Three WRT54G Routers on one subnet

I support a tcp/ip network that has three WRT54G Routers on a cat 5 backbone which are all on one subnet 192.168.2.96/27. There's one WAP54G configured as a wireless repeater for a sales area in the corner of the office where there's no drop. The internet connection is provided by Comcast via cable modem. The office manager purchased the routers because they were cheaper then the WAP54G Access points and the cabling was already in place. There must be a real tight budget there. I configured Router1 (WRT54G) as a gateway to the Cable Modem and enabled DHCP beginning with octal 105 leaving 8 ip addresses for static and 22 for DHCP devices. The other two (Router2 and Router3) WRT54G's I've disabled DHCP and enabled them as Routers instead of Gateways with RIP disabled. The WAP54G Repeater has the wireless MAC Addressed of Router1's in its Repeater settings and has no cable to the network.
Since all DHCP devices on the network have its default gateway set as Router1, everyone is able to get on the internet. While I was configuring the network I noticed that it didn't matter if I made Router2 and 3 routers or gateway as everyone appeared to be working okay and were able to get on the internet but in the setup it says to enable Router for all devices not directly connected to an internet connection. I'm guessing that this might make a difference only if I had two different subnets in the office. Since Router2 and 3 are basically dumb to the internet gateway, they can't see anything beyond their own ip address and just pass packets back and forth almost like a repeater.
I guess my question here would be, is there any advantage of using the WAP54G over the WRT54G as an access point when wired to cat 5?

I guess you have connected the WRT54Gs through their LAN ports and the internet port is empty. That's the way how you use them as access points.
If you connect them that way the gateway or router mode is irrelevant. The mode only works between the LAN and WAN. They did not design the WRT really for use as access point with an open internet port and therefore this is not documented in the help file. I would leave the setting on gateway as then it is a setting less to change back in case you must use it as gateway later again. If you use router mode, make sure RIP is disabled. The router is not working as router thus it needs no routing information...
Regarding your question: the answer is only the obvious one: except for the more extended configuration options in the WAP I don't think their is an advantage for either one.

  • Network security - using two wireless WRT54G Routers

    I have lots of  ports on my router open for numerous family software applications that are all on one computer and I would like to isolate these risky activities from the rest of my network.
    I recently read I could use two routers, plug one router into another,  assign each a different starting IP address (such as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1). Then attach my at-risk PCs--to the router that's directly connected to my broadband modem, and all  other computers to the second router.
    Internet traffic to and from the unsafe PC area would then not reach my secure subnetwork at all.
    I currently use a WRT54G V5...does buying a second one and using it as described make sense? It sounds like a rather inexpensive way to add security to my network.
    I assume the second router gets connected from it's internet jack to one of the port jacks on the first router? Is there anything else that would need to be changed or set in either router to make this work?
    Can I please ask if u respond to try and keep your response at a level that a non expert could understand.....I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks for everyones advice!

