Thumbnails grey

I am shooting tethered, and the images come in with the thumbnail image grey, but the preview image is visible. If I go to the folder that the images are stored in, they are all there, so it's just the thumbnails that won't appear. If I go to "create thumbnails" it will, but then when I do a new shot, it comes in with the thumbnail grey.

Do the thumbnails appear as dashboxes or unsupported, or are the thumbnails actually grey?

  • Grey thumbnails/grey images

Although my images are able to be opened in Preview and Photoshop, they are merely grey rectangles in my Iphoto app. Following previous posts I rebuilt my Iphoto Library which allowed me to see my last imported roll of images (thumbnails as well as actual photos) however none of my previous rolls are viewable.
    Should I reinstall Iphoto?
    Thanks for your help
    Gregg

    Hi Greg,
If a rebuild didn't work, then you should create a new library and import the images from the old library to get your images back.
A reinstall of iPhoto will not help.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "open" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
    Lori

  • Grey thumbnail, grey loupe view-- no photograph displayed in library mode

When I import a new batch of photographs my library mode, both in grid and loupe view will not show my new photographs.  And not that it just takes a bit of time to load-- the picture will not show, only gray.  This has only happened in the last month or so.  Previously everything worked well.
To get my pictures showing I have to go to develop mode and view them.  The loading is taking considerably longer than it used to as well.  I've been into my preference pane and can't see what to do.  As per a tutorial I upped my "Camera Raw Cache Settings" to 50 GB.  The problem hasn't coincided with this change however.  I don't know what is going on but I am frustrated to have all photos load but not show up in Grid or Loupe mode.
Any ideas?  I have over 7,000 photos in library.  I've validated and checked library and it comes back okay.
    Thanks for your help.
My computer is a newer 27" imac so I should have plenty of juice to run the program.  Hard drive space isn't an issue as I have a 1TB.

Sounds like a corrupted preview cache.  Let's test that theory.  Close LR. Find your catalog on your hard drive, and rename the Previews.lrdata or move it to another location - you can delete it later when we know the new one's ok.  Now restart LR, go to Grid view, select all and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews.  Hopefully that'll bring back your previews and if everything looks correct, you can then delete the previous one.

  • My Iphone4 just stopped saving pics to camera roll from screen shot, email, safari, text and more.....

I have a 32gb iphone4 with ios 4.3.5(8L1).  Yesterday I was given ,via sd card, 6 pictures of me that were taken a few days ago. I emailed these pics from my home computer to myself so I could save them on my iphone4, so I could edit them in Camera+ and post them on Instagram.  I saved all 6 from email to my camera roll no problem.  Then I imported the first one into Camera+ and edited it. When I went to save the edited picture to my camera roll it took a long time to save. (or so I thought it was saving).  When I went to my camera roll to look at it my camera roll said " Rebuilding Camera Roll ". When it was done my picture was not there.  So I tried again with the same outcome. Then I tried to go back to my email and save another picture. No luck, " Rebuilding Camera Roll " and no picture saved after that.  So then I tried to edit a picture that I actually took with my Iphone4 built in camera and same issue.  Then I tried to take a picture through Camera+ and same outcome.  Then I tried to save through safari and still no luck.  Then I went back to my email picture and did a screenshot. It worked!! Then I tried it again and it did not work.  Then I tried to master reset and this did not fix anything.  Then I turned my phone off over night thinking that would do the trick, nope!  Then I tried all the above again today with no luck.  Then I called Apple Tech. and they want $30 to talk to them to ask them what is wrong. That made me very disappointed since I paid over $400 dollars for my phone and pay over $1500 a year to use it.  That's bad business if you ask me and will weigh in when it is time to renew.  Does anyone have any insight on what the problem may be and, or how to fix it??  Please help!! Thank you very much!

