Thumbnail view for RAW in Explorer?

This is probably a stupid question but I simply do not know and cannot find the answer. When browsing files in Windows Explorer, should I be able to see thumbnails of my RAW files?
I have ACR 4.5 installed (and it's in the right location) and can bring up and view files in ACR but it's difficult because when I chose file->open (in the Editor) all I see is the generic unknown icon, so I cannot find a specific images, which is frustrating.

Do this at your own risk, but replacing all instances of NEF by PEF; .nef by .pef and of course, Nikon by Pentax :)
(extract of a post by a Microsoft engineer)
First, an explanation:
For Windows XP SP2, Microsoft made a change in the way thumbnails are retrieved for image files.
Before Windows XP SP2, a Microsoft-supplied default thumbnail extractor was used for any file which identified in the registry as having the perceived type "image".
In Windows XP SP2, this was restricted to images with known file extensions, such as JPG, TIF, TIFF, BMP, etc.
Because NEF files are valid TIFF/EP files, this thumbnail extractor is capable of extracting the thumbnail image, but because Nikon raw files have the extension NEF, the extractor no longer has the opportunity to do so.
Following is a fix for the problem of NEF thumbnails not being visible in Windows XP SP2. But before we get there, a disclaimer:
Microsoft provides this information AS IS AND WITH ALL FAULTS, and disclaims all warranties and conditions, whether express, implied or statutory, including, but not limited to, any (if any) implied warranties, duties or conditions of merchantability, of fitness for a particular purpose, of reliability or availability, of accuracy or completeness of responses, of results, of workmanlike effort, and of lack of negligence all with regard to the information.
Now, the fix:
To restore this component's ability to extract thumbnails from NEF files, there is a simple registry change.
Under this registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nef
Create this key (note there are two levels of keys):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nef\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
And set the default (unnamed) value to:
{3F30C968-480A-4C6C-862D-EFC0897BB84B}
Explanation:
{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} is the string version of the interface ID IID_IExtractImage.
{3F30C968-480A-4C6C-862D-EFC0897BB84B} is the string version of the class ID for the GDI+ thumbnail extractor.

  • Explorer crashing when generating thumbnails view for large (4GB) video (.TS) files

I am suffering consistent application crashes in Windows Explorer when it tries to generate thumbnails.
The error is reported as COM Surrogate has stopped working with an APPCRASH of dllhost.exe in module msvcrt.dll.
This only but always happens in the following circumstances.  A folder set to view tiles or icons (with thumbnail view option NOT disabled).  This folder contains several sub-folders, each of which contain video files.  As explorer scans the
folder and its sub-folders, generating thumbnails for each, whenever it encounters a video file (.TS) that is 3.99GB or larger. COM surrogate crashes again.  Closing COM Surrogate will then allow explorer to continue to scan the remaining sub-folders
until it encounters the next large file.
If I subsequently open one of the sub-folders where it crashed trying to generate a thumbnail, and refresh the folder, it will successfully generate a thumbnail for the video file. If I then return to the main folder and change the customization of the sub-folder
from video to document and back to video, explorer then successfully generates the folder icon with the inset video thumbnail.
I have tried this in safe mode and the problem persists.
Can anybody please help as I am pulling my hair out.

    Hi Roger.
Almost all of my media files are TS, and all of my large (4GB) files are TS files, so I cannot tell if other file types have the same problem.  I did try renaming the TS files to be .mpg (they still play as mpg) but this did not help.
However, I have downloaded and used ShelleExView and this has proved very useful.  For the benefit of anyone else with a similar problem and using this very useful tool, I will detail the technique I used.
First, using ShellExView, I disabled various groups of extensions to identify which, if any, were relevant.  After disabling/enabling each set I performed a system restart to ensure the changes took effect.  This was not actually necessary as restarting
Windows Explorer (via Task Manager) works equally well (but this loses my customm Taskbar toolbar).
Also, before re-opening the folders containing the problem files, I deleted the icon cache (I could have done this manually but chose to use CCleaner's delete Thumbnail Cache option as this was quick and easy).  I then viewed the folders containing
the problem files, watching to see what effect the changes in ShellExView had made.
Using ShellExView, I progfessively disabled by Type (e.g. Thumbnail, Icon Handler), then by Company (e.g. non-Microsoft), then by Product (e.g. MS Office, Windows Search).  The result was that I identified the extension that was creating the thumbnails:
Icaros Thumbnail Provider (installed as part of the K-Lite codec pack).
Hoping I had found the cause, I removed K-Lite from my system and checked again.  No thumbnails (as expected), but COM Surrogate continued to crash (I have subsequently reinstalled K-Lite as I need this to play my media files).  Further analysys
with ShellExView then identified a further problem extension: Microsoft's MF MPEG Property Handler.
With both extensions (Icaros Thumbnail Provider & MF MPEG Property Handler) disabled, COM Surrogate does not crash.  With either one enabled, but not the other, COM Surrogate crashes.  These two extensions are therefore both individually causing
the crashes.  This leads me to wonder if they perhaps have something in common (e.g. a dll).
Although disabling these extensions stops the crashes, I of course alos lose what they provide: file details (e.g. media length etc.) and thumbnails.  So simply disabling them is not a solution.
Is it possible to idenitfy what, if anything, they have in common (which may be the true culprit)?
Alternatively, are there other ways I can continue to obtain file property information and thumnails without using these extensions?

