Thoroughly Confused

Here's the deal. I'm going on the trip of a lifetime to Italy next month and I want to get the best video quality possible from my Canon HF100 and either iMovie 08 or FCE 4.0.1. I've read through these forums as well as forums dealing with my model camcorder and now of course I am utterly confused. The number of frame rate options on my camcorder as well as importing and exporting options on my Mac are overwhelming, and I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about AV stuff on the Mac and PC.
I'm looking for direction in two areas I guess. One is what modes/frame rates work best with iMovie 08 and FCE, and once my footage is on my mac what app/export option will yield the best results, and stay as close as possible to the quality of the source material?
The Canon HF100 has options for 24p which they recommend using in tandem with Cinema Mode, but it doesn't say what Cinema Mode does. It also has 60i and 30p. I've heard all kinds of conflicting info about how these frame rates work in my two apps, so many that I'm not even going to start to get into them all. Does iMovie 08 or FCE read all these frame rates? Does it recognize them and then convert them to something else? Which ones work best in the two apps?
As far as exporting goes, do I even know where to start? This is one area where I believe even Apple could not truly simplify things. I eventually want to watch what I shoot on my HDTV of course either streaming it over the network to my XBOX 360 using Connect 360 or burn it on a DVD which I really don't want to because of it's a physical media and It's going to be downgraded to MPEG2. In the past I've used the Apple TV preset in iMovie 08 to stream standard def stuff to my 360 without any issues. That will lower the resolution on the HD video I shoot so thats not the most appealing option. Anyone have any idea of what might be a good export option to accomplish this?
Also depending on what frame rate I shoot in do I need to pay attention to what export option I use as they also have options for frame rates and resolutions?
Can anyone help bring a little clarity to my situation?
Thank You
Joshua

