Those USB Wireless receiver things!!

Hello all,
Apple forum virgin so please be gentle. As the title suggests I am pretty much a computer fool! Hopefully this next question will be a doddle for you all.
I have a home wireless network set up and want to set up our (rather old) Imac. It runs on OSX, doesn't have an internal wireless modem and doesn't have USB 2 sockets.
My question is do any of the usb wireless toggle type things that you seem to be able to get for pc's work on Macs without USB2 sockets? If so which ones/brands?
I am sorry for the vagueness of the info but none of the so called 'experts' in my local stores seem to know. I believe that I could use a mac airport but these retail at around £70, I only paid £250 for the machine about 5 years ago so doesn't seem worth it.
Any help advice is appreciated. Oh yeah I cannot move the router, no telephone sockets nearby.
Thanks in advance.
Carl.
The Computer Fool.

Hello,
I actually managed to get a brand new Airport card on ebay a few weeks ago for my mother's iBook for £35 so the prices are dropping (This was the seller (link)). Unfortunately you would also need the "Airport card adaptor" for the iMac 600MHz, which can be difficult to find.
You could look at:
HomePlugs. These are 14 or 85MBps connections that use your home electrical wiring as network connectivity. One example (link).
Ethernet / Wifi adaptor. These are both standalone or built-in to many routers (also known as Wireless Bridge or Wireless Access Point). One example (link). Many wireless routers should allow this to work too but it's worth checking with the OEM first: (routers are more advanced devices but the market is such that they are often cheaper than access points alone)
Example (link).
USB/ Wireless adaptor. Some work well but many are unreliable, and are limited to 802.11b speeds (11Mbps) on an iMac 600MHz due to the USB1.1 ports. The drivers are usually the most problematic aspect. Example (link).

  • Those usb wireless internet card things ...?

My father's been pushing me to find a more budget friendly alternative to our current internet situation. We're connected with a DSL modem, it's not wireless.
He's been asking me about the usb wireless internet cards that he's seen on TV, like the ones that AT&T promote in their "find the internet everywhere" commercials.
Now, I'm finding that the service for these cards is more expensive then what we're paying now, so we probably won't be purchasing this sort of service any time soon, but I am confused as to what exactly it is.
I'm assuming that if I had one of these cards that I could get rid of the box that's connected to the wall (the modem that I connect my computer to to get the internet). But as I'm researching this I'm finding that there are "wireless internet cards" cards that allow older computers to connect to wireless modems (something that my computer can do... that most new computers can do). I would think that these wireless internet cards are different from the wireless internet devices that I'm looking for. (but maybe they're not?) I'm really confused.
If anyone could shed some light on these cards I'd be grateful Thank you!

The wireless internet cards are different. They, for all practical purposes, are a cellphone of sorts that you attach to your computer and then it dials into the network (AT&T's, Verizon's, Sprint, etc.) and provides you with internet service just like a cellphone gives you phone service. They work just about anywhere again just like a cellphone.
AT&T's Laptop Connect cards seem to be primarily in the ExpressCard form factor, which Apple only supports in the MacBook Pro right now. They also have the older PC Cards that might work with older Apple notebooks (I think). Then there's the USB version.

This seems to be designed for business customers. I couldn't find anything suggesting that this is made available to the regular consumer market.

  • HT202124 Is plug in a USB wireless receiver (Logitech Unifying Receiver) prevents Macbook Pro Retina going to standby mode?

As the title implies, is this prevent Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2014) from going to standby mode? It's not convenience to unplug the wireless receiver every time I don't use the notebook though.

That kind of panic can be caused by an adapter for an external display that isn't connected to anything. See this thread.
There are also reports that the panic may be triggered by waking an external display from sleep. To test that theory, open the Energy Saver preference pane and click the lock icon to unlock the settings, if necessary. Move the Display sleep slider all the way to the Never position on the right. See whether there's any change.

  • LOST USB WIRELESS NANO RECEIVER INSIDE OF COMPUTER

When inserting usb wireless nano receiver on the back of the screen on a touch smart computer.  I let loose of it and it fell inside of the computer.  I can't see it or know how to retreive it and am afraid to leave it there.  Can someone tell me how to find it and how to get the back off to retreive it.  Thank you.

To start this sounds like a computer issue and you are on a printer forum, but I think I can still help. You should be able to remove one of the sides of your desktop tower with a screwdriver and access the internal compartment. Here you should be able to retreive that piece.
Let me know how this goes and I wil get right back in touch with you!

PS I hope you have a wonderful day and a fantastic weekend!