  • Thumbnail Preview for RAW Files Not Appearing in Bridge

    Hello,
I'm running Adobe Bridge 5.1 on a Mac OS 10.9.2 (recently upgraded to Maverick) and I can no longer see thumbnail previews for my RAW files (which include .NEF, .CR2 and .RAF) though as of a few days ago this wasn't a problem. Not sure if it's related to the Maverick upgrade... but FYI, I do see thumbnail previews for .TIFF and .JPEG files.
I've already purged my cache generally and have also as a test chosen a local file to purge - that didn't work.
I've restarted Bridge at least 2x by pressing and holding the Option key.
I've also checked for Bridge updates - everything is up to date.
My Cache Options (within Preferences) are set to "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" - both checked.
Also downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.3, installed it but that didn't work.
I can't seem to find my Bridge cache folder or at least what's in the Library's "Caches" folder doesn't include anything for Bridge - see screenshot below.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

To me it seems related to your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) converter. Clue inhere is you only miss the Raw files and have no problems in seeing other formats like jpeg and tiff.
The screenshot you delivered is from the wrong library, however, this same library (the one on system level) also is the location where you should be able to view the correct version of your ACR plugin. The path: library (same as per your screenshot)/Application support/ Adobe/ Plug ins/ CS6/ File Formats. inhere should be only one version of Camera Raw (called: "Camera Raw.plugin") and this should show version 8.3 (141).
I'm not sure about your bridge version number, Bridge 5 comes with PSCS6 but my most recent version of Bridge is 5.0.2.4.
Anyway, if you have only one ACR (8.3) installed in the above mentioned path then you might want to try to delete the Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manually.
For this you have to Quit Bridge and find the user library (by default hidden, use menu Go in Finder and press option key to reveal).
Inhere find the plist file (user(your user name) / library / Preferences  and inhere find and manually delete the file called: "com.adobe.bridge5.plist"
The in same user library find Bridge Cache. User/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files, the adobe Bridge plug in cache and the folder called Cache. delete (or move outside libray) both items.
The restart Bridge (If needed also again hold option key to reset preferences) and this will create fresh files for the previous deleted items, leaving you with an almost out of the box factory set version of Bridge.

  • In Photoshop Express, cannot sort images in album by filename in thumbnail view (for slideshow)l.

In Photoshop Express, I want images to appear sorted by filename.  In the "view as a table" it sorts fine.  When I revert to the thumbnail view, the arrangement is random.  The dropdown "show" list does not offer an option for showing by filename.  If I select the"custom" option, it means I would need to sort 300 images by filename MANUALLY (!!!), a job that a computer does in milliseconds.  Anyone with a solution?  Thanks.

fwiw, with my images in the 'Folder Location' view the photos are in order by their Windows filename. That is the same order as the hardcopy album the photos came from. So I then created a PSE Album. I selected all my photos and moved them into that album. The order of the pictures was retained in the Album. That worked out great. I wanted my PSE images to be in the same order. I thought I would do it with tags. But creating an album seems to work just fine.

  • Thumbnail view for Library copied from Asset Library does not work

    Hello ,
I created list definition based on Assed Library (I copied files from \15\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\AssetLibrary\AssetLibrary ) - I reused schema.xml and other files.
Then I added my new custom content type.
The problem is following:  thumbnail view does not work now ( "/AssetLibraryDemo/Forms/Thumbnails.aspx" )
I don't have any javascript errors and any specific error in ULS log.
Can you give me advice, why thumbnail view has stopped working?