Joshua,
From Canon USA's website pages about the HF100: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&mo delid=16187#ModelFeaturesAct
"..24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film.." (..My italics..)
I'm not going to respond to Steve, but I'll try to explain this, and to answer your question.
The camera can record single, complete frames of video. These frames are normally - or until recently have been generally - composed of two separate "fields" of information, each comprising half the total number of lines down a video, or TV, screen. One field has odd-numbered lines, the other consists of even-numbered lines. When these two fields are shown rapidly one after the other as 60 "interlaced" fields per second, the fields blend into each other, and the effect is of 30 complete frames of video per second.
The HF100 appears to record not separate half-a-full-frame-of-information fields, but complete, whole frames of info (..known as 'progressive' frames; progressing all the way down the screen, as lines 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc, instead of 1,3,5,7,9 followed by 2,4,6,8,10, etc..)
But note that Canon's own description says that you can "..change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i).." which means that the 24 genuine full frames of info are then separated, split or duplicated so that 60 separate fields are produced from those full frames, to allow the video to be recorded - and replayed - in the normal 60-interlaced-fields-per second manner.
Now, 24 doesn't divide exactly into 60. There are 60 fields to provide every second (..they could be identical fields; they don't necessarily need to be different from each other..) but to divide up 24 frames into 60 pieces means that each of those 60 fields may contain 0.4 of a original frame. Just using simple mathematics: 24/60=0.4.
The frames may be assigned differently, as it's unlikely that any field will be assigned 0.4 (two fifths) of a frame. Let's say that every two of the 60 fields-each-second are the same. That gives us 30 full and complete frames to be manufactured out of the original 24. That would mean that each of the 30 frames per second is composed of 1.25 of the original 24fps frames. Now, one-and-a-quarter of the original 24 squeezed into each of the recorded-to-chip 30 frames would still not really be feasible. So there must be a method to -d-i-s-t-r-i-b-u-t-e- those 24 frames more-or-less equally between the final 30 per second frames (..or 60 interleaved fields per second..) which the camcorder records onto a chip.
The way that it's usually done is - as Adam Wilt described - chopping things up so that half-frames, i.e; "fields" of video, get distributed between the resultant 30 frames ..or 60 fields.. per second - some of which may be identical to each other, and others not.
Here's how he describes it, starting at 24p Standard about a fifth of the way down the page: it's "..the same 2:3 or 3:2 pulldown cadence long used to transfer 24fps film to NTSC video. The first 24p frame is written to two fields of 60i video, the next is written to three, the next to two, and the next to three again, as shown in the graphic."
So the various chopped-up portions of the original 24-distinct-and-complete-frames-captured-each-second are "farmed out" between the resultant recorded-to-chip 30 frames per second ..which Canon acknowledges are actually recorded onto the chip as being "..recorded at 60i.."
"24p Cinema Mode" (sic), as Canon describes it, above, is a mixture of shooting at 24 frames-per-second (though it appears to be then chopped-up and redistributed as 60 interlaced fields per second, like normal video, but jerkier) to look like the 'jerky' motion of film, with optional adjustments as well to the comparative brightness of regions of the picture, to make the video look more like the 'linear' (constant) brightness changes which film records. (Video is usually made brighter in 'mid-white' or mid brightness regions of the picture, because cathode ray tube picture screens traditionally didn't cope with brightness the same way in mid-tones as in dark or very bright regions.) ..That's the "gamma" which Steve referred to.
On the "Auto/Manual Controls" page http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Canon-Vixia-HF100-Camcorder-Review-35094/Au to--Manual-Controls.htm of that Camcorderinfo review which I mentioned, their description of "Cine Mode" explains that: "..Cine Mode is an alternate gamma mode for how the camcorder processes colors, meant to make the HF100 match something closer to Canon's professional line rather than the oversaturated colors standard on most consumer camcorders. When active, the highlights and shadows are compressed and the midtones are expanded. Cine mode presumes, to some extent, that you've properly lit your scene. This is not the best run-and-gun setting, as you'll lose more details in the shadows and highlights. However, if the lighting is good, the image tends to have great looking colors.."
So, I repeat what I explained earlier, in answer to your previous question; ".."..it doesn't say what Cinema Mode does.." It takes half of one frame, adds it to another frame, and tries to produce the effect of genuine cinema film. It just produces jerky video. Don't bother with it. Don't waste this "trip of a lifetime" by shooting unsatisfactory, jerky "pretend film".
Now if you want your video to be "Fellini-esque" - as you're going to Italy - and want it to look like films made in Italy (..instead of looking like normal video..) you could use "24p Cinema Mode" - as Canon describes it - and switch to shooting at 24p, and adjust your "gamma" (the relative brightness of mid-tones) so that your "trip of a lifetime" looks like "Juliet of the Spirits" (..though that's rather super-bright!..) or Ginger and Fred ..but if you DO want to make your video look more like film, then - as I suggested - "..practise with the camera before you go, so that you know everything about how to use it before you even get there.."
I don't recommend Canon's "24p Cinema Mode", though, as things will look rather jerkier than normal. (..Shooting at 24p frame rate is often - mistakenly, in my view - thought to make a video look like a film, but the rate at which films are shown on cinema screens is actually two brief views of each of those 24 frames each second ..so you actually see 48 images per second, each image being shown twice ..and so the effect is rather different from simply seeing 24 images per second, which would flicker terribly. The 60i, or 30fps, manner in which those 24 frames per second are shown on a video screen differs markedly different from the 48 images-per-second which you see in a cinema or theatre. The so-called "film look" which video shooters strive for involves a different "depth of field" (amount of the shot that's in focus) when shot with a video camera, than the depth of field which a larger-frame film camera provides, too. So it's really very simplistic to think that shooting in "24p Cinema Mode" will provide a movie which really does look genuinely like a film!..)
Anyway, as I don't want to get into a discussion with Steve, I won't post any more comments or advice in this thread, because I think that his and my temperaments don't match, and I just don't enjoy the harangue.
Enjoy your trip to Italy, and I hope that you get lots of great footage!

    I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode.  I am thoroughly confused now after researching online.  I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help!  Is there a way to get it all back if I do restore?? Can I my stuff back through iCloud??

    Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
    The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
    When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
    The good news part only happens if you had a backup.

  • Bold & Macs: I'm thoroughly confused!

