This video could not be played

I have purchased 2 movies in the itunes store(Bandits and Shoter) and downloaded a free TV preview of Lost series. None will play on my Iphone. I get a message "The movie could not be played" and get returned back to the main menu.
The Bandits movie used to play a week ago. This week it simply would not play. I have tried a soft reset on the iphone. Deleting and Re-syncing the movies in the iphone. You Tube movies, however, play correctly,
Would you please tell me how to fix this?

If a Reset and removing and re-transferring the video to the iPhone has not worked, try restoring your iPhone as a the next step.

This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.

  • "This Movie could not be played" Message appears when trying to play video?

I have synced a number of vids to my iPhone 3G running 2.2 software.
This has been done thru iTunes which has a feature that advises you BEFORE you try and sync the file if it is in a compatible format and size. If not, then you cannot sync it.
I have been using a third party Vid file type converter to convert various files into iPhone compatible .mp4 files with sizes of either 320 X 240 or 640 X 480.
All worked well until today. I had just finished playing such a vid with no problems and when I went to replay it I got this message:
"THIS MOVIE COULD NOT BE PLAYED"
I then went thru my 26 vids that I had synced to my iPhone and found that 12 of them would no longer play????????
NOTHING changed...How could a vid that played fine suddenly not play anymore, along with a number of others that previously played with no problems?
I cannot think of what specific parameters are the same in those 12 files that make up the group that will no longer play?
I did a "Hard Shut Down" of my iPhone and then Reset all Settings...nothing worked?
Tonite, when I get home and have access to iTunes, I will delete and re-sync some of the now unplayable vids to see if they will be accepted for syncing and if so, if they will now play again?
In the meantime, is anyone else having similar problems? Cause? Fix? Workarounds?
Any advise would be much appreciated, as I do NOT want to lose the ability to view these vids, or any others like them, that may no longer play on my iPhone!
    Thanx..
    Chuck Proche

    Thankyou for the two replies.
I have some good news but I still am concerned about why this happened?
Using iTunes, I deleted then re-synced the video files that wouldn't play and now all of them play again.
As I don't know why this problem occured, I am concerned about it happening again...it is NOT fun to have to delete and reload all of these vids, but, at least I know that there is some kind of "workaround"!
If anyone has an idea of WHY this happened and, perhaps how to prevent it in the future, I would appreciate that input despite the fact that all my vids now play again.

  • How do I fix "This movie could not be played" erros?

On my iPod touch (1.1.3 with January Software Upgrade) whenever I try to play a movie it tells me "This movie could not be played." I don't quite understand why it is doing this. They are movies I downloaded from iTunes. I have some other movies that iTunes tells me cannot be played on my iPod and therefore does not sync those movies, so shouldn't it have kept these movies off as well if it couldn't play them? I am quite sure that my iPod should be capable of playing these movies. I have lately noticed that it also says the same message if I try to play a youtube video, another movie online, or audio online. What is happening and what can I do to fix it? (Already gone through everything in the "Five steps to fix common iPod Touch problems")
    Thanks.

I got the same message. I made a slideshow in iPhoto. I used songs from itunes. I exported it into movies (.mov) and then tried to put it into my touch. I read somewhere (on another blog) that there are some licensing issues - which is stupid because I purchased the music from itunes. Anyway, the gist I got from that one was that you should burn the songs to a cd...then re-import them into itunes from the cd. Then you can use them without error. I don't know if I'm following the appropriate steps, but so far it isn't working for me.

  • "The Selected Video could not be played" error after latest software update

After the latest software update for the Apple TV I've come across an interesting problem that's driving me crazy.
    In a nutshell:
    - I can rent movies and watch them.
    - I can watch video podcasts.
    - I can watch TV shows purchased on iTunes and streamed from my mac
    - I can watch TV shows ripped by myself and streamed from my mac
    - I can watch movie trailers
    - I can watch YouTube videos
    - I can watch a movie purchased on iTunes that has been synched to the Apple TV
    - I can watch a movie ripped by myself that has been synched to the Apple TV
    - I CANNOT watch a movie purchased on iTunes but it's streamed from my mac
    - I CANNOT watch a movie ripped by myself that is streamed from my mac
Whenever I'm trying to watch a movie streamed from the mac I get the following error message:
"The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
These are movies I could watch perfectly well before the software update, and I could perfectly watch them streamed from the mac.
Any clues as to what could be going on? Any help or hits will be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    Julian

