Thumbnail Icons in list and Column View

I am trying to find out how to change icons for media files (pics/movies) from generic file type icons to thumbnail previews of the file. I Know its possibel because one of my folders (photos/iphoto/origionals.....)shows up in the column and list view as thumbnails. NONE of my other folders do though. I have tried messing with the view options, and i know you can view thumbnails in the ICON view in finder but this is not what i want to do. I also know that in column view you can preview files in an extra column, also not what i want. So anyone know how to make all icons in all finder views into thumbnails?
Thanks

The "icons" you are seeing are QuickLook icons that show a preview of the content in the file. AFAIK, there is no way to disable it. However, you can go into Finder>Preferences>Advanced and enabled the Show all file extensions option to help distinguish between filetypes.

  • Change view order of characteristics in list and details view

    Hello everybody
    I made some changes in the view order of most standard and own characteristics. Unfortunately the characteristic position changes I made are only partly applied!
    Example:
    Position   Characteristic              real pos. in list view
    1          /CCM/PRODUCT_ID             2
    2          /CCM/SHORT_DESCRIPTION      1
    3          /CCM/ORDER_UNIT             3
    4          ZZUMREF_AUSME_MEINS         8
    5          /CCM/BASE_UOM               4
    6          /CCM/PRICE                  6
    7          /CCM/PRICE_BASIS_QUANTITY   7
    8          ZZNFMAT_KZ                  not shown!
    9          ZZNON_AML_AM                5
    10         ZZLIM                       not shown!
    Why characteristics are not shown as a column in the list view is clear to me. This is the case when no catalog items have a value in those characteristics.
    Did anyone else out there observe similar behaviour and hopefully knows the solution to it?
    Kind regards,
    Renaud

    Just for the records...
    The system obeys to a changed character view order of own defined characteristics only if your own defined characteristics are not specified on catalog but on schema level!
    We had specified our own defined characteristics on both levels at the same time... this disturbed the system and was the reason for the disorder in list and details view.
    After correcting it all is fine again.
    Hope this helps someone in future.
    Kind regards,
    Renaud

  • Making custom icons with transparency, and Cover View mode

    I tried making a new icon for a folder, and transparency doesn't seem to be treated the same in Leopard as it was in Tiger.
    Trying to get an object to float onscreen, without a square white background, I tried pasting the following onto the folder's icon at the top of a Get Info window:
    1. one layer of a .psd file
    2. the image Saved For Web in Photoshop (as a GIF), open in Photoshop
    3. the same image saved as a .png, opened in Photoshop
    4. a Photoshop EPS with a clipping path, opened in Photoshop
    5. the GIF file opened in Preview
    6. the .png file opened in Preview
    the results:
    1. the transparency surrounding the object comes out as white
    2. a speckled, purple image with a white background
    3. the same as 2
    4. the same as 1
    5 and 6: the transparency seems to work: the icon on the
    Get Info window loses its white background and the icon floats correctly on the Desktop. But in Cover Flow viewing mode, it completely disappears.
    What am I missing? By the way, the icons for the image files, in Cover Flow, show the white background for the .psd and .png files, but not for the .gif, where the transparency shows correctly. The .gif's icon seems to show the image with a white background in List and Icon view, but only the generic GIF icon in Column view. This all seems strange to me.

    I think you probably discovered the Cover Flow Bug. See this thread and the older one referenced in it as well:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6846850
    As for the rest, well, at least you can copy something with a transparency out of Preview and paste it as an icon. Preview and Photoshop seem to me to not play well together with transparencies. I've gotten some VERY strange looking things, going back and forth between them with pngs and tiffs. Don't use gifs, or eps files, but I did notice that Finder does a rotten job coping with Photoshop's alpha channel (especially weird since once upon a time it worked fine, ditto for being able to show thumbs for eps files).

