Thumbnails in my Library

I am having difficulty figuring out where the original pictures are. When I scan down my library and double click on a picture sometimes I get the full sized image (1.2 mb or larger) and sometimes I open the thumnail. Why are the large picture and the thumnail picture in the same library? How do I find the large picture so I can get quality prints? It seems to me that my thumbnails shouldn't reside in the same file. I wonder if this happened when I transferred my files from my Powerbook to my MacBook Pro. How do I issolate the thumbnails from the originals?

Lori diloreto has posted a very helpful diagram to explain how your library is organized: http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/.Public/finder.jpg
She explains:
"It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also."
How did you transfer the files from the Powerbook to the MacBook Pro? It sounds like you may have imported the contents of the entire library folder structure. This would give you a library full of edits, originals, and thumbnails which all exist as originals. It would contain more than double the number of images than your original library before the transfer. Do you still have the original Powerbook library? Was the MacBook's library empty before the transfer? If yes and yes, it might be easiest to just start over with a new transfer.
The correct way to move an iPhoto library is simply to copy the entire iPhoto Library folder, in Finder. Leave the folder closed and don't dismantle it in any way. When the library is copied to the new hard drive, Option-launch iPhoto, click "Choose" and navigate to the library in its new location. There's no need to import, unless you are wanting to add to an existing iPhoto library. In that case, it's a whole different ball game.

i can see all of the thumbnails in my library but when i click on photo it becomes an ! not all photos do this but wondering if there is a fix

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Thumbnail view for Library copied from Asset Library does not work

    Hello ,
I created list definition based on Assed Library (I copied files from \15\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\AssetLibrary\AssetLibrary ) - I reused schema.xml and other files.
Then I added my new custom content type.
The problem is following:  thumbnail view does not work now ( "/AssetLibraryDemo/Forms/Thumbnails.aspx" )
I don't have any javascript errors and any specific error in ULS log.
Can you give me advice, why thumbnail view has stopped working?

I need to use "List teplates" gallery functionality for this task.

  • I have thumbnails in my library but no enlarged photo

I have yhumbnails in my library but no enlarged photo.....just an exlamation mark!  Have the photos been lost?  Is there someway to restore the image?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Blank thumbnails even after library repairing

Photos works flawlessly on my 2013 MacBook Pro but doesn't work on my 2009 iMac 27". All the thumbnails remain blank after multiple library repairing and restarting (app and computer). I used the Option + Command + App Launching to access the library repairing function. What else can I do?

    carlaz:
If you rebuild does not work you might try moving the contents of the Data folder to the trash and the rebuild again with the first three options. That will force creation of new thumbnail files. Another way that will work when the normal rebuild does not is to use iPhoto LIbrary Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
Yes, putting the library on an external HD with the ownership turned off is the best way to share a library.

  • Lost Thumbnail View of library suddenly!

I was transferring a photo that was misdated as a 2005 photo and when I went to look for it in the 2005 folder, I hit "organize" which usually brings me back to my preferred thumbnail view of all my shots in chronilogical order. Well, they are still in chron order from new to old but only full view is available. I have checked all the options on the toolbar, looked in preferences to see if there was an option to "view thumbnails". NOTHING. Any help?

Hi, Kristin. Your mistake was thinking it would be OK to move anything around inside your iPhoto Library folder. It isn't. Stay out of there at all times. Only iPhoto itself should ever arrange, rearrange, move, edit or rename anything inside that folder, as this quote from iPhoto Help indicates:
"Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder
If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise tamper with files or folders in the iPhoto Library folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in iPhoto."
This is a real annoyance, and it flies in the face of a core principle that all long-time Mac users take for granted: that they're in charge of where things are filed on their computers. But it's a fact, and you ignore it at your peril.
You may be able to regain access to your photo library by rebuilding it. To do so, hold down the Shift and Option keys while you open iPhoto, and click OK when you're asked if you want to rebuild the library.

