Threaded Anchored Text Boxes Causing Problems (Crashing)

I have a set of three anchored styled text boxes inside my primary text flow. Indesign seemed to allow this, but is now having trouble after I resized the Primary text frame and pinched these anchored boxes. The documnet is now in overset after the set of three and indesign is crashing whenever I touch them. It's holding my document hostage.
I've tried: Pasting the whole document into a larger formatt file, or Cutting out the set of three and they all shut down the program.
Has anyone else had this problem or am I missing something else?

Have you tried exporting to IDML and open it again?

    Since moving to Maverick and the new updated of Keynote, I have a constant problem when typing in a text box, the program crashes. Is there a bug fix for this. Drives me nuts. Like many who can type quite quickly but at secretarial level, the text box freezes, nothing works and you know what's coming...crash!
    This is most annoying. Is there bug fixes for this. Apparently I have the current updates and this problem still exists. Is it a Maverick bug or Keynote.

    How did you install Mavericks, as an update ontop of the previous OS or did you wipe the drive and install clean?

  • Anchored text boxes in XML

    I am wondering if anyone can help..
    I have created a structured indesign document (structured as in tagged for XML import). My problem is the first tagged object is an anchored text box which needs to sit on top of the second anchored tagged picture box. This layout is fine before importing the xml file. however after import the first anchored text box disappears and is replaced by normal text.. is there anyway to stop the box disappearing after import?
    any help would be greatly appreciated. I am using Indesign CS4 on a PC.

    Not that I know of off the top of my head. I'd suggest that, if you are allowed to do so, gin up an example INDD file, put it up on YouSendIt or a similar service, and invite the forum-ites to take a crack at it. Probably, one of us can come up with some clever method to avoid the need for anchored frames at all; I can't visualize why you would need to do so, and my fair-to-middlin' knowledge of XML export and import in ID makes me think that you can't flow text into and out of anchored text frames with XML. However, I will dig into it and see if I can't confirm or deny this hunch of mine.

  • How to copy/paste anchor text box to its anchor point in text and delete all empty anchors?

    hi all
    i have a document of few pages but one story. The right column is the main text box and on many places anchored text boxes are placed which appeared on the left column as shown below.
    i want text of each anchor-text-box to be cut from its place and paste at its insertion/anchor point and delete all empty anchored boxes.
    I am trying since morning but i unable to reach anchor object reference. Any help on how to start with will be helpful.
    virender

    Ok, let's say you have one main text box (not anchored) and three text boxes that are anchored to text within it. The first one is anchored with text, the second one is unanchored, and the third one is empty (I'm not going to get into inline anchoring vs. custom anchoring since you didn't bring it up in your post).
    We cycle through the items on the page:
    function main(){
      var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
      var myPages = myDoc.pages.everyItem().getElements();
      for (var i = 0; i < myPages.length; i++){
        var myPage = myPages[i];
        //Checks that the page is valid, and that it is not a master page. If either is true, skips to the next page.
        if (myPage.isValid == false) continue;
        if (myPage.parent instanceof MasterSpread) continue;
        var myItems = myPage.allPageItems;
        for (var j = 0; j < myItems.length; j++){
          //Current item.
          var myItem = myItems[j];
          //If myItem doesn't have a Character parent, it is not anchored.
          //The first and third text frames would fail this test.
          if (!(myItem.parent instanceof Character)) continue;
          //We only care about text frames.
          if (!(myItem instanceof TextFrame)) continue;
          //I think the only way this would happen would be if you had an image or
          //something else unexpected within the frame. I check for it so no content
          //is inadvertently lost.
          else if (myItem.texts.length > 1) continue;
          //If we're still in this iteration of the loop, all qualifications are met.
          //Flatten the text frame.
          //I don't use layers that often so, to me, flatten makes sense. You may want
          //to use a different term if there's a chance for confusion.
          flattenItem(myItem);
    function flattenItem(funcItem)
         //Hold onto the anchor character.
        var myParent = funcItem.parent;
         //Duplicate the text from within the frame so that it appears right after the anchor.
         //There may be other methods, but this works for me. I try to avoid copy/paste
         //so as not to deal with any clipboard mishaps. I added a check in case of empties.
         if (funcItem.texts.length > 0){funcItem.texts[0].duplicate(LocationOptions.AFTER, myParent.insertionPoints[0]);}
         //Replace the anchor character itself with a space (or whatever) which also
         //deletes the text frame it was anchoring.
        myParent.contents = " ";
    I guess the takeaway might be that you're not looking at the main text frame and then checking to see if anything is anchored to it. You're looking at each text frame and figuring out if it is anchored. That's my approach, anyway.

