Three devices on network: 100% packet loss for my iMac.

I'm having intermittent bouts of 100% packet-loss pinging my router from my iMac, at the same time my iPod touch and neighbor's Windows laptop are surfing wirelessly from the same router.
Sometimes these bouts resolve spontaneously. Otherwise I need to shut down, wait, and restart my iMac to reconnect. The longer the shut down, the longer I can connect it seems.
The problem started a few days ago, after months of trouble-free performance with the same settings. The computer usually stayed up all the time. I hoped in vain today's OSX 10.5.4 and AirPort firmware updates would fix the problem ...
Post 10pm is the most common problem time, 'tho I'm not sure if that's a function of my iMac's uptime (wireless module is cooking?) or some electronic interference firing up near by. Maybe a virus?
Known potential sources of interference have been around for months/years: my old wireless 'phone is a 900MHz model, the next door neighbor's satellite antenna's been up for months. The dodgy power in this old building is hopefully offset by the APC UPS that powers my Mac.
Do I keep fiddling with the AirPort channels, or do I take my computer back to the shop for (another) warranty repair?
Greg./

No, I'm not letting my neighbor steal my signal. He's subletting off me, and his access to my network (WPA2 encryption) is part of the "deal". He's a bit of a night-owl, and the late night download limit is pretty big, so it works fine all round.
I used his laptop's (and my iPod Touch's) uninterrupted access (while my iMac's floundering in packet-loss purgatory) as a way of "narrowing down" to the prime suspect: the iMac wireless module.
Greg./
ps sorry about the unnecessary alliteration; I had to substitute "purgatory" because the forum software censors "****" (aich, ee, ell, ell).

  • 100% packet loss

    Hi there,
I get 100% packet loss whilst I am playing online on the Xbox, it only occurs on FIFA 13, I have contacted EA and they have said the packet loss occurs within the BT network, I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem and whether you could help me? Can you confirm what test you ran that gave you these statistics?
100% packet loss would mean that there is nothing coming through the pipe for that period of time.  You are essentially disconnected at 100% loss, speed is the least of your concerns.  That is also going to depend on what you are testing your packet loss test against.  Perhaps VZW is blocking this particular test from completing.
A more standard test is to get a browser, connect to the Jetpack and navigate to SpeedTest.net.  Run a few tests here and take the average speeds that are recorded to paint a better picture.
Xbox also has well known limitations with the VZW 4G LTE network.  Unless something new has happened all Xbox users on 4G LTE are not able to host multiplayer games due to the NAT firewall that runs that network.

  • No connection! 100% packet loss.

I have an IP assigned to my router, and the link light is active on the OR modem. No websites are loading. Ping requests show 100% packet loss. Tracerts time out after the first hop.
I've tried 4 modem and router reboots. I then tried 5 different DNS servers, including bt, opendns and comodo.
I'm running out of ideas... Anybody have any suggestions?

Last few weeks I have been getting only 47kb/s when I download updates that connect to patch.swtor.com. I have asked on there forums and have done a pathping trace and have been told by them that there is a 100% packet loss in hop 3 & 5

this only happens for SWTOR and I also play GW2 but have no issues at all and get 300kb/s which is actually above normal.
Hope this can be sorted please
    Thanks

You're not seeing 100% packet loss at those hops. If that really were the case, then you'd get no response from all subsequent nodes.
The Pathping output is telling you that those nodes aren't responding to 100% of packets addressed to them, but that they are correctly forwarding 100% of packets not addressed to them eg the destination.
If they were dropping a small percentage of packets it could point to a congested router etc, but the fact that it's 100% tends to suggest that it's more likely that those nodes are simply configured to not respond to ICMP echo requests.
Of more concern, I would suggest, is the real packet loss within llnw.net

  • How do I fix 100% packet loss?

I have an 8mb connect but i roughly get like 4-5mb. I think i have the homehub version 1 or 1.5.
When i search for servers on Counter Strike Source and team fortress the whole interenet just resets and no servers found. I posted on the steam forums and they said it wass to do with packet loss.
I tried to test for packet loss on http://freeola.com/line-test/ and it says i have 100% packet loss then i tried on http://pingtest.net/ and it was unable to test for packet loss.
How do i fix 100% packet loss?

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
I tried both, and the freeola one failed with 100% packet loss, but the pingtest site returned 0% packet loss.
I expect the former is being blocked by firewall/router as expected.
Seems like they aren't quite doing the same thing.

From this I feel there are things to troubleshoot. :-) but how come that Lync reports a 900% packet loss?
I thought that a 100% packet loss was everything... can someone tell me what exactly are these 100+ percentages?
    Thanks in advance.

latest patch level :) are you not seeing these values in your Server Performance reports?
The other thing that bugs me is when you have 1 call for 1 second with "900% loss", that would average down to get red values in the summary columns for the other 100 calls as well, as the calls are not counted for seconds, but just piece by piece.
So 8 perfect calls to this one above would average "100% packet loss per call" in the summary, which is just unusable...

