Thumbnails Blank When Importing Greyscale TIFFs

If I select File -> Import -> Images, and then select a directory of TIFF files that do not contain color information the thumbnails only show the image orientation, but are otherwise greyed out. Color TIFFs display normally.
These are scanned in Black and White 35mm negatives from my Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED, scanned as greyscale and saved as TIFFs of about 45mb in size.
Is this a known problem?

i don't know why but the Nikon file formats from their film scanners can be problematic

  • Lr5.3 - No thumbnails previews when importing DNG's from Pentax K-3

    Hi all,
It worked when I first updated Lr to latest version (5,3) but for some reason it's not showing thumbnails anymore when importing pictures from SDCard.
I tried re installing with no success.
I dont know where to look for, I am under MAC OS Lion - 10.7 -
    Best wishes for Christmas,
    DimC

    Suzanne,
    Thanks for your quick reply.
It doesnt show up in the import dialog screen, that's my issue exactly.
When I click on import, the import screen opens and I dont see any thumbnails for the pictures, only the generic DNG thumbnail.
When i import pics from either my K-5 or K20D there is the thumbnails available and I can then choose which pics to import.
It's not about thumbnails when the pictures are imported and availble in the library but to answer your question, the images on my SDCard are on the DCIM folder, same as when it was working fine.

EDIT : I did a mistake by clicking on "CORRECT" for Suzanne's post, my bad.

  • Lightroom 1.4.1 Old thumbnails appear when importing new photos

I have recently been having a wierd issue with Lightroom 1.4.1 that on an initial scan of the forums have not found answered (apologies if this is has appeared before)
When importing a new batch of photos, the initial preview thumbnails display old images that already exist in my library.
These preview images sometime change quickly to the fresh imported image but when I import a large volume of RAW files the old images sometimes take a long time to change to the new ones, and sometimes require me to open each photo individually in order to update the thumbs which is slow and laborious.
I'm assuming that the numbers of my new images may be the same as existing ones and that's where the confusion arises.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    cheers
    Olly

The problem could be another program that's indexing your files.
Try installing Process Explorer (or the command line "Handle" program), both from Microsoft/SysInternals, and see if there's a process other than Lightroom that has the file open.

  • Songs, albums etc blank when importing!

    You've gotta love iTunes..
The last couple of days iTunes refuses to add songs/albume/artist etc name when importing music. Sometimes buying music at work, bring it home to load it into my iTunes here. I am doing nothing to the album, just burning it as it is. When I get home I put the cd in and iTunes finds it through Gracenote and everything looks to be in order. But upon importing all info about every single track is gone. All I get is # 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc and so forth.
This is starting to make me angry. Any solutions out there?
PS; tried importing both as mp3 and with "apple lossless"
PS2; tried importing three times now, and track # 1 and 2 is there, as they should, but the rest of the 30 tracks are just numbers.

I'm brand new at this, but I think my problem is similar.iTunes only imports the titles of songs from a CD.When I sync with my iPod,that's all I get.(The titles.)That goes through a CD fast! =:O

  • Getting distorted aspect ratio when Importing my TIFF picture files

Trying to import some Powerpoint slides in order to intercut between the slides and the speaker. When brought to the browser or timeline, these TIFF files, which looked fine on the cd, have taken on a widescreen 1.88:1 look. Under the motion tab in the browser they also show up as being distorted, and scaled down to 75%. I can manually reset these attributes one at a time, but what a huge pain. Are there some settings I can play with to preserve the original attributes of the TIFF pictures?
    Thanks,
    John Freeman

I'd guess th TIFFs are larger than 720 X 480. If you don't need to move them around in Final Cut, you might take them into Photoshop and do the resizing there. In Photoshop, can can program an Action to make this quicker and easier.
What is the frame size of these TIFFs?

  • No thumbnail previews when importing video

I am attempting to import video I shot using a Sony HXR-NX70U. I have done this multiple times without issue, but today when I connected the camera via USB iPhoto would not display any thumbnail previews, instead only displaying dotted lines:
This isn't the worst problem in the world, but it is annoying as I have hundreds of individual video files on the camera from multiple shooting sessions and have no way to tell them apart. I suppose I could just import them all, but I would rather not go through that hassle.
Any idea what the problem is here?

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - Run Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails.

  • Album details blank when importing.

When I insert a new music CD (i.e.; Sony BMG, etc.), iTunes obediently opens and blindly lists the tracks and times (track 01, X:XX, etc.) but no details.
Even the artwork (which I can't imagine a Sony BMG album not including) doesn't appear (even if highliting a track, etc.).
Seems like either I'm missing some iTunes setting or there's a bug that requires the user to (before importing) go to iTunes main window>files>get info before the (buggy?) program will list the track titles, etc. Only then does 'my' iTunes importing list details. Still failed to show the artwork (i.e.; The Best Of Mandy Moore)
Does everybodies iTunes do this? Surprise me and answer no.