  • Movie thumbnail previews in Coverflow and Grid view...not there

    I'm using Snow Leopard and have both QT-X and QT 7 Pro on my MacBook Pro.
    In Finder, I have a folder containing several movie types including mpeg, avi, mov, qt, m4v, mp4, flv and wmv
    I've noticed that I don't see thumbnail previews for any of these movies and wondered if anybody else can see their thumbnails, either in Grid View or Coverflow
    In 3-column view, the thumbail appears once the file is highlighted.
    In iTunes, the thumbnail also appears (for those that can be added to the Library)
    I also have the latest Perian and Flip4Mac apps installed.
    I've tried re-launching Finder after deleting the com.apple.quicklook.plist file
    Thanks

    I also tried this (deleting the Quicklook cache) and no luck, still the same issue.
    I did a clean installation and this works
    However, I did again the installation and imported my USER profile in FULL via the assistant when you first configured Snow Leopard (using an FULL BACKUP copy and/or Time Machine Backup) and then problem reappears
    I have reinstalled DivX, Desinstalled RealPlayer deinstalled Perian and still the same issue. I cannot see the Thumbnails or the Cover Flow of the video/movie file such MPG, MPG, AVI, WMV but it works for MP4 I have for my IPod
    I finally gave up and left this last installation and I did not have the energy to migrate my data, emails, settngs, etc manually.
    By the way, the upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8 towards Snow Leopard 10.6 was smooth but the performance was awful specially after installing 10.6.1. With the upgrade I had the same issue with my USER account or with any, NO THUMBSNAILs for most of my videos enough though they are played correctly in Quicktime and Quicklook....
    Any help????

  • Icon Appearance Change in Column View

    I apologize if this has been answered before. I've tried to search the topic, but get so many hits that I can't go through them all. Apparently, the more words I add to the search to make it more specific, the more hits I get.
    Anyway, I use the Column View exclusively because it always shows me the folder path that I'm in. Before Leopard, the Icons in Column View clearly showed the type of file, ei PDF, Word, etc. With Leopard, the icons convey absolutely no information at all. They might as well not be there at all. If I'm searching for a particular type of file, for instance PDF, I know have to scan to the end of the file name and read the file suffix to see if it's in the file type I'm looking for. Very slow and inconvenient.
    Is there any chance that this icon appearance in Column View can be changed back to the way the icons looked in Tiger? I'm really surprised that Apple has made so many changes to the appearance and user interface in Leopard that I don't like. It seems that changes in previous new versions of OSX were always better for my taste. I'm not finding this very much in Leopard.

    Maybe I didn't make myself clear. I was seeing icons for the files, but my complaint was that they were micro versions of the document that provided no information. In Tiger they showed the type of file that it was.
    You're suggestion had me go back and look at the Comm-J dialogue box, however, and in experimenting with the other choices there, I clicked on 'Show icon preview' to deselect it and Voila!, the old Tiger icons are back! I'm a much happier camper now. I wish this behavior had been more adequately explained in the Help function. I never found any reference to it when searching for 'change icons'. In any case, all's well that end well.

  • Spotlight and column view playing together?

    Hello everyone,
    I'm not sure if I'm in the wrong forum or not, but when searching from the finder window, is there a way to show the results in Column view? This would be most helpful for searching for files such as music files that I'd like to preview upon finding.
    Thanks, in advance,
    Brian Armstrong

    Brian
    I think you'd agree that this is the whole point. Files are scattered all over your hard drive and possibly external drives as well.
    You want to see them all as an intelligible list that you can quickly run down checking them all, in each case seeing where they are in case you want to locate them.
    That is what any logical-.minded person would want, and that is how FindFile works in Panther.
    You can get a similar result in Tiger if you adopt EasyFind as your default search tool.
    Tiger is gravely handicapped, but it delights people who are more interested in how computers work, than in the work the rest of us actually DO with computers.

  • Artworks does not appear in List and Grid view, but in Cover Flow

    Since a few days the Artwork does neither appear in the List and the Grid View nor in the Genius Mix. When I change to Cover Flow, I can see all Artwork. I see all Artwork also in the information tabs. I already upgraded to the last iTunes version 9.0.2 but without any effect. Restarting iTunes and my PC doesn't help at as well.
    Does anybody have an idea what the problem is and how it can be solved?

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
    A completely blank Cover Flow can sometimes be a graphics driver problem but if Grid & List views have problems then it is probably a corrupted artwork cache. With iTunes closed rename the *Album Artwork* folder as *Album Artwork (OLD)*. Start iTunes and slowly scroll through your library in Grid mode. The cache will be rebuilt for all albums where there is embedded art. Albums that only had iTunes Store art will need to have new artwork downloaded. If all goes well delete the old artwork folder.
    *How to find tracks without artwork*
    To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them you can try http://www.stum.de/itunes-find-tracks-without-artwork/ for Windows or http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=trackswithoutartwork for Macs. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus.

