Three Black Bars! [Solved]

When using KDE3 on ArchLinux I get three little black bars on the screen.I am running KDE with nVidia drivers I am using the ones from ArchLinux not from nVidia's site. This bug occurs when using compiz-fusion also. It doesn't seem to affect performance but it is an annoying artifact on the screen.

I fixed it! It seems that splashy caused there I just disabled it as 15 secs of eye candy isn't worth 3 + hours of annoyances

This is another screenshot, from what I know normally macbooks don t have black borders around, the screen just fully fill the monitor space...

On fullscreen flash videos (like on YouTube) there is a black bar on the right side of the screen, and I must click slightly to the right of onscreen buttons instead of directly on them while this is happening. It's like I should click where they should be, not where they are. The exact same problem happens on Google Chrome, but not on Internet Explorer. It also happens on some games I installed like, "Crysis".

Nevermind, I solved the problem by downloading this:

  • I have a Pages file that I created on my iPad that I used iCloud to store. There are no backups anywhere of this file. The file is stuck on updating on iCloud and on the iPad the file is inaccessible. There is a black bar over it which greys the file out.

I have a Pages file that I used my iPad to create. iCloud backed this file up to its server. The problem is that my iPad somehow locked itself. I had to restore it, the file was lost on the iPad, and when I went back to iCloud to retrieve the file it said it was Updating. The file is showing on my iPad, but it is greyed out with a black bar across the bottom of it. I have been working on this file for months, and I am not about to lose it! Please can someone tell me how I can get my file to download at least to my iMac.
This file has worked perfectly in the past, and what I didn't realise when the iPad was locked down was that the Airplane Mode was on, to save battery. If that had been on it would have synced it again.
Can anyone help me? I'm supposed to be sending this file (completed) off to a company in three days.
    Thanks

On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac.

Read the two previous reports and the possible remedy from December 2014,but still not solved. Has there been any new solution to this problem on a nearly new MFP.

    Hi @PaceS,
I read your post and see that you are getting black bars when printing in black. Please clarify if this isn't correct. I would like to help you.
I would do a hard reset to see if will help.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
I have provided a document with the steps for calibrating and cleaning the toners, printing a Print Quality page, inspecting the toner for damage, checking the paper and driver settings to see if this will resolve the issue. Some of the steps you have already tried, but please try the other steps listed. Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues.
Print a Diagnostics Page: Go to Setup, Reports Menu, Diagnostics Page.
Update the printer's firmware. Software and Drivers. Select Go under Option 2.
Have you tried a new toner?
Are you using Genuine HP Toner?
    What are the toner levels?
What were the results of the Print Quality Page and Diagnostics Page.
This will help determine if it is just one specific toner, possibly a fuser or hardware issue with the printer. Feel free to include a screen shot of both pages.
If you appreciate my efforts, please click the Thumbs up button below.
Please let me know the results. Thank You.

  • How to get 72 DPI on PowerBook G4 (1440x960) without black bars?