  • Can anyone recommend a good wireless receiver? Airport dead

My airport will only receive 56k speeds (see massive, 12,000 views+ thread which apple seem to be ignoring for more on this issue...). I've tried to shop around today for a wireless receiver to just plug into the USB port so i can disable the Airport altogether, but i'm really struggling to find a Mac compatible one. The only one i could find was one of those teeny tiny micro-sized USB plug-ins which are only really decent for very light web browsing. I need something which can download huge files without any trouble.
I'd really appreciate any help. I'm so frustrated by this internet issue i'm thinking of just ebaying the damned thing and never looking back.

    They have them at OWC

Hi, Jake. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It's possible that your AirPort card has fizzled out on you. AirPort card failure doesn't happen very often, but it happened to me once, and it was very frustrating.
We diagnosed what was wrong with mine by my husband swapping his AirPort card with mine. Then my iBook would connect, but his wouldn't, so we knew it was the card.
Will the iBook work on any wireless network? Do you have someone with whom you could swap cards to see if that's the problem?

Have you tried using the other USB port? If neither port works, try plugging in a USB mouse to see if it works to confirm that your USB ports aren't damaged.
Have you installed any new software? Maybe a Security Update or something similar? Sometimes that will break functionality of third-party drivers.
You may need to go to the website of the manufacturer of the USB wireless device to see if an updated driver is available.

When did you buy it, Jake?
There is a driver that was released on June 19, 2007.

Even if this is the one you have installed, you may want to reinstall it.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Since Jake hasn't posted in over two months, either that driver worked for him, he found the answer elsewhere, or he gave up. Since he hasn't posted back, we have no way of knowing.

Since you're running Leopard, I surmise that your iMac takes the AirPort Extreme card?
May I ask why you don't just get one of those? As I post this, the Apple Store has a refurbished one for $29.00.

I am not running Leopard... using 10.4 and I already own the product. It is suppose to work and there is no reason to purchase another unit. All I need to understand is how to make the IMac recognize the USB device or how to configure the unit. Others have stated in this and other forums that they have used this unit with success.
Thanks for address this specific issue.

Your specifications at the bottom of your post state that you're running Mac OS X 10.5.1?
You may want to post in the Internet and Networking your iMac (Flat Panel) Forum. Maybe someone there can help you out. (You've posted in the iBook G3 Forum.)

I am using a laptop to connect to the internet not the machine that I am writing about. If I could do that I would not need any help. I will check out the other forum but this thread is on topic.
    Mac OS X (10.5.1)

The information in your thread references an iBook quite a lot but the title of this post says iMac so I going to assume that you are trying to use this device with an iMac.
It is also unclear what version of the Mac OS you are using.
Let's start by stating the fact that these USB networking networking devices are not inherently supported by the Mac OS. Therefore they need drivers. These drivers are usually fragile and only work with a well defined version (or versions) of the Mac OS. Anytime that you make any upgrade to the Mac you are able to create an incompatibility with the driver and the device.
The Belkin F5D9050 does have some Mac OS drivers available at this link.
You should uninstall/remove the current driver for this device.
    Restart your iMac.
Download and install the appropriate driver for the version of Mac OS on your iMac.
    Restart your iMac.
If that doesn't work, either get the original AirPort card for the internal wireless slot in the iMac or get an Ethernet wireless adapter. An Ethernet wireless adapter requires no drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device.

  • MacBook, USB wireless antenna, and tethered iPhone 4: Can the iPhone use the antenna?

I have a late 2008 MacBook, a USB wireless antenna (Etekcity High Power 802.11 B/N/G 300M USB Wireless 1000mw Wifi Network Adapter with Dual Antenna), and a USB-tethered iPhone 4. My cell signal is often very poor, and when it is, trying to use the Internet on my iPhone is an exercise in futility.
Can the iPhone use the wireless antenna as an external antenna by, in effect, using the MB as a pass-through device or signal booster? I'd have the iPhone at one end of the chain, connected to the MB via USB, the MB in the middle, and the external antenna on the other end, also via USB.
Is there an app for that? Or are we talking about sending/receiving completely different signals?

Max, I just got the etekcity usb antenna thing and I can't find the mac adapter.  Can you tell me which driver you're using?  (the cd that comes with it doesn't seem to work).
    Thanks!