  • Anchored text box within a text frame

    I'm struggling to find the correct anchored option to allow an anchored text box to sit under a paragraph block with a 4pt space after. What I need is to edit the paragraph above. If the copy runs onto more lines I want the box to drop down as the extra line increase (to keep in the flow).
    Also, I may need to increase the amount of copy inside the anchored text box. When I pull the depth of the anchored box down, the whole anchored box shoots up. The space after the above paragraph has lost its spacing.
    Can anyone explain the best way to anchor a box which could change in depth but keep the same spacing between each block of text?
    Thanks

    You have two choices, use auto for the leading on the paragraph that contains the inline/above line frame (and you can set the autoleading percentage in the Justification settings so it calculates the same value as your fixed leading for that size type if you don't want to use a different paragraph style) and ID will adjust the leading to the largest "character" in a line -- the anchored frame, or you can use a custom anchored frame and set the offsets and text wrap.
    In this case, I think the inline/above line option is preferable as it will push the anchoed frame to the next column if necessary, and it's a lot easier to set up.

  • PLEASE HELP anchored text boxes corrupted CS5

    I have a book I've been working on for some time that is close to final. It has anchored text boxes in the sidebar that flow with the text and is being edited in an IC assignment environment. I made semi-final edits to it yesterday and exported a PDF, but when I started scrolling through the pages, I noticed that whole pages of the content were blank. The stories were still flowing as if there was text on the blank pages, but there were no text boxes to select and it was intermitten through the whole document. Thinking the layout file was corrupt, I exported to IDML and opened that. It recovered almost identical to the other file and now all the anchored text boxes are completely locked. I can no longer select them to edit the text or move them.  I tried unlinking the IC stories, still locked. I tried going back to a version of the ID file from before I made the edits--figuring the edits would be preserved in the stories and I could just reedit the layout, but while I've managed to recover the pages of content that had gone blank, my anchored text boxes are still completely locked. Does anyone have any suggestions. This book was nearly final and I have a hard deadline.
    Mac 10.5.8, ID 7.0.4
    I do have ID CS5.5 on another computer. Do you think it would be worth trying to convert the file to the newer version and then back to CS5?

    OK, I've completely severed all connection to IC. Anchored boxes are still locked. I exported the whole thing to IDML again and opened that. Anchored boxes are still locked. I copied the text out of the story into a new blank document and the anchored text boxes are still locked. They show little locks on the frames. Is there a way to lock anchored text boxes without locking the story?  If there is, maybe there's a way to unlock them?  I'm just wondering if some option I don't know about was accidentally applied.

  • InDesign CS3 - Is it possible to thread anchored text across pages?

    New to InDesign. Just learned about anchored objects. Have anchored text that is longer than the text it refers to. Text exists in the first column and would like for text to thread to the first column on the next page.

    I don't think so. As you have it now, the callout stays with the line the object is anchored to, and it doesn't break and continue at the end of a page -- which is a problem when your callout line is near or at the bottom of the page.
    I don't suppose you could create separate anchored frames for each of the text lines in the callout ... It would work for a while, but you would run into problems when editing -- you cannot easily edit a single callout as the frames are not threaded, and if two of these objects end up on the same line in the original text thread, they would appear on top of eachother.
    Any of the other guys & gals out there with a good idea?