    Hoping someone might be able to help.
    I upgraded to Blackberry Bold (aren't they beautiful?!) and I have a macbook (Tiger). I have spent hours trying to understand all of the problems, issues and advice being provided on this and other forums regarding the syncing (etc) of these two apps.
    Before I install ANYTHING or set up my emails/contacts/calendar/notes (just had a corrupted hard drive issue so am basically starting from scratch) I wondered whether someone could confirm the following understanding for me (gleaned from many different sources)...??
    (1) I can use Missing Sync to connect & sync with Apple's iCal and Address Book?
    (2) No need to even look or do anything with iSync or other Apple Syncing Services?
    (3) I have to use Entourage (rather than Apple Mail which I'd prefer frankly) if I want to sync e-mails with BBB?
    (4) PocketMac does not currently support Bold/Mac and I should stay away from that software until their syncing issues are fixed?
    (5) I will wait until January 2009 for seamless syncing with a dedicated desktop for Bolds & Macs?
    This would all mean I would end up using: Entourage (bleh), iCal and Address Book (and Mark/Space Notes thingummy too) and sync using Missing Sync with no problems...? Is that right? Or have I misinterpreted some of the advice??
    Thanking in advance for clearing up the confusion...

  • Thoroughly confused about supported resolutions using MDP to VGA adapter

    I've read many posts on the topic and I still have no idea what is correct. Some people claim the max res for this adapter is 1600x1200 while others claim they are getting 1920x1200 with it. I have a 24" HP LCD that has VGA and HDMI as the input choices. HDMI limits the res to 1920x1080. Will this adapter run the HP @ 1920x1200 (native resolution) or will it limit it to 1600x1200 ? BTW this is being used on a late 2008 unibody MacBook. Thanks

    Problem solved. I picked up the MDP to VGA adapter and was able to use the monitors native res of 1920x1200 but the flicker and wavyness made it impossible to use. And yes the adapter had the current firmware. But what I discovered in the process was that in mirror mode I am unable to drive the monitor at optimum resolution. With that in mind I tried the MDP to HDMI adapter again, unchecking mirror mode, moving the Finder bar to the external display and SHAZAM. I have a rock solid display external display now running at 1920x1200 : )

  • Thoroughly Confused with ADSM created access-lists when viewing ASA config

    Background:
    I am trying to unravel a ASA 5550 config that has been created over several years, by multiple people, some who used ADSM, some who used CLI.
    None of them ever removed any lines from the configuration, and none did any documentation.
    I have several basic questions, which show my ignorance.
    When examining the actual configuration from a CLI perspective:
    1. Does an ADSM-created access list end with any specific ADSM-added suffix?
    2. When ANY access list is created in an ASA 5550, does it HAVE to be included in the access-group command to be functional? Can it also be functional if referenced in a "nat" command?
    3. If the access list does meet either of the criteria specified in question #2, is it completely non-functional?
    4. If an access list is applied to a logical or physical port that is shut down, is the access list functional?

    Actually, I don't think I ever made myself clear.
    I am working with a hard copy of the CLI.
    I have no acccess to the devices to run any commands, nor access to the ADSM.
    I have to get someone with access to the devices to get the CLI based config, or run any show commands for me.
    As stated before, it has been built and rebuilt by different people, some using CLI, some using ADSM, but no one ever cleaned up code or documented.
    I have probably 10-15 different access lists in this config.
    Some look to be affiliated with specific ports. Some of these ports are up, some down.
    I have the same rule sets appearing in 3 separate access lists, in some cases.
    Of course, each of these 3 access lists is slightly different.
    Here is the worst example I have to deal with, and hence why I need to know if an access-list can be active WITHOUT being defined in the access-group command AND AT THE SAME time NOT affiliated with a port.
    An example:
    3 access lists:
    Prmary_Public_access_in
    Primary_Public_access_in_tmp
    Arin_Primary_Public_access_in
    Primary_Public_access_in_tmp is associated with the Primary_Public interface, since it is defined in an access-group command.
    Arin_Public_Primary_access_in is associated with a logical port that is shutdown.
    Primary_Public_access_in does not appear to be directly associated with any one port
    So are Arin_Public_Primary_access_in and Primary_Public_access_in access lists that being referenced to manage traffic?

  • Confused re: CS5 v Elements, different versions of ACR, etc.