  • Recommend wireless receiver/dongle for 0s 9.1 on PPC7200

    Hi
I've been dusting off my 7200/120 running OS 9.1 and have installed a Dolphin USB 2.0 pci card and Targus powered hub. I'm wanting to connect the 7200 via wireless to my physical LAN in the other side of the house and have installed a NetComm Super-G Wireless Gateway NB600W. The NetComm works perfectly with a PBG4/OS X 10.4.10 running Airport.
The 7200's USB is working well and have a number of peripherals running OK including a Logitech LX5 cordless optical mouse (running Logitech's MouseWare software) and Iomega USB Zip drive etc and all work OK. Last thing I need is a wireless receiver either as USB dongle or some sort of device. I've tried a D-Link DWL-G122 dongle but struck out finding any OS 9 drivers.
    can anybody recommend anything? TIA

The DWL-G122 (there are a number of similar devices on the market) mentioned by Claudio Pompili connects to a USB port. This can be useful for computers without built-in wireless capabilities or without a PC Card slot. Since USB is not primarily intended for networking (and since the Mac drivers may be difficult to find), an Ethernet wireless bridge (sometimes called a gaming adapter) is often a better solution.

  • Issues with usb wireless adapter

    Hi
    Please excuse my ignorance.
I have an imac (about 2 years old) with a built in airport card. I am trying to use a usb wireless adapter. It has a realtek rtl8187. we have a wifi network here that works with my pc using this adapter but i cant get it to work on the mac. You have to sling the adapter on the window sill but it picks it up fine.
I have installed the supplied software (obviously the mac one!) and it installs the software and driver. After i have restarted, and plug the thing in, it tells me to turn on my wlan card on the supplied software?? It shows up in the listing on network settings as ethernet adapter ((null)). I cannot find any setting to turn on my wireless card, i thought that was airport?
The airport picks up the network but the signal is too weak to connect, hence the adapter with a bit more guts....
I have this beautiful mac, colecting dust and am having to use a pc!
If i connect the usb adapter without installing the software, it constantly has a box popping up in network settings saying that an external device has changed settings! it doesnt stop doing it, until you delete the location...
Can anyone help? I may be being thick and dont have a wlan card or something or airport will not allow me to use this thing. I only just started getting into macs when i moved to spain, where it has sat colecting dust for 3 months.
    I would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks
    Richard

Cisco makes a router that is good for two-story homes.  I have used it for several years.  My router / hotspot is on the second floor and my Blu-ray player and laptop are on the first floor.  Both work extremely well with the router.  They also make a USB, AM10, that works very nicely with a desktop without a wireless card.

Unfortunately, you received incorrect information. The USB port on the Time Capsule will only support a printer and/or hard drive. Modems are not supported.

  • Windows downloading data unnecessarily from the internet when connected to wireless (wifi connection) or USB wireless 3G connection

    Hello Team/windows Experts,
I need help from  you people on this issue that i am facing. I tried to find out the exact reason behind this, however i am not successful on this.
    Here is the issue:
I recently re-formatted my laptop and re-installed windows 8.1. After that, I installed only couple of software program i.e. Mozilla Firefox and installed Bit defender total security 2015 and I updated my Antivirus software. I have two ISP connections, one
is USB 3G wireless connection and another one is a normal wired connection to which a wireless router is connected (wifi connection).
Now, this is what I have seen happening. The moment i connect to the 3G usb wireless connection and even if i don't open any browser or website, I see that the data is being downloaded and i can see enormous amount of data being downloaded for no reason
and I couldn't find as to what is being downloaded to my system. One can imagine and understand 10-15 Mb downloaded in couple of minutes and the connection sitting idle and not downloading anything later is fine, but if nothing is being accessed/browsed and
still seeing 200-300 mb data being downloaded is something to be watched for.
The same situation was seen when i enabled my wireless connection from another ISP provider (wifi) and don't know within a minute or so 50 MB data was consumed and to see what its actually doing, i waited for another 5 -10 minutes and huge data was downloaded
    (may be another 100-200 MB).
Now before using my internet connection, I have done the following to ensure that unnecessary data is not downloaded from both USB 3G and wifi connection:
    1. I don't run any torrents. They are absent.
    2. I disabled automatic windows update
    3. I have disabled live tiles so that consant update to the windows app tiles are off.
    4. I have turned metered connection on for both the networks.
    5. I don't download anything from internet unless very important related to my studies. I do very normal browsing.
I am pretty sure that antivirus signatures are not more than 5 mb or so (they are even smaller in files), so they won't eat that much data.
If at all, I have to see what is being downloaded to my system, where can i find that detail/information?
How should I stop this from happening as i have to watch my 3g USB stats every now and then to see if its downloading lot of data or not?
As this is a recently formatted system, I don't see any malware/virus issues as I have my system protected. Although now software can protect the system fully, but still i haven't access/browsed any website that might cause issues to my system. However,
this is something i am trying to find out and if you guys can help/suggest me, it would be great.
    Warm Regards,
    R Janak Sundhar

    Hello Janak,
       1. make absolutely sure windows update is disabled, for this test.
       2.  Disable windows defender etc. for this test.
       3.  go though  programs and features and remove anything that is not needed or you thing might be sucking bandwidth.
        4.  hit CTRL ALT DEL, select task manager, more details, startup tab and disable everything as a possible cause of your issue.
See if any of this makes a difference.

