'Three Prong' (Earthed) UK Mag Safe Adapter Query

Hey guys and gals,
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and was quick to find out that when using the MagSafe adapter with the UK adapter (the one that fits directly into the 'brick', not the one that has a cable that fits into the 'brick'.) it causes static build up - I understand this is because the cable is earthed by featuring metallic contacts on the groove that slides over the pin on the power block.
However, I often don't require the long cable and was wondering if there are any third party adapters that are simply the plug but do feature this extra contact for earthing?

This has been a "characteristic" of Apple notebooks since at least the first Alu Powerbooks, gerkers. I ran into it myself while working , with the "three prong" cord attached to a PB12" 867MHz model, while staying in some units in outback Queensland that clearly had faulty earth wiring, and I've also experienced it using the two prong "duck head" adaptor. I've even noticed it on a polycarbonate "iBook" when touching a screw that went into its metal chassis. So it has been around for many , many years, and I've yet to hear of anyone being genuinely injured by it. I've always wondered myself, as you do, though, why Apple don't simply provide a three prong earthed duckhead adaptor , rather than the two pronged one. At least in places with no earth problems it would prevent any concern or discomfort.
You will find a thread about it containing an extensive discussion of the likely causes at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10640713#10640713
Cheers

  • Replacing "T" Mag Safe Adapter

Typically, I do not participate on these sorts of boards; however, I have had a pretty unfortunate experience today with Apple which I'd like to not only communicate but also seek help. As a preface, the city I live does not have an official Apple Store but only an Authorized Servicer.
As some of you might know already, there was a recent class action lawsuit put against Apple regarding the model "T" Mag Safe Adapter. Rather than going to court, they decided to settle. For those that purchased replacement cords, they were able to be refunded the full or partial amount; for those that did not, but experienced fraying (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4127), they'd be able to receive a new adapter under Apple's Adapter Replacement Program by either going to an Authorized Servicer, an actual Apple Store, or by calling Apple Care.
When I went to the Authorized Servicer, they were of no help, stating that I would have to go to an actual store.
When I called Apple Care they incorrectly told me that the replacement was only good for up to three years since the purchase of the laptop. This was told to me despite the clear statement communicated on the Class Action Lawsuit website, https://www.adaptersettlement.com/.
Under the FAQ it was stated:
"For Adapters shipped with a Subject Computer, you will have three years from the date of purchase of the Subject Computer or May 21, 2012, whichever is later, to claim a replacement adapter. For Adapters purchased separately, you will have three years from the date of purchase of the Adapter or May 21, 2012, whichever is later, to claim a replacement. If you do not claim a replacement adapter within these time periods, you will lose your right to obtain a replacement. Apple will continue the Adapter Replacement Program until December 31, 2012; Apple will have no obligation to honor adapter replacement claims made after December 31, 2012. "
Obviously, May 21, 2012 has not occurred yet and therefore I ought to be able to replace my adapter.
Since I am still a poor college student, I'm not in the type of situation where I can simply drop $72 for a new adapter... Oh, yesterday the adapter completely stopped working due to the fraying...
Today Apple may have lost me as a customer.
If anyone has any suggestions for how I ought to proceed, please let me know.

Call AppleCare, ask to speak to a senior advisor, and give them the name and location of the AASP you went to that told you you had to go to an Apple store.  When you call, be firm, but civil and demand Apple get in contact with that store.  They will then most likely comply and give you a new charger.  If still no resolution, call Apple Customer Relations 1-800-676-2775.  If you can, follow up with the results.  I'd be interested to hear. Good luck.

  • Mag safe adapter for macbook pro 15 inch mid 2009 model

is it safe to  use a 60 watts mag safe adapter for my macbook pro 15 inch mid 2009 model. i went to istore to have a battery replacement and they advice me to change my 60 watts mag safe to 85 watts because it is not compatible.....

    use the 85w charger.
"Power adapters for Intel-based Apple notebooks are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook. "

  • Mag Safe adapter comes off too easily.

I suggest using a stronger magnet to keep the same great idea of the Mag Safe adapter but also making it come out inadvertently less often.

Interesting as I was thinking the exact opposite -- mine is so strong that I wish it had a weaker magnet. If I tripped on the cord it may pull my MacBook right off the desk. I can't imagine mine ever coming out by accident.

  • Mag Safe Adapter Compatibility

Sorry if this has been asked but I can't find a thread on it...
Can I use a mag safe power adapter from an older (2007) Intel Macbook Pro on a new unibody Macbook Pro? Are they compatible?

Yes - the 85 W adapter from the previous MBPs will work fine with the new MBPs. Note that the 13" uMBP and the low end 15" uMBP actually come with 60 W adapters, but the 85 W adapters will work with those as well (the MBP will just draw the power it needs).

  • 85W Mag Safe adapter plug catches on fire

The plug portion on the charger block has begun to melt as a result of sparking and flaming at the base of the prongs inside the adapter.  The plugs are no longer retractable and have seized as a result of the melted plastic caused by the flames.  This is my second charger that has done this–so this issue might possibly be linked to the computer itself.  Has anyone seem similar issues?

  • Mag safe adapter's cord cracked and split open

Is it normal for a magsafe macbook pro adapter's cord to cracked and split open showing all the wires inside in a span of 7 months? I went to the Authorized Reseller and they told me to just buy a new one since my warranty is over.
I bought my macbook last year, my first adapter cord melted within 7 months. They sent me a new one free of charged (still covered by warranty) and this new one after 7 months, again the cord's rubber started to become brittle and cracked near the USB plug, working its way up. I have to wrap electric tape almost 1/4 of my cord's length to prevent me from electrocuting. Am I over reacting or its just normal and things like these are expected to happen within half a year or so?

