Three libraries, three iPods, lost music, empty playlists

My wife, daughter, and I have three iPods and three libraries (we use the option key when starting up iTunes). We store all the music files on an external HD. Today, while cleaning up a bunch of duplicate files/folders from a system reinstall, I deleted all the music files Ouch! Not to worry, I have the iPods and Senuti. If I simply reimport the music, I get ! signs on every track, and empty playlists. With Senuti, I can drag playlists one at a time and they seem to repopulate the existing playlists nicely. But at over 150 playlists per iPod, it's a lengthy process. Can't select more than one playlist at a time in either Senuti or iTunes, and haven't been able to find a helpful Doug's script. Is there a way to speed up this process? After being unable to reassociate the songs in the library with the playlists, I simply deleted my whole library, and am now redragging one playlist at a time. I will do the same with my wife's iPod and then my daughter's, being careful not to sync and overwrite them. My daughter's nano is set to auto-update so I will have to move her library to a different location, I think, so it won't auto-update and delete all her music. Help!

I haven't used it for awhile but can't you simply
download the playlist without downloading the music?
I wish, but it doesn't seem to work that way. Senuti will let you download the music IN the playlist, but not just the playlist info. Same, AFAICT, with iPodRip.
What I may do is the following:
1. Delete everything (scary).
2. Restore from my iPod first (I'm Dad, mine is biggest!).
3. Duplicate the resulting Library and playlists to a new library for my wife, and rename it.
4. Delete a few playlists she doesn't want and restore the playlists that (she wants but I don't want) from her iPod using Senuti.
5. Repeat for my daughter. She has a nano and not much music, so this will be much faster. Her tastes run to standard pop fare, no classical.
I think, when all is said and done, I will have one Music folder with all the actual MP3s, AACs, and the occasionall AIFF in it, and three libraries corresponding to the three iPods with Library subsets of the total Music folder.
Does that sound about right?

lost itunes on computer. put disk back in to reload when i pluged in ipod all music was gone on both ipod and itunes. but the free space on the bottom of the page was still the same. i used to have 650songs on ipod. now i put 350songs back on but ipod says its full no more room for songs.what to do how do i find my old songs and get them to go back to ipod???? please help anyone

Chris, to get back the space on your iPod, you will have to restore it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
The reason you both lost your music is probably because you have the iPod set to auto-update. When you plugged into a new computer with an empty library it automatically updated your iPod library to the new (empty) one. The only way to get the music back is to update it on the original computer again.
If you want to plug into other computers, go to the iPod prefs in iTunes and select MANUAL UPDATE. Now when you plug your iPod into a computer you have to manually drag-and-drop songs onto your iPod library or hit delete to delete songs.

  • Lost music and playlist when updating to itunes 11

I have updated my windows computer to the latest iTunes software (11) and when I've opened iTunes, all of the music I've added or purchased for the past year or so (a lot of music) is now not showing as being on my computer, but is showing as on the cloud, and its showing as if I need to download the music to be able to play it.
I have also lost all playlists I've created, and they have reverted back to an old set of playlists from about a year ago.
I think when the new iTunes has downloaded, its reverted back to an old iTunes library with old podcasts, playlists etc, but still recognises that my music is somewhere in the cloud.
I like the new layout of iTunes 11, but I want my content, playlists etc to go back to the way they were yesterday!
I'm hoping its as simple as restoring a file, or finding a folder (I've looked for what looks to be the most recent content folder, but this doesnt seem to help).
    Please help me.....

I figured it out. I was trying to create the Smart Playlist for podcasts on the iPod, but I needed to create it on iTunes instead.

  • ITunes "lost" music library, playlists...

...Did an add folder to library and it appears that everything shows up in iTunes (can never be sure), but lost all playlists, album titles for audio books that were added after downloaded, and any information I manually added to music/audiobooks after they were downloaded... Why would iTunes drop an entire library. Nothing changed in terms of location of library (on ext HD), configuration of pc (winxp)
Big question - any way to reestablish playlists without having to manually recreate?

I have a similar issue. But my "my music" folder was moved from my docs to "c" - because my office server was backing up my library. I can always reload the music (by adding the folder to the library). The music all re-appears in I-Tunes, but all of my playlists are gone. This happens to me at least every two weeks, particularly if I am working away from the office.
Would love to be able to re-establish my playlists w/o manually re-creating as well (which I must have done at least 5 times already)...

  • HT201272 Lost iPod, lost music. On my old computer I had almost 16 gigs of music on iTunes some of which was purchased and most of which was put on there from my CD collection or from CDs borrowed from friends.

