Thumbnails in Column & List views

My Finder (v10.4.5) mostly does NOT show the thumbnails of my JPGs in Column & List views, unless those JPGs were created on my computer (Tiger 10.4.6).
I got it to finally show the thumbnails in Icon view (View > Show View Options > Show Icon Preview + All windows), but I also want to see the little thumbnails in Column and List Views. Anyone know how to do this.
NOTE: those same JPGs that don't get the thumbnails on my MAC, do show thumbnails on my crappy-*** Windows ME Dell's Explorer.
By the way, (different Question) is there a way I can set up to be notified via email when somebody replies to my question here in this discussion area?
Thanks,
Ted

With a Finder window open in Column view, when you go to the View menu item and select Show View Options there are not any "Show Icons" or "Show preview column" selections for me to check.
That is very very strange. Try opening a Finder window, have it in icon view, and the bring up Show View Options, I presume you are getting the options? Now go to View (don't close the options window!) and change to List. A different set of options should appear in the options window, and if you then change the view to Column what happens to the options window?
If you want to see thumbnails for files that don't have them you either use Column view with a preview column set to display icons, or put the folder in Icon view. The Mac OS Finder does not create thumbnail.db files, as does Windows (I believe many Linux window managers create analogous files). Instead the Finder either reads the thumb from the resource fork of the file (most--maybe all--Mac graphics programs have always had the ability to create custom icons that are a part of the file), or else it will create a thumb "on the fly" for files that don't have them if told to do so in Icon and Column views. In List view it will display a small icon if the file has one, otherwise it just uses the generic icon. Windows is incapable of reading Mac resource forks, where the custom icon is for files created on a Mac, and the Finder is incapable of reading Windows thumbnail.db files. Any file you create on your Mac with a Mac graphics program will have a custom icon, if you set the preference of the program to save the file that way. This includes Image Capture, if you use it to transfer files from your camera. Images you get from a Windows or Linux box, or download from the Internet, do not have a resource fork and so do not have a custom icon.

  • Selecting items in column/list view copying them and pasting them to

    in the past (was it OS 9 ?????? ) i would be able to select all items in a folder
    if i had a long list of titles of files ( songs ) and copy to clipboard and then paste them to text edit and have that list handy for future reference. for example if i have a DVD with 100 photos. I want to keep a file of the names only. I used to be able to select all of them copy and then paste to a document. Cant do it in TIGER????? am i wrong?
    work arounds....

    Hi, Glenn.
    How this works now appears to depend on the application into which you are pasting the results.
    If I open a folder, Select All (Command-A), Copy (Command-C), and then paste into a TextEdit document, if the contents include PDFs it actually pastes all the PDFs into the document! Looks like a change in how this works.
    If I paste into a Carbonized text editor, like Tex-Edit Plus, it pastes the file names, as expected.
    Here's a workaround:
    1. Open the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder and Lunch Printer Setup Utility. You should see a printer icon in your Dock.
    2. Drag and drop the folder whose contents you want to save a listing of to the icon in the Dock.
    3. When the Print window displays, either:• Click Preview. A print preview of the FInder info for those files appears in Preview. If you like what you see, select File > Save As... and save the output.
    • Click the PDF pop-up button and select "Save as PDF" from the list. Follow the prompts from there to save the Finder info as a PDF file.The resulting PDF saves the list you desired.
    Good luck!

  • Thumbnail Icons in list and Column View

    I am trying to find out how to change icons for media files (pics/movies) from generic file type icons to thumbnail previews of the file. I Know its possibel because one of my folders (photos/iphoto/origionals.....)shows up in the column and list view as thumbnails. NONE of my other folders do though. I have tried messing with the view options, and i know you can view thumbnails in the ICON view in finder but this is not what i want to do. I also know that in column view you can preview files in an extra column, also not what i want. So anyone know how to make all icons in all finder views into thumbnails?
    Thanks

    The "icons" you are seeing are QuickLook icons that show a preview of the content in the file. AFAIK, there is no way to disable it. However, you can go into Finder>Preferences>Advanced and enabled the Show all file extensions option to help distinguish between filetypes.

  • Excel like 'Freeze column header' functionality in sharepoint OOB list view webpart

