Thumbnail is blank

After updating my thumbnail caches all of a sudden iPhoto no longer shows the thumbnail pictures. It does open the photo though.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 - download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
2 - if the above does not work the launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the options to rebuild the thumbnails, both options.
If neither help post back and we'll go from there. Good luck.

After importing photos from a digital camera the thumbnails are blank.

I purchased a new iMac a few months ago and had no problem with transferring (and viewing) my iPhoto library onto the new computer. However, now when I import photos from my iPhone or camera, the thumbnails are blanks (with little dotted lines around them). In order to view the picture I must double-click on the image. This makes it a difficult to locate photos! Help me please.

No, the new iPods do not have a camera adaptor able to do this. Why Apple have decided not to make a suitable adaptor available (the old one won't work with the Classic), I have no idea.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

Movie thumbnails are blank on webpage but play okay

I am using iWeb 08 and am very pleased except for one thing. My movie thumbnails are blank. They have a little icon in the corner and they play okay but there is no picture (except on one of them)

Thanks! I realized the thumbnail was black because almost all of my movies started with a black screen. Your suggestion was perfect!!
One thing though, it seems like the movies load slower now. Could that have had any effect or am I just imagining it?

Thumbnails went blank

The thumbnails of my imported video clips turned to blank boxes after I was told to rebuild my thumbnail cache. How do I retrieve the video? Also some of my in tact thumbnails of videos won't play when double clicked. Any help?

Right click on any of the affected files. Select 'Show File'. A Finder window should open with the File Selected. Does it?

Iphoto thumbnails open blank with second user

We have a two user macbook pro. When we load new photos onto iphoto on one 'side' the photos load fine and can be seen by that user. When we switch sides to the other user the thumbnails are there but they open blank. This seems to be a new problem. The thumbnails always open fine with the user that loads the photos, but not with the other user.
Both users are using the same iphoto library.
Any ideas, do I have a setting wrong somewhere ????

I have found by right clicking on the photos the problem is permissions. If I rebuild as you say I think it will temporarily fix the problem as I have done this before and it does. As it starts to rebuild it asks to fix the permissions and voila its fixed though it does go through the process. My problem is that I need to rebuild every time I upload photos.
When one user uploads the photos it seems to create a folder in the iphoto library but the permissions within that particular date folder are allocated to that user rather than all users. I have the library in the shared user account and the permissions I have set for the iphoto library as everyone read write access. How do I get it to upload and give permission to all users when it does. Is there a setting somewhere?

New tab page thumbnails are blank - always blank

I've updated to FF 13.0 (Linux) and was keen to have a look at the Opera-like tthumbnails when opening a new page from the tab bar.
I open the page that should have small renderings of recently visited sites and I'm presented with empty squares with text labels to indicate what page they link to.
I've tried the "'''click on the blank square and wait for the page to completely load'''' solution but that doesn't work.
What should I try next?

I was having this issue too. Changing my privacy settings allowed the thumbnails to appear.
# Go to Edit > Preferences > Privacy.
# Under Privacy there's a checkbox for Clear history when Firefox closes and to the right a Settings button.
# Click the Settings button and uncheck Browsing History and Cache.
# Restart FF.
# The thumbnails appear after you revisit sites.
The text "Clear history when Firefox closes" seems misleading, since it is affecting behavior ''before'' FF closes. I guess these setting aren't just for clearing history but ''writing'' history too. Is that a bug? I'm on Ubuntu with FF 13.0.1.

I'm running Arch64 with gnome desktop environment
thumbnails for text file is blank.
after I remove thumbnail cache, it's still blank.
thumbnails for other files works fine.
I have ask this question in local Arch forum, search in google and this forum, but no answer.
which program create thumbnails for text file? is it ooo? or nautilus itself? or other?

i don't think theme have something to do with it.
thumbnails for text file is like this. and the file is not blank and the head of it is not empty line.

i am using Faenza icon theme.
and i have got an answer:
create files : gnome-fs-regular.png, text-x-preview.png, gtk-file.png
in icon theme's mimetye folder.(you will see folder like 48x48, scalable. )
the content of these file almost the same:

EmbeddedTextRectangle=22,28,106,118
the four numbers are left-top and right-bottom of the Rectangle, so they may be different for different size of the Rectangle.
after you do that you will see preview for text file
but however i adjust these four numbers, the preview i get is outside of the icon. and i don't know why.

File icon on thumbnail is blank

hello,
so i made the transition from PS CC to PS CC 2014, and when i uninstalled PS CC, this happened to my thumbnails:

it used to show the psd file type icon when i was browsing in the thumbnail view
(when im in icon view, the icons are not blank though, they show the PSD file type icon correctly)
tried numerous installs and uninstalls of the 2 versions of CC (both 2014, and not 2014)
and the icon wont come back (even did icon cache rebuilds, several times)
it's not the end of the world problem, but its annoying and ugly
anyone has a solution?

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
Another way of rebuilding the database is to use iPhoto Library Manager .
If none of these work, it seems likely that you have a corrupted library file. In this case you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

My thumbnail is blank and shows a broken document

I'm using PE 7.0 and something strange has begun to occur lately (I didn't have that problem in the past).
I'm trying to resize an image by selecting Image/Resize/Image size and I enter 800 X 600 pixels. Then I do Save as... by giving a new name and choosing the JPG format with a Quality 7 (medium) in the JPG Options. Then I close the image in the Editor and move to the Organizer to find that my new thumbnail is there but it is blank (not showing my photo) with a little picture in the center representing a kind of broken document. And when I click on that new blank thumbnail with the right button of my mouse and try to open it in the Editor, I get an error message saying someting like the file is incorrect.
Did someone ever have this kind of problem? I need advice and help please...

I was resizing images and was adding a period in the name without realizing that would cause me problems... I really did not understand what was going wrong. I couldn't imagine it was something that simple that I was doing wrong. You made my day, thank you so much dj_paige!

Keynote video thumbnails are blank.

I have placed video clips into my slides, but the tiles are blank. How can I get a thumbnail scene to give me a visual representation of the video I'm about to play? I've loaded the mp4 files into the library and then synced through the Photos tab in iTunes. I have inserted and sized them with the media option. They play fine, but there is no thumbnail visible on the slide, so I am shooting in the dark. Any suggestions? Thanks

Are you trying to view Silverlight or WMV content? If so, you need the appropriate internet plugin: Silverlight or something called "Flip4Mac."

Problem editing - can see thumbnail, but blank when double click on photo

I just upgraded to iLife 08 and encountered a host of problems. I had about 5000+ photos. Now I suddenly have 7000+. There are a ton of duplicates that I don't know what to do with. Moreover, I can't edit my photos. I've changed the preferences around, but nothing works. When I try to click on the thumbnail to edit the photo, a blank page appears. It looks like I can manipulate it, as when I press rotate, the thumbnail rotates. However, I cannot view anything but the thumbnail. Pls help!

Is the box gray with an ! in the middle or is it white? If it's the latter then there's a permission issue. Sodownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
If it's the former and Terence's recommendation doesn't work you may be looking at starting fresh with a new library and importing the original photos from the old library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Thumbnail is blank with a hashed border, and underlying photo is AWOL.

iPhoto appears to be doing something odd with a small number of my photos: their thumbnails are appearing with a white dashed line in a rectangle, with no image, and double-clicking on the offending items just shows a similar item (white fashed line, excalamtion mark in the middle) full screen.
I've used option/command and started iPhoto, ticking all four options, but this doesn't appear to help.
Most frustratingly, as I scroll around, it starts off with images where these thumbnails are, just for a fraction of a second!
Any bright ideas will be much appreciated!

IPhoto thumbnails are blank, but maximized photo shows up.

I had to power of my iMac while iPhoto was uploading some photographs. When I turned it back on, iPhoto prompted me to restore the library. I said yes. Now the thumbnails aren't appearing, and when you double click a photo to maximize it, it briefly shows up with the grey yeild "!" icon and then the photo shows up, but the thumbnails are still grey. Is there a fix for this?

Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails. It could take more than one pass to get the job done.
