Thumb drive files not accesable

When I inserted a thumb drive I having being using for years, I got a recommended message that I should scan and fix my drive, since I did this I can no longer see files and folders on this drive, they are still taking up 60gig of space and my virus scanner
sees there are files, but  explorer shows no files present. When I try to repair this drive it says thee is insufficient space to recover.

Can you format the thumb drive and check?

  • Thumb drive will not accept duplicate numbers altho pics are different from iPhoto. Can numbers/labels be changed?

iPhoto 11, vers. 9.2.3 - Photos downloaded from my camera have a set of numbers which are repeated with each download posing a problem when trying to place them on a CD or thumb drive as the duplicate numbers are not accepted. I have well 2500 photos and possibly dozens of duplicate numbers. I thought I could simply modify the name of each photo but that does not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

    Two simple solutions
1 - export to different desktop folders on the desktop and then drag those folders to the thumb drive - duplicate file names in different folders are fine (you can not have duplicates in the same folder)
2 - export to a desktop folder using the sequential file name option - Exporting From iPhoto - and drag that folder to the Thumb drive

  • My Mac Pro will read thumb-drive but not CF card reader

Can someone help me resolve this problem?
I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5
    (using Leopard).
I had NO problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, BUT,
when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port.
I figured the problem was a bad card reader, so I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos.
Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed.
I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera.
Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?
    Please help!

  • Getting thumb drive files to iPad

I need to get files from a thumb drive to my iPad,would like some help for a NOVICE like me to get this done
    Thanks

    1. transfer the files to your computer, and use iTunes file sharing to transfer them to the app you plan to use them with.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4094?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    or
    2. transfer them to your computer.  Upload them to a cloud based file storage service like dropbox, box.net, 4shared, sugarsync or any other such service that is also supported in the app you plan to use the files in.
2b. open the app on your iPad, login to the online file service, and download the files to the app.
There is no general file system to transfer a file to on an iOS device - you need to transfer files to specific apps, so first you need an app that can work with the files you plan to transfer.

  • Postscript printer driver files not working.

When I download the postscript printer driver file to my mac I get a .sea file. The installation instructions say to copy the "PDFPlugIn file and the Acrobat Distiller (PPD) file" into the extensions folder. But I cannot get the .sea file to do anything. Stuffit expander won't expand them and the .sea file in the extensions folder doesn't seem to do any good.

I think we should try to get a different PPD than that one.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/save-as-pdf-options-not.html#main_InstallAcroPPD
You can download the Acrobat 9 PPD for use with InDesign/Illustrator to help with your Postscript file output.
You can substitute the InDesign file path with the Illustrator one to duplicate the steps.
In the end though, I honestly had to select "Other" in the PPD selection and direct to it manually.
This way it's just a pure PPD, not a SEA file.

  • Parts of Hard-drive files not showing, only on macbook?

Hey guys, I have a hard drive that has been running well until now. When I open a folder in Finder, which contains a large amount of files in it, only the first ten-ish are shown, the rest disappeared. But they are still there, because some missing files are music files imported into iTunes, and when I open iTunes, those "missing" music can still be played. Also, this problem doesn't appear on Windows, when I plug the hard drive on a Windows PC, everything is there again. Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

The Apple System Profiler shows all the correct info except the name is "unknown." The only 2 places that seem wrong are the desktop - no hard drive, and in Disk Utility. I don't know what it's called, but the line directly under the listed hard drive in Disk Utility (74.5 GB WDC WD800JB-00CRA1) should have the name of the hard drive (Macintosh HD) listed but it does not. It should look like this but with an icon of a hard drive in front of each line:
    74.5 GB WDC WD800JB-00CRA1
    Macintosh HD
The second line (Macintosh HD) is not there. The other hard drives have their names listed. Apple seems to think this is a problem but other than running Data Rescue and Disk Warrior (neither of which did anything) they have not given me any other suggestions.
The computer knows the hard drive is there but it won't let me access it. I have done, tried, and checked all the easy stuff. (Cables, any and every type of connection, restarting holding down option + apple + F + O and all the other restart variations with and without the OSX CD, and running "rescue" programs.) Nothing has worked. Short of an exorcism, I'm out of ideas.

  • USB Thumb Drive Not Mounting With Mavericks

I have several Thumb drives (FAT32) that no longer mount on my iMac running Mavericks.
The thumb drives do not show up in finder nor do they show up in disc utilities.
The USB bus still seems to work since other USB devices seem to connect to it, but none
of the thumb drives do.  I have done an SMC and PRAM reset with no luck.  I do not have
TUXERA nor NTFS-3G so nothing their to disable.
I do have a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion and all thumb drives do work with that.
    Out of ideas here.

But given that other USB devices work here — what sorts of other USB devices?
I have 2 external hard drives that work on the very same USB port and an external blu-ray drive as well.
Are there any add-on anti-virus or anti-malware "tools" installed?
    None.  Never have.
To check the USB bus, remove all hubs and all other external USB devices from this Mac, reboot, connect one of the thumb drives directly to the Mac, and try again.
Everything re-connected except for the thumb drives.  External hard drive and Blu-ray drives popped right up but no USB flash drives.
Try a different and newly-created login, and see if the flash drives work there.
I used the Guest login and the same thing, everything works except the Thumb drives.
To check the local OS X installation, see if booting this Mac from the recovery partition (if one is present)
    None is present.
or booted from another (external) OS X disk allows access to the thumb drives.
I have en extern HD that is blank, but I do not know how to install Mavericks on it then run it.
Is there anything in common among these failing USB disks?  Same brand and model?  Or a mixture of different thumb drives?
They are all FAT32, other than that no I have Cruzer, Kingston and PNY brands.  2GB 4GB and 16GB.
Are the OS X systems involved both similar configurations, or are they very different versions?
Mac Mini is Mountain Lion and has no issues with the thumb drive.
Intel iMac is Mavericks and my Mac Book Pro is Mavericks.  Neither one of them can mount my USB sticks.
Thanks for your complete reply, you had some items that I did not try but unfortunately it did not help yet.

  • I need a way to get usb thumb-drive securely recognized as a apple keyboard

I posted this question over at Developer Discussions also, just to get more eyes on it, not to be disruptive.
So, I would like to utilize a maximum-length Admin. password (255 characters?) without having to manually type it in each time I login, install/update software, or for any other reason. The perfect situation would be some type of script or software installation onto a USB pen drive (2 gig sony)which is inserted into the macbook (via usb) when the Leopard Login screen appears. It logs me in, then, afterwards, it creates a clickable icon on the desktop that achieves the same goal (entering a long admin password securely). And all of the above is achieved using the built-in security of Keychain access, without having to continuously mount and unmount the drive.
Searching google produces many expensive products that do not fit: Securikey, omnikey, smart cards, tokends, and on and on. They seem to have figured this out at microsoft - not that it matters much, except that it appears to be possible.
One problem is that a USB thumb drive is not mounted until after login, it seems, but, I plugged in a friend's usb apple keyboard from the year 2000 and was able to type in my password at login. And, an email reply elsewhere suggested writing a daemon (that constantly runs in the background of the operating system) that could recognize the drive and accept a script from it that inputs the password and executes the 'enter' command.
I don't know how to write daemons yet, but I can stumble around a bit with bash and applescripts, and I can copy any Xcode project out of a book and make it run properly. I'm a beginner.
This project might create security issues for my operating system, but I'm really not concerned about that because this is a computer I don't rely on and can safely perform experiments on. And I would like to use this as an opportunity to learn - so I'm going to give it a whirl anyway - unless someone has already accomplished something similar. In that case, why reinvent the wheel and plug it into the wall, eh?
Basically I am asking for help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need to get deep into programming to do much of this.
launchd, the background process that's responsible for launching most of the background processes on your machine, has the ability to launch a script based on disk mount events.
    StartOnMount <boolean>
This optional key causes the job to be started every time a filesystem is
    mounted.
So you could create a LaunchDaemon script that watches for a disk mount. When a disk is inserted your script is fired off. You'd need to perform some verification to ensure the disk is, indeed, your USB stick and not some other device, then it can trigger the rest of the login process. Off hand I'd look to osascript to run an AppleScript-based keystroke, but there may be other ways, too.
One big question relates to securing your password. Clearly you can't store it in the script, so you'd have to read it from somewhere. You also can't store it on the USB stick unless you somehow encrypt it (otherwise someone can just look at the files on the USB stick and get your password), but AppleScript can use the keychain, too, although I'm not sure what keys would be available prior to login, so it requires some experimentation.

  • Create a startup disk on a thumb drive

Trying to create a startup disk on a thumb drive to diagnose my wife's hard drive which I think is failing (another problem I won't go into here). We are on the road and the only thumb drive I have is 4 gb. But when I try to create a startup disk for it using the Mac OS X operating CD, it says it's not big enough. But I'm guessing it wants to install all of OS X and I just want to install the essential files necessary for a startup disk which I'm assuming would easily fit on my thumb drive.
Is this doable? If so how? Or is there a way to do this using Disk Utility? I tried that, but couldn't figure out how. Also, we have an iPod that has plenty of space, but from what I can tell, I would have to erase it and we can't do that.
Bottom line: is there any way we can create a startup drive from an iPod that we don't want to erase or a 4gb thumb drive? thanks.

    Jolly Giant -
Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, neither seem to solve my issue assuming I'm looking at it right.
I ran across the first link previously and gave it a try. In step 9 it says to select the volume (the USB Drive) and continue the OS X installation. Unfortunately, when I select the USB thumb drive volume, it says it can't install because the volume (USB thumb drive) is not big enough. Mine is 4gb. That's my real issue. I need to install just the OS X files that are necessary to boot a Mac from a USB drive, but all the instructions I've run across apparently are designed to only install a full version of OS X and my 4 gb drive is too small for that.
Your second link, which is also a link from the first link, apparently explains how to do this installation on a smaller thumb drive like mine. But when I click on the link, it comes up as a dead link for me.