    Thanks for the quick response....it is disappointing to see that I would lose the ability to share files......I  assume this is also true for printers as well??? Do you have another solution that you think would do a better job?
    Anyway I did get a rather detailed response on how to make it work and it's in a fashion that even I could understand.
    I thought I would share it in case anyone else had a interest to isolate a computer.
    Thanks
    With regards to your concern, the setup that you suggested does address your concern. With this setup, we are somehow creating two networks on your location. In this manner, the computer that needs the set of ports will not be part of the network of the second router thus, it will not be able to affect the other computers.
    With this type of setup, we will just have to leave the current settings of the WRT54G v5 (as long as its working properly this time). All we have to configure is the second router wherein we will have to change its LAN IP Address and also, configure its wireless settings in order for the said router to provide wired and wireless connection to all computers connecting to it. Please allow me to give you the steps.
    Once we have the second router available, please connect one of the computers straight to the second router using one of the four ports (Ethernet port). With the configuration, only the second router and the computer will be connected with each other.
    Before setting up the second router, I suggest that we do a hard reset on the router to make sure that it is on default settings and that we have a stable connection during the setup.
    Here’s how to do a reset:
    1. Locate the reset button of the router at the back panel.
    2. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds using a pen or a paper clip.
    3. Release the reset button.
    Configuring the Second Router:
    1. Go to your desktop and double click on Internet Explorer (Located on the Start Menu in Windows XP).
    2. When "Internet Explorer" opens type 192.168.1.1 into the "Address" bar and click on Go.
    3. The "Enter Network Password" window will appear.
    4. Skip user name and type admin (admin is the default password) as the password, and click OK.
    5. Go to Wireless Tab.
    6. Change SSID (e.g. Vic or your name or last name).
    7. Change channel to 11.
    8. Hit save Settings.
    9. Click on the sub tab Wireless Security.
    10. Set the Security Mode to WEP.
    Using pass phrase Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits):
    1. Type a pass phrase.
    2. Click Generate.
    3. Copy key1 on a piece of paper (10hex character).
    4. Hit Save Settings.
    For using manual key entry Encryption Level 40/64bit (10 hex digits)
    1. Under Key 1 type a 10 digit character from A-F and 0-9 (e.g.: A0B3F58C9E, 0123456789, ABCDEFABCD).
    2. Hit Save Settings.
    3. Click on the Setup Tab.
    4. Change the Local IP Address to "192.168.2.1".
    5. Click “Save Settings”.
    Finishing the Connection:
    1. Shut down all computers.
    2. Unplug the power from the back of both routers.
    3. Unplug the power from the modem.
    4. Wait for 30 second.
    5. Connect the WRT54G v5 router (using its Internet Port) to the Cable Modem.
    6. Connect the WRT54G v5 (using one of the four Ethernet ports) to the second router (using its Internet/WAN port).
    7. Power up the modem.
    8. Wait for the lights to stop blinking.
    9. Power up the routers.
    10. Start up your computer.

  • 1 modem - 2 routers (chained) - 2 subnets (cross-traffic) - 2 dhcp

    My goal is trying to use 1 isp modem, chain 2 linksys routers, creating 2 subnets that pass traffic between them, having each subnet served by its own dhcp. So how I started was by setting up Router 1 (R1) to use address space 192.168.2.0. Straightforward, tested, everything works fine. Then I turned on Router 2 (R2) standalone, connected a PC directly to a LAN port on it and configured it for address space 192.168.1.0. Gave it an WAN address of 192.168.2.2 (from R1). Disconnected PC and connected a LAN port of R1 to the WAN port of R2. I then went back to R1 and added a static route 192.168.1.0/24 -> 192.168.2.2. I then connected the PC to the LAN port of R1 and expected everything to be ok, but, it wasn't. The PC can ping R1 but not R2. If I connect the PC to a LAN port of R2 I can ping both routers. So subnet cross traffic seems to be flowing one way. If I can get that figured out my next question is how to have both dhcp working but restricted to their own subnets. I would think if I can find a way to block cross-traffic on ports 67,68 that would do it. Has anyone done what I'm trying to do? Looking for a little help.
    thx

    Turned off NAT and SPI firewall on slave and widened the subnet mask.
    Now we're getting somewhere.
    Here's the output I've been able to obtain:

  • SF300 and using Subnet Zero and All-Ones Subnet

    Anyone have experience using Subnet Zero and the All-Ones Subnet on the SF300 series switches?
    We have a scenario which we are using an SF300 as a Gateway Device.  We have a /29 broken up into two /30 subnets.  We have two routers which need to be isolated from each other, but use the same Internet service/circuit.
    We are in need of adding a third router which needs to be isolated from the other two. After requesting additonal IP addresses, our provider has claimed we need to use the Subnet Zero and All-Ones Subnet to make effecient use of the IP's which will ultimately give us the additional IPs we need.
    I am not familair with thsi practice or setup. Can anyone provide insight and/or if the SF300 series supports this?