  • Can't see all thumbnails in iPhoto library

Suddenly, when I tab over to the photos tab, I no longer see all the thumbnails in my iPhoto library. Some of them come up, most of them don't. I have tried trashing the iMovie .plist, run Diskwarrior, and rebuilt permissions. When I open iPhoto, all of the thumbnails are there and everything looks fine, only a problem when I try to access them through iMovie.
Also, when I log in as another user, everything seems to work fine!! Runnning iMovie 5.0.2 on Mac OS 10.4.3 Help!

Download and use  Find Any File  to search for a file named "Library6.iPhoto".  It's a file that is in every iPhoto library.  FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't, like invisible folders, system folders and packages.  If your library is somewhere on the hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Seeing thumbnails of your library/album

there must be something really simple i am missing and/or iphoto has the worst user interface i've seen in a while.
I want to display all the pictures in my library or an album as thumbnails on multiple rows and columns in my main window. For the life of me, I cannot get iPhoto to do that! It only displays one picture at a time on the main window. If I dbl click on the picture, then it displays one row of thumbnails at the top. This makes it a pain to scroll through a large number of pics.
Also - if I want to rearrange picture order within an album, am supposed to be able to do that by simply drag-dropping - but the one row that displays doesn't allow me to drag drop pictures.
I've been through the iPhoto help, getting started, etc. to no avail. Aaargh!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Double-clicking a photo opens it in an editing mode. That's the screen with the row of thumbnails across the top. Use the size slider in viewing mode to adjust the size of the thumbnails. Rearranging pictures will work when you are viewing an Album. It will not work when viewing the whole Library. To adjust the Library sort try View > Sort Photos > then choose a sort.
You can change what iPhoto does when you double-click a photo. There are different edit modes within iPhoto. Or you can set it to open your photos in an external editing application, such as PhotoShop. Look in iPhoto's Preferences to change this setting.
It may help you to go through the iPhoto multimedia tutorial. It can help you become familiar with the main iPhoto tools and controls.

  • Photostream imports face thumbnails from whole library

    Hello,
First time on here as I'm not sure where else to go, have been to my local Apple Store (Manchester) and they couldn't fix ithe problem and then a 2hr call with Apple support, still no joy, case was referred nearly three weeks ago but not heard anything so hear I am..............
I am using iPhoto'11 9.4.3 on a new MacBookPro OSX 10.8.3 with (Photo Library Manager 4.0.8) which I bought to clear out duplicates.
I have been using photostream successfully for ages between my iPhone, iPad and Mac but now I am unable to turn it on as when I do it imports literally hundreds and hundreds of old photos and many of these are thumbnails of all the faces in the photos not just ones that I have used in face recognition.
The Irisg guy I was talking o in support hadn't seen anything like it and set up a test iPhoto library and whilst he was talking this lobrary just grew before his eyes. My original library was approximately 3500 photos but with this it grew to 27,000 mainly composed of random thumbnail images.
Please if you have any ideas could you spell them out in simple terms!
I would really appreciate any help as I now am frightened of turning photostream on.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
Thank you for replying, just noticed my awful spelling mistakes, apologies.
Yes, we did this whilst on the support call and the issue was repeated.

  • ALL thumbnails gone, but library is intact

I have no idea what happened here but after plugging in my camera and importing a set of photos into 6.0.6, all my thumbnails for 8,000 pictures disappeared. All the actual photos are still there in my library, but every thumbnail is the gray square.
I've done the Apple Option to rebuild the thumbnail library, both the the short and long version..Odd thing is the "long" one took all of 15 seconds...and still no thumbnails.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks all.

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
IF you have made changes and cannot undo them or if you've made no changes and have a corrupted database file, you'll need to create and populate a new library. To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Blank thumbnails in photo library

I just switched to Verizon and was unable to use may backup from my ATT iphone because VZ is not running os 4.3 yet. So after syncing everything piecemeal including my 1700 photos, they keep showing up as blank thumbs. If I click a thumb it shows the pic but I can't use the thumbnail feature. I tried removing all the photos and only loading a couple and still no luck. The camera roll displays thumbs but not the imported photos from my mac. Appreciate any help.