I am having similar problems. Rolling Apple TV back to 2.0 fixes it, but then I deal with the 2.0 bugs.
Basically, I've tried this three times so far: reset back to 2.0. Resync everything I can(I have about 500gb of video which is stored on a USB drive, but I selectively sync part of my library and all my music).
I have about 40gb free on the 160gb ATV. Everything plays fine - synched music, synced video, streaming video. My types of video are:
    - iTunes purchased
    - Ripped using handbrake to h.264 standard stuff (plays fine on my iphone and computer)
    - downloaded h.264 "ipod compatible"
    - converted video using iSquint
After upgrading to 2.0.2, initially everything plays fine. But the MOMENT I sync something new to the ATV, then it all falls to crap.
    - itunes purchases play fine (synced and streamed
    - iSquint converted videos play fine when synced, won't stream "The selected video could not be played" bs)
    - Handbrake rips can play if sync'ed, won't stream
    - downloaded ipod compatible will usually play and sync.
Doesn't matter if they're movies or tv shows.
*All of these played fine before the "upgrade" (some upgrade).* After the upgrade, and after the first post-upgrade sync, it falls apart.
Talking to Apple support about this results in the usual BS. Unplug your ATV. Resync your purchases, We don't support third party software yada yada.
All I know is, Apple broke something with 2.0.2. Either something to do with a USB drive access, or something to do with one of their stupid new flags in quicktime, or whatever. It needs to be fixed.
Going back, once again, to 2.0 until this is recognized and fixed by Apple.

  • "The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized."

I am having problems with "The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized." It happens when I try to watch TV show/Movie previews.
I can usually watch a few previews before the error comes up. Once the error comes up, sometimes I cannot watch the previews that I was able to watch just minutes ago. Other times, it seems to be dependent on the preview - some previews work fine and others don't work at all.
Fortunately, I can still watch all purchased content.
Apple TV is at 2.4. I've tried de/reauthorizing iTunes and logging out/in via Apple TV.
Can anyone offer help? Anyone have the same issue?

I just purchased a music video from iTunes onto my MacBook Pro and downloaded it to my apple tv and had the same problem.
I also rented two movies on my MacBook Pro while traveling in Spain, when I got home and sync'd with apple tv it would not play on apple tv only the laptop. Got not authorized error... I then rent a movie directly from apple tv and that does play.
This is painful and I just bought a second apple tv unit... regretting it so far!

  • "The selected video could not be played."

So after the update, I noticed I couldn't stream my movies to my appletv anymore. If I wanted to play my backed up movies on the appletv, I'd need to sync it instead of streaming it over my wired network. Same with my music video collection. My movie artwork and descriptions will show fine on the appletv, but when I go to play, it responds "The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized" It works, however, when synced over. I thought the appletv could play all my itunes content, and it streamed just fine in v1.0.
Anyone else having this issue or been able to resolve it? I appreciate all the feedback!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
The message you see also appears when content can't be accessed, since you know you can play these files then it would seem that your issue is likely access. Are these files on an external hard drive, do the files or any enclosing folders have illegal characters in them (e.g. '/') do you have permissions set properly for the drive and folders on it.
Yes, ensure all your software is up to date.

  • IPod Touch 4th Generation: This Movie Could Not Be Played

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I'll ask this question here to see if anyone can help me out. I've been having this problem for a while now but it's beginning to get to me. I have 30 films bought straight off iTunes along with 8 TV series totalling at around 40GB. The problem is that every time I sync these films over to my iPod I just get this error when I go to play them: This Movie Could Not Be Played. The video format is correct and they have played on the same iPod before. They are SD if that makes a difference and I have tried every soultion I know of. I have restored to iOS 4.3.5 with no success and have also reset all the settings after scouring the web with no success either. If there is anything I need to do or have missed out that may help me solve this problem please tell me.
    Thanks,
    Alex Holyoake
Edit: I forgot to mention that it can play music videos just fine, suspiciously...

  • Apple tv error message "the selected video could not be played.  the format was not recognized"

my apple tv has started displaying error message "the selected video could not be played.  the format was not recognized" on all my movies.  i have never had a problem with it before.  please help.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It seems that your Apple TV may be unable to see your movies, where are your movies kept, have you recently moved them, have you done anything else that might be related.

  • "This movie could not be played", and apps don't launch

    Brand new iPod Touch
    Windows XP
Both iTunes and the Touch have the latest software
    Syncs successfully
Attempting to play a movie produces the error "The movie could not be played" on the iPod Touch. The movie plays successfully in iTunes on the PC.
    Affected content includes:
"Juno" digital copy which was included with a DVD, launches in iTunes, enter a unique code to redeem.
"Stargate" free preview, downloaded directly from the iTunes store on the Touch
Additional symptom: no downloaded app will run on the iPod Touch (the "built-in" apps run fine) They appear to launch and then instantly disappear.
Affected content: "Facebook" and "Yahoo Messenger" apps
These problems occur whether the content is added through iTunes on the PC and then synced over, or downloaded directly to the Touch through the built-in store.
Because "free", non-DRM content (such as videos I've created from DVDs using Handbrake) works perfectly, I suspect an authorization problem.
    Already tried:
    syncing and re-syncing
    multiple hard resets
de-authorizing and then re-authorizing the iTunes on the PC, and then re-syncing
    Backup and restore
Anything I'm missing? Otherwise it's going back to Best Buy tomorrow.