    Hi Brian, this switch will not support an all-one subnet mask.

  • WRT54G routers losing settings...

    I'm seeing some weirdness.
    I have two WRT54G routers.
    The main one is connected to my cable modem, and pretty much runs with factory defaults - other than the password being changed.
    The second one is used to extend my wireless range. It is connected to the first one through one of the main ports (not the internet port) and is configured to use IP 192.168.1.2, and with DHCP turned off.
    They work fine. Mostly.
    But every once in a while, the modems spontaneously lose their memory and are reset back to factory defaults. Which causes problems, as both modems think they are the ones in charge, and I have to go through and reset them both.
    Any idea what is causing it?
    I'm running v1.00.6 on both of them.

    hi .....only one option here.....upgrade to firmware version 1.01.0 on both WRT54G's

  • I downloaded an album on itunes using my new itouch; but it's only allowing me to put three songs at any one time into the music app...how can i get it to just move them all in there?

    i downloaded an album on itunes using my new itouch; but it's only allowing me to put three songs at any one time into the music app...how can i get it to just move them all in there?

    hi philly, thanks for getting back to me, especially on such a busy day.
    I don't think that's quite the issue though. I bought an album and it appears in 'my purchases' within the itunes app. Yet, in order to listen to the music, i must use the 'music' app and in this application, there are only three tracks displayed at any one time from my downloaded album.
    I can 'download all' from the 'my purchases' section but that still doesn't help, it just keeps the last three tracks downloaded in the music app.
    I have the 'icloud' enabled and wondered if it had anything to do with that.
    i have successfully downloaded another full album totally into the music app, but this first album is causing me problems.

  • How to combine three PDF documents into one PDF document ?

    Hi Folks,
    I have a requirement to combine 3 PDF documents into One PDF document, let me explain clearly.
    I have developed two Adobe forms in T.code SFP and I have one PDF docuement which is stored in DMS (T.code CV02n), and now I want to combine these three PDF documents into one pdf.
    I have tried below link, but only 50% can able to do my requirement.
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/404e4dc1-a79c-2d10-a7b5-9a266dfed9cb?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true
    Is there any best solution to fix this.
    Best Regards,
    Naresh Kumar.

    Hi Lukas,
    Thanks for your response on this.
    Krisztian's solution will work/merge only for Adobe forms created in T.code SFP but can't merge with the pdf document which is sitting in CV02N (This doesn't have Adobe form name in T.code SFP), this is what I understood.
    And one more bad news is we are not able to install that unix file in our client system, it is not compatable.
    Best Regards,

  • Add three stored procs in one big proc and add exception handling

    I have three proc's,
    1. sp_staging
    2.  sp_upload
    3. sp_process.
    Now, I have to create a new proc as sp_daily which has the other three proc's in it in the same order.
    if the first proc sp_staging fails, then the sp_daily proc should stop executing the other proc's which are in the order.
    CREATE PROCEDURE sp_daily
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    EXEC sp_staging (already has EXCEPTION handling IN it)
    GO
    EXEC sp_upload (already has EXCEPTION handling IN it)
    GO
    EXEC sp_process (already has EXCEPTION handling IN it)
    GO
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    -- If any of the above proc's fail, the next proc's should not be executed
    END CATCH
    Something like this????