If this was happing on your 3G and you upgraded your phone by restoring it from the backup of your 3G, it is also possible that your new phone may have inherited this problem from your old one (i.e., the problem may have been contained in the backup you restored from).  I'm not sure what else to suggest you try on your computer and I'm not sure that's the problem.  It may very well be something corrupt on your phone.  The basic troubleshooting steps (in escalating order) are Reset, Restore, Restore as New.  To reset your phone hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignoring the off slider that appears first), and release.  To restore your phone follow this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414, backing up your phone at step 6, and restoring from that backup at the end of the process, followed by syncing with iTunes.  If that fails you will have to save as much of your data as possible, and restore it as new by following this process again but at the end choosing to set it up as a new iPhone.  If the problem persists after restoring as new you probably have a hardware problem and will have to have Apple take a look at it.

  • Lost thumbnail view in library window

All my photos now display full size rather than thumnails as a result of my baby daughter hitting a key and for the life of me I can't work out how to get it back. Can anyone please help?
    Many thanks
    Adrian

I believe is is the size bar in the lower right that will resize the pictures for you.
I have an issue with iPhoto myself. When I click the icon in my menu bar iphoto starts up but the library window that contains all the pictures does not appear. Any ideas on this one? Thanks....Mike

  • I can't see image thumbnails in my library.

not able to view thumbnails to edit . i set the image size to 12 megs file size and that didn't help. the pics are jpegs. the app will open the file and then I can see the pic. but it isn't the one I want.
    thanks,
    BottomShark

Thanks for getting back on this. Not sure of the algorithm but I take it the application copies my photos before you can view them because as time past I noticed I was able to view more and more of my photos and now I can view all the photos on my phone. The application itself is wonderful. It allows me to quickly enhance my photos prior to sharing them with family and friends. I was able view photos on my phone and then open them with Photoshop touch and save changes to my phone. Now everything is working. Thanks again from another satisfied customer.

  • Thumbnails in library grid view won't load all the way

Anyone else getting this in LR 3.2? Kind of frustrating to only have half or so of the thumbnails in
grid library view load. This also happens in the scroll bar view.
    Win 7 64 bit

    Are these huge files?
Are you generating standard or 1:1 previews?
If 1:1 try switching to standard to see if that helps.

  • How can I share my iPhoto '08 Library with another user account?

I found a post that tells how to share my library so that two user accounts on my iMac have full read and write access to my iPhoto Library, but I can't find the Library. It should be under /users/myname/pictures/iphoto library/data according to a Spotlight search I used to find a photo in my library, but that folder can't be seen in Finder.

    Mike
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No, your Library should not be under
    /users/myname/pictures/iphoto library/data
That's the location of a thumbnail within the Library. Using Spotlight to search the Library is dangerous as Spotlight doesn't understand how the Library is structured.
By default - unless you moved it - the Library is in your Pictures Folder.
    /users/myname/pictures
As to Sharing with iPhoto 08:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. The problem here is that OS X works very hard to keep your data safe and secure from the other users. You're trying to beat what's built in to the system. So, to beat the system
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Lastly: This method seems a little clunky at first, but works very well. Most importantly, it uses the System to do the job for you.
Create a new Account on your Mac, call it Media. Create an iPhoto Library there. (BTW: This will work for iTunes too.)
Enable Sharing on the Library:(Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other accounts. In those accounts, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
This means that both users will be able to see the pics. If you want to use a pic then simply drag it from the shared Library to your own in the iPhoto Window. This means that each user can have their own edits.
If you want to add photos to the Library: Log into the Media account for that purpose.
To make it all seamless: Set your Mac to log into the Media Account automatically. Set iPhoto to launch on log-in. Then switch to your own account using Fast User Switching.
Net result: a Library that's permanently available to all users but also protected. Each user can have their own versions of the pics if they want.
No partitioning, no permissions issues. Uses no extra disk space. What's not to like?
Note: This process is simple in iPhoto 09, and requires none of these hoops. If this is a key feature for you you might consider upgrading.
    Regards
