Thumbnail inconsistencies

Hi,
So, I'm still kinda new-ish to the whole Mac thing, and I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting some images' thumbnails appearing as the actual image itself, while others just as a generic thumbnail.
Right now, for instance, I've got two jpg's on my desktop, side by side, one showing the picture on the tumbnail and one not. I'm probably just missing something that's really simple, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Apple has always had a dual fork file system--every file can have both a data fork and a resource fork. The Mac OS can read things that are stored in the resource fork, such as a custom icon, the kind of file it is, what program created it, and many other things as well (that's why Macs didn't need the three letter extension in file names in order to correctly open a file). Many graphics programs will create a custom thumbnail which is stored in the resource fork and autmatically displayed by the Finder, whether you have the View option set to show icon preview or not. Additionally, the Finder will draw an icon for graphics files that do not have a custom thumb in the resource fork, using the information in the data fork, if you do enable the "show icon preview" option in View->Show View Options. This process, especially for a folder full of large files, is considerably slower, so most graphics pros set their programs to create a custom thumbnail. Then the Finder just has to display what is already there.
Resource forks are stripped off by Internet servers--so if you have a jpeg with a custom thumbnail and upload it to your web site, then a user comes along and downloads the jpeg to their desktop, it will show a generic jpeg icon, unless they have enabled the view option to have the Finder draw an icon. If the pix are in a zip file, which is downloaded and unzipped, the resource fork will be preserved and the thumb will show regardless of the view option setting. Unless you understand what is going on it can all be VERY confusing!

  • How is the best way to restore Thumbnails?

    I'm an experienced Mac user and have used iPhoto since it began. I have carefully arranged my iPhoto collection over the years so it has always served me well. I am currently running iPhoto 11.
    Yesterday, out of the blue, when I started iPhoto I received a notice that there were "inconsistencies" in my iPhoto collection and I should hit the button to fix them now. I did. After quite a few minutes that was done, and then I was asked to authorize updating my Thumbnails. Again I said OK. That took about a half hour. When complete I found all of my events had been rearranged, but were at least visible.
    I decided the quickest way to fix that was to go back to an earlier iPhotos file (in Pictures folder) on my Time Machine. I restored that and used it. My arrangement was OK, but many of my thumbnails were now missing. Their dotted line locations and titles were present, but not the thumbnail photo. After trying over and over again I could not restore all of those thumbnails (perhaps 33% of them). I used the "rebuilding thumbnails" and "rebuilding the database" techniques which are part of iPhoto, but neither worked at all.
    What to do? I read on this site that someone else had made his thumbnails return by manipulating each each one in some way (he rotated his). I tried that, closed iPhoto, and then reopened it and Voilá! the thumbnail had returned. The problem is I have many hundreds like that, and manipulating each one is extremely tedious. I've done quite a lot of those now, but wonder if someone knows of a better way?
    Any suggestions about how to restore all of my thumbnails without one-by-one manipulating?

    make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the fix below:
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    If neither of the options above are successful try option #2. It often requires a 2-3 passes to get all of them.

  • Can't use iPhoto/updating thumbnails/original can't be found

    I haven't used iPhoto in a long time, and have rarely ever used it, have always found it counterintuitive and unnecessarily difficult.  The last time i used it was probably in the past 6 months and it worked OK.  Today i'm having a new problem that i can't fix, hoping someone more knowledgeable can help me.
    I opened iPhoto because i was going to try using iCloud for storing photos. The "beta" iCloud Photos opened and said that i would have to turn on Photo Library on my iPhone. I looked at that and it said "automatically upload and store your entire photo library in iCloud to access photos and videos from all your devices."
    I'm not sure i want to do that, i don't want all my storage used up.  I googled "Can i store selected photos on iCloud photos," to see if i can choose which photos in my photo library i want to put on the cloud.  I got a link to an Apple Support page which was titled My Photo Stream FAQ.  I was reading the beginning of it and it said i needed to have iPhoto v.9.2 or greater.  So, i clicked on the iPhoto icon in the doc to open it and see the version number that way.
    That was the beginning of the trouble.
    I can't remember the whole sequence of what happened, but at the beginning, i got a message window telling me that there were problems with my data directory, it didn't use those terms but something about inconsistencies between different things which it said  could cause problems, and one of the options was a button that said Repair.  So i clicked on Repair.
    Then i got a small window with a progress bar that said Updating Thumbnails.  Pretty soon after that, i got another window, a message window that said something like "Alert  -  The photo “IMG_9673.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."  The two options were Cancel or Find Photo.  I clicked on Find Photo, a window opened with a field to type the name of the photo but iPhoto had taken the window away that had the file name, so i had to close out and wait for the window to come back. Then i memorized the obscure file name and put it in the search field after clicking Find Photo. Nothing happened. Nothing was found or not found, there was no response and no button to click on.  there was no way to use that window to search with.  There was a grayed out "open" button.  What a waste of time.  This is why i don't use iPhoto.
    So, then i used the Finder Find file window and typed in IMG_  because there were a lot of them, not just a few, so i wanted to find out where they all were and maybe i could just delete them. Find file showed that a lot of them were in Mail, apparently mail attachments, and there was a total of over 4700 of them.  So, there was no way i was going to be able to click Cancel 4700+ times, this was a very slow process, each time, there was an extended pause until the next window with 'cancel' came up, and of course, it would be too easy to have an option to apply the choice to all.  That didn't exist. I couldn't do anything functional with iPhoto, everything was grayed out, including Quit. I used force quit.
    i tried restarting iPhoto, the same thing happens, i got the same 'updating thumbnails' and 'Alert - original cannot be found'.  One time, i got the original  "you have inconsistencies" message and the options to repair or or cancel, and i chose cancel this time, but it still brought up the Updating Thumbnails/Alert - can't be found' windows.
    Each time, i force quit.
    Is there anything i can do?  i don't want to reinstall the whole system.  Is there something somewhere i can throw in the trash?  I do not want to have to reinstall the system software for a program i rarely if ever use because i find it so difficult.

    Terence--thank you for the reply.  To my knowledge i haven't ever done anything with iPhoto preferences to change it from the default. i have very rarely used iPhoto because i have found the interface difficult and awkward.  Because i use it so little, i would've had no reason to change the preferences that i can remember. i certainly would not have known anything about the options you describe and would not have selected a Referenced Library because i don't know where else i would put the photos. I have been managing my photos on the iPhone for the past 5 or 6 years, and before that, i used a Canon photo management program. i mostly store my photos on the phone but i email photos to my computer in order to post them on facebook etc, before that became easier to do from the phone . i would edit photos in Preview or on the phone. I have barely used iPhoto. i think occasionally, i sync the phone photos with the computer as a back up.  That would account for there being a lot of photos in the iPhoto Library, maybe.  As far as i know, i have the default settings on iPhoto.
    I used iPhoto a couple of times in the past year, to find some old photos, and the program opened normally.  Today, it did not open normally but gave me the message about having some inconsistencies and asking if i wanted to repair them, which then led to the Updating Thumbnails window, which then led to the Alert - The photo could not be opened because the original could not be found message window.  Nothing else opens.  There is no functional  iPhoto at this point. I can either open it and look at a screen with those messages on it, or i can force quit it.  I can't check the preferences settings, not from within the program.
    I searched for the IMG_ files and found about 3000 of them and put them in a photo on my desk top.  Does that mean they are in a Referenced Library?
    Do you know of any way of getting this 'updating thumbnails' process to stop?
    There was a time when dragging a plist file to the desk top or the trash could help to fix problems, and i was hoping there would be something like that  i could do. i don't know what changed since the last time i opened iPhoto that has caused this problem that i have not had before.  Maybe it was after the change from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  I can't remember.

  • IPhoto '11 Edits are lost while thumbnails still shows the edited version

    Hi,
    I'm using iPhoto '11 v9.4.3 ( Build 720.91) on Mac OS X v10.8.5 and have my iPhoto Library on a external HDD. One month back, I had moved to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5 but then reverted back to Mountain Lion and iPhoto v9.4.3 ( with the help of iPhoto Library Manager v4.0.9 ) due to performance issues on my iMac. Ever since I have been having some inconsistencies in my iPhoto Library, specifically w.r.t. the edits.
    iPhoto does seem to retain my edits after a while. Though the thumbnail view ( or browse mode ) shows the edited version of the file, however double-clicking the file opens up the original unmodified version ( in the edit or single photo view mode ).
    Browse Mode - below
    Single Photo View Mode - below
    For the first time, the problem seemed to get resolved for a while, if I do a Repair Permissions on the iPhoto Library ( by pressing Option + Command ). However, now even that has no effect. Even after reparing permissions, Everytime I use the "Repair Permissions" option, I see the iPhoto message "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto Library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?". Also, The File ->Reveal in Finder menu shows that the "Modified File" option is greyed out.
    I have tried the following so far ..
    1. Repair Permissions using iPhoto : Used to solve the issue earlier, but no effect now.
    2. Repair Library using iPhoto : No joy
    3. Manualy changed the permissions for the iPhoto Library & its contents using Terminal command ( sudo chmod -R 777 * ) : No joy
    This had happened 2 weeks earlier too, and was only resolved by deleting the whole Event and re-importing the files as a new event and then editing the files which has stuck so far without any issues.
    Any suggestions ??
    Regards,
    RP.

