This spreadsheet can't be opened

Just gone into Numbers having updated it and loaded Yosemite and now find I can't open one of my most used documents. I keep a copy both on hard drive & on iCloud. The hard drive document will open but not the most up to date version on iCloud. I simply get 'This spreadsheet can't be opened'.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get the spreadsheet back?
Thanks

Hi mgasparino,
It seems that you have tried to open a Numbers '08 document with Numbers version 3.
If you recently updated Numbers to version 3, that did not remove Numbers '08 from your machine.
Look in your Applications folder for a sub-folder called iWork '08.
First, make backup copies of your documents!
Launch (open) Numbers '08 and Menu > File > Open > your document.
In Numbers '08, Export to Excel.
Numbers 3 will open that Excel document.
Numbers 3 will ask you if you want to convert that document to the latest Numbers format.
If you are sure, then upgrade.
To open it, save it with Numbers ’09 first.
Other users in this forum have found ways to download a trial version of Numbers '09, and convert documents from '08 to '09.
Other users in this forum have found ways to purchase, install (and then update) a DVD of iWork '09.
Numbers '08 and Numbers '09 still work, but they are now "orphanware".
See this User Tip on how to work with old and new versions of iWork:
Need newer version of Numbers to open file

  • Spreadsheet can't be opened from iCloud

It will not open on any of my devices (iPhone, iMac, MacBook Pro, or iPad).  I have the latest OS and iWorks installed on all devices.  Seemed to start with a conflict message stating that the file hadn't been sync'd on another device.  I made a selection of which to use (the latest) and then started to get the "Spreadsheet can't be opened" message.  It seems odd that there would be such a conflict since I hadn't accessed the file

Any updates?  I ran into this issue today with Pages, so I restored my iPad from backup.  It did NOT fix the Pages issue.  In fact, it ruined Numbers as well.  Over 50 documents with very important data have been wiped out.  These documents are no longer in iCloud, nor are they accessible from my iPhone anymore.
When these products first came out, I was like "Great! I'll never lose any of my work again!"  Yeah, right...  This one issue has lost more of my work than all of my previous computer problems over the last 20 years combined......

  • This file can't be opened.

I have got a file I have worked on for ages that was on iCLoud and it for corrupted and started saying "This file can't be opened."
So I went back to an earlier version and did the work again saving it on my mac.
    Now it is saying again:
    "This file can't be opened."
    1) Is there any way of salvaging this file?
    2) Given the way apple have made it harder to save incrementally as you work what is making my files corrupted?
    3) The file was a multi sheet spreadsheet. Am I being unrealistic thinking Numbers can handle this?

I suggest backing up the file using Time Machine.
You can also use the menu item "File > Revert To " to see all versions

  • HT1750 Pages, This document can't be opened because it's too old.  To open it, save it with Pages 09 first          still can't open pages document

I recently purchased a new Mac and I am having difficulty opening older Pages documents.
Pages, This document can't be opened because it's too old.  To open it, save it with Pages 09 first          still can't open pages document

Either you have access to Pages ’08 v3, Pages ’09 v4, or neither. One of these older, but more functional versions of Pages can open, and export the document in question to Word. Preview on OS X 10.9.5 and Yosemite can view Pages ’08 documents (in my experience). It is not obvious to me that Preview may be using the installed Pages ’09 v4.3 to assist in opening these '08 documents.
Once opened in Preview, you can select/paste text into Pages v5.2.2, or v5.5. If you want the images from the PDF, then export it from Preview as PDF, and then drag/drop onto latest free LibreOffice icon in the Dock, which will open the PDF for editing. Select, copy, and paste the images into Pages v5, or incorporate into Text boxes, or Shapes. When pasted, images will be in their original size/resolution, not necessarily as small as they appear in the PDF.
If the second paragraph is a chore, then follow Peggy's advice above on the sources for purchase of Pages ’09.
In the future, I would not recommend trusting document architecture to Apple, and use a more accessible format (.doc/x) for better cross-platform access, longevity, and application choice. You may find LibreOffice, or Office for Mac 2011 a better choice for features.

  • This document can't be opened because it's too old.To open it, save it with Pages '09 first.