  • WoW Headset Stolen Wireless Receiver

    Greetings,
I bought my WoW Headset from Amazon, and i didn't had any problems, but i took them to a convention and somehow my wireless receiver was stolen.
Mailed Creative labs several times, their answer is they don't have parts and can't replace my functioning headset for another for little money, they want me to buy another one.
So, I have a some of questions:
    - Is there a way to make them work with the usb cord that is included? I don't mind using them this way.
    - Can i use another wireless receiver from another wow headset? If so will someone who something else is not working will sell it to me?
    - Can i buy a 3rd part wireless receiver that can work with my headset?
Please help me, I really don't want to buy a whole new headset for something that could be replaced at a lower cost.
    Thanks
    Faustino Cantu

  • USB Wireless Headset Not Working

I am a medical transcriptionist and I use a Plantronics CS50 USB wireless head set to listen to my dictations. Ever since I installed the latest upgrade for Bootcamp a few days ago, I cannot plug in my USB plug and have the sound coming through the head set and not through the Mac built in speakers. I have Win XP SP3 installed on my Windows side. Before the upgrade, my set up was working fine. Now, I have to plug in some clunky, heavy earmuff head phones into the back port of the Mac in order to hear my doctor clearly. The culprit seems to be the Realtek Audio program. I uninstalled it, and it really messed up the computer! I ended up re-installing it. I went into the Program Preferences on the Mac side and selected USB Headset as my default for ITunes, etc. It worked fine. But I still am having the same problem on the Windows side. Can someone please help me to be able to set up the computer so that my USB headset bypasses the internal speakers and allows me to hear my dictations through my wireless headset? I would really appreciate the excellent help that I know comes from Mac users. By the way, I'm a Mac newbie. Our last Apple computer was an Apple IIC from WAY back when.... thanks in advance. I appreciate it.

I am not sure, but I've tried it again.
It seems I am stupid, I should wait for a few seconds, or try more times, because it works this time when I plug in my usb kb. I can even wake up mac while it is in sleep mode.
Just one thing is different this time. the USB KB NumLock is off when I plug it in. Previously I remember the NumLock is on.
Thank you for telling me that USB KB is still working I regret to shutdown my mac previously.

  • I need USB wireless adaptor any suggestions?

I am connected to the internet via an ethernet cable, no wireless here. So I cannot use my iPad, can I use  a USB wireless adaptor? what type? any suggestions as all of the USB adaptors on the market seem to be for Windows. I am in Pune India, where can I buy a suitable adaptor?

I am on a large ethernet network so a little worried about 'opening' it's internet connection, should I be?
Well, a USB wireless adapter would do the same thing as the link I provided. Basically, anyone within about 10 to 15 meters of your computer would be able to access the wireless network.
An Aiport Extreme base station would allow security options to restrict access to a specific devices, require passwords, encryption, etc. If this is a business environment the best thing to do would be to talk to the IT department for an official solution.

  • D-Link USB wireless adapter

I have a D-Link wireless router and USB dongle package, it works with my windows laptops perfectly well.
I am looking for a way to use the USB wireless dongle with a G5 tower so I can use the Mac as a web machine.
There is a software driver for the dongle but I have no idea what information on the different tabs I should enter, so any ideas what this should be?
The user manual is for windows, there is information on how to set up for Mac, despite the inclusion of the Mac driver on the CD.
The dongle is a D-Link DWA-111, user manual here:
    ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/wireless/dwa-111/DWA-111ManualEnglish.pdf
    thanks for any help

    hi....
i use a d-link dwl g122 dongle that has the same RT73 ralink chip.
the d-link driver that came with the CD just did one thing to my G5 powermac: kernelpanic!
after some searching on the web i found out, that it is best not to use the d-link driver at all, but to use the original ralink driver for the chip provided here:
    http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=3
load the "USB(RT257X/RT2671/RT2500)" driver. that's the driver, that will give you the wireless utility as it is shown in BD's picture.
before you install it, make sure that you uninstall the d-link driver completely. there should be an uninstaller in the dmg or zip file, that was on the CD.
then install the ralink driver and after that connect your d-link dongle. the wireless utility should pop up after a minute or so, but first you've to go to the network preference pane and confirm, that there is a new port detected.
then you can go back to the wireless utility, that by then should be searching for available wireless networks in the site survey tab. choose yours and enter the password when asked. after that safe the connection to a profile.
