Thought on Netgear WNR854T Gigabit N Router

Hi,
Curious on the user experience with the Netgear Gigabit Wireless N router. I'm leaning towards this router and I would like to know what you think about it.

I would avoid netgear products. I have used three new ones in the past 6 months and they all have one issue that is a deal breaker for me.
Their firewalls block ports 5190, 5220, 5222, etc.
These are essential iChat ports.
When I called and spoke with their customer service he told me what I wanted to do - have my computer, my brother, and my girlfriend on iChat - was a pro feature of the router. That to open ports for more than one internal IP was something that couldn't be done.
I personally really like Buffalo products if you like setting up things and having as much control as possible.
For 802.11N I went with Belkin's N1. I went through 5 routers in 7 days when trying to replace my old D-Link. I am very picky about my network products and extremely abusive in terms of bandwidth.
The Belkin N1 has been pushing an 8mbps connection to 4 wired devices and up to 8 wireless devices with mixed 802.11b/g/n simultaneously. This same use crashes most D-Link routers I've tried as well as EVERY Netgear router I tried in that week. The Belkin N1 has never crashed even when running heavy usenet and bit torrent, internal file sharing servers over obscure ports as well as general use. Highly recommended.

  • Netgear AC6300 N1750 Wireless Router Compatibility

Just looking for some feedback on the new Netgear AC6300 N1750 Wireless Router, is this a Verizon FiOS Friendly Router?
I currently have my FiOS internet set up as Ethernet out of the ONT instead of MoCA this was done several years ago, all is running fine until my existing Netgear N750 WNDR4000 died, and am looking to upgrade to the new AC6300 by Netgear.
Any Feedback would be appreciated as I hve had inpecable service out of the existing Netgear router I am using and thought since it is on its last legs I would keep with the same Mfg and go with the newest Model which is the AC6300 N1750.  Netgear claims it is fully compatible with Verizon FiOS however I waould like to hear it from the Verizon side of the house as well if it is true.
    Thank you again in advance

The term "FiOS compatible" is a lot like smoke and mirrors.  Since you have no requirement for MoCA capability, any reasonable quality wireless router of recent vintage will do the job, and do it well.  Be advised that the dual band capability of this device won't be beneficial just yet.  Also the ability to load third party firmware such as TomatoUSB or DDWRT is pretty much standard on higher quality routers these days.
According to the NewEgg page, this particular device has all the bells and whistles, and looks very good.  It's very attractive to boot.  However it costs nearly $200, so it really should be above average.  If you don't mind spending this much, you'll be just fine, FiOS or otherwise.

You don't have to do anything to the netgear.. the Express cannot wirelessly extend non-apple networks. You must plug the Express in by ethernet and create a new wireless network.. this can be the same name (SSID) and security as the netgear so it can become a roaming network.

I have a NETGEAR DM111PSP ADSL+2 router and a 1TB Time Capsule.  I continue to get a Double NAT status in the airport utility.  how do I need to configure the TC?  Tnx, Q

The TC needs to be configured in Bridge Mode since you already have another router "upstream" on the network.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the the TC icon, then click Edit
Click the Network tab at the top of the page
Insure that Router Mode is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
    Update to save the settings

  • Netgear Wireless-N 300 Router w/ DSL Modem on Verizon

Before I spend any money, can anyone advise if Verizon DSL is supported with the Netgear Wireless-N 300 Router w/ DSL Modem?

Well, answered my own question. Went ahead and got one. Only had to clone the MAC address from the Westell due to the screwed up DHCP scope that is used. Works like a champ.

  • Netgear WNR854T

Has anyone successfully connected to this router via an airport wireless connection. My niece just got a macbook, and I tried to help set her up to this modem her dad purchased. I am able to connect wirelessly her macbook to my older netgear wgr614 with no problem. I have my macbook and imac connected wirelessly as well to the wgr614 router with no problem. I do not know if its because this new router is the new b/g/n type or what. Would appreciate any feedback and/or setting parameters I may missed.

Maybe the Newer Netgear router is broken. Can anything connect?

Well when you first get ready to connect that new router to your ISP modem, turn off the modem for at least 5 minutes. First power on you router then connect the port from the modem to the WAN (Wide Area Network) port of the router. At this point connect to the router via Ethernet and log into that router (look into the router's manual how to do that) and make sure it's getting an IP from the ISP modem. After you confirmed the router gets an IP from the modem then at this point you can setup the wireless & security. Just make sure all your devices that use wireless can use security and the highest use the highest security all those devices can use.
Lastly try to connect to the router's wireless network (while still connected via Ethernet so you can check the router to make sure it sees the your Mac). If it does then you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and then the wireless (Airport card) should take over the connection.