    I'm sorry, but I am just thoroughly confused now.
    I have been using CS4 with ACR 5.4 though I prefered Elements 6; I'd do my RAW editing with ACR and anything else, usually, with Elements 6.  But, yup, I got a new camera.  Still Nikon but I found out I had to have ACR 6.  So now I have Elements 9 and ACR 6 and I am noticing a lot of differences aka problems that I didn't have before.  So I am wondering if this is because I am trying to use this with Elements and am I going to have to get CS5?
    Here are my issues:
    1. Even though I tell it to open several files, only one NEF will open in ACR at a time.  If I open the image or close it, the next one will open it.  Previously in ACR 5.4 I had a sidebar of thumbnails on the left and could edit something like 70 images at once if I wanted.  This adds a lot of time to editing, of course, if I have to do them one at a time.
    2. In ACR, when I'm done editing and I click on Save Image, the only option I get to save it as is a DNG.  I had no idea what a DNG before today was.  Granted, I'm sure they're useful for many people but I really need to do save as a JPG, like before in version 5.4.  This also goes hand in hand with my first problem, before I would batch save them all when I was finished.  I don't understand why I should need yet another file type.  I looked at the DNG converter but I don't see how to save DNGs as JPGs without opening them (and again, version 6 is only letting me do one file at a time).
    I think there was more but I can't remember right now, if I do I'll come back lol
    thanks

    This Camera Raw FAQ entry helps sort some of the compatibility out.  As you probably know, you can look in the Camera Raw ReadMe files to determine what camera is supported by what version.
    When running as part of Photoshop Elements, Camera Raw reduces some of its features.  Perhaps this is at the root of the differences you are seeing.  I don't have personal experience with Camera Raw and Elements 9 together, but I can tell you that Camera Raw 6.x does allow the opening of multiple files as thumbnails along the left side of the dialog when run with CS5.  It also allows saving JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files, in addition to DNG.
    Perhaps you should have updated to Photoshop CS5 instead of Elements 9.

  • Confused Re: Responsive Design Layout

    It appears that I missed the change in Dreamweaver's layouts in my recent upgrades. I used to be able to choose php, and I could then choose between single-column, one or two sidebars, with or without headers and footers, fixed, liquid, etc.
    Now I have Dreamweaver CC, and I can only choose one or two sidebars / fixed width. If I opt for a Fluid Grid Layout instead, there are no options for headers, footers or sidebars - and it apparently doesn't work with PHP. If I change the extension from .html to .php, then I can't write PHP code in it. (The PHP tags aren't highlighted red, at least.
    So I'm thoroughly confused.
    I have several websites with a variety of page types. I started experimenting with responsive design some time ago and generally have the hang of it, but I'd like to start fresh with a new layout, which will hopefully fix a few problems. All of my pages have a header and footer. Most have just one column or one sidebar (usually right), but a few have two sidebars.
    Anyway, can anyone suggest some good layouts to get me started? (I'm using a Mac with Mavericks and MAMP.)

    In fact, I've been thinking about upgrading to WordPress or Drupal one of these days, but it looks like Bootstrap does a lot of the things they do.
    Bootstrap is just a responsive framework unlike Wordpress and Drupal which are first and foremost Content Management Systems where developers produce 'template themes' - most now responsive.
    Bootstrap as far as I'm aware is not a CMS.
    If you want good looking out of the box design themes then dive into Wordpress it might be for you. Personally I don't like the bloat you get with it and the code either.

  • Still Confused with Previews, Thumbnails etc.

    Hi All,
    So i'm very new to Aperture, and that business about JPEG previews and thumbnails still has me thoroughly confused. So i understand that when you are shooting RAW, when you hit the play button, what you see in the rear screen is the JPEG preview. So when you first view your photos on a computer without importing, is this the same preview? When you then double click onto the photo again without importing, is this the RAW or the JPEG? After importing, without clicking, are you seeing the same JPEG preview or a completely new thumbnail?
    I know if you then double click a photo, Aperture processes the photo into actual RAW file. Thing is, this file is very different to the JPEG preview, the photo you saw on the rear screen of your camera. Some are even cropped substantially so that you lose some sky or part of a building. Is this normal? Is there then a way to retain or revert to the JPEG preview you preferred?
    Many thanks,