On my old computer I had almost 16 gigs of music in iTunes, some of which was purchased and most of which was put on there from my CD collection and from CDs borrowed from friends. When I got a new computer, only about half of that music, including all music purchased, wound up in iTunes. I didn't worry about this as all 16 gigs were still on my iPod. Then I lost my iPod and about 8 gigs of music.Because it was there in iTunes on my old computer, I assume it still exists somewhere. I would like to retrieve it somehow. Can anyone help me do that?

Unless you had subscribed to iTunes Match and uploaded that music to it then no, it won't be stored anywhere. You haven't got it on a backup e.g. an external drive ?

  • IPod/Lost Music Problem

My computer (running windows) recently got a virus, i was forced into formatting the computer. I had all of my music on my iPod (with color display), so i figured i would find a program to get my music back onto my harddrive. However once i connected the iPod to the computer after formatting, it did not recognize the iPod. i gave it about a half an hour, but nothing happened. The Do not disconnect icon appeared, but nothing happened. I gave it another 30 minutes or so, but then i finally disconnected it, figuring that there wasnt much i could do. The Do Not disconnect icon stayed, however, and is still on the screen. I've tried resetting it, by holding down Select and Play (Connected and Disconnected with a Power Supply, with no progress. What can i do, its the only backup of my music library. Please, i really really need this music library back, is there anything i can do?

First, a reset is a hard thing to do. It's NOT easy. The suggestion about laying it flat in this knowledgebase article might help.
Second, whenever you see 'Do Not Disconnect' it means your iPod is communicating with your computer. Do not assume it's not because it's not showing up in iTunes.
Ipod does not appear in iTunes may offer some help.

  • Didn't sync - lost music - how can I get my music /playlists to show on ipod?

my ipod had music and playlists - I disconnected without syncing and music is gone.  Ipod says no music but i know it's still in there because it's using storage and I can see my music when I go in to view as USB

Well in the end you'll have to restore your iPod either way.
If you want to be able to copy everything from the iPod to your PC first before the restore process, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • How do I set up individual accounts for our families three iPods, while being able to use the same music library?

My family has three iPod touches. They are all different. We want to be able to set up individual accounts for each of them.  When we have them all under the same account, every time we sync, they sync the last person's music and app choices. Help.

Yu can use the same account.  Just in the Music and App and other panes for the iPod check the boxes that say sync only checked item.  You do not want to check sync the entire library.
    See:

  • I have an iPod Classic 5th Gen.  After 1 month I've lost all my music and playlist files.  The only files left are music I have purchased from iTunes.  How do I restore my music library to my iPod?

I have an iPod Classic 5th Generation.  I have not used it for about one month.  When I turned it on, I had lost all my music and playlist files.  The only thing left on the iPod was the music and audio books I have purchased from iTunes store.  I tried to delete everything on the ipod by sliding the hold button and then pressing the center button and the menu and I saw the apple logo on the screen but the iPod wouldn't reboot.  Any suggestions as to how I can delete everything on the iPod and then plug it into my computer to restore my music library?  I am using a Windows 7 operating system.

Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
if it  does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
    Connect back to the Mac
When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
    Sync your library.
    Good Luck!

  • Ipod Shuffle suddenly emptied after two to three days not use..

I had a problem which is my ipod shuffle suddenly emptied after two to three days i left in my room. What's the problem actually can be turn be like this since it's the first time i through it..please send me an email regarding this at [email protected] Thank You!

Okay, and thanks for re-posting your photos. I have to agree that it definitely does look like crimping and would expect any continuity checks run on it to show an open or two. That would certainly explain your symptoms, but it's not the answer for all such cases, i.e., BLD, being reported here.
I've now purchased two 'broken' Shuffle's on eBay, both coming off of M$ systems and reporting the blinkies. The first was Alive on Arrival and is still living happily on a daughter's eMac. The second was totally dead, with no reaction at all to anything I did; it's now disassembled, with no evidence of your crimping on the ribbon cable, while I mull over buying an LI battery and getting someone to solder it in for me.
In your place I'd certainly be taking my evidence to Apple and pointing out that, at the end of the day, it was just a matter of pure luck that it managed to last as long with this defect as it did. I think you should be able to convince them to give you some sort of satisfaction on this, but appreciate your desire not to go through the bother of it.

