Thumbnails but "!" for pics

Oh help. I can see my thumbnails but when I click on my pictures to edit or print it comes up with a gray screen and a dotted line with an "!" instead of the picture. I have read below that this has happened to others so I followed previous advice and moved everything to the desktop then created a new library and dragged all folders back and now EVERY picture is only a thumbnail and not available to edit. oops what have I done???

Believe it or not, Pages from Apple (part of iWork '06) does a great job with adding text to pictures, masking pictures and adjusting exposure, color etc. Besides, it lets you access the photos from your iPhoto library through the Media window so you don't even need iPhoto open, or dig around in your library folder.
The only odd thing is getting the finished product out, I use Print PDF to iPhoto (it's under the gear wheel menu in a print dialog), which runs a script to generate a pdf-converted-to-photo that gets imported to iPhoto.
What I like about Pages is that it has precise control over text and placement, and it handles masking by shape and transparency so intuitively that I just can't get used to anything else.

  • Can see thumbnails but can't see actually pics

Ok I have a really serious problem with iphoto. Every once in a while I will try to double click on a photo to view it but I will just get a white screen with the spinning thing like on startup. Usually I just delete the photo because it hasn’t happened to any important photo’s till now. All of the pics I took of my dog as a puppy are screwed up (as well as many others) The same thing happens to them. You can see the thumbnails but nothing more. I tried holding down apple, option control shift or whatever the combo is on iphoto startup and rebuilt the iphoto library but the same thingkeeps on happening. I tried dragging the thumbnails to the desktop and opening them in preview and I got this message “couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format tht preview doesn’t recognize” I don’t know what to do. I really need these photo’s. oh an i have already done fsck, reset pram, repair permissions and all that jazz nuthin works. i'd like to know how to prevent this from happening and more importantly fix/repair the 'corrupt' photos because they are the only coppy of them that i have
all of the photo's were taken with a sony cybershot 3.2 megapixel camera and uploaded straight into iphoto

    BH:
Did you change the name of the files inside the iPhoto Library folder or the titles in the iPhoto window? If it's the former and you've done nothing else to the library here's a method you can use to get those files back and the library up and running normally. The "white" photos will be be back in their original roll but they should be back in the library.
How to recover those photos lost due to renaming in the Finder
1 - make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder
2 - do a search of just the iPhoto library folder with the following criteria:
File name contains ".jpg" and File size is less than 1 KB.
That will find all of those zero sized files that were created when iPhoto couldn't fine the originals.
3 - move those zero sized image files to the trash.
4 - now delete those "bad" photos from the iPhoto library using the normal method. (you don't have to but if you don't they will be recovered every time you do a library rebuild with the "recover orphaned photos" option selected).
5 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and when the rebuild menu comes up select the last option, "Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder"
This will recover those renamed files and put then in a new roll. The only downside is that their titles in iPhoto will be "Roll xx-1, etc. You can do a Get Info on them, find the actual file name and change the title so they are the same.
So it can be done with a little work.

If I delete all my photos in my camera roll will it still be in my iCloud ??? And I made a photo stream for pics of me and my friends is t in my iCloud ? I want to delete all my pictures but will it be in my iCloud ?

Don't rely on iCloud to back up your pictures.  It's designed to sync them to your devices, not back them up.  Photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days, allowing your devices enough time to download them.  But if you ever lose your device, or have to replace it, any photos older than 30 days will no longer be in iCloud to download.
To keep your photos, import them to your computer using your usb cable while they are still in your camera roll, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  After importing them, you will be given an option to delete them from your device.

  • 2 iphoto libraries? and viewing all thumbnails but can't view landscape

We have 2 users set up on the computer and I have recently noticed that the iphoto libraries in each of the users/pictures folder don't seem to be the same size. Are these truly 2 different libraries based on which account our photos were imported into?
AND, my recent imports into iPhoto seems to be behaving 'funny'. I can view all the thumbnails, but, when I try to open any landscape photos, the picture flashes, and then I only see a black screen. The portrait photos in the same event are viewing without issue? Any ideas?

iPhoto is based on a database. Once you import/copy the photos into the library you can add a photo to multiple items, i.e. albums, books, calendars, without having to duplicate the original image file. All management of the photo is done within iPhoto and it's database. All access to photos for use in or out of iPhoto is done from within iPhoto. There's no need to get into the library via the Finder.
The following is from one of Terence Devlin’s posts on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It’s the definitive treatise on the subject.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the iPhoto Library Folder directly has never been supported in any version of iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For Users of 10.5 and later
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
For users of 10.4 and later ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: faster and b: Safer than rooting around in the old Library Folder.