    So i understand that when you are shooting RAW, when you hit the play button, what you see in the rear screen is the JPEG preview.
    Because the word preview has a paerticular meaning in Aperture (See below) I'll say, yes that's correct but what you see is a Jpeg Version of the photo. In other words, the camera has processed the Raw and applied various fixes and filters and that's what it shows you.
    So when you first view your photos on a computer without importing, is this the same preview?
    Yes, to save time Aperture will try read that version rather than generate one of its own.
    When you then double click onto the photo again without importing, is this the RAW or the JPEG?
    What app are you viewing it with now? Aperture? Something else?
    After importing, without clicking, are you seeing the same JPEG preview or a completely new thumbnail?
    Depends on what you have chosen in the Aperture -> preferences -> Importing pane.
    I know if you then double click a photo, Aperture processes the photo into actual RAW file.
    No it doesn't, and it's a really big distinction. Aperture processes nothing. When you view a photo Aperture is just  showing you the Raw -  the unprocessed image that the camera version is based on.
    If the camera is cropping and radically altering the image from the raw to the jpeg then I think you need to look at the camera settings. I can't think why a camera would choose to crop a photo when processing it.

  • Confused about pixel aspect ratio and video size

    Hello,
    I have edited a whole dvd full of video and exported it as MPEG-2  NTSC DV Wide - it says 720 x 480, 29.97 fps. I have brought these into Encore and am trying to make a menu but can't seem to get the menu size right. Since I chose the wide format when making the video, which aspect ratio should I use in Encore? It gives me a choice in the properties menu, but when I go to Project settings it says Codec: MPEG-2 Dimensions 720 x 480. Whenever I bring in a menu background from photoshop, it doesn't fit, and is further complicated by the pixel aspect ratio thing. I have no idea what my background size should be to make it fit properly - the templates seem to all be the 4:3 size. What size should I be using in Photoshop and which pixel aspect ratio?
    Is my video codec going to cause me a problem in Encore? I assumed that most tvs nowadays are widescreen (at least not square), so I should do the video wide as well.
    Thanks for any help! I am thoroughly confused.

    Use a template menu from Encore's library. Then modify as you need. That way you know that it will be the right pixel size and par. You cannot made an incorrectly sized/par'd menu work by setting it to 16:9 or 4:3 in the menu properties. It must be correct, and if so, Encore will usually pick the correct setting.
    The Encore project settings for DVD really have no choices: it has to be  720x480 for NTSC. There is no project setting for par. You have to create the menu correctly - just let Encore do that for you by using a template.
    Was your video source widescreen? If so, then you'll be fine on your video. If not, you may need to sort that out also.

  • Confused about download

    hello... im a student and i need to download sql for the purpose of creating a database and then linking it with a vb project...
    can anyone pls help me and tell me what exactly should i download for the same..
    i am thoroughly confused..
    thanks.

    You'll need a database. Sounds like you want Oracle 10g Express Edition. That is the free-to-use version that is missing some Enterprise features such as partitioning and has a couple of other minor limitations (see here for an overview of the product), but is otherwise the same as the full Enterprise Edition. it also comes with Application Express (Oracle's rapid web development tool) pre-installed. Or you could download Enterprise Edition itself, which is also free to play around with as long as you're not running commercial applications on it.

  • Sharing one iTunes library across multiple accounts on the same Mac

    Hello, I've poked around at some of the posts dealing with sharing one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac but it seems like this can only be done if the libary is moved to a shared folder. I realize this can be done but I was trying to share it the way it is described in a post on Apple support (See link below.). That post seemed to imply that you don't have to move the library from its original location (owned by account A, e.g.), rather just make a couple preference changes in the accounts, use fast user switching and voila. That doesn't seem to work. So my question is this: Is the only way to share one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac to move it to a shared folder? I'm running 10.4.8 on an Intel iMac. Thanks in advance!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

    After reading this and several other related threads, I am becoming thoroughly confused about all of this. I have a situation similar to the one that pokerpal described in the post dated January 7 at 8:06 pm, except that the music files on my system are located on an external hard drive. Everything else is pretty much the same though - I am the admin user (and the main iTunes user and maintainer) and my girlfriend is a standard user who has no music in her own iTunes library. She can see and listen to and make playlists from and sync her iPod with the music in this library from her account, and I can do the same thing, independent of her, from my account. And if I make a change to information within a song, she doesn't see it, and vice versa, and I understand that. What I don't understand is why when I add a song or an album to the music files by importing a CD or downloading something from the iTunes Music Store, she has no way of knowing that unless I tell her, and then she can add it to her library by using the "Add to Library" function. Is there no way of automatically updating her library files to add the new song(s)? We have almost 15,000 songs and videos in that library, and I don't even want to think about what might have to happen if the answer to my question is "no." Interestingly enough, if I put an update to a Word document in the same exact location (on the hard drive), we can update that and pass it back and forth all day - why is that such a difficult task for iTunes to accomplish?
    Sorry I went on so long, but this has been building up for some time, and none of the solutions I've read about here have really been of any help, so I'm a bit frustrated and, as I said at the beginning, confused.