You're never going to get the artwork from
    gracenotes/CDDB.
You can look it up yourself at places like amazon.com
or allmusic.com and cut/paste it into the song inof.
Or use Tag&Rename to get it automatically, free
    30-day trial.

Thanks. Been screenshotting the Music store album covers, pasting them into paint, cutting the album out, converting them to jpeg and importing them into the CD info window. A lot of effort, but I avoid amazon, ebay and all those weird places who want my ccard and personal info.

    Hi
The value of the Channel Strip volume etc is not stored within the C Strip setting, as you have discovered.
If you really wanted, you could add a Gain plug to the strip, with it set to give the correct output level with the Fader set to 0
(Or just set the fader manually in MS)

  • Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS has compatability with those files.

Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS had compatibility with those files added long ago. Am I missing something?

I agree Terrance. However, I was able to copy other large batches of other files (my music for example) without any issues. The issue only showed up when copying iPhoto's library and/or the photos themselves. This was repeated 3 times; I copied all my other files to the drive then it unmounted on iPhoto. And, as I said, again when I started with a fresh reformat and just iPhoto. That does not seem like hardware to me if it is only happening with one set of files.
I have managed to get the iPhoto library to work on my other external drive. It wanted a rebuild twice and a thumbnail rebuild once. I am now attempting to copy it over to the new HGST internal drive.
Anyone have a suggestion for alternatives to iPhoto? I have aperture, maybe I will try that. But from what I understand, it just shares the same library as iPhoto.

  • Tiff transparency disappears when imported into InDesign C6

I have a problem With my tiffs - they lose the transparency when I import them into InDesign.
The original tiff can be imported without problems.
To ajust the size of all of the original photos, I used the Image Processor in Photoshop. This seemed to work fine, the transparency is still shown in Photoshop, but now disappears when I import the tiff into InDesign.
I do hope anyone can help me with this problem

When saving tiff in PS ensure you tick Save Transparency box:

  • When importing Raw into A3, in what format is the picture displayed? Jpeg or tiff.

When importing Raw into A3, in what format is the picture displayed on the screen? Jpeg or Tiff ?

None of the comments you have gotten are particularly useful.  The display is independent of format of the file.  It's rendering is of the full pixels in the image file that you have imported, modified by any adjustments you have made, or not if you ask to see the Master.
Even if your Master was imported as a JPEG, as seen on the screen it would have been decompressed, and you would see all the pixels (that the screen is capable of).  However, a JPEG may have lost some detail in the compression, but when decompressed has the same number of pixels as the equivalent uncompressed photo format -- but some of them may result from interpolation, and not be the original.

  • Thumbnails do not match video content when imported

My thumbnails do not match video content when imported. They assume the look of the first video imported into an event, while showing correct source content when skimmed through. Also, audio for every video clip I import is changed to that of the first clip imported in an event. Very awful to realize only when you've just imported every video you've made. Any thoughts?
Also, my source for clips is an external OneTouch drive, don't know if that plays into the import problem.

Is your Event source list visible on the bottom left of your screen? You should see all your events there.
There is a button at the extreme lower left of the imovie window which allows you to show or hide the event list. Make sure that it is in show position, so you can navigate to your other events.

  • Some photos in iphoto are missing and there are blank thumbnails which when i try to open them show an exclamation sign

some photos in iphoto are missing and there are blank thumbnails which when i try to open them show an exclamation sign

The exclamation make is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path to the original photo.
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • InDesign crashing when importing tiff images

I have upgraded to InDesign CC 2014. I have trouble importing some tiff images. InDesign crashes. Not all tiff images create problems. It depends on which version of Photoshop, they are saved in. If I open the image in Photoshop and saves again, there are not any problems. Our database is very large and contains several folders, so it is a big task to archive all images again, even if I create an action in Photoshop. I have searched, but I can not find any settings in InDesign that helps. Does anybody else has encountered this problem and found a solution?

ASk in the Id forum and provide exact system info, versions of PS, details about your files and so on. There is an issue with legacy color profiles in some cases, but beyond that I'm not aware of other problems that may be relevant here.

  • When importing photos from my iPhone black boxes appear in place of random photos in the library and in Photostream.

When importing photos from my iPhone black boxes appear in place of random photos in the iPhoto library and in Photostream. It has no apparent pattern, the photos are just blank. It's not just icons, when I go to edit the photos externally in Photoshop it opens an image filled with nothing but black.
This is more than annoying. It's effectively deleting photos I'm taking on vacation and so forth.
    Anyone?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD
