• Not a question, but a solution to unwanted thumbnails appearing in new tab.

I have been forced to create a new profile because, after an update to version 17.0, Firefox persisted in opening tabs from the previous session. Unfortunately another problem developed, namely, the constant appearance of a series of thumbnails in a new tab, a facility that I definitely do not want. After consulting Mozilla help and forums I tried all of the suggested solutions to no avail.
I eventually went about:config browser.newtabpage.enabled and rendered it false. The annoying thumbnails have disappeared!!!!!

Yes, that post was spam and I've removed it.
You can create these Boolean prefs on the about:config page if you want to disable the thumbnails on the about:newtab page.
*name: browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled with value: true
*name: pageThumbs.enabled with value: false

then i try to reset firefox and it solve the problems in a time
then i restart my computer, start firefox, and all the problems came back again

Thanks

What is the Startup setting?
*Options > General > Startup: Home page
Is that "Show my windows and tabs from last time" or one of the others?
You can check if you have a user.js file in the Firefox profile folder that sets the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once pref to true.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can also check the settings for "Clear history when Firefox closes" in case this feature is enabled and if enabled then disable this as a test (i.e. remove the checkmark).
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [ ] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-browsing-search-and-download-history
Make sure that the disk cache is enabled and working because the thumbnails on the about:newtab page are generated from the disk cache. You can check the on the about:cache page (there should be disk cache section).

• Video thumbnail opens in new tab automatically

When visiting some websites with video thumbnails, including Google Mail and Startribune.com, Firefox will sporadically open a new tab with the video thumbnail.
This happens as a new Gmail message or as the website loads. It happens in safe mode as well as with extensions enabled. The problem cannot be reliably replicated even with identical URLs.
This is the link to a Youtube video that opens automatically when sent in a Gmail message: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzlhBU4nkQw&feature=player_profilepage
The tab that opens is not the actual Youtube video page, but rather a link that starts with https://nl3atn8402ncgahndqn8rb6qi2ld2g5a-a-gm-opensocial.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/ifr?url=
On the page is just the thumbnail-sized video.

Do you use  earthlink  (esp webmail)?  I figured out that it is a problem with  an ad they are running.   At least that's what it was for me.  If you log completely out of webmail and shut safari down and restart it without going to earthlink webmail, the teebik popups do not come back (even with a lot of browsing to multiple other sites).
I installed the adblocker extension and so far that is taking care of it -- was able to turn things back on to get webmail functionallity back, without the teebik ads.
Not sure that's what Earthlink WANTED me to do -- as I no longer see ANY earthlink ads -- but hey, it got rid of the teebik stuff they were forcing on me.

• How do I cnfigure to see thumbnails in a new tab???Thanks!!

I want to know how I configure firefox to see the thumbnails with the most visited sites when I open a new tab so i dont have to type everytime the site where I want to go, since I dont know how I dont see them anymore. I appreciatte your help!!! Thanks!!

Right, well I duly consider myself suitably told off for wanting my home page to behave normally, and saying so.
I didn't imagine for one moment that there would be a solution; if you can't complain here, where can you complain.

• 3 of the 9 thumbnails in the new tab window won't appear after Firefox update.

I've waited until the page stops loading and it still won't appear. It works if I change the site. The 3 sites in question are Facebook, Pinterest, and Sidereel. I haven't changed any settings on those sites. I'm stumped.

This is a known bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=756881

• I get a blank page when I open a new tab and would lie to have the thumbnails back - HOW?

Firefox ver. 16.0.2
Win 7
I have tried the suggestions I find on the web.
Your support page says:
"The Firefox New Tab page shows pictures of the sites you visit frequently. Sometimes, some or all of these images are not displayed. We'll explain why that happens and how to get them back when it's possible."
No I don't get any pictures at all when I open a new tab - It's blank, but I click on the following link:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thumbnails-on-new-tab-page-are-missing
I click on the link to follow instructions and end up here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites
I click on this link: "The images of my top sites are gone - how do I get them back?"
and end up here:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites#w_the-images-of-my-top-sites-are-gone-how-do-i-get-them-back
and end up here:
See The thumbnails on the new tab page are missing - how to get them back.
I click on the link for information and end up..... were I started.
So - Could someone be nice and explain how I get the thumbnails back?!
Because I refuse to use IE, but considering Opera..... Please advice!

You can change this in Firefox's about:config preferences editor.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter the desired value:
(i) Page thumbnails (default)
about:newtab
(ii) Blank tab
about:blank
(iii) Built-in Firefox home page
about:home
(iv) Any other page
full URL to the page
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?

• How do I change white smoke on new tab back to the thumbnails?

There is something off with my New Tab feature instead of opening with my thumbnails, it opens to this website:
www.trovi.com/?gd=&ctid=CT3326235&octid=EB_ORIGINAL_CTID&ISID=M3EB81D18-1C06-4618-A05F-EEA6AC2C6348&SearchSource=69&CUI=&SSPV=&Lay=1&UM=5&UP=SP8852B7AA-8067-4CB1-A52A-737DBD92F973
I've tried removing it but it hasn't worked, I can't find the grid button, and the Fire Fox Help Link:
The thumbnails on the new tab page are missing - how to get them back: I've tried everything from changing the search engine to removing babylon and everything and nothing has worked. White Smoke is still up and i don't know what else to do.

Hello,
It is evident an add-on is causing this.
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
Sometimes finding the add-on just doesn't do it at times, so you may want to do the following as well:
If you go to "about:config" in your browser without the quotes, click the promise to be careful button and search for browser.newtab.url and double click to edit the value and change it to about:newtab, this should fix your issue.

• New Tab Page - thumbnails are not using the files from cache folder, but they want a connection to their origin website.

Hi there,
each time I visit a website, FireFox saves a thumbnail of all these sites for the "New Tab Page". Those thumbnails are cached in the 'thumbnails' Folder . That's so far ok for me.
The problem is:
Every time if I use the "New Tab Page" (...after shutdown & reopening the browser and only with 'mousehoover' on any thumbnail) all the thumbnails on that page don't use the cached thumbnails from the local profile folder.
This means:
Instead of using the cached thumbnail-files all(!) these thumbnails dials to their origin websites without(!) a mouseclick on any of these thumbnails (...see jpg pictures) !
I'm using the "Clear history when Firefox closes" with the following options:
privacy.clearOnShutdown.cache - true
privacy.clearOnShutdown.cookies - true
privacy.clearOnShutdown.downloads - false
privacy.clearOnShutdown.formdata - true
privacy.clearOnShutdown.history - false(!)
privacy.clearOnShutdown.offlineApps - false
privacy.clearOnShutdown.passwords - true
privacy.clearOnShutdown.sessions - true
privacy.clearOnShutdown.siteSettings - false(!)
So, i can't believe that this homedialing of pinned and unpinned thumbnails should be a normal function.
1. Screenshot: thumbnails in the New Tab Page
2. Screenshot: the same thumbnails in the Cache Folder "thumbnails" (...also they are there after shutdown of Firefox)
3. Screenshot: Dialing to the origin websites (...after restart of Firefox)
The Browser Version is Firefox ESR 31.2.0 and in the installation are no Add-ons, which are - for example - prefetching linked websites.
I would like to use the "New Tab Page" without 'homedialing', so the question is:
How can I force the thumbnails to use the cached thumbnail-files ?
or
How can i disable the 'loading of content from their origin websites' already on mousehoover ?

There is a preload pref available that you could try to disable on the <b>about:config</b> page.
*browser.newtab.preload = false
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

• How to manually change the thumbnail images of the new tab page (without using addons)?

I wanted to customize the images displayed on the thumbnails on the New Tab Page. I tried using the addon "New Tab Tools" to do so and it worked, for a while. Now a bug seems to have affected it (it is not displaying any thumbnails, so I uninstalled it). So I want to try another approach. I want to MANUALLY change the images for each of the thumbnail on the new tab page (of course, the thumbnails are 'pinned').
(I read some other articles related to thumbnails, specifically about DELETING them, and it asked me to open the Firefox Profile Folder, and in there, delete the thumbnails folder. I thought I could simply change the images stored in it instead of deleting them, but there is NO thumbnails folder in the Firefox profile folder (I accessed the profile folder thru the troubleshooting information section in the help menu). So where is this thumbnails folder after all?)
So, how can I do it?
Thanks in advance.

I note you are using Icedragon 26. Not sure I have come across that before.
I guess they provide their own support, as they are apparently offering something based on an outdated and unsupported Firefox26. I see their forum has threads on Icedragon if you search for them, but at a quick glance I see no specific topic
*https://forums.comodo.com <br /> & https://forums.comodo.com/index.php?action=search2
You could always install an official and up to date Firefox 29
* See How to download and install Firefox on Windows
* Download from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
You may note the New Tabs page may be subject to a few changes over coming versions of Firefox it is apparently being improved. Firefox itself as Fx29 is also slightly changed from Fx26

• Can I select 9 websites/thumbnails to place PERMANENTLY on my new tab pages?

I'm always having to replace the sites I want displayed in the thumbnails on the new tabs. Can't I just select the 9 thumbnails/web sites that I want there permanently? My family often uses my computer and I'm not interested in their most viewed websites! (:

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL.<br />
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin them and have your own favorites sites showing.
Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in the browser.newtabpage.pinned (default = [null]) and browser.newtabpage.blocked prefs that you can check/modify on the about:config page.

• Can't get Firefox to open a new tab as my homepage or a specific url. Alwatys get 'The address isn't valid'

When opening a new tab, I keep getting 'The Address isn't valid'. Went through all the fixes given in previous threads, changing the url in about:config, running Firefox in safe mode (problem still exists with plugins disabled) resetting Firefox, changed newtab settings to about:home etc, restarted, deleted cookies. Nothing seems to work. Some other program seems to be overriding the Firefox settings. May be a virus. I am using the latest McAfee software.
I once had an add-on that brought up thumbnails with a new tab but I removed that a while back.
On the right hand side search bar of firefox I can see that Bing is one of the dropdown search engine choices not that it should make a difference but I thougth they were sometimes a bit aggresive.
Anyhow, would love to know if there is a solution as it's making me suspicious of having an undetected visus or hijacking.

Thanks for your relpy but I've already tried these solutions and no joy. I tried them again there just to be sure but still no good.
In the mean time I installed a plug-in that does this for me. I used My Homepage 1.2 and it's done the business.
Still don't know what was causing the problem. (And it wasn't a typo, I checked and copied and pasted urls from other locations...)

• New Tab Page FAILS!

The Thumbnails on the "New Tab" page are not being rendered. I've visited each site frequently, so I know that they are in the "history" / "cache." Yet this still do not appear in the "New Tab" page.
Firefox has certainly failed on this!!!

Do you at least see empty slots with the URL below them?
Does it help if you drag a site that you've visited in one of the slots?
The thumbnails on the about:newtab page are generated from the cache, so if the page is not in the cache or otherwise can't be rendered as a PNG image then you will get an empty box.<br />
Do not use Clear Recent History to clear data when you close Firefox.<br />
If there is no history then you get an about:newtab page with empty boxes.<br />