  • Keyword tags text box poorly designed, crashes PSE 8

    I was very interested to see that PSE 8 allows you to enter keyword tags using a text box, as other programs do, promising much faster tagging with large sets of tags.  But the feature has serious bugs rendering it unusable.
    After trying the keyword-tags text box for less than a minute on my large catalog with 426 tags, PSE 8 crashed.    Even with a fresh catalog and the default tag categories, it will crash after using the text box about 40 times.   (See below for a recipe.)
    Another bug concerns tags with commas in them, e.g. "Truckee, CA" (I have a couple hundred such Place tags).  If you type "Tru" in the text box, select the tag with the mouse, and hit enter, PSE 8 will create two new tags, Truckee and CA, in the Other category, and apply them to the photo.
    A design misfeature: After you select and apply a tag with the text box, it loses the keyboard focus.  So to select another tag for the same photo, you have to move your hand to the mouse and click in the text box again.  Partially defeats the whole purpose.
    Recipe for reproducing the bug:
    1. Create a new catalog.
    2. Import 50 photos.
    3. Select the next photo.
    4. In the keyword tag text box, type "p" and then enter.
    5. Go to step 3.
    On the 40th or 41st photo, my PSE 8 reliably crashes (Vista 32, 4 GB of memory).   If after step 1 you use the Keyword Tags > + > From File command to load a tag heirarchy of 210 tags (see the attached file), it will crash after just 9 photos.   And with 426 tags, it crashes after 5 photos.
    Interestingly, on my Vista 64 system (unsupported by Adobe, 8 core x 2.7 GHz), PSE 8 doesn't crash, but the text box gets unusably slow very quickly.  WIth 210 keyword tags in the catalog, it soon takes about 12 seconds to find a tag after you type a unique prefix.   That time gradually gets longer the more you use the text box.  With 426 tags, it takes almost 20 seconds to apply a tag using the text box.
    On both systems, it's clear what the nature of the bug is: Each time you use the text box, the process's memory grows by many megabytes.  I believe my Vista 64 system doesn't crash (at least not immediately) because it provides 3.5 GB of memory for use by PSE 8, while Vista 32 only provides about 1.5 GB.
    I'm getting a sinking feelilng...

    Is the white triangle to the left of "Keyword Tags" pointing down or pointing to the right?  See this screen shot:
    Click on the white triangle -- does that make a difference?

  • Text box alignment problem

    Every time I create a new text box in an exsiting file, the text in a text box moves. the text alighment button is pressed EG: align to top of text box, Middle or bottom. but everytime I move the text box, the text will then move with in it. I turned off all text wraps and ticked suppress any text wrap in hidden layers (even when this is not ticked) nothing changes, The text still moves around inside the box. I am quite sure that this is not suppose to happen, especially if I ticked for  it to be align in the centre of the text box.
    Can someone help me please.

    Thank you so much. It's been bugging me for ages.

  • How to fit frame to content when content contains anchored text box?

    Hi there
    I am creating a series of inline text frames within a text frame. Each of these inline frames contains text which includes an anchored text frame. If I tell my inline frames to fit to content they seem to ignore the anchored frames contained therein. Is there any way I can get them to consider the anchored frames they contain when they fit to content?
    I tried checking the geometric bounds of my anchored frame before and after its parent frame has fitted to content. Even when there has been no change in position the bounds after fitting to content seem to give numbers way off. I thought I might be able to reset the geometric bounds of the containing frame manually if the anchored frame therein had moved with the fit frame to content.
    Here is a snippet of my code:
    var anchoredBounds = anchoredFrame.geometricBounds;
    mainFrame.fit(FitOptions.FRAME_TO_CONTENT);
    mainFrame.texts.item(0).recompose;
    var newAnchoredBounds = anchoredFrame.geometricBounds;
    alert(anchoredBounds[0] + "; " + newAnchoredBounds[0]);
    So “mainFrame” is the text frame containing text and the anchored frame, “anchoredFrame”. “anchoredBounds[0]” seems to correlate with the top edge of the frame when I check it manually after the script has finished (when it hasn’t move with the fit to content). “newAnchorBounds[0]”, however, always gives numbers that are way off every time. Any ideas why this would be the case?
    And most importantly, can anyone suggest how I can get my “mainFrame” to consider the “anchoredFrame” contained in it when it fits to content?
    I’m using CS4 on a PC. Let me know if it would help to post more code, or if I haven’t explained myself clearly enough.

