size of the video, which in this case was 853x480. I then exported it to .mp4 using the h.264 codec and put it into iTunes. It now had the full quality and size that I wanted, but when I tried to sync my iPhone it gave me a message saying it wouldn't be copied because it isn't playable on an iPhone. So my question is: why are the videos i bought on iTunes that have a frame size of around 853x480 playable on my iPhone but the 853x480 videos i created myself unplayable?

From tech specs of phone about videos.
Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