  • Add a list and column to about 200 sites using powershell in SharePoint online

    I have a sitecollection with about 200 identical sites. However I need to add a new list to each site and a lookup column (referring to this list) to two other lists. I'm not a developer so I struggle a bit. I found this as a starting point:
    [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.SharePoint.Client") | Out-Null
    [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Runtime") | Out-Null
    $WebUrl = 'https://yourtenant.sharepoint.com/sites/somesite'
    $EmailAddress = "[email protected]"
    $Context = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ClientContext($WebUrl)
    $Credentials = Get-Credential -UserName $EmailAddress -Message "Please enter your Office 365 Password"
    $Context.Credentials = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.SharePointOnlineCredentials($EmailAddress,$Credentials.Password)
    $List = $Context.Web.Lists.GetByTitle("YourList")
    $FieldXml = "<Field Type='Text' DisplayName='New_Field_Display_Name' />"
    $Option=[Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.AddFieldOptions]::AddFieldToDefaultView
    $List.Fields.AddFieldAsXml($fieldxml,$true,$option)
    $Context.Load($list)
    $Context.ExecuteQuery()
    $Context.Dispose()
    Can someone help me out or is there a better solution?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to add a list and a lookup column in about 200 identical sites.
    Per my knowledge, there is no out of the box way to achieve it in SharePoint Server, however, I’m not sure whether it is in SharePoint online.
    As this is the forum for SharePoint Server, you can post your question in the forum for SharePoint online.
    http://community.office365.com/en-us/forums/154.aspx.
    However, as you had known, we can achieve it programmatically.
    Besides the PowerShell command, we can also use the Client Object Model to achieve your scenario.
    If all the 200 sites in one site collection, we can first retrieve all the sites in the site collection, then add the list in every site.
    To retrieve all the sites in a site collection, you can refer to the following code snippets.
    static string mainpath = "SiteURL";
    static void Main(string[] args)
    getSubWebs(mainpath);
    Console.Read();
    public static void getSubWebs(string path)
    try
    ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext( path );
    Web oWebsite = clientContext.Web;
    clientContext.Load(oWebsite, website => website.Webs, website => website.Title);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    foreach (Web orWebsite in oWebsite.Webs)
    string newpath = mainpath + orWebsite.ServerRelativeUrl;
    getSubWebs(newpath);
    Console.WriteLine(newpath + "\n" + orWebsite.Title );
    catch (Exception ex)
    http://chennaisharepointtraining.blogspot.in/2011/11/get-all-subwebs-using-client-object.html
    To create a list, you can have a look at the following article.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/fp179912(v=office.15).aspx
    Thanks,

  • Check flat file column list and column types

    Hi guys!
    Is there any "easy" way to check if the source flat file column names and column types correspond to target datastore column name and types ?
    Regards,
    PsmakR

    Hi,
    There is a way that I already used some time to validate if the data is the one expected into target.
    Conditions:
    1) The file source must have all columns as "String"
    2) All mapping for the analysed columns must be done at "staging area"
    How I do it: (oracle way)
    1) create a database function (by ODI procedure) like:
    create or replace function F$_DATATYPE (pData in varchar2, pDatatype in varchar2, pFormat in varchar2)
    return varchar2 as
    vDate date;
    vNumber number;
    BEGIN
    if pDatatype = 'D' then /* Date */
    vDate := to_date(pData, pFormat);
    elsif pDatatype = 'N' then /* Number */
    if pFormat is null then
    vNumber := to_number(pData);
    else
    vNumber := to_number(pData, pFormat);
    end if;
    end if;
    return 'OK';
    EXCEPTION
    When OTHERS then
    return 'KO';
    end F$_DATATYPE ;
    3) Now you can create a constraint to each source column that you wish to validate data like:
    'OK' = F$_DATATYPE(my_source_column, 'D', 'ddmmyyyy hh24:mi:ss' ) /* to a date column as example */
    4) drag and drop the source datasource (table from model) into package and a E$ table with all errors will be created.
    Does it help you?