    Hi,
    I have OOB external list dropped on a page as listview webpart. It contains many records and hence while scrolling down headers are no available, hence it should freeze all column headers while scrolling down the page. Its directly dragged and dropped
    on site page hence no server side formatting can be done.
    Is there any way we can apply some client side script to freeze column headers to listview webpart while scrolling down? or any settings that can be done to acheive this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,
    Normal techniques for freezing the header row of an HTML table tend to fall short when it comes to SharePoint 2010 lists due to the lack of THEAD elements.
    You can try something like this, although you may want to test it in various browsers in case the column heading alignment is off.
    <style>
    .ms-viewheadertr{background-color:white;}
    </style>
    <script>
    /* wrap the table in a div, set its height, give it scrollbars, and move it down */
    var myTable = document.querySelector(".ms-listviewtable");
    var wrapperDiv = document.createElement('div');
    wrapperDiv.setAttribute("ID","FreezePaneWrapper");
    wrapperDiv.setAttribute("style","OVERFLOW: auto; HEIGHT: 400px; padding-top:38px;");
    wrapperDiv.appendChild(myTable.cloneNode(true));
    myTable.parentNode.replaceChild(wrapperDiv,myTable);
    /* Freeze the header row and move it up*/
    var headerRow = document.querySelector(".ms-viewheadertr");
    document.getElementById("FreezePaneWrapper").style.width = "" + headerRow.scrollWidth + "px";
    headerRow.style.width = "" + headerRow.scrollWidth + "px";
    headerRow.style.position = "absolute";
    headerRow.style.top = ""+(headerRow.offsetTop-39)+"px";
    /* Tell the header's columns to be the same width as the cells in the first "alternating" row */
    var columns = document.querySelector("table.ms-listviewtable tr.ms-alternating").querySelectorAll("tr>td");
    headers = document.querySelectorAll("tr.ms-viewheadertr th");
    for(var i = 0; i < headers.length; i++){
    if(columns[i].scrollWidth > headers[i].scrollWidth){
    headers[i].style.width = ""+columns[i].scrollWidth + "px";
    }else{
    columns[i].style.width = ""+headers[i].scrollWidth + "px";
    </script>
    Edit: Also, you may want to inspect the HTML attributes on the external list view to be sure the class names match up with the querySelector parameters above. Specifically, the table should have a class of "ms-listviewtable", the header row should
    have a class of "ms-viewheadertr", and rows of alternating background color should have a class of "ms-alternating".
    If any of those are different in your case, you may be able to adjust the above code accordingly.

  • How to calculate the total of a calculated column in a list view at the end of the view?

    I have a view with the following columns ProductName, Quantity, Price, Total The total column is a calculated column which is the product of quantity and price. I want to place the sum of the total column by the end of the list view. I can do this with

    You can use SharePoint Designer and calculate the total in xslt view. Refer to the following post for more information

  • How to add custom columns to the list view in Finder

    Hi,
    I'm looking for a way to view additional file details in the list view in Finder, for example audio bit rate, so I don't have to do "Get Info" for each file separately. I couldn't find a way to add columns other than the ones listed on the view options dialog.
    Can anyone help me find a way to do it?
    Thanks,

    Have you checked the Help menu for what you want to do? I found this in Apple support - List View Options
    Check the AppleScript Forums. There is probably a script that you can use.

  • Question re. Column View/List View in Home Folder and Root Folder?

    <Edited by Host>
    When I set either my Home folder in the Dock or the Root Folder on the Desktop to open in Column View, everything opened is retracted upon closing.
    Is this just the way Leopard is, or am I missing something obvious I should know:
    First, on Tiger, my Home Folder opens directly in the Finder. I don't have to select "Open in Finder," as I have to in Leopard.
    Second, when I select the Column option when opening the Home Folder in the Finder, it automatically sets the Column option for the Root Folder on the Desktop, as well (and vice-versa). In Tiger, they can be set independently. I prefer to have the Root Folder set to List View and the Home Folder to Column View, and have both remain like that. This is what I meant, but got a bit confused before in asking the question.
    Also, is there some way, as in Tiger, to have the Home Folder in the Dock set to open automatically in the Finder, without having to select that option each time I go to the Home Folder?
    Actually, now that I remember, perhaps this isn't such surprising behavior. To get it there, I copied the Home Folder from its position in the Root Folder to the Dock. Maybe there is some other way to get the Home Folder into the Dock? Thanks.

    WZZZ wrote:
    Thanks. The option "Open in Finder" appears at the bottom of a small vertical menu when I click on the Home Folder in the Dock. Command clicking on the Home Folder brings up the other user account, Shared, and my user account, so it's not that useful.
    ah, you are right. well, one more option is to make an alias to the home folder, put it anywhere you want and put the alias on the dock. then clicking (no command-clicking needed) on the alias in the dock will open home in a finder window directly.
    The default in Finder Preferences was already set the way you suggested.
    Now that I know about cmd-n, that gets me directly to the Home Folder in the Finder. And now that it's set up to open in Column View, and remain that way independent of the View option for the Root folder, everything seems to be looking good. That's what I needed.

  • How can I set a default finder list view column size?

    Hi,
    I am having a bit of an issue here.
    I like to use the list view in finder.
    I want to set the name column to a certain size globally, so that all folders display the name at the same width.
    However, currently I resize the column in the folder I'm working in, change folder and return to the original folder and the size has returned to the defaults.
    Any suggestions would be very welcome.