I love the high resolution screen on my PowerBook G4 (1440x960) -- but sometimes this ultra-high resolution screen is difficult to read. For example, screen fonts are designed to display at the proper size on 72 DPI screens, but on this screen they look tiny because the pixel density is well over 100 DPI. In many cases, this problem can be solved by simply increasing the point-size of fonts. I have also written Apple to request that they reprogram OS X to eliminate the 72 DPI limitation on WYSIWYG (too complicated to explain).
In the meantime however, I wonder what resolution I could set my screen to in order that it would display at 72 DPI (or close to it, like 80). So far, the only other widescreen resolutions offered in the Displays control panel force you to have black bars because they do not match the screen's dimensions:
    1280 x 800 (should be 854)
    1152 x 720 (should be 768)
    1024 x 640 (should be 682)
720 x 480 (this is proper but way too low for anything but MiniDV video which has its native rez at 720x480)
This PowerBook's usable display area, by my measurements, is 12.5625" wide. Assuming this is correct, 720x480 yields ~57 DPI. 1024x640 yields ~82 DPI. To achieve 72 DPI, one would have to use 904x602 or so: lets just say 900x600.
So my question is: how can I set my display resolution to 900x600 or thereabouts? Barring that, is there a way to set it to 1024x682? Given the flexibility of QuartzExtreme, I fail to accept that this is not feasible technologically, nor do I care to continue straining my eyes trying to read 10-point fonts that are actually 6-point fonts due to the ~115 DPI pixel density of this awesome screen.
At 1440x960 on this screen, unless you are working in a program that does not rely on OS X's text-rendering engine, fonts appear at 62% of their listed point-size. Here is a list of the point-sizes that things actually appear at:
    9-point = ~5.7-point!!! (>.< [<- = squinty eyes])
    10-point = ~6.3-point (q.q [<- = crying eyes])
    12-point = ~7.5-point (sigh)
For fonts to display at their proper WYSIWYG sizes on this screen in a browser, menu, TextEdit, or other program using Apple's text-rendering engine, they must be set to ~1.6x their proper point-size. Approximately:
    to get: | set to:
    12-point | 19-point
    10-point | 16-point
    9-point | 14-point
Of course, this should not be this way; the Mac is supposed to be WYSIWYG. Back in the old days, WYSIWYG was one of the main things that distinguished Mac from PC.
Now, lack of WYSIWYG is one of the main things that distinguishes Mac OS X and recent Macs from Systems 1-9 and vintage Macs. And it's killing my eyes! The text in some of my programs isn't much bigger than the text on the back of my credit-card bills. Help me... and write Apple letters to fix this.
    -=DG=-

Once you change the displayed resolution, of course, you lose any use of the higher DPI of the screen.
OS X 10.4 has an experimental developer tool for matching output to the screen DPI, but it causes many applications to malfunction (including most of the core OS). 10.5 (Leopard) will properly deliver this ability.
(and yes, it is sad that it's taken this long to address this quite fundamental issue. At least Acrobat Reader has an option to take account of the display DPI when rendering fonts.)
Here's some links about this resolution independence:

  • When I render my video I get a black bar on the left side of the screen

I just upgraded to FCS 2 and so far it's been a complete waste of money. I'm having nothing but problems with FCP, Compressor, and QMaster. I will just post my FCP problem here.
I've edited a weekly video podcast and everything looks great, until I render it and export it. When I render it, I get a constant, solid black bar on the far left of the video that takes up about 5% of the screen. My layers are definitely sized correctly to fill up the entire canvas, and they are all centered. I cannot figure out why I am getting this black bar or how to get rid of it without ditching the upgrade and going back to FCP5.1.
I have already tried completely uninstalling the FCS suite and reinstalling. No luck. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
My original source material is in Apple Intermediate Codec, with 32-bit float audio and a variable frame rate. This has not been friendly to FCP, so I use Quicktime to convert it to Apple ProRes with 24-bit audio and 29.97 frame rate. This is what I import into FCP.
My sequence settings are set to the same specs as my source material. 854x480, square pixels, no field dominance, Apple ProRes compression.
The black bar on the left side of the screen shows up before I even export. It shows up when I render everything.
I am exporting with Quicktime Conversion to:
    MP4
    h.264 codec
    720x405
    1000 video bit rate
    Main Profile
    No cropping/filters or anything.
The ONLY thing I did different before upgrading to FCP6 was that I used Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through. I was told by an FCP instructor that writes and publishes all kinds of FCP training material that I should upgrade to FCP6 and use the Apple ProRes422 Codec instead, so that's what I'm trying to do.
I am going back to restart my project using Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through like I used to, but it will be awhile before I can tell if that solved the problem. Either way, I would like to be using the ProRes codec....
    Thoughts?

  • Transcode produces black bars on side in Encore but not AME

I am Transcoding 1920x1080 footage to NTSC widescreen DVD's. If I transcode the footage in Apple Compressor, or Adobe Media Encoder(with 12px top/bottom crop) it comes out correct. If I transcode in Encore, I cannot get rid of the thin black bars on the side. I am setting the crop in the Encore settings but this just creates a border all around and does not solve the problem. When I preview the output, it looks correct in the "Edit Quality Presets" window but has the borders in the timeline. I make a lot of quick one-off DVD's and I'm trying to find ways to just use one piece of software and not create a lot of extra steps. I understand why the crop is needed, I just need to know how to get Encore to give the same result as AME does.
    Thanks.