  • How do you make the most of any "free" services/ca...

    I wonder if we can get a consensus of views that could contribute to a sticky on how to get the best value for money from BTBBA (and the other BT services that this is based upon).
    I'm constantly confused so please excuse my ignorance:
    Calls:
    We have three family members on different mobile numbers, all using the same account. We're on 600 minutes - and this usually does for all of us. I'm on the HTC s620; my wife is on an old vanilla Nokia (don't ask) and my daughter is getting our new HTC Hero ("free") upgrade.
    We all try to make calls to other mobiles from our mobiles (to make the best use of the included minutes from the 600 minute monthly allowance).
    We also have a BT Broadband Talk account on our land-line, so when at home we tend to make calls to other landlines from our landline in the "free" periods. I assume that BTBBT is cheaper than standard BT Option 1 for land-line calls out of the free period, but I really don't know for sure!
    Even in the Broadband Talk free periods we make calls to other mobiles on our own mobiles as we assume that - even if we go over our 600-minute allowance, these inter-mobile calls will still be cheaper from a mobile than via BTBBT. Is that correct?
    I often link my s620 to the wi-fi network at home for casual (slow) web browsing, and then find that - on the odd occasion that someone calls us on our Broadband Talk number, my mobile will ring as well! I can live with that!
    As a previous BT Fusion user I was used to the idea that I could multiply my free minutes by calling on my mobile through the hub, but that's old hat now. I'm given to understand that the new benefit is that I can make calls via BT Openzone, but I don't know if these cost me or not? And what about BT Fon - if I can find a FON connection and make a call, does that cost, or not?
    If we don't use our 600 minutes in any one month I assume that the surplus rolls over. All of them, or is there a roll-over cap? If I roll over 100 minutes after month 1, and then have 150 minutes unused at the end of month 2, how many minutes will be rolled over to month 3?
    Texts:
    We have a big family text allowance, although having added some text blocks I'm a bit confused about the total allowance as the bill is so complicated to read. It seems we have 400 free texts included in the 600 minute bundle. To that I've added one or two blocks of texts; there's a bill entry for BT Mobile: 200 texts, and also a bill entry for BT Mobile: 300 Texts as well as an entry for the 400 Free Texts. However I'm only being billed for a BT Mobile: 200 Texts Bundle. Not complaining! Of course this could be because I upgraded part way through a month from 200 to 300 extra - but I'm thoroughly confused!
    Data:
    We've been super cautious about data. I switched to my current s620 (unused by my wife who didn't like the form factor) when my s710 started to fall apart. When I tried to activate this phone its software needed to be completely updated (not surprising as it had sat unused in its box for 16 months). A very patient lady from BT remotely connected to my PC to assist in getting the correct software on to the s620. However, she omitted to tell me that the default state would mean that all my emails would be flooding on to the s620 and I'd incur a whopping data bill as we only have the bundled free 10MB of Data. BT Customer Service have since done two credits - spanning two bills - for over £60 + VAT for erroneous data charges resulting from my software upgrade. For that I am very thankful!!
    Now that the HTC Hero is about to arrive I've decided to subscribe to the £5 Data charge for an  extra 500MB per month. I s that correct  - total allowance will now be 510MB?
    From what I've heard it is not easy to monitor your own account's data use. Is there an App for the Hero? Can I check anywhere from the HTC s620?
    What is the best strategy for getting free Data on the Hero? I'm assuming that the following is free - (a) connecting via WiFi on your own BT Home Hub (or someone else's BT Hub with their PIN/permission); (b) connecting via BT FON (c) using one's free monthly allowance on BT Openzone - how much data or time is this, and is it cost-effective to add to this data allowance, compared with overshooting on the BTBBA 500MB allowance?
    Other tips:
    As well as providing some responses and/or confirmation for the above, does anyone have some more tips for how to get the best value for money out of BT, with a mix of:
    BT land line
    BT Home Hub 2.0
    BT Broadband Talk account
    BT BBA To Go Mobile account
    Voice
    Text
    Broadband (we're on Option 3)
    Mobile Data via BT BBA To Go (Also, would a mobile dongle be a worthwhile/cost-eeffective back-up if you were about to go over the 500MB limit? Although I agree with everyone else who would like a larger allowance available than 500MB - especially on a 600 minute bundle being shard by two or three users)
    BT Vision
    I pay a lot to BT every month and I still don't regard myself as anywhere near expert enough in how to use/combine the services for the best value for our money.
    HELP Please!!!

