This thing is becoming a veritable nightmare to me, the MOM !!!!!

Hi there all of you expert pod users, as you can most likely tell, I am the mother of two very proud ipod nano first timers!!! Jolly ol' St. Nick was overly generous this year and had to bring two, which in essence to me, the MOM, means twice the nightmare, twice the problems, and twice the $$$$$$ for the extras involved, okay, now my problem--
When i installed the disk that came with it, everything went ok, surprisingly to myself, who is NOT computer savvy at all. OK, now when we got the itunes lists downloaded or whatever you call it, into the pods themselves, soon after the battery went quite low and we had to "recharge", alright, now there is a small symbol on the pod screen saying "do not disconnect".....our problem is when is it safe to disconnect this thing, and how do you do it properly??? I have read and read and re-read those instructions and have come up with nothing that resembles a symbol such as what they are telling me to find in my "source list" I actually just took the USB port out manually even though it still said "do not disconnect" What is the appropriate manner in which we should be doing this???--can someone please help me, my hair is already slightly graying and I really don't need it to become totally gray over an ipod----please please please help me

Hello Themomofthepodsowners,
The "Do Not Disconnect" and the symbol that you are seeing means that the song/photo files are being transferred or, it is connected to the computer and being charged. If you look in iTunes "Source" window and see the iPod icon flashing, that means that files are being transferred. Once it stops flashing, you can eject the iPod by pressing the eject next to the iPod icon.
For more information on battery status, take a look at this:

I should also mention that for first time use, charge the nano for at least 3 hours or more.
Oh... and since you have more than one nano, take a look at this:

  • Can i set this thing (wrt54g v6) to only allow access to the listed MAC addresses?

    The subject is pretty self-explanatory...
I'm just not sure how to set up the restrictions to allow the listed machines and deny all others.

there is usually an option to "allow" or "deny" ....select the appropriate option.

  • This thing is a nightmare...

I have an all-PC environment: Multiple PCs on a network with a wireless router at the top. I have a Dell laptop that i connect to the network via the WLAN. I want to add the AirPort Express to the network (as a wireless node) and locate it in my audio rack. Simple config. I can't at all config the AirPort. This should be super simple! I have run the Assistant on multiple computers and all it complains about is allowing Windows to manage the wireless network - it is. When I am on the WLAN I can see the AirPort, but the software won't allow it to join the network. Someone please help before I crush this thing...

    Welcome to Discussions kvollrath,
When you are referring to Assistant do you mean Airport v4.2 software for Windows XP?

  • I'm Gonna Toss This Thing -- So Slow

I moved from PC to Mac in January and I have the OSX 10.4 and I'm about ready to spit and toss this thing in the trash. It is so slow for every application, every program, every file, and every time I get on the internet (cable modem), I can't stand it. I've tried the forums and clean up programs and diagnostics and all that stuff. This thing is down to a crawl and I don't know what to do. Not sure how to get support either. I'm about ready to go back to Dell. Please help!!
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

"I find it difficult to find help on this site"
    ween,
Last night I spent two hours reading various Apple articles that were new to me regarding iTunes and iPods. I read those articles not here at Discussions, but at Support.
After two hours of reading, I was able to determine that it may take me quite some time to become either proficient or expert. I read nothing confusing or contradictory, just had to stay focused on the particular products that interested me, as it's easy to go off and start reading something that's "related" but that won't do me any substantial good this early in my learning curve. For instance, there's absolutely no point in learning about iTunes 6 (or 4 or 5, for that matter) when in fact I already have iTunes 7 installed.
To reach Support, click on the purple "Support" tab at the top of this page, then narrow down to your area of interest, where you can view a main Support page for a particular Apple product.
Since you're still new to Mac, you need to review the main Support page for the Intel based iMac and also the main Support page for OS X Tiger (10.4). At this point, you need to stay away from the main Apple sales information areas and from the Apple Store areas, and from the Discussions.
Go through the main Support page and read everything (including tutorials) targeted to the beginner or new user. Ignore the troubleshooting aspects in favor of learning the basics. At this point, you should not be expecting problems, but you should try to take the attitude that your iMac will at some point "just work" and therefore at this time you should be concentrating on how to avoid problems, not how to solve them.
I may get some flack from other posters, some much more learned than me, for suggesting this, but, after you've had nine months of not being able to benefit AT ALL from your new iMac, the only thing that makes sense to me is that you should save all your important files to some location other than your iMac, and entirely erase your iMac and start from scratch. I'd recommend adding nothing to your iMac until you have the basic setup running like greased lightning. I see no point in saving your settings since it's been working so poorly for you until now. Who knows where the problems started?
The install from the original grey-labeled DVDs is simple to perform, whether you choose the "easy" install or "customized" install, and all the software updates are much less daunting when not performed singly, but in the now condensed form that will be offered to you once you've completed the fresh OS install of 10.4.4 from your DVDs.
For example, instead of doing multiple OS X updates, there will only be a single Combo update that will take your iMac from 10.4.4 to 10.4.8. Same thing with most other things, except some of the iLife applications take two software updates to bring them current.
First, however, check that there's nothing wrong with your cable's delivery of internet access. If necessary, pull out the Dell to verify that your cable modem is doing what it should, and that there are no firmware updates available for that particular piece of hardware either from the manufacturer, or from the cable company that may have provided it to you.
You might email them or phone them to be certain. After nine months, another day or two to exchange email about that shouldn't be too bad. In addition, you should probably check at your cable provider's website to see if there's a place where you need to adjust some settings. While it's been several years since I had a cable hookup, I seem to recall that one of the things they wanted was to know what type of hookup I'd be making with what brand of computer, or some such. I may be mistaken, or that may no longer be relevant, or that may not be the case with your cable provider.
Good luck, and keep at it, as satisfaction is undoubtedly closer than you expect:))
    P.S.
If your OS is still at 10.4.5, that may be part of your problem, as there actually ARE fixes for problems (issues) introduced in each each Software Update. There's no point in erasing to start over if you do not intend on updating your software. Since 10.4.4 was the earliest Intel version, some of the earliest discovered issues (for some users) were not resolved until at least 10.4.6

Nvidia is a manufacturer of graphics chips and one of Apple's many suppliers. The chip will be attached to your logic board and has to do with graphics and the display. If the chip is defective and fails, Apple will replace the logic board under warranty. This should not in any way affect your hard drive, which is an entirely different component and is NOT physically attached to the logic board. Rather, it is connected by a cable which can be unplugged.
The reality of manufacturing is that despite all precautions, defective parts are occasionally produced which end up getting incorporated into things--even very expensive things. It's unfortunate, but it happens.
Your one year warranty should certainly cover the cost of the repair. You might want to consider getting 3 year Applecare.
You might be able to access your hard drive using another Mac and Firewire Target Disk Mode. If so, it would be wise to make a backup of your hard drive before sending your Mac off for repairs. If you have access to an Apple Store, they should be able to help you to do this. They might also be able to replace the logic board for you.
Your hard drive should not be affected by replacing the logic board, but there is always the possibility that the entire MBP will be examined, and if someone thinks the hard drive should be replaced, it probably would be. So be sure to make a backup of your entire hard drive before sending it off.
    Good luck!

  • HT1695 I know nothing about how to use my new ipod and when reading the little bit of information in the folder that came with it, all I can do is turn it on, but it just powers down after a few seconds.  How do I work this thing?

I know nothing about how to use my new ipod and when reading the little information that came with it, all I can do is turn it on.  Then in a few seconds it goes black, never having brought up a screen to do anything!  Help!  What do I do to get this thing going?

You might consider connecting it to the charger and charging up the battery overnight.

  • My macbook pro wont get passed the apple icon and the little were wheel below it.  Any suggestions on how I can get this thing to atleast get to the home page or sign in page

This initially started out as me trying to get my battery to work.  my battery was dying after a few minutes so I was trying to kill the battery and recharge it to see if I couldn't get it back to a full charge.  This didn't work but after a day or so I noticed the computer running slow and when I went to start it a couple days later the apple icon page would pop up and the little grey wheel would just whir away below it like it was thinking.  The screen was kinda hard to see.  Since then I have tried several different things to get the computer to fire back up as it should.  I have taken out the battery and left it hoping the internal battery would die and it would reset itself to a default mode.  Didn't work so I then tried taking the battery out and just using the power cord.  This didn't work.  I tried putting the battery out and in while running on the power cord.   this didn't work.  I have tried holding the "alt/option" key and that didn't work.  Although it did give me a different window.  I have tried holding down the "f" keys.  That didn't work.  I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.  That didn't work.  I had to shut it down and restart it holding down the eject key to get the disc back.  I am running out of things I can think of to try so if anyone has any ideas I am open to all of them.
    Thank you,
    Seldovian

  • How can I upload my photos from an sd card to my Macbook Pro? I have done everything I know to do, and yet it still doens't work, I am frustrated and ready to sell this thing.