  • IPod lost my playlist contents, and some music too

I'm a bit confused with a problem 've had with my iPod, which is something of a rarity for me - I have not had one problem with my iPod 2GB nano! I've had it since April 2006 and everything has been fine.
However, I now have 2 problems, which are probably linked. The first is since I updated to Vista, I obviously had to update to the latest versions of iTunes. The problem being, the program seems to take ages to start. We're talking 3-4 minutes, whereas it used to be instant on XP. It will sit on a screen like this for ages:
    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/alex_ncfc/itunesprob.jpg
Before it slowly all appears bit by bit. This is the latest version. Also, each time it acts as if my iPod has been connected for the first time, asking for the iPod name etc etc. This never used to cause a problem, until the other day I started iTunes - and noticed all my music had gone!!! On closer inspection, (most of - see later) the music was still all there, in the "music" bit under the ipod menu. My playlist headings are all still there too. But there is nothing inside them. And I have no way of remembering what goes under each playlist - I had had the same contents on it for ages! Not only that, but some of my music must have gone, (and i have no idea of knowing what!) because my 2GB was full to the brim. However, it now shows as:
    http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i185/alex_ncfc/itunesspace.jpg
Any ideas here? Is there any "backup" made of my playlists anywhere so I can restore them and therefore be able to know what music i had on my iPod? I have no idea what has gone wrong, and I am gutted by this. Also, using iTunes to put everything back would seem a chore as it seems so unresponsive these days.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

    yea, it worked, thanks
i kinda wish that wasn't default, cause it really confuses the heck out of you XD

  • Three ipod cLassics fail to upate and lost everything. wont restore!

I have had three ipods crash and loose everything on them, itunes says to resore but cannot. Is it my windows 7 or what?

    First try this
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
If does not manage to solve it, connect your 3G iPod with a PC, make sure that you connect your iPod via Firewire port and pre-install the iPod updater (prefer 6-2006 version) with the PC. Try to do a Restore there, but please not that does not matter whether you can complete the Restore or not, after a while, connect your iPod back with your Mac, it will get recognized.

  • Three iPods - One owner

Okay I have three iPods: 30 gb video, shuffle and a 4 gb video. How do I set up separate music libraries for each of them in iTunes? The 30 gb video was my original library. The shuffle was my second purchase and I set up a library for it. The 4 gb video is a recent gift and I cannot for the life of me manage to put any tunes on it. Help! (I feel like I've gone brain dead.)
    Thanks in advance,
    jakera

First off, only have one iPod plugged in at once.
I use method 2 from this article, by just syncing different playlists to my different ipods:

  • Itunes doesn't see any of my three Ipods

So after years of hassle-free ITunes, I'm pulling my hair out. Installed Snow Leopard last week, very shortly thereafter Itunes starting hanging alot. Won't recognize my three ipods (nano's and a 60Gb, older versions) but oddly does recognize my Itouch.
I have trashed Itunes and reinstalled, no luck. Have tried all the various wires/ports, but I know which wires worked where in the paste and so am confident that is not the problem. Only change has been to upgrade to Snow Leopard this last week.
    Some kind soul, please help?

    hmmm...I've made Itunes mad.
So I tried the first (disk repair). Messages as follow:
Repairing permissions for “Robosalsa's Hard Drive”
    Permissions differ on "private/etc/postfix/main.cf.default", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -r--r--r-- .
    Repaired "private/etc/postfix/main.cf.default".
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "Users", should be 80, group is 0.
Permissions differ on "Users", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxrwx .
    Repaired "Users".
Okay, something was wrong but did get repaired
Then I ran Disk Repair again and only got:
    Permissions repair complete
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    That's nothing to worry about.
That didn't fix the problem (same as before, Itunes hung when I plugged in an IPOD).
So I tried the second suggestion, i.e. changing the read only to read and write. That made Itunes mad. Now whenever I open Itunes, it hangs immediately. I changed back the permissioning, but Itunes still hangs whenever it opens. So, I tried (a) recreating Itunes libary and playlists (from apple boards) - no luck, Itunes hangs as soon as Itunes reopened and (b) trashing Itunes 8.2.1.6 and installing 9.0.2 - no luck, still hangs as soon as opened. Very weird!!
So I have Time Machine doing a back-up of my drives, never tried using it. It is time to try?
I'm not sure making a backup of a troubled system will be useful. You should have TM backups of your pre-problem system in order to be of help.
Or some other thoughts? Maybe trashing all of Itunes per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 and then trying to reinstall? I am just concerned I lose all my playlists and such.
I'm in the office right now and working with an XP machine. But you can export your playlist(s) to a safe location and re-import them later. Highlight the playlist you'd like to save and then check for the export option. I expect it will be under the file menu. Also backup (maybe to a USB stick) the folders such as +album artwork+, +previous iTunes libraries+ etc.
+Maybe trashing all of Itunes per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 and then trying to reinstall?+
Yes and yes. Try that and repair permissions. restart your machine and re-install iTunes (latest version). put the backed up folders etc back in the usual place (eventually overwriting was has been recreated there). import your playlists and connect one of your iPods.
    good luck !