    Similar story here...
    iPod Touch - 32GB v3.1.2 (7D11) - Model MC008LL
    iTunes - 9.0.2 (25) - Intel 32-bit
Bought a 32GB iPod Touch yesterday and have been trying for hours to get two of my "digital copy" movies to work.
I have some other videos that I converted from MPEG-4 to H.264 and they play perfectly. I also suspect it may be a digital rights (DRM) related issue.
    My apps, however, do work:
    Skype (free)
    Google Earth (free)
    Globe Convert (free)
    NASA (free)
I have tried resetting the device and restoring all settings with no success.

  • Error message this video can not be played on iPad using you tube

Why do I get this error message when using you tube and how can I solve it. It just started happening recently.

There are a few possibilities I can think of.
    A) file names are too long. What is "too long" for an iPod? I don't know, you'd have to experiment, but some people with outrageously long file names were unable to sync the file over.
    B) Something in your conversion settings is incorrect. The iPod is pretty specific in what it will accept.
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
--this seems unlikely if you've used the iPod defaults in each of the programs you've tried.
    C) Are you certain that you are asking iTunes to sync the iPod-compatible videos to the iPod and not the original videos? In other words, you've converted your videos, removed the originals from iTunes and imported the converted videos into iTunes to sync to your iPod. The original videos and the converted videos might have the same name.
    D) various strange problems happen when updating iPod firmware and/or iTunes. If you've done the 5 R's (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/), then you may need to consider downgrading the iPod software and/or iTunes. Remember that in the 5 R's, "Restore" deletes your content, so be sure to have a backup of your iPod content. I believe downgrading firmware will also require erasing your iPod, too.

  • How-to-fix? -- "This movie could not be played" error

all of sudden movies don't play; neither stuff on YouTube, nor the iPhone tutorials on Apple.com
    i'm accessing these over wifi
i see an hour-glass-like thingie saying "loading movie" but then a pop-up pops-up giving the error message
    any ideas?
    thanks

thanks for the reply, and i thought of that, too
but i only have 43 pics on it, so there's still 7gb+
prior reply nailed it, so i suspect it twas an OS burp

  • I was using the 4oD app on my iPod touch and when I went to watch something on it it froze my internet access and I can't get rid of the message "This movie could not be played". How do I fix this???

    Please help!!

Have you tried resetting the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • This Operation Could Not Be Completed...No Video

So I'm getting this error message "This Operation Could Not Be Completed...No Video" when trying to Log and Capture some footage from a mini DV tape.
I've tried this on my Macbook Pro, 10.5.8, Final Cut 7
I've tried this on my Powerbook G4, 10.4.11 Final Cut 5
I've tried to capture the footage directly into both machines and via external drives.
My deck is a Sony PD170. After getting this message I tried another tape on both machines. No problem capturing this footage. This tells me it is not a firewire issue.
Is it possible that this is a tape/capture setting I'm missing? I've used every NTSC setting possible.

Not familiar with this camera, but here are a few questions/ideas
When you play the tape in the camera, can you see the tape settings displayed on the camera's lcd?  This may be a menu setting or a button push.  What exactly are the settings?
Was the tape shot on this camera?  Sometimes, there can be compatability problems with material shot on a different camera.  I think some cameras will playback dvcam material via the video outs but not via firewire,  Could this be the problem.  I have some memory that there may be other formats some cameras will playback via video out but not firewire.
Hope this is of some help.

  • This operation could not be completed as there is no video - capturing PAL

Ok, I tried all the suggestions I've seen here. I have a Sony FX-1000 and I'm trying to capture a PAL mini-DV tape (which is easily read and played on this camcorder) using Final Cut Pro - latest version. The connection is iLink / Firewire 800 and has been used to capture many NTSC videos in the past. I have tried all settings on Final Cut Pro - under Capture Settings - to no avail.
In all cases, "Preview Disabled" is displayed in the color-bar window. However, the playback controls (rewind, play, ff) all work fine using the buttons under the window. The miniDV plays fine on the camcorder - both picture and sound.
After starting the playback, and pressing "Capture Now", I get a solid black window indicating that the capture software is "waiting for timecode", even with the tape obviously playing. After about 2-5 seconds, I receive the error message "This operation could not be completed as there is no video".
I've tried several computers, several cables (both Firewire 400 and 800) - as well as all the PAL settings and FC Pro and FC Express 4.0. So, any suggestions? I could use some help.
    Thanks

Solved the problem. I used an old Sony Handycam DCR-HC28 with Firewire connection and used Final Cut Express with the settings: PAL, DV-PAL DV Converter in Easy Setup.
I was NOT able to control the Handycam with this setting but I could start the capture and then press "play" on the Handycam and it captured. Strange way to solve the problem. Hope this helps someone.
BTW - the HDV FX-1000 did not work this way. I guess the cheap camcorder works better at this!
Thanks to all for the help!