Its very odd, Ive seen a lot of macbook chargers, many with cords so dirty, they were near black at places,....treated bad.
(not referring to you) people for some reason love to abuse chargers, after they use them, they wrap them so tight they scream, bending the cords, kinks and knots. Only seen a handful of cracked wire casings and never exposed inner wiring.
You storing your case in a steaming hot car often?  That will crack the wire casing quick.

  • My mag safe adapter is broken???

  • DOES MAG SAFE POWER ADAPTER WORK THE SAME AS A PORTABLE POWER ADAPTER??

My power adapter broke, so I just purchased a Mag Safe power adapter. My computer works when it is plugged in, but it says that there are no batteries available, and it is not charging.
Is there a difference between the two, and what could be the problem?

What exactly do you mean? There is only one AC adapter for the MacBook and it is a Mag Safe adapter, what are you refering to when you say portable adapter?

  • Mag Safe Light

When I first connect the mag safe adapter to the MPB, the light is very faint. Sometimes it doesn't appear at all. When I disconnect and reconnect, the light comes back on. Is this something I should have looked at?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If tapping on the collar affects the light, then very likely there is a wiring problem inside where you can't see it. here is an article that you might want to read:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
However, I would also be concerned about your battery swelling--this is a known issue, and batteries are not supposed to swell. You might find this article of interest:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
This article describes some of the characteristics of a faulty battery, and even if your computer is not one of the ones listed, it's still true that a battery that swells and becomes distorted is faulty, and you should be able to get a replacement at no cost. You need to do this right away, because the swelling can exert pressure from below and eventually cause damage. A swollen battery can also leak. So you really want to stop using it immediately.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, you should be able to make an appointment with the genius bar and get an immediate battery replacement. At the same time, your power adaptor can be evaluated and likely replaced. But do take care of both of these problems right away--both have the potential to do great harm.
    Good luck!

  • Mag Safe LED Blinks From Green to Amber

I have a MBP bought in March 2007. I recently have been having a problem with the Mag Safe adapter. When the battery is about fully charged the LED on the Mag Safe connector starts to blink from green to amber. The blinking is rather constant, about 2 seconds a part. When I have the battery icon from the menu bar highlighted it shows "Calculating time..." and the LED is amber, and then quickly changes to "Battery is charged" and the LED turns green.
It seems that the computer doesn't know when to switch from battery to AC power when the battery is fully charged and connected to a power adapter.
I don't have an extra power adapter to try this on, as well as I don't have an extra battery. The Mag Safe connector at the MBP is perfectly fine, there is no fraying or anything like that. The wire does mostly stay wrapped around the power adapter hooks, so I am also thinking that it might be something wrong with the adapter itself, that the wires might be worn.
Thanks for any help that you can give me.

I have an issue somewhat similar to this - the battery indicator switches between claiming that it's charging and full, with the Magsafe adapter's light changing along with it. In my case it wasn't as regular as yours, but occurred while charging.
I tried calibrating the battery (instructions are here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2339.html ) but it doesn't seem to have had an affect. Worse, the system had shut off when the battery got low (~12% power remaining) twice now, although there was one time between those two when it went down to 5% and I shut it down myself. I have 89 cycles on the year-old battery and iStat pro claims that its health is at 39%. To add to the mix, last night I watched a 26-minute movie which ate up 20% of the battery (this is about normal), and then I watched a second one that dropped the battery by a bit under 60%. I'm guessing that the battery has some dead cells. I have extended Applecare coverage, but have heard that it doesn't apply to batteries. Regardless, people have linked to pages showing that Apple will replace batteries if they're in a poor state and under 300 cycles. I'll head to an Apple store some time in the near future and see what the consensus is.
Long story short, my battery is probably failing, and the light changing behavior started around the time that I began to suspect that. It may be indicative of a dying battery on your end, as well.

  • Mag safe charger started small fire

  • Is there lead in the Mag Safe power adapter's cord/cable?

I was just wondering if there is lead in the Mag Safe power adapter's cord/cable specifically, and if there is any in apple's cords/cables in general. I couldn't find anywhere to email apple about it.

I don't have specific information, but the power adapter is certified for use in the EU, and the EU has very strict lead-free requirements. Chances are the printed circuit board inside the power adapter also is manufactured with lead-free solder. Bismuth can be substituted for lead, though the resulting amalgam will have a higher melting point, so is harder to work with and increases assembly costs a little bit. Despite economic incentive to use lead, responsible manufacturing can avoid it.
There are probably much more significant exposure risks in your environment than the cord on your MacBook charger. If your home is over 20 years old and has copper pipes, chances are they were sweated together with lead bearing solder. Also, old faucets often contain lead in their parts.
Even if the cord did contain lead, it isn't likely to ablate into your environment; avoid chewing on the cord, and don't allow children or pets to chew the cord either.

  • Does the world traveler kit work on the 60 watt mag safe power adapter

does the world traveler power adapter kit work with the 60 watt mag safe power adapter.

    Hi Aiian,
The kit contains all the plug ends needed to travel around the world. the small flat bladed square piece that slides on the 60 watt mag safe charger for use in north america was lost on vacation. I purchased this kit because it appeared to contain two plug adapters that looked exactly the same, one flat blade and one flat blade with holes at the end. when i tried one of the ends nothing happened (no charge).Wondering if it contaians a resistor inside? Mac offered only to replace it if it was faulty, but
    I lost mine.