    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • No thumbnails in vault???

    This morning the hard drive containing my main library called it quits. Not a fun predicament, but of course I had everything backed up including my library using a vault on another volume. So I restored from the vault. Got two messages stating that there were inconsistencies in the database. Rebuilt the database. Same thing.
    But on top of that, it appears that none of the thumbnails were part of the vault backup. They now all need to be rebuilt. Not a big deal for online images - just time. But my entire offline archive is now without thumbnails! is this normal?
    I relied on the vault to allow me to be up and running quickly after a full restore. I relied on it being an exact copy of my library. I'm now facing hours of work to get back to my initial state. Somehow this fails to live up to the promise. Am I missing something?

    Jade -
    this is totally normal behavior ... thumbnails and previews are not stored in a vault backup ... i can only presume that this is for a few reasons ...
    1 - space ... this saves space that could possibly be used for other, more valuable things, now this is subjective though ...
    2 - recoverability ... thumbs and previews are "easily" regenerated ... your main images are critical, while small thumbs and previews not so much ...
    3- time ... yes it adds time after recovery but initial save to vault and subsequent backups would be longer if it included thumbs and previews ...
    that is what i can think of for reasoning, but it would be nice to give us a choice on whether we include or exclude them ...
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
    i feel your pain/frustration as i once did a restore of 75K+ images and waited overnight for the thumbs to come back ... but again, i did not lose a single image ...

  • Inconsistency between display of icon & thumbnail picture next to file name

    Does anyone know why there would be inconsistencies in the images at the (left) side of the file names when viewing in Finder?
    I have a list of AVI files, some of which are displaying thumbnail pictures (which is what I want), and yet others display only an icon image (the little strip of film icon).
    It doesn't matter whether I use 'columns', 'list' or 'icons' view the result is the same. I've tried going to "Show View Options", but adjusting the settings makes no difference.
    If I want to see a preview of what the file contains I have to make sure the 'View' is selected to 'Columns' so that Preview will pop up in the next column to the right - this is time consuming and frustrating considering that other files that are comparatively the same are showing a convenient little thumbnail picture which saves me from having to click on them.
    I've rung Apple about this and the person I spoke to agreed that this "inconsistency" does happen, but could not help me.
    Hope someone here can advise me how to make all the files appear with thumbnail pictures.
    Cheers,
    Lehla

    Hi jsd2,
    Thanks for that suggestion of CocoThumbX. I downloaded it and it did create a thumbnail picture, however when viewing it in 'Columns' view, the large area of 'border' around the image (in the form of a black film strip) means the image is scaled down so much that it is difficult to see what it is and I generally still have to click on it to force Preview to open in the next column to allow me to see which clip it is. I know I could use 'Icons' view, but I'm also converting some files to MPEG4 using iSquint, and when the 'Add' window opens in iSquint to allow me to select the file/s I want to convert I have the problem of the tiny images not being quite big enough for me to decipher what they are. The original thumbnail pictures (when it decides it will display a thumbnail picture!) are only marginally bigger but it is still better.
    I've tried to get rid of the black border in the CocoThumbX thumbnails in the hope that the image can then fill the entire allocated space, but cannot find a way. Do you know if it can be removed, or possibly of another utility that has no border?
    I would appreciate your further advice, thanks.
    Cheers,
    Lehla

  • IPhoto Photo Syncing Inconsistencies

    I just got my iPhone and I've been playing around with syncing photos from iPhoto. My iPhoto library has about 7000 photos ranging in all sizes. I have found some issues with iPhoto syncing. I'm selecting albums, syncing them and noting the results on the iPhone.
    I have several web gallery albums. When I select one of them and sync there are two albums in the iPhone. One is Photo Library and the other is the album. They both have the same photos. I read on these forums that iTunes will send an aggregate album down that has all the photos of all albums downloaded. Makes sense but if there are inconsistencies;
    If I sync one web gallery album a corresponding Photo Library is created. Duplicate photos of the web gallery album but if I chose one regular album to sync then the Photo Library is not created. i
    If I select two regular albums then I get the Photo Library which is the aggregate of both albums. This makes sense
    I'm also see thumbnail issues on the album page. I have wrong photos allocated to an album. The photo existed from a previous album and is not a photo of the current album.
    Sometimes an album thumbnail is not showing adjacent the album name after the sync.
    I'm a little disappointed in this basic functionality not working.
    I'll try rebuilding my iPhoto database.
    Anyone else seeing issues like this?