Bought new MAC desktop tried to open old Ipages and I get this message, what do I do now?
This document can’t be opened because it’s too old.To open it, save it with Pages ’09 first.
    Thanks

If you migrated your old system to the new Mac you should still have Pages '08 in your Applications/iWork folder.
Open your document in Pages '08 and Export it to Word .doc/.docx and open that in Pages 5.

  • Error This message can't be opened

I am running 10.2.0.429 currently.  However, since updating from 10.0, I have been unable to open any Notifications from the Hub.  When I select a notification, the view switches to a new window that says:
    Error
    Date label area
    This message can't be opened
    Any help resolving this error?
    NOTES
I have updated the OS gradually (2 or 3 times now?) from the originally installed OS 10.0.  Getting to the current OS was not a one-step jump.
I used to be able to update my apps directly from the Notification section of the Hub.  Now I get the notification and must go to BlackBerry World to update it, which is much less convenient (and annoying).
This is not a new error, I had hoped that the most recent update would fix the issue.

Not if the error code should be visible on the screen, I am not.
All I see is the blue bar across the top of the window that says "Error" and "Date label area", and then the message area says "This message can't be opened"

  • This file can't be opened because it has been deleted

When I tried to save an Appleworks 6 document by clicking SAVE (drop down menu) and then inputting a file name and then clicking SAVE I get the following message.
"This file can't be opened because it has been deleted."
This problem started yesterday. I also had this problem this morning - but -
I have just tried to replicate the problem and I can't
However, has anybody had this problem before? If you did you solve it, or did it just not happen again?

Although I've only gotten this message when I've had AppleWorks 6 open in both Classic & OS X at the same time, others get it like you with no specific cause. It usually is fixed by using Disk Utility to repair permissions and deleting the AppleWorks 6 preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more on the preferences.

  • This application can't be opened

    Hello.
So I have been playing this game on my macbook pro for almost a year. Today, when I tried opening the app, it says The Application "NAME" can't be opened. I checked my trash but it wasn't deleted. I don't know what to do. Please help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Trying to open Pages '08 files I get "This document can't be opened because it's too old."

I never owned pages '09 and I REALLY need my documents.  This is unacceptable nonsense.  Please tell me I can download a copy of iWork 09 someplace for Mavericks.
    Thanks,

I suggest that you buy a retail copy of iWork '09 from Amazon or eBay & then update to the new iWork apps in the Mac App Store. You might check this link for the iWork '09 trial. I have no idea if it is still available.

  • After updating the last version of NUMBERS on my iphone5 the message "spreadsheet can't be opened" appears when i' trying to open my existing files

    Has anyone an idea?

It's not to do with ios 7. you need to go to the app store on your phone and download the new FREE app for "PAGES" & same for Numbers & Keynote. They do not come preloaded on the iphone. The bottom of this page shows all the free Apple Aps you can download -    https://www.apple.com/ca/iphone-5s/built-in-apps/        starting with iPhoto etc.

  • Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)?

Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)? When I look at the files in FiNader there's a grey bar next to the files that won't open.

I am having the same problem. Created new spreadsheet on iPad with fresh iOS and Numbers installs (3/2015) and am unable to open this spreadsheet in iCloud in Safari on MacBook Air (all current). I get the following message:
    "Sorry, something went wrong.
This spreadsheet can't be opened right now. Please try again later."
Tried reopening on Mac from iCloud and resaving; still cannot open.
Quick fix: Copying the spreadsheet content from the iPad spreadsheet to one created on the desktop recovers the ability to open it in iCloud in Safari.
    Thanks.