  • AEBS gigabit as router keeps crashing.

I have been using my AEBS gigabit version as a switch and wireless access point for weeks with no problems at all. Now I am using as my router. I only have 2 macs connected to it.
The problem now is that find that my internet connection has gone down every couple of days. however when I launch the airport utility it says no base station found. If I try ping the IP of the base station I get no route to host.
The solution is to powercyle the base station. This is not acceptable as I use my network for commercial and private reasons.
I have now found out when the base station fails. It is when my incoming connection of 20megabits per second is maxed out and I have a large number of outgoing connections. The base station just stops routing. It still shows a green light however. This would suggest that the base station does not have enough processing power to handle an incoming connection like this as well as routing and NAT traversal.
My linksys wrt54g router cant handle a 20 megabit incoming connection either.
This is unfortunate as the base station works so well in other ways.
Has anyone else come across this? or may have a solution.
My long term plan is to build a robust linux router.

    Hi Tim Haigh-
Sounds like you are getting too deep.
You have a malfunctioning base station that is covered under warranty. Time to use it!

  • New netgear n600 dual band router

Trying to get iPad to connect wirelessly with no luck.   However in router monitor, I see the iPad is attached and getting IP#.
Mac connects wired with no issues.
Roku Box wired is also not working.
I had set SIDs with different names for frequencies as Apple suggests.
    Any tips?

You mentioned DHCP,  so I looked at settings closer.
It seemed on Mac book more information was supplied from DHCP,  like DNS server.
On iTouch and iPad the DNS was not being supplied.
I tried disabling DHCP on new router, but did not help.
But, what works is leaving new router as DHCP server and it hands out 10.x.x.x numbers.
Then in DHCP settings, I hard coded DNS server address.
Then reset all devices to force out new IP#s.    It worked!!!
The only think broke is my ROKU box.   I can't even get it working with old setup.  I had tried resetting with factory defaults and there were it broke it.   The device most likely has old DHCP IP lease number, however it seems with old setup I should be able to roll back.
But,  all the Apple stuff is working great with Netgear router.
Now, if I reboot DSL router and it ever tries to change DNS server,  it may break my new router.   But, I'll just have to remember that when it happens.  Hopefully dns server address doesn't change very often.

  • Hp c410 printer and netgear wnr 2500 wifi router

For the past 8 years, I have been using a linksys router.  Every night, I shutdown everything including the router and the internet modem.   The next morning I would re-start everything and the printer would automatically reconnect through the router.  I finally replaced the dinosaur of a router with a netgeat wnr 2500 wifi router.  Now when I shut down the router, I have to recreate the connection.  I have used both the manual method and the WPS method, and neither has held.  I have also had occasional problems with the connection being lost or being difficult to make.  I would appreciate any suggestions.
    This question was solved.

    Hey @iwilder,
I understand that since hooking up your new Netgear router your HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One C410a Printer fails to automatically reconnect to your network each morning as you disconnect all of your devices from power each night. However, your printer was able to automatically reconnect to your original Linksys router each day.  Because your printer does work fine once the wifi setup is run we know that the wireless card in your printer is functioning properly. I do believe that this issue is due to a setting conflict with the new Netgear router. I'm going to run you through some steps below to resolve this issue for you.
    Step 1: Connectivity:
When you plug in all your devices in the morning, ensure that you plug your router in first. Once the router is on and functioning, plug your printer in. If the printer is plugged in prematurely, your network connection wont be active on the router and will cause  your printer not to automatically reconnect to your network. Therefore, this may just be a case of not allotting enough time for your router to power on before plugging in your HP Photosmart.
    Step 2: Check Router Settings:
Certain settings on your router may cause your printer not to automatically reconnect. This doesn't meant that anything is 'wrong' with your router. It may just be that your router is doing its job too well and is not allowing your printer to automatically reconnect to the network as the printer is being seen as a 'threat'. To resolve this can I please have you ensure that the following ports are opened on your router and that the following settings are adjusted. If you're not sure how to adjust these settings on your own you may need to have Netgear support walk you through this.
    Incoming (UDP) Ports to Open:
    137, 138, 161, 427
    Outgoing (TCP) Ports to Open:
    137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
    Please also check:
    - Mac Filtering should be OFF
    - Firmware updated
    - Firewall may need to be 'off' for testing
Once these settings have been checked, please unplug your devices. Plug your router back in first. Allow your router at least 30 seconds to re-establish its network connection and then plug your printer back in to verify if the printer automatically reconnects to your network.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Netgear Modem and WRT54GL Router