Hey Ann.  I couldn't make it work with just setting it to 16:9.  It's the same thing as when rendering out a scaled HD square pixel file in a 720x480 (1.21) comp in After Effects.  The top and bottom needs a bit of cropping to work in a SD 16:9 world.

  • 720p over HDMI - black bar issues

    Hi all.
I've got a 1st gen V-box, which worked great until about 9 months ago.  I had been happily using 720p over HDMI for about a year.  However, I suspect a software "update" around this time caused problems, as the 720p and 1080i settings are now incredibly unreliable.
Specifically, when I set the box to show HD resolutions, there are usually black bars down the left and right of the screen, cutting off those sides of the picture.  Sometimes the picture displays properly, but this is usually only temporary - after a day or two of thinking everything's sorted, the dreaded black bars reappear when starting the box up for the first time that day.  Rebooting doesn't seem to help.  The bars even overlay the menus, so it seems to be affecting everything not just live tv.  The full picture is shown when I use standard def over HDMI however.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so any ideas how to fix?

    Hello
On most platforms, I've experienced black bars at the sides, noteably lower bandwidth channels such as kids or shopping often display what you describe when using any HDMI setting in my experience.
Thre is the ability to hit the shortcuts button on the bottom right of the remote which allows you to scroll through to then stretch the image if you wish- but It doesn't always work, I'll stress again this also happens on my FREESAT box, so I don't think it's an issue generic to Vision.
    Couple of questions though,
1: Is it a Toshiba tv? (some firmware upgrades to these sets have caused numerous issues and lip synching problems.
2: have you tried a different HDMI cable? (apologies if that's blatantly obvious!)
I've not tested V.1.5 black box yet to see how this issue is there (note I don't call it a V2 box- as it's **bleep**).
Hopefully, if the rumours are true the development team will scrutinise the forums, realise these issues do indeed exist and can work towards a solution in the Freeview HD offering of whatever comes out next:

  • Black bar at bottom of page

We're trying to embed flash paper in a projector file. Docs
print cleanly as flash paper .swf flies from a browser, but when
embedded into a projector file, a black bar (about 3/8 ' tall by
the width of the paper) appears very close to the bottom edge of
the paper. The dimensions of the printed output are not altered.
Baffled by the cause of this.
    Jonas

Well, the problem is a bug in Flash projector. We checked the
printer output file printing from Flash projector vs. printing from
Flash paper2 directly, and the files are different. We had set a
black background for the content in Flash projector. Changing this
to white solved the black bar printing problem, but this is a bug
    in Flash projector.

  • Stumping You with Pulsing Dissolves and Black Bars

    To start at the beginning...
I have been having problems with imported footage recently. I usually import footage from three sources. A Sony VX2100, A little Canon ZR 200 and Quicktime output from Photo to Movie (I use this software to animate still photos - very good).
In the pasts few weeks all of the footage I import has thin black bars on either side of the frame. (If we assume that the actual size is 720x480 the "image" might be 700x420...resulting in these these black bars being consistantly there regardless of where I am importing from...and on the footage I import from the Canon there is a thin black bar accross the bottom of the frame as well!
I posted this problem a few weeks back here and on some other forums and the consensus opinion was to reset my easy setup. I trashed preferences and followed this specific advice..."The easiest way to sort this out is to start FCP but close all open projects so that only the menu bar is showing. Now choose Easy Setup from the FCP menu. Check the Show All box if needed and choose your desired setting - this insures that clip, capture and sequence settings are all the same. Now start a new project and capture a test clip. Drop it into a sequence." I selected the basic DV NTSC 720x480. WHich is waht all of teh source material was shot/created at.
I did all of this and no joy... the black bars are still there after I import it into FCP (there are no black bars in the original source material. It is at true dimensions, so the problem lies in FCP).
While I have been trying to figure this out I did a simple workaround by blowing the footage up 103% which fills the 720x480 frame. For TV I would not care because the evil bars would be out of TV, but for internet stuff I (obviously) want full frame. The problem when I do this is that when I insert a dissolve between two segments that have been resized (at 103%) the image pulses after the transition. It appears that the stock dissolves only work with footage that is at 100% size...the image pulses back to the 103% size the instant the dissove is complete. Baffling.
So here is where I am. I can't figure what the deal is with FCP importing footage that is full frame out of the camera or software and getting these black bars...and If try to do a workaround and blow the footage up I get this pulsing after the transitions. The footage is fine if I do manual cross dissolves using the opacity levels but who has the time do do that?
Any suggestion kids?...this is really annoying.
    MS

Thanks but that was one of the first (and most obvious) things I tried. That is the thing that is baffling is look liike a window size image but it is not. The black bars are in the image and they occur somewhere in the importing process.
The only thing I can think of is it is a settings issue as I did not have this problem a couple of months ago.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Black bar in 32-bit comps!?

