Thumbnails in finder

Hi
Can anyone please tell me how I can get finder to show thumbnails of the images in my iPhoto library rather than just file names. As you will appreciate it takes ages to open them file by file until you find the one (usually the last) that you're looking for. They are stored as jpegs and all I get at the moment is a jpeg icon with a filename such as img_0054.jpg
Thanks
Ken

You need to set the view option of a Finder window to show an icon. This works in either Icon view or Column view: just go to the menu item View, select Show View Options and check the box for Show Icon Preview (in Icon view), and in Column view check both boxes. In list view the only way to have a custom thumb is to create them as part of the file, and they are so tiny anyway they probably would not help.
But if the images are in iPhoto, why not just browser them from within iPhoto?

Does anyone have experience sorting out the issue of no thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?
There are several conversations in the forum about this problem, but cant seem to find a solution.
Anyone know how to sort this out?

    Thanks for your reply.
Mac does support previewing dngs in finder and preview. This has not been a problem before (besides when using my fujufilm compact camera, which mac now has updated the Apple camera for).
To answer your Q about dng files. Thats exactly what i do. I have work which involves communicating/transfering multiple lr -edited files to someone else whom further edits in ps. Not only that, I personally use dng as a way of storing my files. I suppose like to keep my files tidy and uniform.
Any mac users out there who has a a solution to my issue with previewing dngs?

The links are not showing any images. You have to upload them to a site like flickr or Imagehack and insert the http link in you post, between exclamation marks.
Is your system up to date? Your profile says 10.5.2. You need at least 10.5.6 for Pages.

Hi, Some of my .mp4 and .avi video files have a thumbnail in finder view and some don't... Does anyone know how I can solve this?

Maybe, but maybe not. I use DigitalMedia Converter to convert to DV-AVI Type II's (I'm only doing SD), and it has a Split function. However, I have never used that, so do not know how well it might work for your needs, if at all. I just do not know. I believe that Deskshare has a user forum, and that might be a good place to try, after you've looked down their FAQ's.
I hope that others will have a definitive answer for you, with iron-clad suggestions.

  • DNG thumbnail in finder

(have the newest apple camera update, using canon mark ii, 17-35 mm if that can have anything to with it)

Last August Eric Chan, head RAW engineer, said that OSX does not support previews for particular cameras' DNGs.  The next reply was that OSX didn't support DNG previews for cameras that embed lens corrections in their RAW files.

There may be a QT plug-in for DNGs but I'm not a Mac guy so am not sure if it is universal:

  • Photoshop cc2014 thumbnails in finder window

    Hi,
I've just got off a chat with Adobe about the problem of displaying tiff thumbnails generated by Adobe Photoshop CC2014.  Previous versions of Photoshop gave lovely thumbnails with a white border, and after editing they went slightly greyed out and the border disappeared, so you you could see which files you had worked on and saved.
Now the thumbnails stay the same, and sometimes don't display at all.
Playing with the size of the thumbnails  discovered that at 64 x 64 pixels you can see the thumnails, but go to any size bigger then this all you get is the Generic Tiff tag.  Needless to say this is not suitable.
Adobe said that his was not their problem, but in the next breath said that they are "working with Apple closely to fix it"
I've read about some code that Apple asked Adobe to leave out which may be the cause of this.  Does anyone know if a fix is in the pipeline?
As a professional photographer this has really messed up my workflow.

  • Adobe .dng files do not show as Thumbnails in Finder

I've recently downloaded some Adobe .dng (raw image files) from their site as part of a Lightroom tutorial, but I find that they do not show up in Finder as thumbnails. They all just show the same icon, (which looks like a camera aperture), and this is not helpful when trying to work out which is which.
Is there any way to get Finder to show them as thumbnails please?
    I'm running OS X 10.9.4.
I don't know if it's relevant, but I did have Apple Aperture installed until I uninstalled it recently.
Could uninstalling that have removed raw file handling abilities? On the other hand, when I tried to install the RAWcameraupdate5.04.dmg file from Apple my system advised me that I already had a more recent version installed.