    It appears what is happening to me is the thumbnail sometimes not built right after the sync. I have to navigate away from the Photo area and then come back and then the thumbnail is showing up and is a thumbnail of the first photo.

  • In Photoshop Express, cannot sort images in album by filename in thumbnail view (for slideshow)l.

    In Photoshop Express, I want images to appear sorted by filename.  In the "view as a table" it sorts fine.  When I revert to the thumbnail view, the arrangement is random.  The dropdown "show" list does not offer an option for showing by filename.  If I select the"custom" option, it means I would need to sort 300 images by filename MANUALLY (!!!), a job that a computer does in milliseconds.  Anyone with a solution?  Thanks.

    fwiw, with my images in the 'Folder Location' view the photos are in order by their Windows filename. That is the same order as the hardcopy album the photos came from. So I then created a PSE Album. I selected all my photos and moved them into that album. The order of the pictures was retained in the Album. That worked out great. I wanted my PSE images to be in the same order. I thought I would do it with tags. But creating an album seems to work just fine.

  • How do I move page order in Thumbnails view in the new pages? (which is driving me nuts btw)

    I'm really struggling with the new pages, having used the old version so much I just can't get the hang of this one - so much has changed:( Really wish I hadn't bothered but now have too many documents created in it that I can't open on old version as it doesn't let you (mump mump - well I am scottish).
    So in the old version I used thumbnail view to move about the order of the pages (really useful when making up artwork for magazines etc). Anyone know how to do it on the new version?
    Also can't seem to view document in '2 up' - 2 pages side by side (also very handy for magazines etc).
    Also the tables facility doesn't let you move borders of individual cells - you can only move the whole column - I can't even select them.
    I could go on but will go before I start the 'pages shake'.

    Hilary,
    Scottish or not, your best option is to retreat to the last good version of the app, Pages '09.
    Cut your losses.

  • How can I access the thumbnail/preview image of a PSD file?

    Hey guys I'm trying to salvage some work from a corrupted PSD file via the thumbnail. What happened was I saved my work and closed photoshop and hit the reset button on my PC afterwards by mistake (i dont see why this caused a problem because the program was fully closed at the time). When I open the file now it says it uses an unsupported blending mode, if i press ok I get an error saying incompatible PS version, if I press flatten it says unexpected end of file was encountered. Ive tried PSD repair tools and searched the net for solutions and there doesnt seem to be any - Ive pretty much given up on trying to repair the original file.
    The thing is, the thumbnail of the file seems to be intact because I can still see it as the file icon. I wanted to know if there was any way i can access this thumbnail image so i can enlarge it. Any help would be very appreciated!!

    I have an idea to try...  Earlier I mentioned the Windows Picture Viewer...  Normally that won't read PSD files, but I'm used to using that to look into PSD files because at one point I bought the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack.
    Something to try, and it won't cost anything:
    1.  Try downloading and installing the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack from here:  http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/
    2.  Once it's installed you get a free trial period, so you can try opening your PSD file by right-clicking on it and choosing Preview.
    If that fails, here's another thing to try:
    Open the Bridge component of Photoshop and navigate to the folder in which you have the file.  It may be able to make a larger thumbnail than the one you're seeing.
    Other than that, are you saying you're seeing the thumbnail in Windows Explorer?  If that's the case, what happens if you right-click in the white space near the file and choose View - Extra Large Icons?

  • In Pages 5, why are page thumbnails different sizes?

    So I'm using 5. And I must say I think it's brilliantly done after a long period of ******** about it. I guess I'm not asking of it anything it doesn't provide and what it does it does very well - though I'm puzzled by the behavior of selecting text via the keyboard.
    Anyhow, that's not my question. I'm working with a long text document. I notice that as I work the page thumbnails become different sizes. It's subtle but it's clearly intentional. I reckon it's trying to tell me something but I don't know what. Haven't been able to find any info in the manual and was wondering if any of you clever people here might know. Thanks.