    Hi,
Most of my work I do as 8-bit comps in Ae. However, I recently wanted to play with some overbrights in Trapcode 3D Stroke, which can only be realised in a 32-bit composition.
Whenever I watch the comp, scrub through it it looks OK, but as soon as I play it as a RAM preview, a black bar appears at the top 3rd of the screen (and no, there's no mask or solid covering that area). I thought I had to update my nVidia drivers (I have a Quadro FX 4800-card), but alas, to no avail.
This also works its way through the rendered out versions.
The problem persists (or perhaps worsens) whenever I switch the comp back to 16-bit color space:
Now the top half of the screen is repeated and divided up into a repetitive cycle.
Only when I switch the comp back to 8-bit, the problem is solved.
In this comp, I did use a sequence of JPEG (8-bit files). But the problem seems to exist in any new comp or project set to 16 or 32-bit.
    I have a 64-bit windows 7 professional quad-core workstation with 18GB of RAM.
    Any ideas?

I thought I had to update my nVidia drivers (I have a Quadro FX 4800-card), but alas, to no avail.
But you're still using OpenGL?! Why not simply turn it off? AE can happily go without it. You're right on the money as far as I can tell - from what it looks like, it's a graphics card issues. Either a color space conversion issue on teh graphics card or some weird stuff with shader programs not being executed fully. Hard to tell, but as a start realyl do try to turn off OpenGL and then look into your driver config. Many times the latest driver is not the best one, so try an older driver version...

  • Trial to Full Version: Still have black bar across project...why?

I just downloaded the full version of Premiere Elements 9 for my Mac.  The project I had created with the trial version I was led to believe would cease to have the black bar across the video once I downloaded and installed the full version.  The black bar still exists.  Is there something else I need to do to get it to go away?
    Thanks,

    Hi
Seleting "Timeline > Delete Rendered Files" hasn't worked for me - the black line is still there.   Now I've done it, the "delete rendered files" option has greyed out so obviously Elements think it's done what it can.
Im using Premiere Elements 9 on Windows 7.   Could there be anything else I need to do?
    Other info:
I'm using A Dell Pavilion hP Laptop with i7 Q720 1.60 GHz and 4GB RAM
My project uses MPG4 fles covnerted to AVI format but still with MPG4 codecs in (haven't figured how to sort that one out yet despite great help here...)
My Project is set up as DV - NTSC.
Workflow - haven't used any transitions or anything. One single mp3 on one track (although slip up 8 or 9 times to stop slippage), with hundreds of 2-3 second video clips (as above) on 3 video tracks.
Anything else I can tell you?
Really hope you can help as I've just spent about 8 hours on this project!
[EDIT - could it have anything to do with the fact that I have been rendering clips as I went along (I had to as I was having trouble with file formats). If so, there is there any way of "re-doing" a project, or do I have to start again from sratch?   I guess the auto-saves won't help me as I've been rendering every 30 secs or so.]
[EDIT 2 - problem solved (after a very worried hour!).   I removed all files from the organiser and then brought them all back in, and that did the trick]
    Cheers

    Hi,
Connect the system to an external monitor and check if it displays correctly. If it does, probably your LCD panel/invertor/cable had gone faulty. If it comes out the same way on the external monitor, you're looking at motherboard repair/replacement.

  • Removing black bars down sides of clip?

    Hello
I am editing a movie clip in Premier Elements 11. It's a 25fps file. I did not film the clip, but was told that it was a normal (not widescreen) PAL clip. The clip looks like this when I am editing it (screenshot).
What concerns me are those two thick black bars down both sides of the clip. What causes them, please? Is it that the clip was really widescreen and I am editing it in normal mode and how best to remove them as I imagine they will be visible when the final product is show on a DVD or TV.
    Many thanks.