I had the same issue in the past but whatever, it cleared up and I can see the thumbnails in 10.9.4. Other's have reported this in the past so you're not alone. I honestly don't know what the fix is but it has to do with the Finder so if you've got some utilities like Cocktail or can try some stuff either in Terminal or in Single User mode, might fix the issue. If you're up to date with the Apple Raw Software updates but still don't see the thumbs, I suspect it's the Finder.

  • No more JPEG thumbnails in Finder (also no cover flow!)

I don't see any thumbnails anymore in Finder..
I have several JPG's exported by Photoshop, and they look fine in Preview, also in column layout, when you click the file, it shows a thumb, but in icon view and cover flow, I only get to see the JPG icon, instead of a thumb..
    Two screenshots of the problem:

    If what bob said doesnt work or if you already did that which I assume you did - then try this;
go into library>preferences and deleting the finder.plist and finder.sidebar files.
I did this and restarted the machine and my icons for jpegs are back!

  • Is it possible to turn off thumbnails in Finder

    Okay, let's try again.
Would like to get rid of thumbnail previews in the Finder (they take too long to load), and just have the generic file type icons in the column views. Can this be done?
Also, the OS cannot distinguish between Illustrator and Photoshop eps files. Can this be corrected?
    Rich Apollo

    Hi rich -
I did set the the Opens With property in an attempt to get raster files to open with Photoshop instead of Preview.
You might want to take a look at this posting:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1366432#1366432
I get the impression that you may be under a similar misconception about .eps file format. AI & PS each have their own proprietary version of encapsulated postscript, but if the files weren't created by either of those two apps they won't be automatically associated with either one, regardless of the vector or raster nature of the image that was used to create them.
I'm running CS2, so maybe something's changed. Anyway, sure the icons are somewhat distinct, but now I've got yellow ones and pink ones for AI and blue for PS and some other blue that's kind of a generic eps icon.
I don't yet have AI CS2, so I can't address the icon color issue there (although my guess is that the pinks are AI CS files that haven't yet been converted to CS2 & the yellow is the new color used by AI CS2), but PS CS2 does now use blue rather than green. The other blue icon may very well be Preview and used by the eps files that haven't been associated with AI or PS.
Resaving the files doesn't really do anything.
If you just open & save the file, no, it won't change anything. However, if you use File>Save As/Save a Copy As, and specify Illustrator EPS/Photoshop EPS, it most definitely will.

  • White Border Added to File Thumbnails (in Finder) after iPhoto Export??

I recently upgraded to Leopard and iLife '08.
I love having a white border on my photos, but since iPhoto doesn't have the ability to attach a border when exporting, I often add one using Photoshop.
--> First, I export photos to a folder on my desktop
--> Then, I run a batch processing Action in Photoshop to add the borders (via canvas size, if you care)
--> Finally, I add the resulting (bordered) photos to a separate iPhoto library, which I use exclusively to keep bordered versions of my "best of the best" photos.
My question is this. I just dragged a bunch of (non-bordered) photos out of iPhoto to the aforementioned folder on my desktop. When I did this, I noticed that each of the FINDER thumbnails (i.e. not the iPhoto thumbs) now has a white border around it. Opening the file reveals that this white border ONLY applies to the thumbnail (i.e. the actual files look identical to the photos in iPhoto).
    1) Why is this?
    2) I also noticed that the white border (again, in FINDER thumbs) wasn't applied to the 2 photos I previously edited in Photoshop (as opposed to all others, for which I used iPhoto). Why is this?
    Thanks...
    -Jason

    Jason
    1) Why is this?
This seems like a new feature introduced with the Finder in 10.5
    2) I also noticed that the white border (again, in FINDER thumbs) wasn't applied to the 2 photos I previously edited in Photoshop (as opposed to all others, for which I used iPhoto). Why is this?
I can confirm this. Again, a Finder issue. My guess is that it depends on which app creates the thumbnail.
Really, these are questions for Finder people, rather than iPhoto people.

might want to consider something other than column view then. I use icon view if I have files that tend to hang the Finder in column view.