    Hold down the Option key and drag the vertical column right or left as needed.
    Close that Finder window then open a new one. See if that worked.
    It's working for me in Mountain Lion v10.8.4

  • Setup a list-view in more columns

    Hi,
    my aim is a view of listet objects ranged in several columns. The objects should not be shown in blocks separated in different pages. They should be expanded like the list view of the Windows-Explorer. So when growing up it should expand to the right hand side (and being scrollable to the right hand side) and not downwards.
    I've found no way to realize ist in NetWeaver 04.
    Using the elements like Collection Renderer, Resource Renderer and Layout Controller I haven't found a potentiality to implement this.

  • List view threshold error in list view web part, column indexing not working

    Hello all,
    I have a list with about 8000 items and the list view threshold is set at 5000. I want to filter the list by a certain column ("Title", single line of text) so I indexed that column. I can filter the list (AllItems.aspx) however if I put the list
    on a web part page (in the form of a list view web part), I can't filter by that column. Shouldn't the indexed column allow this?
    Note that the threshold will not be increased and a daily time period to bypass the threshold is in place, but I'm looking for a solution for any time of they day.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your response. Your suggestion did work! It got me thinking and I took some time to investigate this column indexing stuff a little closer. I had an "ah-ha" moment.
    Regardless of whether the column has an index or not, dynamic drop down filtering in a list view web part will only work if the list view has fewer items than the threshold. This is the critical point I was missing. I was assuming the index would allow for
    drop down filtering.
    Thanks again!

    Subject: List View & Disappearing Columns
    I am using a ListView and it seems that some of my columns are
    disappearing after I set them in the properties and then compile.
    Sometimes they are truly are gone, and sometimes if I recreate them
    and
    compile again, I get a duplicate object error. I can't tell if it is
    because my list view is mapped to a node with an image in it or if
    that
    is irrelevant. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a work
    around using this widget?
    I like how the column headings are presented with this widget and
    would
    like to keep using it.

    Unfortunately, only Icon and Column views can be set as global defaults. If you open a new window and set it to List view it should continue to open in that same view for the same folder.
    You can submit this as a feedback request (I have done so, as have others - we're hoping for implementation in Leopard...).
    Hope this helps...I know it doesn't solve the problem, but we're in the same boat, so to speak...
    Ps. Are you really running 10.0.x on your G4/G5??? If so, there may be a way to set list view as default, but you should post to the 10.3 & earlier forum as this is the 10.4/Tiger forum.

  • Address Book Print list view column format

    Is there a way of changing the column width of the List View when printing the contacts in Address Book? I select all contacts, check the boxes for address and notes and send so PDF in Preview. The left hand column (Names) takes nearly half the page width. The center column with all the addresses, e-mails and notes is very narrow, which causes the text to wrap in the middle of the address or e-mail.
    If it can't be changed, does anyone know of an application that will use the address book data and allow me to format pages to my specification?

    Thank you KT. I downloaded the utility and was able to create a tab delimited file from Address Book. I also imported the data into Numbers but I could not produce a report format I wanted. I was afraid I was forced to copy the data into Windows and use one of the many address book formatters.
    I kept searching the web and read about Palm Desktop for Mac but that did not include the Notes field. Last night, I believe I found a reasonable solution, it is called "Address Book Reports" by Scruffy Software. There are choices of format and page size. I will try it out today and if it's OK will send the $15 shareware fee.

  • Finder list view name column keeps resizing!

    I mainly use list view in Finder, and I mainly use windows (as opposed to fullscreen) because I like dragging and dropping between them (dragging and dropping in fullscreen with tabs is rather cumbersome).
    Anyway, the name column keeps resizing on me, going from what I have it set to (usually double-clicked to make it fit all filenames) to suddenly being small enough that all the other columns fit in the window without a horizontal scroll bar. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Yosemite and happens every time I open a new Finder window, expand a folder, move a file, etc. It's incredibly frustrating!
    I was surprised to not find much about this problem mentioned around the web, so I imagine it must be some setting or something specific to my machine. Any help in figuring out how to make it stop doing this would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Sorry, no, preferences in the sense of what I prefer, but I believe view options (command J) are stored in DS_Store files, as well as list view column data, such as date added, date modified, name, kind, size, etc (except for some folders such as network, computer and meetingroom/airdrop?) which are stored in com.apple.finder.plist).  You probably know that you can select which columns display in view options.  Perhaps a temporary workaround would be to switch off other visible columns to display only name or name and one other preferred column to increase space available.  However, myself and another suspect this the problems I described as a bug, and I would have to think your issue is part of that bug.  It seems all related, no? For example, in my Downloads folder, I select to hide "Date Modified", show "Date Added", and arrange by "Date Added".  Maybe it will still show if I close the window and reopen the Downloads folder, maybe it will not, maybe it will change completely to Icon View despite have "always open in list view" being selected in view options.  In any case, after a restart, it will revert back to list view, with "Date Modified" showing and being arranged by "Name".