  • Percantage of packet loss on link

I am working with Cisco routers and i need somehow to find out packet loss percentage for each link (actual). I was trying to use ICMP Jitter IP SLA operation, which unfortunately returns only the number of dropped packets. So i need to get via SNMP the number of transferred packets on line to calculate the percentage. Which OID should i use to obtain this information?

Be careful, by definition a 10 Mbit half-duplex connection is equivalent to a single T1 of bandwidth, nothing even close to 6 Mbit of bandwidth. If you are running QoS (assuming CBWFQ and LLQ), based on a shaped parent policy equal to 6 Mbit you will definitely oversubscribe the 10 Mbit half-duplex connections by a significant margin.
The reason for this is that a T1 is 1.536 Mbit full-duplex (over 3 Mbit of bandwidth). A 10 Mbit half-duplex connection maxes out of usable bandwidth at about 30% utilization, with almost 100% packet loss (due to excessive collisions) at 40% utilization. As you can see, 40% utilization on a half-duplex 10 Mbit connection is equal to about 4 Mbit of bandwidth and a single T1 is over 3 Mbit of bandwidth. Again, not anywhere close to 6 Mbit of bandwidth.
Assuming you are shaping at 6 Mbit with a child CBWFQ and LLQ policy (you are shaping, right?), you will not be able to guarantee that rate of bandwidth which will crush your audio/video call.
Let me know if you have any questions/comments...

  • 90% Packet Loss while online gaming. Almost sure i...

I have been experiencing heavy packet loss for about 3 months now, hoping it would disappear at some point.
Now that I realise it won't go away, I have contacted BT and all they've done is "turn off my ping latency" which is complete bull, and refer me to the BT experts, which I'm also sure are useless.
I've been trying ping, pathping and tracert commands to the servers I connect to. Ping shows 0% packet loss, tracert has request timeouts, and pathping doesn't even go past the 1st hop.
I don't even know what to do now, this wasn't an issue before, it just popped up suddenly and I can't fix it.
After using the ping -t command to my gateway address, I am 100% sure it is a BT routing issue that needs to be fixed.

    Hi neve1176,
Thanks for posting. Can you post up the results of your tracert and one from the BBC site for comparison and we'll take a look.
    Cheers

  • Packet loss

    Hi,
Going to keep it short and sweet, many of you know about the FIFA/BT/EA problem and the terrible connection online. Here is my latest traceroute to EA, don't know much about this kind of stuff, so are these results normal or is there something distinctly wrong?
    Thanks.

Ignore the 100% packet loss - it's a red herring. Those hops will be configured to not respond to traceroute type traffic.  If you really did have 100% packet loss, then you'd also get no response from subsequent hops which isn't the case.
Your "issues" appear to be twofold:
A significant increase in latency on the transatlantic hop within level3's network.
Packet loss at EA - possibly (but not necessarily) due to congestion on their network.
    HTH.

  • Troubleshooting packet loss

From which ouput of the command can I know the packet loss of VoIP is occuring?

The coutners in show interface have included the packets loss of all the data including voice, so I want to find out how I can find the packet loss for voice only. It seems the show active voice command should have these parameters, but I don't know exactly which output of this command is indicating the packet loss of voice.

  • Packet loss unacceptable?

I have a test setup of a cisco 2106 wlc and a 1231ag access point in lightweight mode.  ive been having issues with dropped connectivity trying a lot of different wpa2 setups.  i've finally peared it down to a pretty plain config of a wpa2 psk non-broadcast ssid with most of the options turned off under advanced in the wlan config.  i have a linux laptop and a windows laptop testing, both located about 10ft from the ap with perfect signal strength.
i can connect fine, and i do a steady ping from the laptops to another (wired ip) for testing.  i'll let it go, and then look at the ping statistics.  i always have a couple of pings lost.  it's usually 0% because its like 3 pings out of 800.  but is this acceptable? i thought wifi was supposed to be collision avoidance.  is there an easy way to debug this besides putting wireshark inbetween the AP and the WLC, then the WLC and the core switch, etc...

I consider 3 pings lost out of 800 to be entirely normal/acceptable behavior in 802.11.  If you look at our design guidelines for VoWLAN (voice being pretty much the "canary in the coal mine"), you will see that we specify no more than 1% packet loss for a voice call, so 0.4% would be considered well under that threshold.
An unlicensed wireless channel is nothing like a Cat5E point to point cable.  It's a half duplex channel with very high BER - many many orders of magnitude worse than 1000BASE-T, typically with all kinds of 802.11 and non-802.11 interferers encroaching.  To be sure, the 802.11 CSMA/CD works hard to avoid collisions and to keep retransmitting to get its packets through at layer 2 - but when radar or a microwave oven starts stepping all over the physical layer, no upper layer magic is going to get the bits through.
If you don't like 0.4% packet loss and want to troubleshoot it ... then you would typically need something like wireless packet capture on your channel, plus spectrum analysis (like Spectrum Expert) to catch any non-802.11 interference.  Maybe you will find that there are 5GHz channels available that are cleaner than the 2.4GHz that you're trying to use now.  (Assuming that you are using 2.4GHz, you don't say.)