  • I am using iphoto '09 version 8.1.2. (424) today a few photos will not open.  I can see them as thumbnails but they try to open and then a big ! mark appears

I am using iphoto '09 version 8.1.2. (424).   Today a few photos will not open.  I can see them as thumbnails but when I  try to open them they start to open and then a big ! mark appears.  I have not had this problem before.  Can you help

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Icons instead of thumbnails, but only on specific file type

I have windows 7 and am using MS 2007.
Thumbnails work for some of my files: images and powerpoint, but not on files for pdfs, excel and word. Except if someone was using Word for Mac and sends me the file.

    Hello KylieJ,
Try one of the below method and let us know the result.
    1. On the picture folder, Click on
Organize, then Folder and Search Options.  Click the
View tab.  Make sure that "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
does not have a check mark next to it.
    2.    In control Panel, Click on the System icon. Click on the advanced system settings link. Under Performance, click on the Settings button. In the Visual Effects tab, Check "Show thumbnails instead
    of icons.”
    3. Run disk cleanup and place a check in front of "Thumbnails."
Hope this will solve your problem!

  • Thumbnail Preview for RAW Files Not Appearing in Bridge

    Hello,
I'm running Adobe Bridge 5.1 on a Mac OS 10.9.2 (recently upgraded to Maverick) and I can no longer see thumbnail previews for my RAW files (which include .NEF, .CR2 and .RAF) though as of a few days ago this wasn't a problem. Not sure if it's related to the Maverick upgrade... but FYI, I do see thumbnail previews for .TIFF and .JPEG files.
I've already purged my cache generally and have also as a test chosen a local file to purge - that didn't work.
I've restarted Bridge at least 2x by pressing and holding the Option key.
I've also checked for Bridge updates - everything is up to date.
My Cache Options (within Preferences) are set to "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" and "Automatically Export Cache to Folders When Possible" - both checked.
Also downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter 8.3, installed it but that didn't work.
I can't seem to find my Bridge cache folder or at least what's in the Library's "Caches" folder doesn't include anything for Bridge - see screenshot below.
Please help! Thank you in advance.

To me it seems related to your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) converter. Clue inhere is you only miss the Raw files and have no problems in seeing other formats like jpeg and tiff.
The screenshot you delivered is from the wrong library, however, this same library (the one on system level) also is the location where you should be able to view the correct version of your ACR plugin. The path: library (same as per your screenshot)/Application support/ Adobe/ Plug ins/ CS6/ File Formats. inhere should be only one version of Camera Raw (called: "Camera Raw.plugin") and this should show version 8.3 (141).
I'm not sure about your bridge version number, Bridge 5 comes with PSCS6 but my most recent version of Bridge is 5.0.2.4.
Anyway, if you have only one ACR (8.3) installed in the above mentioned path then you might want to try to delete the Bridge plist file and Bridge cache file manually.
For this you have to Quit Bridge and find the user library (by default hidden, use menu Go in Finder and press option key to reveal).
Inhere find the plist file (user(your user name) / library / Preferences  and inhere find and manually delete the file called: "com.adobe.bridge5.plist"
The in same user library find Bridge Cache. User/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6. Inhere are 2 files, the adobe Bridge plug in cache and the folder called Cache. delete (or move outside libray) both items.
The restart Bridge (If needed also again hold option key to reset preferences) and this will create fresh files for the previous deleted items, leaving you with an almost out of the box factory set version of Bridge.

  • Using I web generated website as a storage for pics

Is it possible to access the photos on my Iweb generated webpage to paste them ino an entry on a bulletin board? What i did on my yahoo account was to fill in the html on the image section of a bulletin board entry, and they would then show up in my message.

Photos page/galery is rendered on canvas element, there is no absolute URL to the pic... You need to dig thru your site for it.
    Example, my Lytebox page: http://hdl.50webs.com/Lytebox/Photos.html

  • HT201401 can see thumbnails, but can't see pictures when I tap the thumbnail

On the iphone 4 I can see the thumbnail in the camera roll, but I can't see the picture when I tap on the thumbnail.

    Hey there Delmi,
    Thank you for the question!
It sounds like you open the Camera Roll and see the image thumbnails, but when you tap them to view them larger, the image does not show at all. I have a few recommendations for this. First start by closing the open apps on the phone.
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone and re test the issue.
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists, then I would backup your device to iTunes and then restore it:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Thumbnail but no photo?

    Hi,
there are some photos for which I seem to have only the Thumbnail but not the actual photo.  Is there are way to fix this?  I am not sure whether the photos were deleted or something is corrupted.
In case it might help, after reading a previous post I tried to rebuild the iPhoto library but I am having also a problem with this.  I followed the instructions, that is I opened iPhoto holding down the command and option keys, and the first thing to do was to do a backup of the iPhoto library.  I did that (at the same time as checking that the oldest backup available had the Thumbnails but not the photos).  Now when I try to rebuild the iPhoto library opening iPhoto as before, the workspaces get cleared of all open applications, but the repair dialog does not pop up anymore.  What should I do?
    Thanks!