  • Calendar List and Day View

    iCal in my iPad is actually more workable and readable than on my 27inch Mac now - ha ha - how crazy is that !!!
    iPad has word wrapping in Day view so I can see all the details (in the Mac / Lion there is no wrapping grrrrr)
    iPad I can touch an appointment in the calendar and get all the details pop up - in Mac/Lion all my calendars overlap and cover each other and even when I click an event it is still unreadable...
    In Day view I cant see my calendar list until I click on the button to open the list of calendars - then I cant see my list of events.
    We should be able to CHOOSE what we want to see.
    In Day view - with the List on the left - I cant see all details of my events. With all the calendars open, they all overlap each other on the right and I cant see all the details there either - EVEN if I click the event, its still unable to be read.
    If the LIST on the left had Wrapping, it would be awesome, so I could read all the details of my events in the list.
    As soon as anyone knows how to sort any of these issues out, I will be MOST happy.
    I wish I could go back to the old version of iCal which was perfect for me - this one makes life SOOOOO difficult. I have worked with it for 3 days and the limitations - I always used my iPad, iPhone and iMac - but the Mac calendar is now useless to me and I am having to use the iPad solely till it gets sorted out.....hopefully asap...?

    It looks like I have found a solution - it is to do with the birthday dates - if you delete the year of any pre-1932 birthdays it solves the problem!

  • Splitting the message list and Mail view - vertically

    Returning from the dark side of PC land. Getting used to Mac Mail. How can I organise the view such that my inbox list of mail is on the LHS of the screen and the selected mail displayed on the RHS. when viewed on the widescreen this seems the obvious configuration....
    Don't make me hanker for Outlook.

    Unfortunately, since Lion, this is not possible in the weay you desire. I have tried, and searched the forums to no avail. I'm sure many have called in and submitted feedback about this issue, but 3 Lion updates later, and the new Mountain Lion OS, have not changed this behavior in Apple Mail.
    If you change the font and/or font size, you will not see any change in the new Lion layout. Within the message you are viewing, changing the size of the message font, only makes changes to the "To/From" portion of the header, and not the message itself. Please understand this is if you have Apple Mail set to be viewed in the default Lion layout. If you open Preferences>Viewing, and check "Use classic layout", then you can see all changes to it. Still, it will affect both viewing and composing. There does not seem to be a way to isolate them.

  • JFileChooser detecting switch between "List" and "Details" views

    I'm customizing a JFileChooser and would like to provide users a longer version of the file names when in Details mode (Unix showing links).
    This might be accomplished using the getDescription method of FileView, I don't know. My FileView getTypeDescription and getDescription methods are never called but getIcon is. I added @Override annotations to all method, so I think I really am overriding them.
    Thanks!

    Here's a solution. I still think there should be a more official way of doing this.
    public MyFileView(JFileChooser chooser)
              for ( Component c : chooser.getComponents())
                   if (c.getClass() == FilePane.class)
                        filePane = (FilePane) c;
         @Override
         public String getName(File f)
              if (filePane.getViewType() == FilePane.VIEWTYPE_DETAILS){
                   return "Long";
              return null;

  • Can't tab into file list when using column view in the open/save dialogue boxes

    Hi,
    When in Open/Save Dialog Boxes I can't use tab to select the file/folder list in Column View. Tab will only cycle through Save As, Tags, Search, and the Sidebar. In all the other views (Icon, List, Cover) I can tab into the file list. Is this a bug?
    I know that enabling Full Keyboard Access will make this work, but I'd rather not do that since it increases the number of buttons you must tab through to get to the file list.
    I'm using the latest version of Yosemite on a 2014 Macbook Air. Thanks.

    Hi,
    Did you found the solution to this? I'm also trying to do something like you , but I got stuck up in a very primitive stage than you. I'm not getting how I can make that File Download window to appear. Can you help me please.

  • Finder: Changing from thumbnail view to column view takes me back to the root folder.

    Hi,
    I was hoping someone could help me with this as it's getting a bit tedious having to re-navigate back to the folder I was in. This problem is only occuring when I am working from an external NAS Drive.
    I need to switch between thumbnail view and column view regularly, but whenever I change from thumnails to column - finder jumps back to the root folder, meaning I have to work my way back to where I was.
    I can't figure out how to stop this happening! It doesn't happen when changing from column to thumbnails, only the other way round..
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Sarah.

    Hi Barney,
    Thanks for your reply Unfortunately though I already use AFP on the NAS drive and still have the problem, so it seems this is an issue with both AFP and CIFS..