    Hi all,
I have a wired network using a Netgear Modem and have recently decided to implement a wireless hotspot for users to connect via their wireless laptops etc.
Because of the DHCP facility in the WRT54GL router (allocating ip addresses automatically etc.), I was recommended to this route.
What I'm sitting with is that the Netgear Modem's default IP address is 192.168.0.1 and all my wired desktops are setup using IP addresses following on from that (e.g. 192.168.0.100 / 192.168.0.101 etc etc.)
The Linksys's default IP address is 192.168.1.1
I've managed to change that to 192.168.0.2 so that it can be seen on the same network, but now:-
1.) How do I access the router's adminstrative settings (previously it was : IE Browser > typing in 192.168.1.1 and inserting my username and password and I was in). When I go to IE Browser > typing in 192.168.0.2 it says it cannot "display the page" and no matter what I do, I cannot get to access it. I can ping the 192.168.0.2 address and replies so it is connected etc. Any suggestions?
Also, I've installed a 2nd PCI card in my server (that controls the internet access to the desktops etc.) and shared the internet connection from LAN1 (onboard motherboard network port). I've connected the Linksys WRT54GL Router via a cable from the LAN2 port to Port1 on the Linksys. Linksys DHCP setting is disabled as well. What should happen is that when a wireless laptop connects to the internet, the DHCP should allocate an IP address to the laptop and should be able to have access to the internet.
2.) On the wireless laptop, when searching for a wireless connection, I can see the Linksys Router and can connect. I have connection as Skype connects perfectly but yet, I cannot access the Internet. When typing in a website address, it comes up saying "Unable to Display Page". If I type in http://216.239.51.100 I get the google home page but if I type in the web address, nothing !! I have been told that it could be a DNS problem but no one can tell me how to fix it. Any suggestions?
Can anybody out there shed some light on these 2 issues?
    Thank you

  • Safari 5 causes Netgear DGN2000 ADSL modem/router to crash

I installed Safari 5 yesterday on my Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.3
The installation went fine. Almost immediately my modem/router crashed (I think due to a DNS problem) and I was unable to log into the router to reboot either from a Mac or from a PC. I need to power cycle the modem/router to re-establish my broadband connection. I've confirmed that this happens every time I launch Safari 5 after loading one or two pages from the net. My Macbook is fine if I stick to Chrome or Firefox. I have the beta (Gala) version of Adobe Flash player 10.1 installed and I'll check later whether uninstalling this solves the problem.

Safari 5 also crashing my netcomm NB6 adsl2 box. I have to reset it every half a dozen pages if I use safari 5. Firefox not causing the same problem.
I tried turning my develop menu off in Safari, it didn't help.
    It happened without using google.
It seems like pages with lots of links to different sites are more likely to cause it (though I've stopped using it now, and didn't test much). I don't like to speculate, its not my code, but I'm guessing it could be the DNS prefetch that got mentioned as a feature.

  • Few questions about Time Capsule

I'm getting a Time Capsule soon & have a few questions:
Could I use my old router (Netgear WNR854T Gigabit) somewhere else in the house to boost the wireless signal?
(My house is very long. The office (where the router is located) is at one end of the house & with my current N router & the signal doesn’t quite reach the other end of the house). If so are there instructions somewhere on setting this up?
Could I run the first Time Machine backup connected via ethernet then once the full backup is complete switch to backing up via AirPort?
If I attach a USB drive could I use Time Machine to backup to the USB drive & leave the storage on board the Time Capsule for other purposes, or can it only backup via Time Machine to the Time Capsule’s default storage?
If I use Time Machine to backup to Time Capsule’s default storage is it possible to partition the disk so that there’s a fixed amount of space allocated to the Time Machine backup. If not is it possible to specify in the settings how much space allocated to the Time Machine backup?
I take it I could set the Time Capsule at N speed & my iPhone will still connect at the G speed right?

    Some issues I can answer:
You cannot use your Netgear to extend the Range. Another Airport would be necessary and it still will be a critical theme. Instructions are easily to locate in the Help of of the AirPort Utility.
Yep, you can run the first BackUp via Ethernet.
I cannot surely answer your questions concerning TimeMachine as I dont use it, eventhough I like my TimeCapsule.
11n supports different modi. There is a 11n modus which will allow your iPhone to
connect, while other modi just allow only 11n devices.
    In general:
Dont expect to much from 11n. Its better than 11g but not that much. I just made tests and ended up, prefering a 100Mbit DLAN connection which was way faster and more reliable than 300Mbit via 11n-only 5Ghz.