Ighnot, are you jailbroken? Cause I am and I have the same problem except worse. I can't save a single pic, every single time I get the thumbnail grey box with jpg in it and the actual pic is black. Only way I get pic is by zooming in then taking screenshot and I still get the stupid safari toolbox and address bar in the pic

  • Lost or hidden photos in iPhoto 9.4.2

Recently I lost a small group of photos I downloaded to iPhoto. There was 20 photos and a couple of small video streams. I filled up the 16GB card while shooting. Took the card from the camera and added another card and continued shooting. Later I put the 16 GB card in my MacBook Air which has about 10 GB of space left on the flash drive and downloaded the photos. I am traveling at the moment and did not have a back up external HD with me. I disconnected the card and then reviewed and edited the photos in iPhoto. Later I showed a couple of the photos to family. This morning the photos are gone or hidden. In events there is a thumbnail reflecting the date I downloaded. The thumbnail cover photo is a grey silhouette palm tree with no photos in this event album. I reconnected the card and the photos are no longer on the card. I don't know what happened. Is there any way I can retrieve these photos.

At no point did I download 16 GB of information onto a drive with 10 GB of space. I guess I wasn't clear in my original note and question. There was about 10 GB of space on my MacBook Air. Yesterday I downloaded about 20 photos in JPEG format and a few videos, 30 sec to 1 minute in length, that I took that day, from a card that was full.  What's that, at max a couple of GB.
Later I downloaded another 1 or 2 GB of photos and video from a new unfilled 16 GB card. At that point I had about 6 GB of available space on the flash drive of my MacBook.
Then, after the 2 downloads I edited photos in the 2 event folders. When I was finished I showed my family a few photos from the first download from the full card. At some point the photos from the first download disappeared in iPhoto. The folder from the first download in iPhoto is still there but with a thumbnail grey silhouette palm tree but no photos. This morning I inserted the full memory card which is a Sansdisk Ultra Extreme. The rest of the information on the full 16GB card is still there but the 20 photos from yesterday are missing.
I am looking for a little help here from someone who will read each line of the email thread and give me some suggestions on what may have happened and what I can do in an attempt to recover the photos.
I just looked there is currently 8.25 GB of available space.

  • Unsupported and/or damaged files?

    Hi.
I just plunged into the LR world, and started importing photos from my disk. After importing, I get a report that states that "Some import operations were not performed. The files appear to be unsupported or damaged." But the thing is that no other program - including CS3 and Bridge - have encountered a problem with these (13) files. Neither do I get any hints of what sort of problems this may be, or how they may be solved. Anyone here got an idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    ole k,
    norway.

Thanks a lot, John. At least this gave me the comfort of not feeling like the one only struggling with this. Still, the answer raises a few more questions. To quote from the link: "If you've added metadata to a file in both Lightroom and a different application, such as Adobe Bridge, an exclamation mark indicates that metadata has been saved to the file in an external application". The questions are:
    1) as this happened while installing LR for the first time, ALL metadata had been created using a different application. So why were only a few !-marked?
    2) Also, why were the thumbnails grey? (this was not mentioned in the link above)
    3) Metadata were saved in an external application. So what? Does that matter? Should I do something to this?
    4) What should I do? Just click (and thus bring forth) the thumbnails, accepting that the metadata may be stored somewhere else, and start hoping that doesn't matter?
    5) Why is LR the only program that notifies me of this? Why is it more sensitive than others?
Again, thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction somehow, and like you, I widh adobe would collect not only those little icons, but also include search words like exclamation and grey thumbnail (in some combination) in their Help file.
In addition to all this, I can't see why Adobe refuses to import 318 files because they already exist - when I'm running my first import ever in the prog!
    And yet I've only just begun . . . . :-)
take care, john and all you others out there

  • Corrupted clips in iMovie?

    Hello,
I have been experiencing a strange problem with iMovie lately. I have found that, when a clip is finished importing, it seems to corrupt a bunch of the other clips I have already imported so that it is impossible to spool through them by sliding the mouse over the thumbnail, and of course it is impossible to edit them. This only seems to effect some of the clips, and I can "fix" it temporarily by removing the clip that caused the problem from the iMovie events folder in Finder, and restarting iMovie. But if i try to re-import the clip again, the problem returns. The clips that seem to be causing this problem are .m4v files with the following codecs: H.264, AAC and Text
It also has the effect of turning some of the thumbnails grey as you can see in this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/7YFMg.jpg
One piece of advice that i have come across for problems like this is to detele the com.apple.iMovie.plist file. However, I have gone to my Preferences folder in Libray, and that file does not exist at all. Could this be the source of the problem? How do I reinstate this file? I have even tried completely reinstalling iLife '11.
My OS is Snow Leopard (although I think I'll upgrade to Lion soon), and my version of iMovie is 9.0 from iLife '11.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
    Ed