    Wow!
    I'm not going to be of much use regarding answers but I sure am going to watching this post like a hawk for any replies. My package is a slightly diluted version of this and I do find the BBtalk and data limits hard to make the most of as well.
    If nothing else this totally highlights how complicated BT have managed to make their packages.
    A cynic would assume that they are trying to catch us out at every step and for us to either be overspending or not really getting the moneys worth.

  • Screen goes black constantly, okay with Windows

    My mid-2010 21.5" iMac has been having issues for a while now.  The screen goes black randomly.  This happens anywhere from once a week to once every two seconds for days on end.  I've done plenty of research and seen similar problems but no real solutions.
    Symptoms:
    Screen goes to sleep.  Shine a flashlight on it, can still see stuff, so it's just the backlight out.
    It'll either happen at startup, before the Apple logo, or after using for a while.
    Using a hot corner or keyboard shortcut will temporarily wake it up.
    If watching video, sound still plays even though screen is black.
    Had it in a 60 degree room with A/C blasting on it, no change.
    Tried resetting PRAM, SMU.
    Hardware test was fine, but I can't do this when it's not actually working.
    External monitor works fine.
    Really weird-  this does not happen with Windows XP.  It runs fine.  So maybe a software problem?  BUT, the problem occurs when booting from Install DVD.  So maybe not a software problem.  I was going to wipe and re-install but can't even do that due to it blacking out.
    I've had it in and they replaced the LCD, didn't help.
    I wish it would just permanently stop working so it'd be easier to figure out, as it is, the intermittent nature is driving me nuts.  Can anyone please help?

    I meant SMC, not "SMU".  Oops.
    billkline, thanks for the input, the fact that Windows works has really got me scratching my head.  That's when I went to reinstall OS X but couldn't when it blacked out on the Snow Leopard Install DVD.  Thoroughly confused now.
    Also, starting tonight it now hangs on the gray startup screen for thirty seconds before booting up.  This usually is a one or two seconds before getting the Apple logo.

  • Animated gif background - Won't animate!

    I have a website which my partner and I have created. I'm really happy with what we have achieved EXCEPT I am trying to add an animated star gif background which is stationary even when I've published it. I've searched so many places for the solution that I'm now thoroughly confused as to if this is possible.
    The website is http://www.billieanthony.co.uk and I have added the animated gif to the welcome page only (black/blue stars) to see if it works (which to me doesn't). I added the gif via the page inspector layout section. The other pages only have a static background.
    Any comment gratefully received even if it's only to say it can't be done.
    Many thanks
    Kevin

    Step one to enable the community to help debug what you're encountering would be to provide the URL for the page where the GIF is being used. My first guess would be there are effects applied to the image (i.e. inner glow, bevel, etc.) that require Muse to re-encode the image and Muse does not support encoding animated .gif. It only supports passing animated .gif files through unchanged. (And to get an image to pass through unchanged it needs to have no effects that require rasterization applied in Muse.)
    Given you've stated the GIF file is 7.5Mb I have to question your choice of .gif. At 7.5Mb this single file will take ~8 seconds to download on the average US broadband connection and will be much slower for many broadband users and most cellular users. GIF is a reasonable choice for very small short animations used sparingly, but is seldom (if ever) a good choice for larger or longer animations. Better choices for those are to use a video or a tool like Edge Animate to create a HTML5/CSS3 animation. The end result will be vastly more user friendly in terms of page load performance.
    A huge percentage of first time visitors to a webpage will cancel the page load rather than waiting 8+ seconds for the page load to complete.