    This is what I meant about how rude you are though.  Your answer DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANY OF THE BEHAVIOUR myself or the other person were reporting.  The only assumption that I can make is that you posted here for the sole purpose of implying that we are both mistaken or stupid.
    How is this helpful at all?
    How do you have 32,485 points when you are obviously more concerned with insulting people than helping them out?  It puts the lie to the whole idea of "Apple Support Communities."
    Also, I specifically informed you that your comments were insulting and unhelpful and politely requested you not post on this thread anymore or at least until you had some kind of actual information, yet here you are.  Posting again, with no content other than the implied insult.
    I'm not stupid.  I know what a section break is, I know what a page break is.  I'm a writer who has used innumerable word processing programs over the years and have been an IT worker for 10 years now.
    I have a Pages document.  It has no (or only one depending on your point of view), section(s).  It has page breaks only.  The pagination is set to start at "1" on the first page and proceed normally to the end of the document (300 or so pages).  I am using Pages 5.5.2 on a brand new iMac.  I have NONE of the previous or older versions/types of Pages on my computer.
    The pages thumbnails on the side, do actually CHANGE SIZE randomly as I am editing the document.   These differing sizes are NOT CORRELATED WITH THE BEGINNING OR ENDING OF SECTIONS.  These size changes are also NOT CORRELATED WITH THE PAGE BREAKS (in case you were about to argue the similarity of page breaks and section breaks).  As I work through the document and scroll up and down editing here or there, the size of the thumbnails RANDOMLY CHANGE SIZE.  Sometimes this is correlated with me working on a section, sometimes I can work on a section and no change happens at all.  The thumbnails that change size often change back again when I scroll back to them later on.
    So please ... Try to act like a decent human being and either help out, or go away.  STOP POSTING THAT WE ARE WRONG, when you DON'T in fact know we are wrong.  STOP INSULTING ME by assuming I am stupid.
    Why are you even here if you don't want to actually HELP anyone?
    To anyone else reading this:  I am having a real bad time with this fellow who is just the most insulting person I have met for a while, however many of my posts about him are being deleted.  If anyone knows (including the mods of this forum) of the proper way to REPORT or get rid of a troll/abuser like him on Apple Support Communities or a place to report his behaviour, please let me know.

  • Photo gallery with Thumbnail View in Flex 3

    Hello everyone
    I very urgently need an answer to a very simple qeuestoon. I have been trying really hard since days to get a solution to this simple problem but in vain.
    I am building an application in Flex 3. I simply want to create a photo gallery with a thumbnail where when the user clicks on a thumbnail, the image is shown in the canvas/tab navigator box next to it. The images are stored in a local folder (in src) are ARE NOT on available on any web link.
    The Vbox with the thumb image and the .xml file has been created. But when I click on the thumbnail, the full image cannot be seen in the application. I dont know if this is a problem with data binding or what.
    Please help!!!

    The gallery works in preview and in live view in Dreamweaver, but not when posted to the website. I did one last week which worked just fine, and nothing has been updated in either CS 5.5 or the server software.

    Try to recreate the thumbnails for that folder.

    Hi,
    If you have seperate XML file but with the same basic structure then you can change the XML a Spry dataset refers to and regenerate the spry region without reloading the full page.
    So on my photo gallery page I can change the album the photos are shown from via the seturl sprydata function as below.  dsPhotos being my Spry dataset that points to the relevant XML dataset with my image references and captions etc.  My XML is actually dynamically generated from Picasa RSS feeds (and RSS feeds are XML) but the principle will be the same with your static XML.
    First I add an event listener for when someone clicks on an album (the li tag within my div with the id "albums" holds a photo and title for each album.)
    function Albums()
    var myalbums = Spry.$$("#albums li", "TabbedPanels1")
    var rows = dsAlbums.getData();
    var setListener = function( element, value )
      Spry.Utils.addEventListener( element, "click", function(){ showAlbum( value ); },false );
    for( var i = 0, length = myalbums.length; i < length; i++ )
      setListener( myalbums[i], i );
    Then this is the code which changes the photo album to be shown. (when the user clicks the relevant album)
    function showAlbum(i)
    pauseShow();
    pImage = 'No';
    var rows = dsAlbums.getData();
    var albumid = rows[i]["albumid"];
    var url = "xml/PicasaAphotoFeed.asp?albumid=" + albumid;
    dsPhotos.setURL(url);
    dsPhotos.loadData();
    var rowcount = dsAlbums.getRowCount() - 1;
    var nextalbum;
    var navnext;
    var n;
    The page is here www.thehmc.co.uk/photo5.html is you want to see it in context.
    In your case showAlbum would switch between Frank.xml or Wolfie.xml depending on how you decide to name your xml datasets.
    Regards
    Phil