In iMovie 08 and 09, it would not even import a clip with a text track. The import would fail. To be honest, I have not tried this in iMovie 11, so I am not sure if the limitation still exists. The text track might be chapter markers or closed captions or something like that.
My advice would be to do a test where you imported the clips without the text track.
To do that, I would open up the clip in QuickTime Pro and delete the text track.
Alternatively, you might be able to delete the text track in MPEG Streamclip by dragging the clip into MPEG Streamclip and exporting to QuickTime with the same video and audio codec but without the text track. I am not sure of this , but it is worth a try, since MPEG Streamclip is free, and QT Pro V7 costs $30. Also MPEG Streamclip has a batch mode, so if you had hundreds to do, this would make it easy.
Also, go ahead and upgrade to iMovie 9.0.4.

  • Is there an issue with iCloud syncing on iWork apps?

I thought everything was ok with iCloud syncing but I seem to now have issues.
I created a spreadsheet under Pages on my iPad (3rd Gen) and, after pressing the 'spreadsheet' button to show thumbnails of all docs being worked on, I'm seeing a small arrow pointing upwards on the thumbnail.  Before, I used to see a progress bar updating in the thumbnail (which I presume is updating to iCloud).
Now? Nothing.  The arrow stays and nothing is updated on my iPhone 4.   In fact, a previous version of my spreadsheet is shown on my iPhone with the same upwards pointing arrow but with the whole thumbnail 'greyed out'.  I can't even open it on the iPhone to delete it!
Is this a know issue and are there any fixes?  I've tried the usual turning iCloud off and on for both devices but this has not had any effect.

    This is ridiculous!
I have now established that there are issues with Pages, Numbers and Keynote documents!!!  They surely cannot all be corrupted?
I have managed to salvage an important Numbers Document which I have copied in to iTunes (and subsequently on to my external HD).
To try and rectify the situation I have then turned off iCloud on all 3 apps on both my iPhone 4 and iPad and deleted all documents under each app.  I have then gone on to iWork under iCloud and deleted all documents off there (some of which I noted were not the up-to-date documents I had been working on in iOS).  I had to turn off iCloud regardless to delete a couple of the documents on my iPhone (under all 3 apps) as some documents were greyed out (see original post) and could not be deleted.  As soon as iCloud was disabled it enabled me to remove off the local device.
Having switched iCloud back on to my iPhone and iPad (and bearing in mind I had deleted all documents off both iOS devices and in iCloud) the greyed out thumbnails re-appear (and cannot be deleted or altered!!!!)
    Anybody? Aaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!

  • My photos will not load on the iPhone. Both directly accessing 'Photos' and from 'Camera roll' results in applications shutting down by itself and returning to home screen

    Help please

  • Re iphoto: when I double click on a thumbnail i get e grey screen with exclamation mark..can't access my photos to edit, order prints etc

Was wondering if anyone can help...I am not very computer friendly but want to be able to edit my photos, use them as jpegs, order prints etc. When I double click on a thumbnail ( am presuming the thumbnails are the small photos ) I get a grey screen with an exclamation mark on it. I cannot drag the thumbnail onto the desk top it just pings back. This doesn't happen with all the thumbnails and has been a problem since we upgraded to snowleopard. I recently reinstalled photos from the memory card from my camera and they are alright. I am presuming that the old photos are stuck in there somewhere if only I knew the right buttons to press to get them out. Thanks, Jane Thomas

Easiest: Restore from your back up.
    Otherwise:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • When searching Google Images with FireFox, the first page of images are visible in thumbnails but all subsequent pages are greyed out.

This happens every time on a Google search. Greyed-out thumbnails will show individually if double-clicked. Every page of images after page 1 experiences the same problem. Reload does not help.
Is this a Google problem or a Firefox problem?