  • Question about thumbnails in Finder

A nice way of assigning custom thumbnails to items in Finder is by bringing up the Get Info panel of a given item, and pasting a copied image (either from the web or an image viewer) to the thumbnail editor in the top left corner.
However, something I've noticed is Finder's inconsistency with resolution. If I'm lucky, the thumbnail will retain the resolution of the copied image, so that no matter what size I readjust the items in a Finder window, the thumbnail will stay crisp. But a lot of the time, and sometimes as soon as the image has copied, Finder seems to decrease the resolution. A way of checking is to copy the thumbnail back from the Get Info panel and paste it into an image viewer. Lo and behold, the image is lower res.
Does anyone know if there is any way to control this and maintain high res thumbnails?
    Thanks very much.

  • Sony files imported as DNG into Lightroom 5 have no thumbnails in Finder

I use Lightroom 5 and always convert my RAW files into DNG format when I import photos.  Since I converted to OS X the DNG thumbnails from my Sony NEX camera do not show up in Finder.  The DNG files coming from my Canon camera do show up as thumbnails.  This is a royal pain since you can't see the photos to identify which one you want without opening it up in Lightroom.  I have checked with Adobe and they are very clear that this is an Apple problem - which my experience would seem to support since the problem started when I converted to OS X.  Any solutions?

  • HT4757 Why can't I see the thumbnails in Finder for my .RW2 Panasonic raw image files with OS 10.7.4 ??

I cannot view my Panasonic DMC-G10 photos anymore with OS 10.7.4 eventhough the tech sheet says I can.  After being FORCED to upgrade in order to transfer certain services from MobileMe to iCloud, this is very disappointing and reminiscent of the legal anti-trust problems that Microsoft had in bundling all their MS software to their operating system.  I want to see my images as stated in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757  What can I do to see my images in Finder ????

ok, have copied the photos again from the memory card and hey presto, it all works fine.  So in summary...for RW2 files from GF1 camera, I have no thumbnail images, couldn't view in Preview, and neither Quickview nor Coverview were working.  Ran the bit of code provided at "https://discussions.apple.com/message/18369759#18369759" (thanks to Snoop Dogg) and then recopied the photos onto my Mac (only required for photos copied since upgrading to Lion, everything from before the upgrade is fine anyway).
    Hope others find this helpful.

  • Change Quicktime Thumbnail in Finder

In my Finder windows, .avi and .mov format Quicktime (QT) movies have a thumbnail preview that is automatically generated from a poster frame.
*I know I could select another "poster" frame from the file, but I want to use a still image*.
With other formatted files, I can copy an icon image, open, "get info," for the file, highlight the icon on the top left, and paste in the still image, and it appears in the finder as that documents icon.
With these QT movie files, while the "get info," window allows me to paste a still image into its icon, it does not appear as the files icon in the finder, its icon is still just the poster frame.
Is there any workaround of this default behavior, so I can use a still image as an icon for one of these QT files?
    (Yes, I have Perian Installed.)

Thanks again orangekay. (BTW, I do have QT Pro.)
+You don't have to render anything to add a frame to a QuickTime movie. Just copy and paste.+
But I would have to, in many cases, if I only want there to be one file.
Because it really does depend on the exact codec, and container type that I am starting with.
You idea worked for me on an h.264, .mov file that I created myself. But, the still image has to be the exact aspect ratio of the movie file, or the still, or the movie file itself, becomes offset in the QT window. So, this requires working on the still's aspect ratio in Photoshop or some other editing software, which although I do have, is too much extra work.
Meanwhile, this does not work with an Xvid .avi that I did not create myself. Though the file allowed me to paste the still in, when I tried to save the file, it gave me the radio button dialogue box, asking me if i wanted the mov to be self-contained, or a reference movie.
Now, I could chose reference movie, and save the disk space, but then I still have two files, and would be better off just using an alias for the movie, (which allows me to paste an icon), and save the trouble of having to set the stills aspect ratio in another program.