    Hi naveej,
    Whether the Stored Procedure sp_daily stops executing if the first sp_staging fails depends on how you code. To give a better demonstration, I will show the scenario that sp_upload runs with error. Please see the below code.
    --create the scenario
    USE master;
    IF db_id('TestDB') IS NULL
    CREATE DATABASE TestDB;
    USE TestDB;
    IF OBJECT_ID('T1') IS NOT NULL
    DROP TABLE T1;
    GO
    CREATE TABLE T1
    procName varchar(99)
    IF OBJECT_ID('sp_staging') IS NOT NULL
    DROP PROCEDURE "sp_staging";
    GO
    CREATE PROCEDURE "sp_staging" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator; -- when @denominator=0, error occurs
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_staging finished');
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    END CATCH
    GO
    IF OBJECT_ID('sp_upload') IS NOT NULL
    DROP PROCEDURE "sp_upload";
    GO
    CREATE PROCEDURE "sp_upload" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator;
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_upload finished');
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    DECLARE @ERRMSG VARCHAR(99);
    SELECT @ERRMSG=ERROR_MESSAGE()+'sp_upload failed, process continues';
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES(@ERRMSG);
    END CATCH
    GO
    IF OBJECT_ID('sp_process') IS NOT NULL
    DROP PROCEDURE "sp_process";
    GO
    CREATE PROCEDURE "sp_process" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator;
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_process finished');
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    END CATCH
    GO
    IF OBJECT_ID('sp_daily') IS NOT NULL
    DROP PROCEDURE "sp_daily";
    GO
    CREATE PROCEDURE "sp_daily" @p1Deno FLOAT,@p2Deno FLOAT,@p3Deno FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    EXEC sp_staging @p1Deno;
    EXEC sp_upload @p2Deno;
    EXEC sp_process @p3Deno;
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    INSERT INTO T1 SELECT ERROR_MESSAGE()+'error captured by sp_daily';
    END CATCH
    GO
    --Test Example
    TRUNCATE TABLE T1;
    EXEC sp_daily 1,0,1;
    SELECT * FROM T1;
    We can judge from the rows in T1, sp_daily continued even when there came a error in sp_upload. The reason for the continuity is that the error which occurred in sp_upload was caught and handled by  sp_upload itself. Sp_daily's CATCH block didn't capture
    any error(we didnt see any row like "error captured by sp_daily") so  sp_dailys continued running with no interruption.
    Let’s make a little modification on the sp_upload. see the below code.
    ALTER PROCEDURE "sp_upload" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator;
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_upload');
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    DECLARE @ERRMSG VARCHAR(99),@ErrSeverity INT;
    SELECT @ERRMSG=ERROR_MESSAGE()+'sp_upload failed, process got terminated',@ErrSeverity=ERROR_SEVERITY();
    RAISERROR(@ERRMSG ,@ErrSeverity,1);
    END CATCH
    GO
    --Test Example
    TRUNCATE TABLE T1;
    EXEC sp_daily 1,0,1;
    SELECT * FROM T1;
    At this time,  sp_daily got terminated when  sp_upload encountered an error. Sp_upload didn’t handle the error, it threw the error instead. Then the CATCH block in  sp_daily caught  the error and interrupted sp_daily itself. If you don’t
    need to handle the error which may occur inside of the inner called procedures, the TRY and CATCH block in the procedure which calls them would be enough to catch and handle the errors anywhere it occurs, just remove the blocks from the called ones.
    ALTER PROCEDURE "sp_staging" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator;
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_staging finished');
    GO
    ALTER PROCEDURE "sp_upload" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator;
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_upload finished');
    GO
    ALTER PROCEDURE "sp_process" @denominator FLOAT
    AS
    DECLARE @quotient FLOAT;
    SET @denominator=1/@denominator;
    INSERT INTO T1 VALUES('sp_process finished');
    GO
    ALTER PROCEDURE "sp_daily" @p1Deno FLOAT,@p2Deno FLOAT,@p3Deno FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    EXEC sp_staging @p1Deno;
    EXEC sp_upload @p2Deno;
    EXEC sp_process @p3Deno;
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    INSERT INTO T1 SELECT ERROR_MESSAGE();
    END CATCH
    GO
    --Test Example
    TRUNCATE TABLE T1;
    EXEC sp_daily 1,0,1;
    SELECT * FROM T1;
    As we can see from the above modification,  sp_daily calls  sp_staging, sp_upload, sp_process in order. Sp_staging runs fine so it finishes. When it comes to sp_upload, error gets captured so the execution terminates. Anyway if you hope that the 3
    called procedures  work atomically(it is a pretty common business requirement), which means unless all of the three finish otherwise no one finishes, the TRAN block would help. Please see the below code.
    ALTER PROCEDURE "sp_daily" @p1Deno FLOAT,@p2Deno FLOAT,@p3Deno FLOAT
    AS
    BEGIN TRY
    BEGIN TRAN
    EXEC sp_staging @p1Deno;
    EXEC sp_upload @p2Deno;
    EXEC sp_process @p3Deno;
    COMMIT TRAN;
    END TRY
    BEGIN CATCH
    ROLLBACK TRAN;
    INSERT INTO T1 SELECT ERROR_MESSAGE();
    END CATCH
    GO
    --Test Example
    TRUNCATE TABLE T1;
    EXEC sp_daily 1,0,1;
    SELECT * FROM T1;
    If you have question, feel free to let me know.