  • Gif decoding/LZW troubles

    Hi. As a project, I'm trying to write a GIF parser that takes a file as an input and displays the image as output. I've been going pretty steadily through the GIF documentation and etc. etc. I've been looking at "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF#Example_.gif_file" and I've recreated the image file that wikipedia gives the bytes for.
    Now, here's my problem: the raster data that the GIF contains doesn't make sense. I'm using a very simple 3x5 GIF image that has one black pixel in the top corner and one black pixel directly below and to the left.
    http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1/hellochar/exampleshow.jpg
    For those of you unfamiliar with GIF, the image data is stored using the LZW compression algorithm, which saves space by compressing multiple pixels into single entries. The encoded data is "00 51 FC 1B 28 70 A0 C1 83 01 01". Taking a look at the actual bits, the data is (underscores seperate the bytes)
    00000000_01010001_11111100_00011011_00101000_01110000_10100000_11000001_10000011 _00000001_00000001
    I'm supposed to be reading 9 bit codes, as per the GIF specification. Each code corresponds to a list of pixels to be output. For instance, if I read the hex code "0x028", that translates to color 40, which maps to a black pixel. So I'd output a black pixel. The map starts with predefined mappings for codes 0-255, and special treatment for codes 256 and 257. More mappings are created as you read through the data. If I'm reading 9 bits per code, the data looks like this (underscores seperate the 9 bit codes)
    000000000_101000111_111100000_110110010_100001110_000101000_001100000_110000011_0000 00010_0000001
    The first code I read is 0, which is at the start of every GIF raster data stream. The next code I read is "101000111", which is code #327. That doesn't make sense though, because I don't have a mapping for code #327 yet. #327 doesn't exist. What is going on? Also, there's that last 7 bits that I'm not sure what to do about.
    I wrote my own LZW compressor to help me, and plugged in the pixels to see the data that came out of it. My compressor uses the exact same algorithm that is described by the various GIF documentations I have looked at
    http://www.martinreddy.net/gfx/2d/GIF-comp.txt
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LZW
    http://www.dspguide.com/ch27/5.htm
    The coded raster data that was outputted was different than the one saved in the GIF file;
    Bits found in GIF file
    00000000010100011111110000011011001010000 11100001010000011000001100000110000000100000001
    Bits given by algorithm
    1000000000001010000111111111000000111000 00010100000011100000110100000111100000001
    They're even of different lengths sizes!
    If I plugged the bits given by the algorithm into my GIF parser, it decoded the data with no problem. It almost seems like the GIF's data was encoded using a different algorithm! (I just used Microsoft Paint to make the GIF). But there's no way that's possible; I know that there's something wrong with the decompressor, even though I followed the documentation to the letter.
    Here's the code for the decompressor:
         void readImageData(InputStream fio, int{} table) throws Exception {
              println("Reading image data...");
              curBlock = readBlock(fio); //reads the raster data.
              dictionary = new LinkedList<List<Integer>>();
              for (int i : table) {
                   List<Integer> l = new LinkedList<Integer>();
                   l.add(i);
                   dictionary.add(l);
              dictionary.add(new LinkedList()); //placeholder for clr
              dictionary.add(new LinkedList()); //placeholder for end
              println("Starting code size: " + codeSize);
              int oldCode = readBits(codeSize);
              output(dictionary.get(oldCode));
              int curCode;
              println();
              while (index < curBlock.length) {
                   curCode = readBits(codeSize);
                   List<Integer> string;
                   int c = 0;
                   if(curCode < dictionary.size()) {
                        print("Code exists -- ");
                        string = dictionary.get(curCode);
                   else {
                        print("Code doesn't exist -- ");
                        string = dictionary.get(oldCode);                                                        //line 177
                        string.add(c); //this shouldn't happen on the first run.
                   output(string);
                   c = string.get(0);
                   List<Integer> entry = new LinkedList(dictionary.get(oldCode));
                   entry.add(c);
                   addToDictionary(entry);
                   oldCode = curCode;
                   println();
              loop();
         byte[] curBlock;
         List<List<Integer>> dictionary;
         int codeSize;
         void addToDictionary(List<Integer> str) {
              dictionary.add(str);
              if(dictionary.size() > pow(2, codeSize)) codeSize++;
         Here's the output of the program:
    Reading image data...
    Reading block of size 11
    Starting code size: 9
    Read code 0(9) -- output (0, 0, 0) --

    I know this is all quite convoluted, but I'm thoroughly confused at this point. What is going on?!