I am so frustated with this computer, I cannot get it to do anything. I have read all the forums about moving photos from an sd card to this computer and nothing is working..Can anyone please help me before I sell this thing?

put the card in the card reader, open the card (it should appear on your desktop) select the photos you want to copy and drag them to where ever you want to store them, or copy and paste them.  it is exceedingly simple.
alternately open image capture and select the card from the list of devices and import them from there.  again very easy.

  • This Thing is a Frustrating Piece of Garbage...

...and Apple's user manual isn't a whole lot of help.
So now that I've got your attention, I hope I can get some help.
I bought an iPod Nano as my first mp3 player because of Apple's reputation for intuitive and kluge-free operation, but so far this has been a frustrating and disappointing experience.
Some of the issues I'm having with this thing:
    1) I have a library of mp3 files on my computer, nicely arranged in folders. I import those folders into iTunes and synch to the Nano. Instead of having these files nicely organized on the Nano, I end up with a multiplicity of folders (i.e. instead of a "Beatles" folder I have folders named "Beatles", "Beatles, The", and "The Beatles" with their contents seemingly strewn randomly among them. Yeah, that makes individual songs REAL easy to find.
    2) Along similar lines, this overly-helpful little monster decides to strew album contents among folders that it creates on its own. For instance, I end up with three Flogging Molly albums in the "Flogging Molly" folder, but then I end up with a separate "Flogging Molly / Lucinda Williams" folder for one individual song that has a guest artist involved. So not only does this stupid thing scatter the contents, I can't listen to the album in its intended order because the little Nazi is dictating otherwise. ***?
    3) I was hoping to make use of the handy video feature. But I can't get the frigging video files to download to my computer. Yes, I tried using the "Help" menu and yes, I read the frigging manual. It tells me I need to "...click iPod nano in the device list and click the Summary tab". I'd be happy to do so but I can find no "device list", nor is there any such thing as a Summary tab on my iTunes menu. I see my iPod listed under "Devices" in the column on the left side of the screen, but the only options I have associated with that is to expand it to show individual folders for Music, Movies, and TV Shows. The manual states that, alternately, I can go to "My Computer" where I can see that the iPod is treated as an external hard drive. Except that it isn't. Yes, it's plugged into an active USB port, and yes, iTunes is on. But my computer doesn't display the nano as an external drive, whereas it DOES display my 500 gB external hard drive when I attach it to the same USB port.
    4) My displeasure doesn't end with the nano. iTunes is similarly an anger-inducing little dictator of an application. I've checked the "Sync only checked songs and videos" box and then clicked the "Sync" tab at the bottom right of the window several times, yet my nano is loaded with files that I DON'T WANT LOADED on it. Again, I've read the manual and am pretty certain that I'm doing this right, with the possible exception that the manual states I need to click on the "apply" button. Am I wrong in assuming that the "sync" button is the "apply" button, because there for **** sure isn't anything labelled "apply" anywhere on the screen or in the drop downs.
So if you've gathered that I'm less than enchanted, you're quite right. I hope someone at Apple reads this and has a good, hard look at these issues, because at this point I'm regretting spending a lot more for an Apple product because of their reputation, only to find out that my music and videos are being held captive by an electronic Kim Jong-il. And hopefully someone here can help me figure out how to use this lovely-but-aggravating little monster.
    Thanks!

I ended up checking the "Manually manage music and videos" box under "options" on the "Summary" page.
Then I clicked on the arrow to the left of my iPod in the left column, and clicked on "Music".
Next, I found the files I wanted to remove. Say, for instance, I wanted to get rid of all the "Rage Against the Machine" files- clicked on the topmost file to highlight it, held down the shift key, clicked on the bottommost file so that all of the "Rage Against the Machine" files were highlighted, then right clicked to bring up the menu and clicked on "Delete". When the "Are you sure you want to remove these?" window showed up I clicked on "Remove". Now all of these songs are gone from the nano but are still in my iTunes files.
Similarly, I looked in the "Artist" colum and found songs that had variations on artist names. So for instance I went through all the Beatles tunes and found the songs listing the artist as "Beatles, The". Clicked on each of those songs one at a time to highlight each one, right clicked to bring up "Get Info", clicked on the "Info" tab, and changed the artist name simply to "Beatles" and clicked on "OK".
Finally I clicked on the "eject" icon just to the right of the iPod name. After a brief sync it was Ok to remove the iPod. And now my music files are crunched down into individual files, and the stuff I don't want isn't on the nano.