I am not clear on what youy have or what you did
there are some photos for which I seem to have only the Thumbnail but not the actual photo.
What exactly does this menan? Why do you conclude that you have only the Thumbnail but not the actual photo?
    The rebuild the steps are
1 - Back up your iPhoto library,
then 2 - Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto
then 3 - rebuild your iPhoto library
And this is not clear either - exactlhy how did you determine this?
at the same time as checking that the oldest backup available had the Thumbnails but not the photos)
And this is not clear either
Now when I try to rebuild the iPhoto library opening iPhoto as before, the workspaces get cleared of all open applications

  • Missing thumbnail images for AVCHD files

I never had this problem before.
In the past I would import AVCHD (*.mt2s) video files to the oganizer using Premiere Elements 7.
Then I would open Photoshop Elements 7 and the video files I just imported in Premiere Elements 7 would display their thumbnails just fine.
NOW, these thumbnails do not display.
AVCHD files that I had previously imported still display their thumbnail, but any NEW AVCHD files do not display their thumbnail images; it just displays a default video thubmbnail graphic.
Furthermore, if I select "Update thumbnail" from the context menu of a previously imported AVCHD file with a thumbnail, then the thumbnail image goes away and siaplays the default graphic.
(PLEASE NOTE: when I click the default thumbnail image, it opens the video previewer successfully. So the answer is not that the video file is missing and therefore needs to be reconnected to regenerate the thumbnail image. So else is wrong here.)
How can I get the thumbnail feature to work properly? It works fine in Premiere Elements; the thumbnails images for both new and old imported files display just fine in that program, which is what I used to be able to see in Photoshop Elements. Why is PSE7 not displaying these video thumbnail images?

I have solved this issue myself a month or two ago and forgot to report my findings.
I alspo have a Canon HD camcorder so this was a major issue for me.
The way to resolve this issue (at least in my case) was to download a  codec pack like k-lite. Do a google search for the codec pack or follow this link:
    http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
When I installed the codec pack, I think I had to make sure M2TS files were selected within the installation wizard so just be aware of that.
Another way to resolve this issue is to upgrade to Windows 7. After I upgraded to Windows 7, I did not have to re-install the codec. I think Windows 7 has native support for AVCHD files.
I hope this helps. If it does, please report here if you encounter anything of note worthy since the details of this process are no longer fresh on my mind.

  • Alternate thumbnail images for PDF

Is there a way to export an InDesign file as a PDF and have an alternate PDF thumbnail image (one that's not the first page of the document or the standard Adobe logo)? For example, I want to use a company logo as the PDF thumbnail image for all collateral exported out of InDesign, but it wouldn't necessarily be part of the document. Thanks!

Enable Compatibility View for IE: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11 and the plugin will be recognized.

  • Bridge opens Raw thumbnails but not Preview?

In Bridge I can open Raw files from my Canon 6D as thumbnails but not as the large Preview. The files will open in Camera Raw 8.1 with no problem. I have Photoshop CS6 13.0, and Bridge 5.0.0.399. I am on a Mac Pro OS 10.8.4
    What can I do?

Thanks Curt. Went to Downloads, then to Product updates and there I found updates for all Adobe products; clicked on Bridge for Macintosh and downloaded 5.0.2.4; then clicked on Photoshop for Mac and downloaded CS6 version 13.0.4 (didn't have 13.1??). Everything is working properly now. And I have learned how to find updates at Adobe! Thanks again.

  • I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

I imported photos from an old iPhoto (2001) to photo library and can now see them only as thumbnails but not when I click on them. The screen is black cannot see or print either. Is there any way to salvage those old photos? I now use iLife09. OS 10.6

Did you import the old iPhoto library into the new one? That's not what you want to do because you will import all of the original, modified and thumbnail files as if they were original files. Lots of duplicates and useless small photos.
Do you have a backup copy of the library that you imported into to?  If you do then bring it in and then use  iPhoto Library Manager to merge the two libraries into a new, 3rd library.
If you don't then you'll have to try to fix the current one and then cull out the duplicates and small useless photos as follows:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If this doesn't fix the problem you'll have to start over from scratch and create a new library from the files inside the Originals folder of your current library.  But first you should cull out the small photos that would be the thumbnails from the 2001 library.
Move the Originals folder to the Desktop, open and do a search for Kind=photo, File size is less than 10 KB.  That should find all of the thumbnail files which you can then drag to the Trash.  You might have to make that less than 50 KB. Then Import the remaining photos into a new iPhoto library.