I need to use "List teplates" gallery functionality for this task.

  • Thumbnail view for ical?

i love the mimum window for itunes (it shows only what's playing and a couple buttons for control by clicking the green window control button in titlebar)... is there a way to shrink ical down to do the same kind of thing? it would be ideal to show either a day or a month view in a thumbnail window... i didn't find any info about this searching the ical discussion or the ical help...
    thanks-

I don't know whether iCal has any internal ability to perform the function you're looking for, but the Dashboard widget called iCal Events (http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/business/icalevents.html) seems to have the same type of functionality that feature would provide.

I have Photoshop Extended as part of CS4. I am trying to open RAW files from my Canon 5D Mark II for batch processing. Each time the RAW file is opened it brings up some form of viewer where I need to click OPEN Image. This prevents me from automating my actions on multiple files. Please help.

How are you batch processing the camera files?
You can use File>Scripts>Image>Processor or File>Automate>Batch
Wiith batch if you check Suppress File Open Option dialogs, then the camera raw dialog won't open.

  • Free PSD Thumbnail reviewer for win 7 explorer

    Hi,
    I have CS5 and use Win7- Ultimate-64bit.
What is the free approache to preview PSD files' thumbnails in windows explorer?
    Thanks . . .

    Google is your friend.
There seem to be plenty of options, lots of them not needing commercial extra software. Many of them are hacks with unknown effects and more for the proficient user. But obviously this issue has been solved for many users already.

  • Thumbnail view of RAW files in Finder w/o iphoto or aperture?

I would like to see photos shot with Canon 6D in finder or preview without using iphoto or aperture.  I tried to install RAWcameraup4.04 but was told iphoto or aperture is required.  Is there any plug-in or a way to work with these RAW files without buying iphoto or aperture?  Thanks!

Try the application Image Capture.  It is located in your applications folder.
If you launch iMage capture, then connect your camera, you should be able to import the data off the camera to a folder on your computer, using this applicaiton.

  • Thumbnail view missing with upgrade to CS5

Since I have upgraded to Photoshop CS5 I no longer see thumbnails in Windows Explorer (XP), just the Photoshop icon.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

The use of the word "never" is wrong.
Photoshop used to ship with a DLL that would make thumbnail views possible in Windows Explorer.  Apparently it caused system conflicts, and it never was made to work with 64 bit systems, and it's simply no longer provided by Adobe.
But take heart, there are several 3rd party companies that sell inexpensive codec packs that provide thumbnail decoders that will show you thumbnails (or even previews) for things like .psd files and raw camera files.
Here's the one I bought and like:  Fast Picture Viewer Codec Pack - http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

  • Windows thumbnail viewer

can someone please point me to a good, free thumbnail viewer for PSD files in Explorer?  I've googled and seen the pay ones, and saw one on CNET for free (but it only worked on 1/2 of the PSD's for some reason).
    Many thanks.

I seldom look for a photo file in Explorer as I use Bridge in PsCS4.  Better than Explorer, by far.  If you don't like Bridge then I suggest that you try IrfanView.  This is a standalone program and has nothing to do with Explorer.
My guess about some PSD photos not being shown is that they were not saved in compatibility mode.  Most photo browsers cannot read the layers.  However, Compatibility mode adds a flattened layer that can be read by some browsers.  This can be set under Preferences: File Handling.

  • Thumbnail View in DPS Folio Producer: Editor

    Hi,
When will the thumbnail view for PDF folios become available in the DPS Folio Producer: Editor? This feature is waiting since a very long time to be implemented.
Or switch at least the behavior so the list view opens by default. Or remove the thumbnail view.

I'll pass the suggestions along to the Folio Producer team, thanks.

  • Windows Explorer Thumbnail View and 7D Mark II RAW Files

I am running latest version of PhotoShop CC on Windows 8.1 Toshiba laptop. Prior to purchasing my Canon 7D Mark II, I could view Canon RAW files as photo thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Since upgrading cameras, I get generic thumbnails when I view a folder full of RAW files from the 7D Mark II. Is there a fix? I use Irfanview as a general file viewer and Adobe Camera RAW to open files in PhotoShop, but I seriously miss the ability to find a specific photo quickly in Windows Explorer.

    Hi billyray1usa ,
may I suggest that you try to use Bridge to view and navigate between the thumbnails with the possibility of having the large preview of each image in more than Adobe Bridge updates with PS and Camera Raw.