  • Zen Vision M Firmware Problem!!! Can't deal with this thing any more...

Can't deal with this thing any more...3 Hello friends I'm new in the forum
Well as the title mentions, I'm about to throw this thing oute of the window!!!
    It's a 30 GB Zen Vision M, I own it ,5 years now...
I have read all the relevant posts in the forum about this player, I tried my best, nothing really worked.....
So now I have a Zen which only boots in the recovery mode!!
I have Cleaned it Up, Formated it, and tried to reload its firmware BUT when I connect it and try to reload it, in the end it always says Firmware Upgrade Failed!!Really can't understand it!!!!!
I've communicated with Creative, i wasn't at all satisfied with their responses... I think what they're trying to do is to avoid me, and earn some time with really useless suggestions which I had already told them won't work!!!So in the end they wanted me to send my Zen in Italy and pay more than 100 Euros for what an ,5 year old mp3 player? No I prefer buying a new Cowon with that amount of money!!!
Anyways I'm pretty mad now, so I'll move to the subject..
I have Service Pack 3 Windows XP in my computer, and I did roll back on the Media Player 0 from the I had, using the instructions from a previous post. The truth is that it rolled back with less steps than it showed, and I say that because it mentions in a step that in the add-remove programms, in the Windows XP-Software Updates section, I should find a Windows Media player thing which really doesnt exist and I suspect it's the Service Pack 3 because I have done the same in a SP2 and worked exactly as the steps said..Anyway the fact is I have Windows Media Player 0 now!!!
Please someone tell why can't I upgrade my firmware... I can't deal with this anymore!!!!

So you say that I actually have the Windows Media Player 0, because my Zen is being recognised..
I have rebooted it several times but its just the same thing...it shows firmware problem!!
Why isn't this player working?I've seen many people, not only from here, who have the same exact problem and they gave up on their mp3... I dont have this kind of luxury to buy a new one!!I don't know whether Creative has put on this a "time bomb" or is just faulty, but I really wish it could be saved..
I'm saying it is WMP0 because the firmware file sees the player. The computer can recognize it but with WMP components that firmware file would be grayed-out..So when you reloaded the firmware did you choose "reload firmware" Before you connected it's?(That is what erases the firmware prior to uploading the firmware. If you did not do that it could cause it to fail.Do these ste

  • Generally really unhappy with this thing. (This is a rant.)

OK, does anyone else think this thing is worth the money? A Verizon plan with unlimited data costs me and my wife almost $200 monthly and here's a brief list of issues:
First of all, Desktop Manger hates Mac computers. Media Sync doesn't work at all. It opens iPhoto for no reason, and can't see any of my iTunes content. But just read the RIM propaganda about how it seamlessly works with all your content.
The browser experience is nearly useless, even after trying everone's tips to optimize it, and you can't specify any other browser as the default. I have apps like Kayak for browsing flight and hotel info, but good luck trying to book something from your phone. I can't even get movie tickets reliably because the browser interface is painfully slow and hangs up constantly. It's like dial-up on a postage stamp screen.
Tiny screen, and the $%#@ trackball is maddening! I'm sure the trackpad is better, but I guess we got the version just before it was released.
Just tried to remove a couple of useless apps via Desktop Manager and the process literally took over 50 minutes to remove them, during which time the phone can't be used. Then another 10 minutes to restart, then it starts to sync all over again and my wallpaper, custom ringtones and more are JUST PLAIN GONE!
I could go on all day, but here's the thing that I can't believe:
I got all excited about the Torch. Great independent reviews, full touch-screen experience plus a physical keyboard, etc.
The catch? AT&T ONLY! Simply can't have one if you have Verizon. I've been holding out on chucking this brick for an iPhone because of the AT&T monopoly, but I'm just about ready to bite the bullet because this device is nearly useless for anything but phone calls & email.
Anybody else ready to microwave this burrito?
    Thanks for listening...
    T

I don't know what you're doing to need unlimited data. I use the internet on mine all the time and have not even come close to my 500MB data.
As for the browser, go to the Opera website and download Opera Mini. The zooming is a bit strange, but no huge hurtle. It helped me access some sites that I couldn't with the BlackBerry browser. You can have the BB browser identify as Firefox or IE. It's in Browser Configuration in the Options category.
Try to uninstall and reinstall Desktop Manager. If you're using version 6.0, try 5.0 and vice versa.
I have had very, very few problems with my trackball. I've had my phone for a year. If it's sticky or not rolling correctly, run it over some newspaper. The screen is larger than some other BBs.
You can remove apps right from the phone. It shouldn't take that long. Go to the options and applications and delete it.
Always back up your phone before you change anything. If something is gone, then you can just back up your phone and try again. I don't know what all is syncing that shouldn't be. You should not have to reload things after deleting an app. You could back up your phone, then wipe it and start over, as other more tech savvy people have mentioned.
If you're really that unhappy and want to get an iPhone, though I have no idea why you'd want one, then just do it. No sense in being miserable. Perhaps you just have a defective phone.

  • This thing is not working!! i need help please!!!

i picked up a ipod nano today figureing that its a pretty good mp3 player for my needs... i get home turn the thing on mess with it for a few mins turn it off plug it in to charge and it still turns on and off so im figureing okay cool ill install my drivers and itunes and start building my playlist well the first issue i get is itunes will not start up it just flat out refuses... to start up i have no idea why the updater worked fine for what i installed off the disk which told me everything was up to date as always i went to apple.com the website to make sure drivers arethe correct ones found out they are not...GREAT!!!.. so i delete the old drivers and install the new ones then i go to update my ipod nano and it says "sorry device notfound" mean while my ipods frozen giveing me the no disconnect symbol it wont even disconnect when i turn off the usb device then it gave me the battery charge warning light then turned right off after freaking out. i then spent a little while redoing my itunes and ipod updaters to where there is no application issues. i kept checking my ipod to see if it was chargeing theres no indicator whats so ever when the ipod nano is turned off of it getting charged like my moms old ipod 20 gig and shes had that thing forever without any issues at all. meanwhile my ipod is a metal electronic light paper weight right now.. if this thing doesn't work when i get up in the afternoon tomorrow form it being connected to a AC adapter like apple says it should work im takeing it back and gonna drop the extra 100 on the 30gig that i know shouldn't have any issues... cause **** this *****!!!
if any of you can tell me how to get my ipod nano to turn on that would be great let alone how i can get it to update and then export songs to the thing

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    the
first issue i get is itunes will not start up it just
flat out refuses... to start up i have no idea why
You might want to ask for help in the iTunes for Windows Forum
the updater worked fine for what i installed off the
disk which told me everything was up to date as
always i went to apple.com the website to make sure
drivers arethe correct ones found out they are
not...GREAT!!!.. so i delete the old drivers and
    install the new ones
Sorry, I'm on a Mac so I'm not sure what "drivers" you are referring to.
You need iTunes and the latest version is 6.0.2.
You also want the version 1.1 software for the nano.
Both are available for free from www.apple.com
then i go to update my ipod nano
and it says "sorry device notfound" mean while my
ipods frozen giveing me the no disconnect symbol it
wont even disconnect when i turn off the usb device
then it gave me the battery charge warning light then
turned right off after freaking out.

iTunes and Windows Explorer report the wrong amount of available space on iPod
No songs appear on the iPod after an apparently successful update from iTunes
Music copied to mapped network drive instead of iPod
    Then read this link:
Strange iPod behavior when Windows confuses iPod with network drive
    There's also this:
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
    i then spent a
little while redoing my itunes and ipod updaters to
where there is no application issues. i kept checking
my ipod to see if it was chargeing theres no
indicator whats so ever when the ipod nano is turned
off of it getting charged like my moms old ipod 20
gig and shes had that thing forever without any
    issues at all.
If the nano is charging when it is turned on there is a small icon in the top right of the screen. If it is turned off the icon is large and uses all the screen.
iPod: About the battery charge status icon
Another link (sorry to give you so much reading to do):
    iPod's battery doesn't charge
meanwhile my ipod is a metal
electronic light paper weight right now.. if this
thing doesn't work when i get up in the afternoon
tomorrow form it being connected to a AC adapter like
apple says it should work im takeing it back and
gonna drop the extra 100 on the 30gig that i know
shouldn't have any issues... cause **** this
if any of you can tell me how to get my ipod nano to
turn on that would be great let alone how i can get
it to update and then export songs to the thing
    Hope some of those help.
    Regards,
    Colin R.