  • Flood ping of loopback device gives 20% packet loss!

While trying to diagnose a problem with my Airport Express (high packet loss even with a strong signal), I noticed that my Macbook cannot reliably flood ping its own loopback device!
    bash-3.2$ $ sudo ping -f 127.0.0.1
    PING 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
    ....^C
    --- 127.0.0.1 ping statistics ---
994 packets transmitted, 750 packets received, 24% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.012/0.017/0.103/0.007 ms
As the loopback interface is internal, I get precisely the same result whether Airport is turned on or off.
This seems completely crazy to me! Anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Can't help you specifically with that, but just last night my Atheros AR5008 adapter starting dropping 40%-80% of the packets to my router. It's unusably slow now. I had this problem with the 2.6.38 kernel and was able to solve it by passing the nohwcrypt option to the ath9k module, but that doesn't work anymore.
I'm now on the 3.0.4 kernel, Arch x64.  Last updates that MAY be relevant were dbus-sharp, dbus-sharp-glib, and gnutls. I started having problems the day after upgrading these packages.  I'm connecting in 802.11n mode.
I've been looking for evidence of related bugs but so far nothing. I wonder if this is a broader issue affecting more than just the Atheros or Ralink drivers?
EDIT: downgrading gnutls from 3.0.3-1 to 3.0.2-1 reduced my packet loss to about 15%, so the internet is now basically usable. I also tried downgrading glib-networking (which I updated to version 2.28.7-5 a few days back), but that didn't seem to help.

  • Packet Loss frequently for a week?

Hello all, I am currently experiencing a massive amount of packet loss throughout various devices in my household. The main issues are with my SmartTV and the HuluPlus/HBO GO applications. After running my own tests, I have noticed that I am experiencing a whoping 38% packet loss to Hulu and HBO, and a regular 15% loss with any website on my PC and while gaming. Several hours with Verizon has not helped solve the issue and it is becoming increasingly frustrating. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

I would start by checking your local connection.
    Run to speedtest.verizon.net
That will test your connection to the Verizon network.
Try and do it when you notice the issues.
If that doesn't give you the speed you are paying for, Verizon should be able to use that to help troubleshoot.
If it passes, that means it could be in Verizon network or farhter down the line.

  • Serious packet loss creating roaming network over Ethernet.

Comcast Business Gateway modem/router with static addressing provides one address for an externally accessible web/mail server on one of its four RJ45 LAN ports. The second RJ45 LAN port provides a second external address with NAT & DHCP to an internal private 10.1.10.x network connected to a 24-port Netgear gigabit switch. The Netgear is our home's primary switch, with most of the ports going to different jacks thrpughout our house. We have various PCs and Macs, a home server and other similar devices hardwired through the house jacks back to the Netgear receiving DHCP assignments from the Comcast router.
We've had (1) Airport Extreme base station (last generation, not the tall one) connected to the network, also receiving a DHCP IP address from the Comcast box. It's set to bridging mode, cabled from its WAN port by CAT5e to the Netgear switch and offering a Wi-Fi SSID with WPA2 PSK. NAT/DHCP etc is disabled. IPv6 is set to link-local only. No disks attached. Wireless channels set to Automatically.
At this point we have fairly smooth network performance, everything connects immediately (iOS devices, Android devices, utility boxes, computers, etc) and 0% apparent packet loss.
We have some weak Wi-Fi coverage on the far side of the house and I'd like to establish a roaming network, with a new Airport Express (most recent gen) plugged into a wall jack on that side of the house, cabled by Ehternet back to the Netgear, and set up identically. Same SSID and PSK. But when I activate this, I'm finding the network gets anywhere from 88% to 98% packet loss pinging the Comcast router and going outbound. And none of the iOS devices I tried could establish a functional network connection.
I tried replacing the Airport Express with another similar Airport Express, to same effect. I set the Airport Express to create a second SSID and that seemed to work OK, but then I had two distinct networks instead of a roaming network. I also tried disabling DHCP on the Comcast router and enabling it on the Airport Extreme Base Station, but still had the same packet loss. I also tried setting one, the other, and then both Airport boxes to static addressess bypassing the DHCP for their LAN-side connections (although still bridging) and still too much packet loss. No matter what I do, I can't seem to establish a functional Ethernet-connected roaming network with both Airport boxes.
    Any ideas?

Thank you for the reply. The Netgear switch I'm using is a GS724T -- it has management features which I'm working through, but all the ports are set to auto-negotiate and the port the Airport Express is on is lit for 100baseT. I didn't see any way to set the MTU in the Airport Utility menus/buttons.
When I join the Airport Express to the network, it sets up the roaming network as intended. But then performance all across the switch goes downhill -- even when pinging from a PC attached to one of the switch ports to the Comcast router I get 90% packet loss or worse, so that nothing seems to get out or in until I disconnect the Airport Express.. It's that dramatic a difference. It doesn't make sense to me that a wireles roaming network across the two Airport boxes should kill performance through the router...