Doc: I've had a similar experience, and here are the details, investigation, and a workaround. My printer is a Brother MFC-645CN, and I'm using Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on a 2010 iMac quad i5 connected to the printer over my ethernet LAN. Are you using a Brother printer?
Firefox has shown this kind of nasty issue for the past six months or so. It seems to be related to the imaging algorithms in Preview when dealing with Firefox (now at v.12) and the Brother printer -- the screwy second page (and beyond) show up skewed and up-sized when doing a print preview also. No such problem seen in Safari or anything else. I am not currently using any other Mozilla apps on this Mac besides Firefox.
A few months ago I tested printing from my administrator account and  a different user account. Firefox printing was completely normal and as expected. When I went back to my main user account, back came the funky second page.I went through extensive troubleshooting to try to chase it down, systematically removing and replacing apps and preferences and many other Library files related to printing, Brother drivers, Firefox, and Preview. Nothing helped. Solution was to migrate my user files to an account where the printing problem wasn't happening. I deleted the problem user account.
Everything was fine for about three weeks, and then with no warning, printing was back to the bad second page, just as before. I am stumped, and I'll let smarter people try to figure it out. I use Firefox a lot, and it's possible that some add-on setting is interfering, or a web page I visited turned the printing funky again. I just don't know.
Also checked on a Mac G4 running Leopard (10.5.8) and Firefox 3.6.28. No printing/preview problems there.
Now, for the work-around I am currently using -- print each page separately, one at a time. Page 1, then page 2, etc. Preview and printing looks completely normal. Hope this works for you until the bug is located and squashed for good.

  • Organizer not showing photos in thumbnails...only getting grey square w/hour glass

The organizer is only showing a blank grey square as the thumbnail and not the actual photo.  However, once I click on the thumbnail, the photo pops up and is veiwable.  This is a problem that just recently started.  All of my other photos, in other albums, are viewable as thumbnails in the organizer.

Is the problem specific to some particular images?Does right click>Update thumbnails helps?
It would be good if you could recreate your thumbnials.

  • Greyed out thumbnails

  • Thumbnail/Quick Preview/Export have strange grey overlay

I spent quite some time googling this issue, so it's starting to seem like a "just me" issue. Yet I can't find a way to solve it, so here I go asking for help.
I have a library with a single project and a series of photos in it. Most photos have a crop, white balance, exposure, sharpen and curve global adjustments, as well as areas with definition brush strokes and dodge brush strokes. The dodge brush was used to make the "almost white" background around product in the shot completely white.
The thumbnails display a light grey (around 250;250;250 RGB, although it varies a bit) blotchy overlay in the areas of the image that are expected to be white. When I click on a thumbnail to bring up the larger image into view, for the first few seconds, while the "loading" spinner is visible on top, the grey overlay can also be seen on the enlarged image. After loading is finished, it disappears. If I turn on the Quick Preview mode, the grey overlay persists and does not go away. Images that I have viewed enlarged with Quick Preview turned off continue to display correctly when I come back to them after looking at other images, as if they are cached in memory. After I view a few dozen images, though, these correct versions seem to be evicted from cache, and I get the grey overlay during the "loading" period again.
The grey overlay does not correspond one-to-one with the area where brush strokes have been applied.
The scariest part of it all is that when I try to export versions, they are exported with the grey overlay intact.
I have tried rebuilding thumbnails, reprocessing masters, repairing permissions, repairing the database. The problem persists. I have tried disabling the dodge adjustment but unchecking it and then checking it again. The problem persists. I have tried removing the dodge adjustment and then brushing it on from scratch. The problem persists.
Out of ideas now. Please help. I would love to attach screenshots, but don't see an option to do so.

All you are seeing is the difference between the fully-decoded image created on the fly by applying the adjustments saved as instructions in the Version text file to the Master image file, and the Preview created according to the parameters you set in Preferences.
If the Previews don't meet your needs, try a higher quality/larger dimensions.
    Likewise for your exports.
What are your Preview and Export settings?
Take a look at the highlighted section
How Aperture Displays Images in the Viewer
on this page in the User Manual.

  • IPhoto Book thumbnail...why is there a grey spot showing?

I just finished building a iPhoto Book. My photos that I used are high resolution photographs. No sign of any low resolution whatsoever. When I scroll through the thumbnails of the book, there is a page (which has three high res photos) where the top photo is located....a big grey box is in its place. However, when I look at the actual book itself (below the thumbnails), the photo is there in all of its glory. When I buy the book, will there be a big blank spot where the photo is supposed to be...or will the photo be there? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

It means the image is flagged.  When you "roll over" the corner of an image you have the option to flag it for quick access at a later time.  Open the image and click the flag to unflag it.