  • Error: "Document can't be opened on this machine"

I have two ebooks that I bought from amazon.com in 2003 and 2005 that won't open after reinstalling everything on my laptop. I used my adobe ID to set up Digital Editions, but it gives the error: "This document can't be opened on this machine. Please contact the site where you obtained the document to download another copy."
I contacted amazon.com and they say that they only promised to have the ebook available for download for 60 days.
I sent a message to Adobe support last week about the problem and haven't received a reply yet.
Why would these ebooks be readable for over 5 years and not be readable now? It seems that Adobe's ebook DRM is broken here and I'm not getting a solution from anyone. From what I read on the net, I'm not the only one having this problem with Digital Editions.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I just found this information about ebook usage from the publisher of one of my ebooks that I bought in 2003 from amazon.com that now doesn't open in Digital Editions.
"Usage Rights for Wiley Adobe E-Books
Any Wiley e-book you purchase will come with certain restrictions that allow Wiley to protect the copyrights of its products.   After you purchase this Wiley Adobe E-Book title, you:
May use the provided link to download the file up to 4 times onto different computers. This link is accessible in the My Account section of this website or from the original e-mail.
Must download it within 14 days of purchase
May not move the file to a different computer
May not lend, sell or give the e-book to another user
May not copy the e-book file
May copy/paste anything up to a page of text, 10 pages total, every 7 days
May not copy/paste diagrams, figures, or artwork
    May annotate text in e-book"
The first bullet contains a restriction that limits the use of an ebook to approximately 5 to10 years given the 3 to 5 year life of a PC and the biannual frequency that I've had to reinstall Windows from a reformatted disk to correct problems.
I don't remember being told this in 2003 when I bought the book from amazon.com. If it was added since that that time, then it is a change of our sales agreement and I don't believe that it can be done after the fact.
Basically, I would never have bought an ebook with a life of 5 to 10 years and now that I know that this is the publisher's usage policy I will never buy another Adobe ebook. It the equivalent of buying a printed book with vanishing ink.

  • Why can I not open Numbers documents in iOS

I have a problem with Numbers on iOS and Mac OS X (Mountain Lion (version 10.8.2) that I have seen asked before, but to which I have yet to see an answer. I've been using iWork on iOS devices since it was introduced for the iPad and iPhone, and I use it on a MacBook. Across an iPhone 5, iPad, iPad mini, and the MacBook, I am unable to open numerous documents created last year. The most recent spreadsheets open alright, but the vast majority won't open, generating the error "Spreadsheet can't be opened." I have all the lastest system software updates on all of these machines. It appears it is the same documents that cannot be opened on each of the machines. None of the documents have the "uploading" indicator (up arrow), but some of them have the stock Numbers icon (a bar chart in black and gray), while some have a document preview. It's unclear if this is related, but several of the documents on the iPad mini appear to be in a perpetual state of downloading, with progress bars running through their stock Numbers icon, and never filling up/completing.

  • HT201250 i'm getting message: can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents. and he operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).

I took my computer in to have the Backup restored onto my computer after having a new harddrive put onto my 1year 1/2 old MacBook Pro. When i got it home there was a new User that i had to logout of to getting into my normal user. Don't know why this was, just figured the Mac guys that installed my backup did this for some odd reason. Today i could not open any of my files in the backup on the time machine. All the folder had line going thought them and when i clicked on them I revieved this message: can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents. After talking with that same mac store. I decided to just delete all the files out of the time machine as it was just put back on my computer and i have everything i need. Hours later when i tried to empty the trash i got this messsage: the operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).
Any advise how to fix my problem?
    thanks in advance

While you see a single trash can, in reality there are trash folders on each mounted volume.  I don't use TM but what you are describing implies that a TM drive is no different with the way trash is treated.  So when the TM is unmounted the trash folder on there is gone and thus the trash looks empty.  Remount the drive, the trash folder on it now causes the trashcan to look like something is in it.
If TrashIt! could not remove the file, I'm sorry, you will need to use the terminal.  We can do this one step at a time so you only have to copy/paste the lines into terminal (except the first time).  So launch Terminal (in utilities).  You might want to make the window that is shown a bit larger with the grow box since it's pretty small.
This first line is the only exception to the copy/pasting since you have to enter some information.
    sudo ls -laR /Volumes/your-TM-volume-name/.Trashes
where your-TM-volume-name is the name of your TM volume.  That's the part you have to fill in since I don't know it.
When you hit return the sudo in that command will cause a prompt for your admin password.  Enter it and hit return again.  Note the password will not be shown as you type it.  Post the results so I can tell you what to do next.
Note this ls command is not doing anything but listing the files in the TM's .Trashes folder.  Remember I said each drive has it's own trash folder.  .Trashes is it.