    Is there any way I can get them to consider the anchored frames they contain when they fit to content?
    @Graham – as long as ALL the anchored text frames are "inline" text frames,
    mainFrame.fit(FitOptions.FRAME_TO_CONTENT);
    should work as expected or at least sort of *.
    Without calculating anything at all.
    Just tested in InDesign CS5.5 (v7.5.3).
    Could it be that CS4 will fail on that?
    Of course, you can only rely on this, if the main text frame contains any "real" text at all. Not only the  special characters representations of the "inline" text frames. In that case the fit() method will do nothing at all.
    * it's debatable, if the fit() method yields desirable output.
    It depends on your expectations.
    See the following examples:
    1. Case 1:
    Text frame before fitting:
    2. Case 1:
    After fitting with the UI command, context menu: "fit frame to contents"
    (note the gap between the last baseline of the text and the text frame; note also  the new width)
    Is that the result you would expect? I guess not.
    3. Case 1:
    After fitting  programmatically with myTextframe.fit(FitOptions.FRAME_TO_CONTENT);
    4. Case 2:
    Before fitting
    same text frame as in #1, but different height
    5. Case 2:
    After fitting with the UI command, context menu: "fit frame to contents"
    A different width than in #2 and a gap at the bottom of the text frame!
    Not the desired result, I'd say…
    6. Case 2:
    After fitting  programmatically with myTextframe.fit(FitOptions.FRAME_TO_CONTENT);
    Same result as in #3
    So with scripting we could, at least, get consistent results.
    Of course, you could get the same results in the UI, if you double-click on the bottom center control point…
    Maybe it helps, if you are showing us some screen grabs:
    1. Your starting point
    2. The desired result

  • 'Save Scanned File As' dialog box causing problems

    A lot of our users just upgraded to Adobe Std 8 from Adobe Std 7. With Adobe Std 8, the 'Save Scanned File As' dialog box comes up even before the document gets scanned (this was not the case with Adobe Std 7). How do you get rid of the dialog box? This is causing us a lot of problems because our Adobe is integrated with a document management program called DM5. With Adobe Standard 8 our users cannot save directly to DM5.Because the
    #Save Scanned File As# dialog box comes up first, now they have to tell Adobe to save it first somewhere other than DM, after the document
    gets scanned they save the document again to DM then they go back and delete the document that they saved in the other location. Is there a registry setting or anything that I can set to get rid of the 'Save Scanned File As' box. If you hit CANCEL, the document does not get scanned so users really do not have a choice but to save the document twice. As I said earlier, this was not the case with Adobe Std 7.

    Is there a registry setting or anything that I can set to get rid of the 'Save Scanned File As' box.
    No.

  • I lost text I entered in a text box when Firefox crashed and did not have Lazarus installed. I had clicked 'preview' before it crashed. Any way to get it back?

    I figured it must be somewhere in my history. I've tried checking the caches but no luck. It must be somewhere, because I did click preview multiple times before it crashed and the text was there loaded on the webpage. Is there any way I can get that text back? It was a few hours' work.

    I have a 1.5TB external hard drive and it shows iPhoto, iDVD, iTunes, etc., but it doesn't allow me to open any of them. How can I see what's in these icons if it won't open because it's in a Time Machine backup?
    How old is this Time Machine backup? Is it current?
    To be able to use applications and your iPhoto library and iTunes library you need to restore them from the Time Machine backup.  To get your photos back, you need to restore the iPhoto Library from your Pictures folder, and to reinstall the iPhoto application.
    This would have best been done, when you reinstalled the system using Setup assistant. http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html
    Did the Tech Guy not use your Time Machine backup to restore your Mac?
    Since you already set up your Mac, you can use the Migration Assistant from Applications > Utilities to restore your old files to a new user account.
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
    To reinstall iPhoto: Did iPhoto originally come preinstalled on your Mac, and what was the MacOS X version that came with your Mac?  Or did you buy the iLife installer package?

  • Using InDesign CS6, why does a drop shadow applied to a text box, cause a photo on the same page to

    I thought it was just a screen appearance so I made a pdf and the photo is lighter here too.  I've never had this issue with CS5.5 or earlier.  Drop shadows were able to be applied to one object without affecting others on the page. Is it a bug? Is there a setting I'm missing?  Thanks!

    Overprint preview didn't stop the lightening of the photo.
    A google search turned up the suggestion to change the transparency blend space to RGB, which worked in InDesign.  When I make the pdf (no color conversion) it looks ok. But when turning on Output Preview in Acrobat, the photo lightens again.  Weird and frustrating - I'm not sure what the final output will look like.
    Is Transparency Flattener set at High res an option?
    I appreciate your help!