  • Two Routers off One Cable Modem?

    Can I run two routers off one cable modem, one a hardwired Windows network and the other an Airport Extreme networking a Powerbook G4 and wireless printer?

    No you cannot - unless you pay your cable internet service provider for two public IP addresses.
    What I would suggest if you already have the base station but have not yet purchased the router:
    - connect the cable modem to the Base Station's WAN port
    - buy a 4- or 8-port ethernet switch. Connect to the switch the LAN port of the Base Station, and all of your hardwired PCs
    What I would suggest if you already have a router and base station:
    - connect the cable modem to the router's WAN port
    - connect all the hardwired PCs to the router's LAN ports
    - connect the Airport Base Station to one of the router's LAN ports, and configure the Base Station to function as a wireless access point per http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx/.59976caa

Drag each quicktime into that screen and arrange in the order you want. You can then delete the stills. The button that appeared when you dropped in the stills will launch a complete show.

  • Mutliple Routers on One Segment

    Hi Everyone,
    Could anybody please explain to me if the following would work?
    My question is, would machine 10.10.160.2 be able to ping machine 10.10.160.66? These are on different subnets and all routes in all routing tables are connected.
    The problem I see is that if the default gateway is set to 10.10.160.58 then the traffic will never leave the first router. COuld anybody please explain to me how I should configure this setup?
    Many thanks,
    Daniel

    There are a couple of things in your environment that are not clear to me. I gather that the devices in the drawing on the left and on the right are routers of some kind. Is the 5500 in the center functioning just as a layer 2 switch or is it also doing layer 3?
    You comment that all routes in the routing table are connected. Do I understand that the router on the left has only a single route in its table 10.10.160.0/26? And do I understand that the router on the right has only two routes in its table (10.10.160.0/26 and 10.10.160.64/26? And do I assume correctly that there is no dynamic routing protocol configured?
    If my understanding is correct then there are at least two solutions that you can consider. You could configure a static route on the left router that would look something like this:
    ip route 10.10.160.64 255.255.255.192 10.10.160.59
    Or you could configure some dynamic routing protocol on both routers, including both subnets of the right router in the routing protocol.
    Either of these solutions would allow the 10.10.160.2 machine to ping the 10.10.160.66 machine. Having the default gateway set to 10.10.160.58 is appropriate and is not itself a problem. The problem in your current environment is that the router on the left has no knowledge of the 10.10.160.64 subnet or how to get there. This is the problem that you must resolve.

  • Anyone put two wlans on two wisms into one subnet?

    We have two WiSM blades on one C6500 switch. We use WiSMs as DHCP relay pointing to central DHCP. Because of the lack of IP subnets, we want to use one /22 subnets for the two WLANs(same SSID) on two wisms. Anyone tried this? Any problems with this setup?
    Thanks!
    Zhenning

    If I understand this correctly, you want to have multiple vlans tied to one ssid. If this is correct, then AP Groups is what you need to configure.

    Unless youare trying to have one subnet and one ssid configured on both WiSM's, which should work.
